As a dedicated intern of The Cellar, the mandate of maintaining and reporting accurate Pokescience never ceases. Lab results are currently on my channel since TH-cam hates links in comments. Tests were conducted with average IVs, neutral natures, moves that are available to the Pokemon at this point, and around the level the starter ought to be from using it as the premiere Pokemon in a party throughout an entire playthrough. Blaziken can really only 1v1 a single one of Wallaces mons on a good day, Swampert can comfortably take out 3 with resource investment, and Sceptile can consistently take out 5. Sceptile actually managing to defeat Gyarados in this test should be ignored, as it was dependent on a crit. Sceptile will basically always fall to it after the previous 5. What affect does this have on the final starter ratings? ...Zero. None at all. Sceptile is still of course, the worst Hoenn starter. Cheese this is too far. Local TH-camr puts GORE and UNBRIDLED VIOLENCE in video trailer. Also, those Poochyenas are biting you off of 30 Sp Atk! You should be fine! You hit your Res growth, right? 💪🧠
My theory about why people don't shit too much on the Hoenn dex unlike the Johto dex is that the physical / special split benefited a lot of these mons, turning them from mediocre to good or outright stellar. The fact Sceptile became worse with this change will always be funny and sad tho lmao.
I never get why people say Sceptile got worse with the physical/special split. Like Gen 4 massively improved Grass attacks like creating Energy Ball & Leaf Storm as well as buffing Leaf Blade & Giga Drain. Sceptile's special movepool also received nice buffs with Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, and fully special Hidden Power, while its physical side only really has Earthquake and Rock Slide as the standouts but is still filled with rather weak/inconsequential coverage like ThunderPunch, Crunch, X-Scissor, Brick Break, Dragon Claw, etc. This thing doesn't get Wood Hammer either. Even if Sceptile's Atk and SpA were swapped, I still wouldn't look upon its prospects fondly; it would still need to Swords Dance to hurt things and now you've neutered its immediate attacking potential on the special side.
while energy ball and leaf storm are great moves, they're not really available to sceptile in an ingame playthrough. In oras, sceptile learns leaf storm at level 67, well after the end of the game. The energy ball tm is obtainable in the safari zone, but only once you get both bikes. My research indicates this is only possible after beating the champion, but I could be wrong on this. Either way, these moves are not really available to the treecko line. On the other hand, leaf blade got massively nerfed by coming off of the weaker attack stat. Without energy ball or leaf storm, this really is your best attacking move for the vast majority of the game, and that is not a good look. It's usable, but blatantly nerfed. In terms of coverage, it's not so bad, but I find it really funny how you mentioned focus blast and dragon pulse when: 1. sceptile already had dragon and fighting coverage, and 2. these are literally the only coverage moves it learns. Yeah, sceptile's special attacking movepool is extremely barren. It's so bad that mega sceptile with it's massive 145 base special attack regularly resorted to sub-seed strategies in the tiers it was relevant in. Sure, focus blast and dragon pulse are stronger than brick break and dragon claw, but focus blast suffers from poor accuracy, and dragon coverage is extremely niche anyway. Most of its original coverage moves like earthquake and rock slide were already physical, but it would still love to have special crunch or thunder punch as options, even if they're not amazing. basically, while the physical special split is a nerf for sceptile, it's not anything major. Leaf blade using the worse stat is annoying, but not the end of the world. The problem with sceptile is that it is simply specialized in the wrong stat for no reason. It has a massive wealth of physical coverage moves, swords dance, and a signature* physical move, but high special attack for some reason. Mega sceptile should have been a physical attacker, change my mind.
@@jerry3115 Allow me to go through each of your points: - the 'optimal' way to use ORAS Sceptile is to level Treecko up to level 21 to get Giga Drain, evolve it, then level up to 23 for Leaf Blade. And just like that, you now have Grovyle's best moves before the midway point of the game, while the other two starters would have already fully evolved by the time they get their best moves. And for the record, 90 BP Leaf Blade off Grovyle's/Sceptile's Attack stat still hits harder on average than 70 BP Leaf Blade off of their Special Attack, so this is still overall an upgrade, never mind the fact that you already have 75 BP Giga Drain by then. - Sceptile's special coverage is much smaller than Sceptile's physical movepool, but for the most part Sceptile's physical movepool doesn't really help _that_ much in the grand scheme. This is especially apparent when all of those physical moves are trying to supplement a 90 BP Leaf Blade which is pretty damn woeful for offensive Grass standards (if your name is not Kartana that is). Despite the small special movepool, Mega Sceptile's 145 SpA is more than plenty to make it tricky to wall, and the one format where it dedicated two moveslots to Leech Seed + Protect (not SubSeed btw) was because of Golisopod's presence and the fact that the Steels in the tier were already worn down by SeedTect, meaning MSceptile didn't even need the extra coverage that you think it wishes for; it's already fine in this regard. - I will agree with you on Sceptile's choice of specialization; Sceptile's movepool has a physical inclination despite what its stats portray, which makes it especially unfortunate that Sceptile has not had a single way to boost its Special Attack at any point (not even Growth). Considering even Torterra got Shell Smash, Sceptile could have appreciated like Nasty Plot or anything of the sort. As for physical Mega Sceptile, honestly I'm inclined to agree since Mega Sceptile unfortunately cannot learn Draco Meteor due to out-of-battle Mega mechanics, so making better use of the physical Dragon moves it has would help it out.

