Hey, great work on all those videos, thanks for all the effort. I noticed a little mistake in this one, in the skills section you forgot intimidation for the charisma skills.
As a brand new player, my biggest criticism of BG3 is that it is not new player friendly at all. The tips that show up aren't very telling and they don't always last long enough for me to even realize they're there and will disappear before I have a chance to actually read it because I'm so distracted looking at something in the world. I was hoping the game was going to have a great tutorial section that did a better job at holding my hand through the first part of the game. They really just throw you into the game and say "Figure it out" which is normally okay, but I've never played DnD so I don't understand any of the lingo with dice rolls and other stuff that's common amongst that community. I'm still enjoying the game, I just spend a lot of time trying to figure stuff out thats super basic and im still like "uhhh, I guess ill figure it out later"
Very much agree there. The tutorial section doesn't do anything more than allow you to re-check the few pop-ups that were presented as you progress. I was really looking forward to just sitting there for like an hour or two soaking all the information it would have.. A lot of other RPGs have highly detailed tutorial sections, even for much more intuitive and much less complex games than this one. The lack of one here is the only letdown so far playing the game 😕

As a complete beginner to D&D and new to baldurs gate, this video was super complicated and I found myself getting lost numerous times. It would be nice to explain exactly where you see things too, when you were talking about AC I had no idea what was going on as the screen shows many letters and numbers with different sections. I wouldn't call this a beginners guide, I'd say it's more like a refresh for players who have already played D&D
The thing is, we are so used to piss easy games that playing a game on "easy" just seems insulting. Most games " easy" setting just means story mode where you have to occasionally press a random button and watch the pretty pictures. In BG3 however, easy is probably the best experience for a new player who has no D&D or CRPG experience, because it really allows you to experiment with all the different classes and spells and so on, without too much punishment. So, just play the game on easy, and dont feel bad about it or something. Its your game, you payed for it, so its completely up to you how to play it as you choose and never let some elitist jerk with no life tell you otherwise.
This guide isn't really that good for beginners as it's more going over abilities rather than explain the core. @@vivian2556 I get what you are saying, I know the feeling. However, like I said, you are in charge so you get to decide what is "properly". This is not some online competitive game where builds and min-maxing actually matters. The only thing that matters here is you having fun. So properly in this case simply means playing it in the most enjoyable way. I had the same issue with The Witcher 3. I thought the lore, stories, characters and of course the world were all amazing. However, I just didn't enjoy the combat that much. Especially all the crafting, oils and potions. My inventory was a mess with 100s of items I didn't even understand and yes, to a point it just became stressfull dealing with all that. So I said to myself... I just want to immerse myself in this world and all this crap is preventing me from doing that, so I just turned the difficulty down to normal and had a great experience after that. 41yo gamer here too. I can't agree more with your statement. I have no experience in this type of game and it's really challenging to understand all of it. Although theses videos are very informative and well made, I think he is just going too fast and with his background of years and years of experience, it's understandable that even a video for beginners is to challenging for the total noob.
im 26 but i had the same problem when trying to play divinity original sin 2 which is larian studios last game and a lot of what they learned there they put into baludrs gate 3. what helped me understand was playing pathfinder wrath of the righteous as that game is more forgiving than larian games, which are infamous for being truly hardcore classic rpgs making baldurs gate 3 a rough game to start the genre in. wrath of the righteous also has a ton of difficulty options making it a much better starting point in the genre. thats what helped me understand hope it helps.
I'm just glad i don't have to do the math, and get to enjoy playing the game. Love the guides as usual. Thank you all for the hard work and time you've put in for us!
I've played hundreds of hours of RPGs, but have never played D&D, I bought Baldur's Gate 3 because of the reviews and the desire to get lost game, I quickly realised I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so here I am! Thank you.
