I still remember the long debates people would have about whether or not this movie was a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie, but like why can’t it be both, but also it’s obviously a Halloween movie
I feel like this film is a child's earliest indicator of future gothness - you prefer Halloweentown over Christmas town, the residents don't scare you at all, and you fancy Jack or Sally (or both) and thier final duet is the height of romance
I mean if people were attracted to him because of his voice(s) I'd get it, because I've realized recently that for me personally, that's sometimes all it takes (speaking as someone attracted to V from V for Vendetta). 😆😉
This movvie is an excellent example of cultural appropriation! Jack tries to take the elements of Christmas without understanding what makes Christmas.
Never thought about it that way, that’s a great perspective. I also appreciate that once he realized he’s failed, he accepts it and is like “well I had fun and f**ked some things up, I need to go back to doing what I do best.”
Hearing Sally's song reminded me of the time in middle school when I heard Amy Lee's version and decided to sing it for an audition in front of an entire class and only one person got the reference and I was so disappointed
Watching this as a kid, then growing up and getting rampagingly into Oingo Boingo, then coming BACK to this movie and hearing so much of Danny Elfman's musical style in this movie is a TREAT
@PinkPopcast Don't worry, you're Only a Lad. You'll have a lot of Gratitude towards yourself if you check out those albums, but don't take too long since No One Lives Forever. Have a listen, they're a real Dead Man's Party. There's some Weird Science in those songs and they make every day feel like Just Another Day.
I recently heard how when Danny was recording these songs, it was around the same time he'd wanted to move on from Oingo Boingo. To me, that puts so much more emotion into "Jack's Lament" especially, knowing he too was feeling dissatisfied with his (then) current position. Particularly the lines "If they only understood, he'd give it all up, if he only could," and "The fame and praise come year after year, does nothing for these empty tears." 💔
I always figured that what ever world you're in you see the other doors, Jack started in Halloween world so there wasn't a Halloween door, and when he went into the Christmas world he would have to re-enter through the Halloween door to go back

Glad I’m not the only one that wasn’t SUPER into this one like a lot of my friends were, as great as it was 😅 Also, not me as a child thinking Sally and Emily (Corpse Bride) were the same person, and that she finally got her happy ending in this random, holiday-themed dimension with a dude who loved her 🥰 now that I’m older, staying delulu is the solulu 😂😂😂

This wasn’t my favorite movie either growing up, but I love watching stop motion! It’s so cool to think about what went into it. Loved the reaction, happy spooky season!
Watched this for the first time last year and absolutely loved it…I mainly watched it because I was going on a Disney cruise for Halloween on the High Seas and was dressing up as Sally so I wanted to make sure I knew more about the characters
They REALLY wanted jack to havw eyeballs, and by they i mean the suits, but the creators FOUGHT to let him stay a hollow-eyed skeleton, and rolled with the punches. It makes him *WAY* more iconic and memorable, even if it makes him scarier to younger kids. Hes a skeleton, hes not from christmas or valentines, hes from HALLOWEEN mf!
I always thought maybe there might be a parallel between nightmare before Christmas and the corpse bride. Like….. what if Victor and Veronica found each other as Jake and Sally in the afterlife aka Halloween town?
From what I got each Holiday has the other doors so Halloween town doesnt have a pumpkin one cause they are alreay in it. We from our world went into it and are following Jack so when Jack comesback home, he's going into the pumpkin one that in the Xmas world. So theres no "exsit" only entrances like a Russian doll almost. Another theory is that Halloween town is anyting that relates to their holiday gets them back hole but they have to get to a different holiday through their holiday door. Like anything decrepted gets to Halloween town. Also the "chocolate" monstor is mad from mud😂
I would like to formally apologize to everyone who's sat through this movie with me at any point because even now at 31, I am physically incapable of shutting the fuck up and not quoting the ENTIRE THING. Also, the point about the Hinterlands holiday doors is something that's been plaguing me since I was a pre-teen and it's SO VALIDATING to hear someone else question it 😂
Random but I am soooo excited for your Hearstopper 3 commentary!!! (No rush of course I'm happy to watch all of your other releases as well, you guys are always great :) )
There are no "exit" doors. Each holiday town has its own clearing in the forest that serves as an entrance hub to all the other towns. When Jack meets Halloween Town's hub, there is no Halloween Town entrance because Jack is already in Halloween Town. When he goes to Christmas Town and goes to leave, he'll see his Halloween Town door but no Christmas door because he's currently in Christmas town. In the beginning of the movie, we as the audience can see a Halloween Door and all the other Holiday Doors because we're coming from "our" world. And "our" world doesn't get a door because all the Holiday towns are connected to us organically within the town itself (when Halloween Town does Halloween, they don't go through a door to deliver Halloween in "our" world, and Christmas Town uses Santa's sleigh to access "our" world).
