If a place or situation seems hinkey (or hinky) it means it feels/seems/looks "off", something doesn't feel right. When walking in to, say, a potential ambush point, with no reason to expect an ambush, and things are "TOO quiet" - an experienced officer may have a gut feeling, "Hold back guys, there's something hinky going on here" meaning SOMETHING isn't right. Or "Something's hinkey about this place, not sure what it is..." or in refrence to a person who maybe isn't who they seem to be, or say they are - "there's something hinky about that private - I heard the whole 32nd division was wiped out" (private said he was from 32nd division, or was maybe wearing 32nd insignia etc) Hopefully that helps shed some light on what I *thought* was common slang! keep up the killer vids, Oxhorn!

There's actually 4 gunners inside the nuka cola plant. I can't remember his name but he has a holotape on him where he mentions how his leg was cut off by a nuka lurk and he only survived because another gunner dragged him away, he also mentions how Sergeant Lanier sent out a person to call for reinforcements from the gunners outside but they only hear his screams. He mentions at some point how he was the last member left and that he wants to take matters into his own hands and that's why you find him dead on the stairs reunited with his leg. There may also be a couple of dead Gunners scattered throughout the plant but I can't remember correctly because I haven't played the DLC for a couple of months.

I can't help but think that the Gunners were supposed to be another joinable faction, but because of time or budget restraints Bethesda didn't quite complete the game. just like the combat zone, that feels like it was supposed to be a focal point in the game but just ended up being were you get Cait. as great and complex as FO4 is, it could have been even more.
I don't know. The Gunners to me feel more like a postwar group imitating prewar things they learned about somewhere. My favorite theory is the Vault 75 origin story for the Gunners, though I imagine their primary base of operations is outside the Commonwealth.
I love the gunners and I wish they were a main faction that you could've joined and fought the all of the main factions and maybe Preston somehow rebuilds the minutemen and they're you're main enemy

As in, something feels or seems off about this, as in it's not what it appears to be. She could have meant that she had an odd feeling about the plant and wanted to check it out for herself.

I think what she meant by 'hinky' is the fact that the place seems dishonest. See, the bottling plant seems like an excellent target for them--defensible, high chance of quality salvage, a potentially limitless source of drink, and the incomparable potential to print their own money. It seems too good to be true, essentially, and Lanier likely has come to suspect that there is a hidden downside that she can't determine from the removed observations she's got so far. In that sense, this seemingly perfect target could be 'hinky,' dishonest, hiding dangers below its attractive surface.
Also I think by “Hinky” maybe she felt her troop would desert or perhaps they would betray her. As this place she said was a great place to set up a gunner location and the bottle caps may also make the Gunner’s want to take the caps for themselves.

When I went to the bradberton overpass, when you take the first elevator up, the assaultron dominator and the other gunner jumped off the overpass and killed themselves. But, the second part of the Overpass almost killed me because of the gunner commander.

When I was in Nuka world, I was wandering around the parks to find that one gunner atop a truck, who immediately shot at me. Now, I had just recently accuired the Quantum X01 power armor and the Nuka Nuke launcher, so I had no difficulty defeating the guy. I had wandered why there weren't more, and most importantly wanted to know why the hell the Gunners were even at Nuka World, which was infested with raiders. and so, I'm here. thanks.

Hey Oxhorn, have you seen the " genetical father" (author's term) mod? It changes how the game sets Father's appearance to make him resemble the male (due to engine restrictions) parent much more closely. Haven't gotten to a point where I can test it (I really have to settle on a final mod list I can just add to instead of restarting with new configurations) but it looks like it'll be staying on my personal list of mods that add immersion.
So much of the background for the gunners in Nuka-World makes me feel like at some point there was supposed to be some kind of questline you could do for them.
Could've sworn there were more dead Gunners in the internal staircases (bunch on dead lurks, traps, and turrets) I also thought there were a couple more in the outside staircases near the queen