Would love a beginners guide for players who know 5e but dont understand crpg. Heard many people say positioning before fights is huge but not really heard anyone explain it. Along with other helpful things even outside of combat that are helpful that are different from 5e
I think they have made mobs too powerful in general, like say a gnoll for example, they have area effect projectiles, can fire three times a round, have grenades and a whole host of melee abilities and debuffs and even in act 1 you can be outnumbered 10-12 to 4 in some fights. You hit G and toggle off group mode so you can position some of your people individually in a good position before you trigger the encounter so you don't get all eviscerated in the first round. I am enjoying the challenge of some of the fights but I have a lot of experience with 5e and computer rpgs and strategy games and Larian's AI from the DOS series. I don't think mobs in general should have the extent of the range attacks that they do, the vast majority should be melee based, I have had to respec my characters to adjust to just how much ranged firepower the mobs have, it makes melee characters very weak.
If you care about optimization then you need to get used to save scumming, or constantly saving and reloading. Certain innocent dialogue can easily turn into a massive fight and strategies you try the first time around won’t always work. Make sure you take advantage of scouting, IE, using your WASD + EQ to move the camera around as you can scout ahead alot of the times. At first, it’s hard to know when something dangerous is coming up, but after you play the game for a while, you start to pick up on it…almost like a gut instinct, this helps you put your party in a better position.
As far as rest mechanics go, I always short rest after a combat every time and then long rest when I have used all my shorts. I try to mostly plan to have 3 combats per long rest and generally divide spells and resources accordingly and it feels totally fine!
That does seem like excessive resting. If you are playing and planning accordingly you should be able to do 5-6 battles per long rest. Unless it’s a boss. With the amount of skills and spells you shouldn’t need to refresh after every battle. I like it that way because it forces me to use other spells I have learned and not rely on 1-2 main spells and keep resting. Plus if you are smart you can use the arena against the enemy and get some very easy kills with almost no effort. Just takes planning and moving characters around.
The full game is way way way much better than the early access. I played 40 hours of EA and when I played the full game its like I didn't play it. Its like a totally different game. What a best time to be alive on this world!
I understood already that I was going to be new to this kind of game especially with the dungeon and dragons mechanics but the information light out here is honestly overwhelming. I’m constantly going back and trying to slowly digest each section but I think it’s going to take more hands-on experience, before I actually understand the meaning behind some of these explanations. Regardless of that, thank you for this video Fex. I’m absolutely new to all of this, I love RPG‘s and spend most of my time in those kinds of games but the understanding of mechanics and systems at play here in this style is definitely humbling and putting me at newcomer level. Not against that, I am a proud newcomer, and I am excited for both the journey and learning that comes with all of this is well . I’ll definitely be making use of your videos in the journey to come 😉
@@Fextralife 10-4 . Honestly, I appreciate your comment here Fex and genuine, practicality/encouragement. @@connor040606 I have the same problem. Used to RPGs but not this this style. The sheer amount of numbers you have to keep track of is making me doubt if I want to embark on this journey.
I’m a pure beginner to BG3/D&D and was watching a few videos starting to feel confident, but not after going through this video. 😅 On my 5th rewind of the first section I thought I may need to start taking a few notes😵💫 Super informative though and I’m going to be rewatching to get a hang of the mechanics. Thanks for this!
Ditto. I think that I will need to just buckle down and play the game, even if the first go doesn’t go well, just to get the hang of it. Some games I think you simply can’t get the hang of even the basics from a guide. Best of luck to you!
How are you enjoying the game? Same here no experience with this type of game and would love to try it. Just seems so complicated, but would love the challenge.
For me it started with Elden Ring, then Bloodborne after that it was Dark Souls 3 then Diablo IV and now Baldurs Gate 3. I dont know how you manage to create all these tutorials and wikis but your channel/service is Golden, Thanks Fextralife! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I jumped right into the game and figured a lot of stuff up for myself. I then now watched the video and it was really nice filling in the gaps of things I didn’t quite understand. Thanks for this.
Im really new to this style of game. Have always wanted to play dnd, always thought it seemed really fun but I dont know anyone who plays. It can be overwhelming just jumping in. This vid helped me understand a lot of things.