Shea Ernshaw wrote a book that's after the events of the movie and its all about Sally. She goes to some of the other worlds to save the town by herself, find out more about her true self, and become more confident to be the queen of Halloween town 💜🎃🧡 i have loved this movie since i was a kid and now my one year old loves it as well 😊
I didn't think this was trippy when I saw it back in 93 because we were raised on Rankin and Bass holiday shows. They were all stop motion and waaaay trippier.
Oh it takes years to make a stop motion film. The most thing that takes time is the facial expressions. I really have a great appreciation when it comes to Burton’s and Henry Selicks animation. I actually when to the LAIKA studio once for a tour when they were making box trolls. Such a cool experience
I remember watching this with my mom when I was 4 and I was TERRIFIED by the time the opening song ended. To this day I cannot watch this movie by myself, especially the opening scene. I surprisingly had no problems with coraline but the semi scary kids movie is what freaks me out 😭
I once saw a fanart circling around that suggested that Jack is The Grinch once he died and now I can't unsee it. Personally, I think that silly little theory makes it more enjoyable, as someone who also was never a huge fan of this movie- since I was a spooky alternative kid it was always assumed I was really into it, I got tired of the constant marketing too.
It doesn't really make sense as The Grinch, at the end figured out what the true meaning of Christmas is while Jack doesn't hence why he had to research and do experiments in order to figure it out and he fails, deciding to make it his own and in his own way. Besides, Jack Skellington's bone structure doesn't match The Grinch's body. Also they should have the same name and personality between life and death, like with dead guys in Coco.
There are so many better Halloween and Christmas movies, this is a last resort for me. So glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t care for it as I only ever see people talking about how amazing it is. Love you guys!!
I mean I’m not bashing your opinion you are allowed to not like it 100% and that’s ok but the fact is this movie is an absolute masterpiece and it is amazing
The door isn't like a real door like the front door to your house. It's a portal. Each town has it's own set of portals. That clearing is the set of portals in Halloween Town. Christmas Town has it's own set of portals. That's how he stumbled upon it without exiting the Halloween door first, because those doors that Jack found all exist in Halloween Town.
How insane is it that a film about Halloween permeating Christmas became so in grained in pop culture it effectively achieved Jacks dream in the real world. 😱
There are actually several musical adaptations, but no official one. Lots of high school and amateur theatre troupe stuff though. A lot of them are also on TH-cam. The No Refund Theatre one is ok. Birmingham Community Theatre also made one that's available in full on youtube.
Man this movie was a staple in our house, I feel like I could recite it word for word at like 5 😂 My son had this movie on repeat for like 2 years and he loves it still!
PLEASE do Brave Little Toaster! Also this is my favorite Disney movie by a lot. I was 9 when it came out and I thought it was the coolest, funniest thing I'd ever seen. My parents were HORRIFIED.
