I don't find the frequent cuts of short bits frustrating, but alienating. Most of the "good parts" are further developed on other albums. It's a good listen, or more precisely, an interesting listen, but I rarely feel like revisiting. A bunch of other FZ albums further down your list (meaning: not so good in your opinion) I tend to spin much more frequently. I don't have the original release yet, so I'm interested in your review of that - once I get to the posthumous reviews. :) That laugh is phenomenal! Love it! :)
Over the years, as I literally spent too much time listening to Zappa, I find that my new favorites become the albums and pieces that also alienated me for so long. I find those abrupt cuts and short bits which I now know are coming and am expecting make perfect sense and I can’t imagine the songs/albums without them. And THEN I start to appreciate them and love them and feel like I get Zappa more. So in Zappa’s instance, Familiarity Breeds Favoritism!
This is Frank‘s first masterpiece. Sort of a Big Bang. So many later songs have their roots here.
I like that Big Bang analogy....