Just give it a shot. Go in and learn, worst case is you can play another class again in a second playthrough and make it easier on yourself. You also can’t get caught up in trying to unlock or do everything in one game. These aren’t designed that way. There will be things you just can’t do and will miss based on your class and skills. Don’t worry and just move on. Make a note and get it next time.
I'm an outsider looking in. Total D&D novice, and from what I gather from this very well done beginner guide is all of the concepts and mechanics from BG3 are relatively straightforward and simple enough ... But the problem for ppl like myself is that the vast number of simple things thrown at us are simply overwhelming. And this is what makes the game seem more challenging that it probably should. So if the game has a great tutorial system than there's hope for me and othe rlike minded gamers that are interested in this game. If not, then I wish all of us the best of luck and hope you enjoy the 2 hour demo
This was very helpful to me at 20 hours into act 1. Wouldve been greek to me before, but very valuable now. Time to go respec literally every character.
As a youngin coming from playing DND with older brothers streaming this & learning the game more has been much easier games always help explain things like this,, great work man!
I only came here to understand why I wasn’t rolling attack or damage rolls, and that was explained in 30 seconds; but I stayed for the whole thing! Good stuff. I’m only about an hour in the game right now and realized I need to start over with a new character because I set mine up WAY bad 😅
Same here, story is sooooooo hard. I got jumped soo bad in the prologue that I decided 4 hrs in to just listen to that scum and go straight to the machine without fighting 😅
not gonna lie i’ve spent the last 2 days (and over 20 hours) just winging it and I love this game, figured that now’s a good time to look at a beginners guide 😂
Yep, it is a lot to grasp. My advice - read all of the 'box out' text Larian provide to help make decisions. A lot of how you play initially can be done via intuition. Don't study too hard on mechanics or you'll become paralysed. Play and learn as you go. Refer to YT as necessary. GL.
@@ddenozor I'm downloading right now, I've seen some of the spells they don't look as flashy as dos2's however sound design seems to be a massive improvement
I think if you know how Divinity 2 works this won’t be too bad. It’s largely the same with the exception of bonus actions and how spells work. You can’t just cast a spell infinitely. You have to rest to refresh your spells, they are basically one time use. For me it makes it more interesting because I have to make use of everything I have to make it through. But my opinion is once you get the finer points down you will be fine. It’s very similar to divinity in a lot of ways.
This is a good guide, thank you. I know this because the first time I listened to it, it sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher. Wah wah wah waaaaaah. The more I listen to it, the more I understand the words coming out of your mouth.
Thank you very much for the job. One thing about rest : when you play to the maximum difficulty you need 80 food supply. I think in normal difficulty you need 40 ? In hard difficulty you still have to be a bit cautious and save your food supply I guess. Personnally I love the idea that I have to manage my resources.
Thank you for actually explaining the basics of the game in your video and not just going on and on that you really do love this game and i should buy it like other "beginner videos" have.
Thank you. As someone who hasn't played DnD this has been very helpful. Especially since my first character is a wizard. I should be resting more often. I have 400+ camp supplies and was still being anxious about resting.
After attempting to play this without knowing anything - I almost uninstialled - then I realized I'm an idiot so I'm came here to fix that b/c this game is incredible
Tbh it was a little overwhelming at first since I’m so used to games having tutorials and really holding your hand. However, once I started to notice there wasn’t really much information I decided to start reading and researching things in game. This has made it a more of a fun experience because figuring out things is what I love to do! And it’s made it much more enjoyable for me.
I played like 3 hours now and have no idea whats going on with all the abilities. Feels like i need to study to understand the game mechanics, lol. Working my way through it.
Its easy once u understand the core mechanics. The problem is just two: 1. The scope of possiblity that u can do is so vast.. too much choices. And too much choices, ironically, could paralyze u. 2. The control is sucks.. I mean, moving character with clicks? Really? Then I try using controller.. it works better for me..
Damn you have a good voice for this type of work. Relaxing asf haha. Good content too! Helps me as a beginner of the Baldus series. Since i´ve played DOS 2 i support this game studio. Other studios should be held to the same standards!