TBH, as a Brit, this is perfect Xmas fare as we have a tradition in the UK of ghost stories for Christmas. So spooky and uncanny stories are intimately entwined with Xmas season. It's possibly linked to pre-Christian pagan traditions that thankly persisted . Nothing better than ghosts at Christmas!👻🎄
I usually watch this every year for Halloween. Haven’t watched it this year but I did listen to the soundtrack while I was decorating for Halloween. Definitely put me in a spooky mood. On the soundtrack there is a closing number narrated by Patrick Stewart that describes how the holidays became aware of each other and Santa decided to visit Halloween town to see Jack years later and discovered that he had 4 or 5 skeleton children. How he and Sally had children, feel free to speculate wildly. While I personally love this movie, I can understand people being frustrated with it because it is everywhere around Halloween and Christmas. But in my unofficial contract for my life, I have a clause that says I have to respect all stop motion movies because I know it is a tedious process to create them. Another interesting voice in the movie is Jack’s speaking voice, he is played by Prince Humperdinck from the Princess Bride. That would definitely be one to consider for a future reaction. And of course Rest in peace to Ken Page, the voice of Oogie Boogie. Thanks for this guys, I’ve been having issues with both my physical and mental health lately and this definitely made me feel better. Edited to add: if you want a laugh, feel free to check out Hanukah town from robot chicken.
Its so wild that this is so associated with Tim Burton when Henry Selick directed it. Tim Burton did write the original poem it was based off of, and he drew some very early character art and produced, but he was miles away directing Batman while this was being made. The studio attached his name to the title though as they thought it would sell better and so everyone gives Tim Burton credit for Henry Selick's work.
0:31I also have a beef with this movie because it was always played at my school and they put other movies in second to this one. But it's a good movie nonetheless
I listened to some of Danny Elfman's original demos for the non-Jack songs last month and his interpretation of "Oogie Boogie's Song" is actually hilarious, mainly due to how different his approach sounds compared to Ken Page (RIP). Ken's is menacing and taunting, Danny like he's fan-boying (I compared it to Will Ferrell screaming "SAAANTAA!" and gave myself a good laugh). 💀🎄
I first watched this as a teen, and still love Jack! He's really trying to make Christmas work! 🎃👻🎄❄️🎅 But I think it would have been too scary for me as a kid 😂
Thank you for the reaction. I was really happy to hear you both appreciate the film but its not a favorite. Im impressed with the creativity, I love the music, I like the aesthetic, there are several items I want to make as Holiday decor, but despite all that I just dont like the movie that much. I've listed to the soundtrack dozens of times and specific songs hundreds of times, but I've only watched the movie like 2 and a half times? In something like 20 years. Meanwhile, I've seen Hocus Pocus probably about 20 times and Adams Family far more than that (Health issues most of my life means some days I will just watch the same movie on repeat over and over). Nightmare Before Christmas seems like it should be the kind of film I'd watch again and again, but while watching it Im just kind of meh and would rather just be listening to the soundtrack. However Im considering seeing it on the big screen for the first time as it's coming to a local theatre later this month. I can't help wishing it was a sing-along version though. Now that would be an experience... so long as there was a good group there to enjoy it with.
This movie came out a year after I was born, my all-time favorite movie as a child AND I AM JUST NOW LEARNING THE MAYOR IS A TWO-FACED POLITICIAN?!?!?!🤯😳🤣 Countless times, I would watch this year round & amping up the frequency from fall to Dec 26th, but never once... In fairness to my younger self, I did literally grow up with this movie so rewatches as an adult are all heavily tinged with nostalgia, but still. The fact that I never made the mental leap of "how funny, the mayor has a happy & sad/distressed face, he's so silly" to "he is literally a two-faced politician" until just now... Tad embarrassing 😂
This is the first "scary" movie my kids watched when they were 4 and 5 years old. I allowed it, definitely worried a bit, but they *loved* it and have watched it every year now for 6 years during spooky season. My youngest is now 10 and a scary movie fan. It's hard finding scary movies for kids to watch, though. Makes me wish things like Are You Afraid of the Dark? still existed.
Someone needs to make the St. Patrick’s Day movie for adults where it’s just people being stupid and drunk and then hungover as hell the next day. Instead of what’s this, the song would be what the hell did I drink last night or why did I drink so much? The horror we can all relate to

Also this is my favorite Disney movie by a lot. I was 9 when it came out and I thought it was the coolest, funniest thing I'd ever seen. My parents were HORRIFIED.