But then Wallace washes you.
@veghesther3204 Yeah. Bulbasaur sweeps Roxanne, tanks Brawly and can Seed+Sleep cheese Watson, maybe Flannery because they're all slow, and can reasonably be fully evolved by Norman. You get Sludge Bomb after that, so you can at least do something against Winnona, Tate and Liza are a lot worse, but doable, and Juan is easy, assuming you have Growth. Elite 4 is worse since you don't have Dragon Claw for Drake, but if you go for Sunny Day+Solar Beam, Wallace is doable if you can sleep Wailord.
Still think this was the best balanced starter trio for playthroughs up until gen 8. Even if Treecko lacks behind it's not as horridly bad as Serperior or as slow as Torterra.
Terra might be slow but its a literal turtle so the flavour is fitting. Its also really good; STAB EQ at 32 (right at the fighting game with the Lucario in Platinum) is reaaallly good. Gymwise Rock, Water, Steel and Electric and a Ground E4 helps it out and it gets a good amount of coverage. Id argue its better than Empoleon personally; especially with how mid Prinplup is and Piplup not learning water gun.
Swampert is hands-down the best starter pokemon ever. Bulky, strong, balanced, only one very foreseeable weakness, able to use both physical and special attacks effectively -- what more do you need? PS: Masterful edits. Holy damn.
Your video about the Johto starters was the very first video of yours I saw, and it was why I subscribed to you. I'm happy to see one for the Hoenn starters!
Im so excited for Sceptile to be the best starter ! Afterall its the starter that the pokemon company chose to give to Ash in thr gen 3 anime and even a mega one to Sawyer in the X&Y anime, surely gamefreak would have given this thing a good movepool, theres also no way they wouldnt let it be the only one without a secondary typing
Insert Swampert as "Jeff Bush" meme with the title being : Mudkip wins Hoenn's Best Starter Caucus! With Hoenn on the background being covered with too much 💧!
Ok but sceptile’s actually perfectly fine as a subseeder in the frontier if you can breed one with leech seed. It’s especially nice in the battle pike to have a subseeder when they yeet wobbafets at you constantly in the wild Mon rooms.
Finally. After around 2 years of loyal service to the YTC Institute, the Mudkip glazing video is here Insane work on this vid Cheese!! (gen 4 starters when )
@@ImportedCheese I don't think it is unreasonable to have Feraligatr on a similar level or even above Swampert purely based on in game performance. At least the GSC incarnation of Feraligatr, it is much worse in HGSS. GSC Feraligatr has no bad matchup in the entire game. The hardest gym is probably Bugsy if you don't assume to have evolved your Totodile, or Claire if your attack is bad enough that Return boosted by Pink Bow doesn't 1HKO the Dragonairs. Sure, you can say that it is a physical water type with no good STAB move, but in reality, Return, available before the third gym, is stong enough to knock out most neutral targets, with Surf and Ice Punch being sufficient coverage for the rest. Swampert is probably better still, because most points in favor of GSC Feraligatr stem from the game being just easier than the gen 3 games.
Nah. Whilst it can’t match Gen 5, you have a ton of great options if you stick it out. You need to over level weaker mons at points like Watson, but overall it’s a top-tier gen for choices. Gen 4 is defo carried by Platinum.
@@Kaiji... "If you stick to it" is exactly the point. You can pretty much divide the gen 3 dex into two halves. One half consists of the Pokemon who you can reasonably get early, but fall off hard later. The other half consists of the Pokemon who are good later, but force you to use really bad preevolutions for a long time. The ones who don't fall into either of these category are mostly gen 1 pokemon. I can only think of the starters, Swellow, Hariyama and maybe Pelliper for examples of new gen 3 Pokemon who have neither a late evolution, nor fall off significantly as the game progresses.
I can't wait to see how highly rated Treeko is gonna be in a region with mostly water, am I right? That also means other grass types such as Tropius can do well too! If Swampert is so good, why is it QUADRUPLE weak to grass then? Checkmate!