This isn't a video you just watch once. You watch it, play, come back later and watch again when you start to put things together. Most of this stuff isnt what you need to know. What I came here to know is how to use "dash" and all those other moves in combat.
Ill be honest, the game mechanic is way more overwhelming than Div2 (absolutely loved that game). But ive only just gotten off that mindflayer ship so still in the early stages of the game, hopefully ill be able to pick things up quickly
How is it so much more overwhelming? It’s largely the same, they just call things different names and you have more skills. There is also the bonus action mechanic, but it’s pretty easy to see what the bonus actions are. For me after playing divinity 2 I find this easy to get into. It’s also more fun solo for me than divinity was. I had a real hard time playing solo on divinity, I just couldn’t get very far. Part of that is also I restarted like 7 times because the person I was playing with had severe character ADD and wanted to keep trying different mods and class combinations. It was a nightmare. Never beat it but a great game. Give this one a chance, it’s really fun.
Thought this game was gonna be a totally different thing now I’m so mad at myself for getting it instead of other options I had but ima just play it and get the feel for it
Great guide as always. Reading through the comments made me feel better about not understanding jack shit in the game. I’m just gonna wing it and see how it goes.

"Here son, Baldurs Gate 3, the Game of the Year! And here is a 20 min beginners guide about math and statistics to help you with all the basics! Have fun!" But seriously, thanks! Actually learned a thing or 2 here. But I have to say, if I was my 16 year old son watching this... yeah... Id just go back to my Formula 1 racing game haha.
Great Video. Thank you. Im brand new to D&D and BG and have to say although i am absolutely loving it, i am also finding it quite overwhelming at times, so i will be definitely referring back to this video
This is the second time I've tried watching this guide and I remember why I stopped the video two minutes in last time. As soon as you started talking about abilities and the maths behind them I just lost all interest and noped the hell out. You make it sound far too complicated. Maybe slow that section down a bit.
My main takeaway from watching this video… you are very smart, and I am very dumb. Thanks for putting this video together. D&D is something I’ve never played, but I’ve always found it interesting. BG3 seems like a great way to play D&D. You can play solo, don’t have to remember all the steps or do math.
What I learned by just winging it is positioning in combat is key. There are combats where I was absolutely smacked but when I strategized my positioning I was able to beat them. And beat the enemies by chunks not everything all at once.
Good thing I have a complete understanding of d20, what saving throw even means, there are so many things going on in this game I was lost after level 3. I have no idea what spells are good to pick, what in the world is going on in combat..which tbh takes painstakingly long..just feels like I got thrown into advanved chemistry when I know nothing about it.
I took the plunge with this game and I'm learning as I'm going along. I'm familiar with the slangs used since I enjoy reading the D&D gaming books which I own a few. But I felt this game just threw me into the lion's den. Heck, it took me a while to figure out how to exit my own campsite. 😩

I died 6 times in the prologue and after 4 hours of playing I cleared the prologue and saved the game and quit to get some sleep, I will try again tomorrow but one thing I learnt is watching tips and guides is useless without playing I put 20+ hr into TH-cam content to prepare myself for the game once the game started I didn’t know what was an action vs what was a bonus action, and until now I don’t know if I consumed my action so I always try an action and if fails I try bonus action and often I just end my turn because I don’t know what to do

I just want to immerse myself in this world and all this crap is preventing me from doing that, so I just turned the difficulty down to normal and had a great experience after that. Its just a matter of knowing yourself and understanding what you really want out of something. And that's not only true for games of course.
@@ageoflove1980 well.. that is certainly nicely said. Might have to give the game another shot and try to put those reservations aside. Thank you (:

I LOLed!
Being 41 and a gamer for most of it i like to think i am pretty good at figuring games out but this game is just on a whole nother lvl.. i have watched this video 5 times in a row and it is extremely well done (all your videos are) and im still having trouble wrapping my head around it lol. Thanks for everything you do for gamers my dude..your wikis online are a amazing and you are a unit of a resource
22 and struggling hard but loving it!