Zero’s nose is actually an orange jack o lantern 🎃👻
TBH, as a Brit, this is perfect Xmas fare as we have a tradition in the UK of ghost stories for Christmas. So spooky and uncanny stories are intimately entwined with Xmas season. It's possibly linked to pre-Christian pagan traditions that thankly persisted . Nothing better than ghosts at Christmas!👻🎄
Just listening to the intro I'm very excited to see the rest of this. Yall are prepping me for the spooky season for real ❤️ 🎃
🥰🥰
My favorite childhood memory. I watch it yearly with my younger sis
I do love HP 😆😆 every month
Nice ❤️
That brave little toaster comment had me dying
I 100% agree with Rizzo about the Haunted Mansion!
Christmas town has insane asylums.
We need THAT movie.
This was one of my childhood favorites. The most recent one I rewatched it was last year on Halloween to commemorate its 30th anniversary.
24:45 its actually a glowing jack-o-lantern 🎃
Its so wild that this is so associated with Tim Burton when Henry Selick directed it. Tim Burton did write the original poem it was based off of, and he drew some very early character art and produced, but he was miles away directing Batman while this was being made. The studio attached his name to the title though as they thought it would sell better and so everyone gives Tim Burton credit for Henry Selick's work.
I got to watch this again recently in theaters, this movie is still one of my top 10 during the holidays
0:31I also have a beef with this movie because it was always played at my school and they put other movies in second to this one. But it's a good movie nonetheless
EXACTLY! It's extremely well done... and yet....
My parents didn't let's us watch this for religious reasons but let us watch other things very similar 😂😂 but as a teen I finally saw it and loved it!
hahaha - that was my childhood yeesh! lol
Fun fact, Catherine O'Hara voices both Sally and the kid Shock in this movie
I listened to some of Danny Elfman's original demos for the non-Jack songs last month and his interpretation of "Oogie Boogie's Song" is actually hilarious, mainly due to how different his approach sounds compared to Ken Page (RIP). Ken's is menacing and taunting, Danny like he's fan-boying (I compared it to Will Ferrell screaming "SAAANTAA!" and gave myself a good laugh). 💀🎄
Ooh we need to listen!
Love you guys always get excited to see you both xx
🥰🥰
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THESE EPISODES!!!
I think each 'holiday land' has their own holiday grove, and that's why Jack isn't coming through the halloween door.
YES please watch The Brave Little Toaster 🙏🏻 That and Watership Down were maybe the darkest movies I was obsessed with as a little kid 😅
That intro was beyond impressive ♥️
I am genuinely in love with Benji's shirt💖
I first watched this as a teen, and still love Jack! He's really trying to make Christmas work! 🎃👻🎄❄️🎅
But I think it would have been too scary for me as a kid 😂
Yea surprisingly creepy for a kids movie lol
OMG MY FAV MOVIE AND MY FAV PODCAST/REACTION CHANNEL ALL AT ONES!?
ugh my family used to watch this every year!! i can recite every line
Now that would be an experience... so long as there was a good group there to enjoy it with.
i remember learning about how the mayor was a two-faced politician and gdi, that's so clever lol
I feel the same way as Rizzo about the Nightmare Before Christmas layover for Haunted Mansion 😭
This movie came out a year after I was born, my all-time favorite movie as a child AND I AM JUST NOW LEARNING THE MAYOR IS A TWO-FACED POLITICIAN?!?!?!🤯😳🤣
Countless times, I would watch this year round & amping up the frequency from fall to Dec 26th, but never once...
I handcrocheted the entire main cast of halloweentown for a coworker. Best thing ive done in a while
This is the first "scary" movie my kids watched when they were 4 and 5 years old.
What's behind the St. Patrick's day door 😆
Someone needs to make the St. Patrick’s Day movie for adults where it’s just people being stupid and drunk and then hungover as hell the next day. Instead of what’s this, the song would be what the hell did I drink last night or why did I drink so much? The horror we can all relate to