Elite 4 is worse since you don't have Dragon Claw for Drake, but if you go for Sunny Day+Solar Beam, Wallace is doable if you can sleep Wailord.
What about squirtle?
Water type has no reason not to be weak to poison.
Justice for poison offense!
I agree, would be an appropriate nerf to Water and a huge buff to Poison
That Swampert cosplay is legendary.
Bring him back for the streams
The shirt is actually red...I had to turn it blue in post
I admire the dedication to the Leaf Blade bit, even if it didn't land for me. Nobody can say you don't care about Treecko.
Gen 4 starters when.
mild criticism will NOT be tolerated
@@ImportedCheese Will you accept *strong* criticism or am I condemned to the ghouls either way
I wonder if there'll be a vid for remakes like firered or heartgold
Still think this was the best balanced starter trio for playthroughs up until gen 8. Even if Treecko lacks behind it's not as horridly bad as Serperior or as slow as Torterra.
I got bad news for you.... look at the movepool....
@@ImportedCheese Shhhhh, don't let them know. Sceptile needs its tropium
Torterra is good, what are you talking about?
@benross9174 using piplup is an absolute slog until empoleon

I have a gut feeling which one of the trio is the worst.

We did just upload a video about crimes!
As a sceptile fan I would like to say what the rest won't. Yeah treeco sucks, but hey its good in most romhacks
ok in oras too
Such a Marvelous Ending
It's all connected

gotta wait till ORAS for the treecko career change

Your Leaf Blade...it did not cut deep enough!
Dude that leaf blade story was incredible and hilarious. Love your stuff man it’s always great.
Amazing video! The leaf blade segment was hilarious
Thank you! It took me...four months lol
First time seeing one of your vids, definitely worth a sub
Thanks for watching! Check out Gen 1 and 2 starters, too
the blossom dance reference caught me really off guard incredibly done, magnificent work as always
Treecko is definitely fighting against the odds
Okay, but, Imported Cheese.. you can skip Brawly and leave him up for later! So Sceptile isn't as horrib- *gets paralyzed by Wattson*
Magneton....
Jumping ahead to Wattson is just another point for Combusken and Marshtomp. 😂
Another great one. This humble intern loved every second of leaf blade slander. At least its 90 power now.

Yeah, and in a region with too much water! It's GOTTA be the best

If you are playing Emerald Mudkip is pretty much your only option cuz Swampert, Latios, Metagross is like the best team for the frontier

sure you can create a better frontier team

Ok but sceptile’s actually perfectly fine as a subseeder in the frontier if you can breed one with leech seed. It’s especially nice in the battle pike to have a subseeder when they yeet wobbafets at you constantly in the wild Mon rooms.
This is the first review for a set of starter trios that I watched that was needlessly and overly dramatic. Yet I loved it haha
I'd say the gen 1 and 2 videos are also really dramatic lol
We all know that plusle And Minum solo with no struggle what so ever

@@ImportedCheese not sure how this zoomer lingo works, I'm sorry chef...
Mudkip is a water but he's also the 2nd best water type in the campaign unless you are playing ruby then he is just the best
Better than Blastoise and Feraligatr!
Gyarados would like a word
PLEASE! Don’t discount my boy Empoleon in the next one. I BEG OF YOU!!!
well....it's not the worst one, I can say that much
18:13 IVE ALWAYS SAID THIS. HOENN’S DEX IS SO MID.
People say Gen 4 is carried by Platinum. Imo Gen 3 is carried by the Battle Frontier.
Is it even mid?! It's so bad lol...no elemental stones until super late
Ralts is god awful until gardevoir, too
My favorite Hoenn team.
Tentacruel, Kadabra, Crobat, Graveller, and Magneton.
Nah. Whilst it can’t match Gen 5, you have a ton of great options if you stick it out. You need to over level weaker mons at points like Watson, but overall it’s a top-tier gen for choices. Gen 4 is defo carried by Platinum.
MID is putting it nicely. Where are my previous gen Pokemon to transfer? Where animated sprites?
DP is so slow, it is almost unplayable.
Welp that Leaf Blade segment got my sub.
I'm a simple girl, I hear Dimitri quote, I like.

Bro, headbutt is as strong as leaf blade and has learned by normal types around level 10. Game freak hates grass type.
They took our Razor Leaf. They took our Leech Seed + Toxic combo. They took our early evolution level. They shall not be forgiven.
@@M3rtyville Face facts comrade, even in Gen 1 Grass type had zero OU or UU Pokémon except for Exeggutor, and that was only because of its Psychic type. This is going to be the weirdest comment you have ever read. The way you said "not deadly" when talking about mudkip at around 1:06:00 didn't register correctly in my brain for a full 4 seconds so I thought you just said some jibberish. For the first time in my life, I experienced what English sounds like to a person that doesn't speak it, which up until this moment was completely impossible because I speak English myself. So I want to thank you for enabling me to have an experience that should have been completely impossible. It was obviously unintentional, and the replay seemed normal no matter how much I retried it. Therefore, me hearing it the way I did and my brain short circuiting was a miraculous one in a million moment. I just want you to know that you gave me a unique experience that can never be replaced or replicated