I’m 34 and in the same boat, but Iv just put the game on story mode and click shit and hope they die 😂 it’s working
Use Anki to memorize key points. Worth it if you already use it for other things.
I'm just glad i don't have to do the math, and get to enjoy playing the game. Love the guides as usual. Thank you all for the hard work and time you've put in for us!
This is almost too complex, especially for beginners. Dumb it down more please. Feel like I need a PhD in D&D just to understand how it works.
Agreed.
It's dense, had to pause every 5 seconds, but after a few rewatches, I think I get it
Yeah this video is too complicated to be a beginners guide.
I honestly thought it was too light on information but thats just me 😂
@@arifridman314 Well maybe you should start with the ultimate endgame guide. And if that's to easy you could find a more challenging game.
I've played hundreds of hours of RPGs, but have never played D&D, I bought Baldur's Gate 3 because of the reviews and the desire to get lost game, I quickly realised I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so here I am! Thank you.
Think my brain melted watching this from the amount of information
First complete content packed game I've seen released since Elden Ring. Never played a game like this before but I'm hooked
Same here. Elden ring was amazing and that was a first for me. I loved the player building. Got this game and felt the same vibe.
Larian studios supporting your content bro? You deserve that man. Without you honestly their community wouldn't have been the same. 🙏
Would love a beginners guide for players who know 5e but dont understand crpg. Heard many people say positioning before fights is huge but not really heard anyone explain it. Along with other helpful things even outside of combat that are helpful that are different from 5e
this
On it!
@@Fextralife You get Inspiration!
No penalty from long resting and passing to much time?
@@BigAussieCheesesthis is also what I’ve been wondering.
@@BigAussieCheesesyou need food to take a long rest, this Is the only thing that might be and issue. Otherwise passing of time Just does not matter
Good tip. Thanks!
I’ll definitely be making use of your videos in the journey to come 😉
There’s so much to dnd that everyone gets overwhelmed, and even vets argue and nitpick over what’s what. Give it time and it’ll make sense!
@@Fextralife 10-4 . Honestly, I appreciate your comment here Fex and genuine, practicality/encouragement. I know the understanding will come with time and experience with the journey, and at the same time will have good videos and input from you and your channel here to further clarify/help as well.
It’s overwhelming, but in a exciting way . Looking forward to the journey to come.
Thanks bro
I am in the same boat. I love RPGs but am new to this. I want to play this game, but I don't think I have the time to actually invest into learning all of this! haha.
@@connor040606 I have the same problem. Used to RPGs but not this this style. The sheer amount of numbers you have to keep track of is making me doubt if I want to embark on this journey.
❤💯
I’m a pure beginner to BG3/D&D and was watching a few videos starting to feel confident, but not after going through this video. 😅
On my 5th rewind of the first section I thought I may need to start taking a few notes😵💫
Super informative though and I’m going to be rewatching to get a hang of the mechanics.
Thanks for this!
haha same on my second rewind and realizing I messed up lol
Just gotta jump in lol I didn’t know anything either till I bought and played, and you just catch on over time
Ditto. I think that I will need to just buckle down and play the game, even if the first go doesn’t go well, just to get the hang of it. Some games I think you simply can’t get the hang of even the basics from a guide. Best of luck to you!
same my head hurts
How are you enjoying the game? Same here no experience with this type of game and would love to try it. Just seems so complicated, but would love the challenge.
For me it started with Elden Ring, then Bloodborne after that it was Dark Souls 3 then Diablo IV and now Baldurs Gate 3. I dont know how you manage to create all these tutorials and wikis but your channel/service is Golden, Thanks Fextralife! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Same here. I feel nostalgic listening to this.
Worst case scenario play as a different class in another Playthru? Isn’t each play through like 70 hours?
I love this studio. The fact that they are even sponsoring this video for you made me just say wow!
this game is freaking cool. Best RPG ever made. It's crazy how it just pulls you in and hours just melt away.