I think if gunners were to wage war against nuka world raiders, Nuka world raiders would be destroyed. On a gameplay perspective, Nukaworld raiders from low level to mid level beats the gunners. But high level NW raiders cannot compete with high level Gunners, such as Colonel and brigadier. On a realistic perspective or lore perspective, Gunners easily destroys NW raiders. * Armor, NW Raiders: Rags, cloth, metal scraps strapped together Gunners: Combat armor, Power armor(and leather armor, I think) * Weapons, NW Raiders: Handmade and homemade weapons, knives. Gunners: Plasma, laser weapons, gauss rifles, fatman, missile launchers (and miniguns and gatling lasers I think) * Aerial, NW Raiders: None Gunners: Vertibirds * Robots NW Raiders: None Gunners: Sentry bots, assaultrons, protectrons, mr gutsy. Other than that, theres also leadership and unity. Leaders of nuka world dont really like each other. the three gangs dont really like each other. No complete unity and needs an overboss to hardly keep things together. While the gunners are very organized. They know who their boss is, have a clear chain of commands, and aren't separate into three or more major groups that hates each other.
What kind of ranking system do the gunners use, to me its a bit confusing since it has commanders and colonels, that's odd isn't. the USAF, US Army & USMC have col. above capt. and the USN & USCG have Capt. above Cmdr., but niether seem to have both...?
In fallout 4 it is implied that any gunner above commander is named for important lore reasons and commander is simply a boss to beat at every outpost.
But just as you said "regardless of their actual military rank" Camp Kommandant is just an administrative title not a rank. So it kind of doesn't apply.
Maybe it uses a ranking system from a different army, for example in France officer ranks go like this: lieutenant, captain, commander, lt. colonel, colonel, general. Maybe the gunner ended up with a similar system by some mysterious way

Just a quick tip on the overpass, X0-1 frame. Always wait at the power armor station, let the Gunner get in to the X0-1 and never see it, the frame will respawn and you can farm pieces off the corpse as many times as you can repeat that process. As stated, it's the only place a gunner or any mob will use X0-1 making it a pretty unique find. If you do get to the suit before the Gunner can get in it, even if they do manage to afterwards (you let them enter it) it won't respawn and you would lose the frame. I find it's best to not come here at night as the gunner who uses it will be in the bed there and won't awaken to suit up even if you kill everything else on the overpass.

There are actually 4 gunners in the bottling plant, there is a fourth, unnamed gunner about halfway down the river of quantum off to the side. And I just found a fifth on some of the stairs along the outside of the bottling plant.
I'm pretty sure that there is a gunner on the roof of the bottling plant. I think there is also one more gunner in the plant , but I'm less sure about that one.
I don't know what online dictionary you used, but hinky is a fairly common term where I live. It's really more like "suspicious." The sergeant was saying something is funny about that bottling plant, odd or suspicious, like a trap. Saying a situation is "hinky" is kind of like "I have a bad feeling about this."

If I remember correctly, there is another group of Gunners in Nuka World. Heading from the Power Plant toward Bradberton, by hugging the Power Plant side of the map, you'll come across Gunners defending a tower with a windmill (again, if I remember correctly). I don't remember if there is any lore there, but I only went there on my very first Nuka World playthrough.

There's supposed to be a holotape next to Lanier. You must have missed it or knocked it away. It explicitly says that it's the Nuka lurks who killed them all, the last recording by someone who's bleeding out.

He is told that plant DNA could be taken to see if the two samples are the same. He sends in two identical samples claiming they are from different plants. Later his frustrated lab tech tells him that she screwed up because the DNA from both samples match each other. He then informs her that they were the same. She asks why? He says, "I don't know, the idea of plants having DNA seemed hinky to me" and so he created a double blind test for her just to be sure.
I pickpocketed the core of the other gunner in power armor and killed him. Oddly enough the suit wasn't marked stolen afterwards. Took it back to my sunshine tidings settlement for safe keeping. Only to have the gunner respawn in the suit. Managed to get him back out before my robots finished him off.
I honestly would’ve liked it if in addition to getting open season from Preston and the one doctor in Nuka Town maybe you get to talk to a gunner who refers you to Lanear or someone else of the gunners to destroy the raiders with their help, then you help them turn on the power, turn on the radio to get Cyprus to nuka world and you become a gunner in some way

