Although I teach tourism now, my formal education is in anthropology, so I’m interested in all cultures, but I probably find Japan the most culturally interesting. The way they mix older traditions into modern life is interesting. It’s all baffling until you understand a little of Japanese tradition and worldview. Social structure and hierarchy determining what vocabulary you use, the dynamic between the genders, and the joy and pride the Japanese take from they feel for their own culture is astonishing. The struggle to be an individual in a culture that values consensus and conformity is interesting too.