As a youngin coming from playing DND with older brothers streaming this & learning the game more has been much easier games always help explain things like this,, great work man!
Them old school D&D players must've been some hard core, dedicated players.
I only came here to understand why I wasn’t rolling attack or damage rolls, and that was explained in 30 seconds; but I stayed for the whole thing! Good stuff. I’m only about an hour in the game right now and realized I need to start over with a new character because I set mine up WAY bad 😅
Ty for this video. I have it on story and keep dying 😂😂😂😂
It's all good man, we all have to start somewhere!
Stick with it mate, in a month when you're soloing bosses you'll look back on this comment and smile!
You can do it 😂❤ all part of the journey!
Same here, story is sooooooo hard. I got jumped soo bad in the prologue that I decided 4 hrs in to just listen to that scum and go straight to the machine without fighting 😅
Is it that hard or just folks aren't used to the 5E rules?
not gonna lie i’ve spent the last 2 days (and over 20 hours) just winging it and I love this game, figured that now’s a good time to look at a beginners guide 😂
I loved dos2 played multiple times, hope I understand all of these mechanics seems a lot to grasp
GL.
Same dos2 was tough to understand so hopefully this will be ok!
It's hard to get used to spell slots and action economy after dos2 but as I understood more, I started having more fun.
This made me lol
Okay I just watched all of that and I have no fucking clue what to do still… literally an hour in and feel like I’ve been chucked in the deep end
Read guides from IGN! It works for me
Thank you very much for the job.
Thank you. This video is very useful for those of us who are a bit unfamiliar with the D&D system.
Is there may be a beginner's guide for the beginner's guide... ?
The problem is just two:
1. The scope of possiblity that u can do is so vast.. too much choices. And too much choices, ironically, could paralyze u.
2. The control is sucks.. I mean, moving character with clicks? Really?
Then I try using controller.. it works better for me..
I'm downloading bg3 on my series X as we speak!! Im so excited to play it for the first time!!
Damn you have a good voice for this type of work. Relaxing asf haha. Good content too! Helps me as a beginner of the Baldus series. Since i´ve played DOS 2 i support this game studio. Other studios should be held to the same standards!
Your DOS2 guides have prepared me for this. Trying to wrap up a playthrough of DOS2 with my group and then we'll dive into BG3!
This isn't a video you just watch once. You watch it, play, come back later and watch again when you start to put things together. Most of this stuff isnt what you need to know. What I came here to know is how to use "dash" and all those other moves in combat.
Hey dude, just want to say that you always produce great content and it is appreciated
@georgen5882 well its a very subjective opinion isn't it? I haven't touched 5D dnd before playing this
Console player…been seeing a lot of positive reviews for the game. It’s sparked my interest in getting it now for its console release
Love this man's videos such great guides videos always top teir and totally a great gamer. I'm glad to see good people still on this platform.

I JUST opened youtube about to search for a video exactly like this 😭😭 thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼 i was playing yesterday and it was fun but i was sooo lost
I'm tempted to buy the game but even this great guide has me lost as well 🙂
"Here son, Baldurs Gate 3, the Game of the Year!
I would be lost without Fextralife. Thank you
I cannot stress enough, have Guidance AT ALL TIMES. It’s literally a free 1d4 to Ability whenever you need it. It’s a cantrip.
there are lots of assumptions about the player base. I've never played a BG game and never played D&D either... Needed this video!
It's a good way to learn for sure, and you can experiment a bunch and stuff
5 minutes in and I’m thinking Forza sounds great. Fast car go vroom.
Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Elden Ring, no matter what RPG you've played, Dungeons and Dragons IS the grandfather of them all/
Dark Souls even!

What I learned by just winging it is positioning in combat is key. There are combats where I was absolutely smacked but when I strategized my positioning I was able to beat them. And beat the enemies by chunks not everything all at once.
I’ll be coming back to this video in a month lol

That is a fantastic video and very helpful. Thank you very much for the information.