When I played fallout 4, I wondered, "wait" DC isn't THAT far from Boston, especially if, as the lore proved, the division head of the SRB traveled that far to personally reclaim a single synth, back when they were still calling them androids, shouldn't caravans and the like be able to travel and establish communications between the Capital Wasteland and The Commonwealth? I don't think she was doubting her squad, IMHO she thought there was more to the bottling plant than she saw at first glance and wanted to "lead from the front". the reason for the punch to the private, Contemporary discipline practices would not work in a post apocalypse , I've noticed that anytime anyone questions a Gunner Commander that it is met with violence , this keeps the hierarchy in place. it also makes me wonder how one moves up in the Gunner Society. I'm almost willing to bet that moving up in rank is this much challenging their leaders in physical battle as much as performance.
Maybe the cut holotape would have triggered the questline to clear the mist in kiddie kingdom. It just seems to me like some cut content is alternative triggers for different questlines. Can't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment but it's something I've noticed in a few videos I've seen that talked about cut content.

One thing I did notice in Lanier's holotape, was she said that the coms had been damaged beyond repair. Which answers my other question. Why, if the mountains were blocking coms back to hq, did't they just send someone with a radio back far enough to report? Seems like that would be military protocol.

Hinky is a clue. It is a regional dialect that appears to be used by people in the Chicago area. This hints that these gunners are not from boston, but from the midwest. I suspect that they are either remnants of the Enclave, or are another faction we will find out about in a later game, 10 years from now...
I believe that the Gunners are a much larger faction than they appear. And they are coming from a larger base elsewhere. I hope in Fallout 5 this is explored and perhaps the Gunners could become a faction the player can join.
Yeah the Gunners being from outside the commonwealth is the feeling i got too, can't remember if it's ever outright said, hopefully we see them in the next game being used as something more then just "higher level enemy faction b", i got that is needed for game design but would love to see more done with it..

Hey Ox, in common parlance, "hinkey" can also mean strange, unusual, or can be used to describe something as being "off." As in, something feels or seems off about this, as in it's not what it appears to be. She could have meant that she had an odd feeling about the plant and wanted to check it out for herself.
The scary thing is that during my fifth playthrough, I am attempting to go through Nuka-World before meeting Preston AND with no Power Armor. I was trying to explore Nuka-World in full and found this site like three days ago. Now this video pops up in my recommended feed. Never seen this before, I swear.

Yeah, "hinky" is often used to mean "suspicious" in that way - something feels wrong, gives you pause, etc. I don't think Oxhorn's conclusion - that Lanier didn't trust her team - was necessarily true. It certainly wasn't the meaning of "hinky" as she used it.
Hinky usually to a situation that looks okay but you have a gut feeling, or suspicion that something is wrong, but nothing definite. In a way that is probably why Lanier went as she was no doubt the Gunners' heavy hitter there and felt that if she went the team would succeed.
I always thought of 'hinky' as the American equivalent of 'dodgy'.
Dodgy usually has a reasoning behind it? Like, "That car looks dodgy" would be a car that you're not sure will make it where you're going.

I think what she meant by 'hinky' is the fact that the place seems dishonest. See, the bottling plant seems like an excellent target for them--defensible, high chance of quality salvage, a potentially limitless source of drink, and the incomparable potential to print their own money. It seems too good to be true, essentially, and Lanier likely has come to suspect that there is a hidden downside that she can't determine from the removed observations she's got so far. In that sense, this seemingly perfect target could be 'hinky,' dishonest, hiding dangers below its attractive surface.
Also I think by “Hinky” maybe she felt her troop would desert or perhaps they would betray her. As this place she said was a great place to set up a gunner location and the bottle caps may also make the Gunner’s want to take the caps for themselves.

When I went to the bradberton overpass, when you take the first elevator up, the assaultron dominator and the other gunner jumped off the overpass and killed themselves. But, the second part of the Overpass almost killed me because of the gunner commander.

When I was in Nuka world, I was wandering around the parks to find that one gunner atop a truck, who immediately shot at me.
Now, I had just recently accuired the Quantum X01 power armor and the Nuka Nuke launcher, so I had no difficulty defeating the guy.
I had wandered why there weren't more, and most importantly wanted to know why the hell the Gunners were even at Nuka World, which was infested with raiders.

