    Great that Aladino decided to replace that part at the back when he did. Probably saved lots of heartache later when the boat was in a less convenient place for working. Such a good eye.

    Aladino reminds me of my father, who spent months restoring a Riva-style wooden motorboat 45 years ago. Varnishing was an epic task and dust his nemesis. Although my father sprayed the vanish, it required 7 or 8 coats, with polishing, degreasing and dedusting after each application. The last coat was buffed and the mirror finish gave a beautiful depth and colours to the wood. 45 years later, having experienced fresh and sea water, sun and rain, hot and cold, the vanish needed only a light buffing to regain its beauty. So, Aladino, your work is not in vain and the result will speak for itself for years to come -- but, you already know that, don't you? 😉 Well done on a great job!

      "Bear proof" does include rat-proof as well - which is essential all over the globe. The letter-box-like small opening does prevent inserting larger-than-daily litter, too, so it is bulky-waste-proof and garbage-hooligan-proof in the same go.

    From an old coatings chemist, we always recommended that gloss varnish is never stirred and preferably kept in a still place any bits in the varnish settle and stay on the bottom and they are there no matter how good the manufacturer filters. The other thing is we would recommend build coats of semi-gloss varnish you get a more even and better film smoothness then the last coat is wet sanded and prepped very carefully after which a gloss varnish is applied in only one or two coats.

    If you want a perfect, dust free finish, I have found that you need to wet sand the cured varnish with about 2,000-3,000 grit and then buff it back to a super gloss finish. I use Epifanes gloss varnish exclusively. It is a bit harder to use than other varnishes, but the results and the longevity of the finish are worth it. Mahogany is the worst wood though since starting from bare mahogany normally requires 8-10 coats to completely fill the grain and get that mirror finish. You can reduce the number of coats needed by using a filler stain like Pettit dark mahogany. I do that to reduce the number of coats, to get a uniform color and to reduce that sickening yellowing that happens to mahogany from sun exposure.

    • @jfv65
      @jfv65 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was thinking along the same lines. The 2000-sanding + buffing reminds me of a car painter chasing that show gloss finish

    Well done 👍 I understand Aladino’s dilemma having been called
    Anal retentive many times. My mentor once said to me “if it’s not perfect, then it’s flawed “. Achieving a balance between perfection and good enough can be difficult and time consuming. Having another set of eyes you trust, to lend encouragement and judgment can help to keep you from spiraling into the abyss. You both are a great team. Thank you for sharing your life with me with your well executed production. I hope to meet you someday as I continue on my journey to the sea.

    Aladino's love of his craft is evident in everything he does. That cutlass bearing play is only to be expected after all the hours that were put on it coming up the canals. It is not so much that I would worry about it for awhile but Aldino is Aladino. That shaft wear though is something I would address as it will only make a new cutlass bearing wear faster. So once again Aladino's intuition was correct even if it took another to point out the issue to him.

    you can use 2500 wet sand paper between the layers of paint to remove dust, we usually do this on cars if we are going to do a show car, depending on how many layers you are going to do when you are done with layers I would polish with 9000 grit polishing agent

    A rubber cutlass bearing should be rotated in such a way that a wide part of rubber is at bottom. This bearing seems installed with a groove almost at the bottom, which results in faster wear.

    • @normanboyes4983
      @normanboyes4983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so sure about that all. Once a shaft is rotating in a journal (or cutlass bearing) the hydrodynamic effect of the rotation and the lubrication fluid lifts the shaft clear if the borrow of the bearing and the bearing climbs up the wall of the bearing on a wedge of lubrication fluid, in the direction of rotation of the shaft until an equilibrium of forces is achieved.

    You are awesome! I knoow the struggle of dust in the varnish, i once was chasing the perfection of dust free varnish on wood when i was a teen. it never came. As someone else suggested I think that lots of layers, then sand it down, then polish is one good way to go. Also another tip. spray distilled water inside the "dustfree" invironment with a spraygun into the air can make the dust settle. then after that, go over the area to remove the last dust, before varnish.

    A dust control option is industrial width ‘kitchen’ cling/ sticky wrap. I have seen it used to good effect in Tiland. Set up in sheets or as walls in and around paint areas. Another option I know of is a positive pressure ahead, or my local years uses a big vacuumed blower to keep forging air out on the plastic tents they build, Kline yours.