Hey Oxhorn, have you seen the " genetical father" (author's term) mod? It changes how the game sets Father's appearance to make him resemble the male (due to engine restrictions) parent much more closely. Haven't gotten to a point where I can test it (I really have to settle on a final mod list I can just add to instead of restarting with new configurations) but it looks like it'll be staying on my personal list of mods that add immersion.
I'm sad you can't join the gunners. They're like an evil version of the minutemen.
So much of the background for the gunners in Nuka-World makes me feel like at some point there was supposed to be some kind of questline you could do for them.
Could've sworn there were more dead Gunners in the internal staircases (bunch on dead lurks, traps, and turrets) I also thought there were a couple more in the outside staircases near the queen

"Something feels hinky" roughly equates to "Something feels off" as in there is something else to the bottling plant besides just bottling Nuka Cola. Could be a reference to her having a suspicion about the existence of the research facility under the bottling plant.

The gunners are such an interesting faction. I am surprised there was never an opportunity to join them.
I think if gunners were to wage war against nuka world raiders, Nuka world raiders would be destroyed.
On a gameplay perspective, Nukaworld raiders from low level to mid level beats the gunners. But high level NW raiders cannot compete with high level Gunners, such as Colonel and brigadier.
On a realistic perspective or lore perspective, Gunners easily destroys NW raiders.

NW Raiders: Rags, cloth, metal scraps strapped together
Gunners: Combat armor, Power armor(and leather armor, I think)
* Weapons,
NW Raiders: Handmade and homemade weapons, knives.
Gunners: Plasma, laser weapons, gauss rifles, fatman, missile launchers (and miniguns and gatling lasers I think)
* Aerial,
NW Raiders: None
Gunners: Vertibirds
* Robots
NW Raiders: None
Gunners: Sentry bots, assaultrons, protectrons, mr gutsy.
Other than that, theres also leadership and unity. Leaders of nuka world dont really like each other. the three gangs dont really like each other. No complete unity and needs an overboss to hardly keep things together.
While the gunners are very organized. They know who their boss is, have a clear chain of commands, and aren't separate into three or more major groups that hates each other.
When I'm playing fallout 3 (I'm an old gen scrublord) i have your playlists on shuffle, fallout is just so damn interesting!
What kind of ranking system do the gunners use, to me its a bit confusing since it has commanders and colonels, that's odd isn't. the USAF, US Army & USMC have col. above capt. and the USN & USCG have Capt. above Cmdr., but niether seem to have both...?
In fallout 4 it is implied that any gunner above commander is named for important lore reasons and commander is simply a boss to beat at every outpost.
Like in all the WWII movies where the person in charge of a POW camp is the Camp Kommandant regardless of their actual military rank.
But just as you said "regardless of their actual military rank" Camp Kommandant is just an administrative title not a rank. So it kind of doesn't apply.
The name thing kind doesn't apply either since those below commander have names for lore reasons as well.
Maybe it uses a ranking system from a different army, for example in France officer ranks go like this: lieutenant, captain, commander, lt. colonel, colonel, general. Maybe the gunner ended up with a similar system by some mysterious way

Just a quick tip on the overpass, X0-1 frame. Always wait at the power armor station, let the Gunner get in to the X0-1 and never see it, the frame will respawn and you can farm pieces off the corpse as many times as you can repeat that process. As stated, it's the only place a gunner or any mob will use X0-1 making it a pretty unique find.
If you do get to the suit before the Gunner can get in it, even if they do manage to afterwards (you let them enter it) it won't respawn and you would lose the frame. I find it's best to not come here at night as the gunner who uses it will be in the bed there and won't awaken to suit up even if you kill everything else on the overpass.

I wish there was a mod so you can make your own gang for nuka world and have your own guns and stuff

There are actually 4 gunners in the bottling plant, there is a fourth, unnamed gunner about halfway down the river of quantum off to the side. And I just found a fifth on some of the stairs along the outside of the bottling plant.

I'm pretty sure that there is a gunner on the roof of the bottling plant. I think there is also one more gunner in the plant , but I'm less sure about that one.

I don't know what online dictionary you used, but hinky is a fairly common term where I live. It's really more like "suspicious." The sergeant was saying something is funny about that bottling plant, odd or suspicious, like a trap. Saying a situation is "hinky" is kind of like "I have a bad feeling about this."

If I remember correctly, there is another group of Gunners in Nuka World. Heading from the Power Plant toward Bradberton, by hugging the Power Plant side of the map, you'll come across Gunners defending a tower with a windmill (again, if I remember correctly). I don't remember if there is any lore there, but I only went there on my very first Nuka World playthrough.

There's supposed to be a holotape next to Lanier. You must have missed it or knocked it away. It explicitly says that it's the Nuka lurks who killed them all, the last recording by someone who's bleeding out.
Hinky is a term meaning that something is "off", having a gut feeling that something just isn't right. It is something akin to instinct or suspicion that some key piece of information is missing or some key assumption is wrong.
Example: in the TV show NCIS lead investigator Gibbs suspects a woman of lying and discovers similar plant life in her yard as that which appears in a crime scene. He is told that plant DNA could be taken to see if the two samples are the same. He sends in two identical samples claiming they are from different plants. Later his frustrated lab tech tells him that she screwed up because the DNA from both samples match each other. He then informs her that they were the same. She asks why? He says, "I don't know, the idea of plants having DNA seemed hinky to me" and so he created a double blind test for her just to be sure.
Abby says 'hinky' fairly often.
I pickpocketed the core of the other gunner in power armor and killed him. Oddly enough the suit wasn't marked stolen afterwards. Took it back to my sunshine tidings settlement for safe keeping. Only to have the gunner respawn in the suit. Managed to get him back out before my robots finished him off.
I honestly would’ve liked it if in addition to getting open season from Preston and the one doctor in Nuka Town maybe you get to talk to a gunner who refers you to Lanear or someone else of the gunners to destroy the raiders with their help, then you help them turn on the power, turn on the radio to get Cyprus to nuka world and you become a gunner in some way
Hey, Oxhorn, odd question. A bit off your usual topic, but have you considered doing Fallout 3 videos? Your fascination with The Gunners made me think you might be interested in the Talon Company Mercenaries, from Fallout 3. When I played fallout 4, I wondered, "wait" DC isn't THAT far from Boston, especially if, as the lore proved, the division head of the SRB traveled that far to personally reclaim a single synth, back when they were still calling them androids, shouldn't caravans and the like be able to travel and establish communications between the Capital Wasteland and The Commonwealth? Where is Talon Company? Do they have any connection with The Gunners?

Hinky is also a term to describe a place or situation, essentially breaks down to " all is not as it seems". I don't think she was doubting her squad, IMHO she thought there was more to the bottling plant than she saw at first glance and wanted to "lead from the front". the reason for the punch to the private, Contemporary discipline practices would not work in a post apocalypse , I've noticed that anytime anyone questions a Gunner Commander that it is met with violence , this keeps the hierarchy in place. it also makes me wonder how one moves up in the Gunner Society. I'm almost willing to bet that moving up in rank is this much challenging their leaders in physical battle as much as performance.

Thats a little saddening and maybe terrifying- taking a decently peaceful nap, and then you are attacked and killed by crab men.
Maybe the cut holotape would have triggered the questline to clear the mist in kiddie kingdom. It just seems to me like some cut content is alternative triggers for different questlines. Can't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment but it's something I've noticed in a few videos I've seen that talked about cut content.

One thing I did notice in Lanier's holotape, was she said that the coms had been damaged beyond repair. Which answers my other question. Why, if the mountains were blocking coms back to hq, did't they just send someone with a radio back far enough to report? Seems like that would be military protocol.

Hinky is a clue. It is a regional dialect that appears to be used by people in the Chicago area. This hints that these gunners are not from boston, but from the midwest. I suspect that they are either remnants of the Enclave, or are another faction we will find out about in a later game, 10 years from now...
I believe that the Gunners are a much larger faction than they appear. And they are coming from a larger base elsewhere. I hope in Fallout 5 this is explored and perhaps the Gunners could become a faction the player can join.
Yeah the Gunners being from outside the commonwealth is the feeling i got too, can't remember if it's ever outright said, hopefully we see them in the next game being used as something more then just "higher level enemy faction b", i got that is needed for game design but would love to see more done with it..
