Good, critical reviews-instead of completely dismissing big box bikes this channel keeps it real! Will be following while modding my hydroform for light trails!
I'm just now getting into Mountain Biking, and I want to thank you for these videos. Saving for an expensive bike is in my future, but for now, I use a Schwinn from Walmart. 150 dollars, and it got me back into biking. I love your channel. I come here for honest budget bike reviews. I enjoy Seth's Bike Hacks for future purchases, and dreaming. lol. Thanks for keeping it real for normal every day people.
What I like about your channel is you give perspective on who should buy these bikes and why. This price range is probably good for someone starting out mountain biking then later upgrading into a more expensive bike.
Here’s revisiting a 3 year old video of yours Kev to say thanks! Without your channel I would have no knowledge of bikes like the Hydroform. I picked up a brand new one (still has the Walmart hang tags on it) today…never ridden…$100! I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet but for $100 I couldn’t pass it up.
I know its not a mountain bike, but you inspired me to actually look at the bikes that have been sitting in the garage forever and see if I can fix one up. Turns out I have an old Huffy Santa Fe 10 series with some extras on it. I got it cleaned up a good bit and rode it around for a minute. I'm hoping I can get it running pretty smoothly.
I’ve been taking care of a young men’s group bicycles about 120 of them..the boys can be hard on bikes just because their boys. I’ve stayed away from Walmart bikes because of pore quality..but after watching your videos lm taking a second look. I bought a Schwinn Santa’s mountain bike for my self and its not a bad bike. Hydraulic brakes, long bars, hard tale which I like. Putting one of the boys on full suspension bike is like putting a kid on a trampoline and telling them not two jump! And the bikes don’t fare well when they are treated like a trampoline.. oh and I also ordered two of the Lectric XL,s. The price was just to good for a class 3 bike. Thanks Allen berry aka 16 doc
Surprisingly nice bike, if you make some upgrades, of course. Also nice music in very end of this episode! Thanx Kev, I like your videos a lot! Great Job!
Thanks for all your upgrades I just swapped out my 3 by to a 1 by 32 tooth it really rides nice and a wake stim and longer bars I believe a 146 thanks again
I would love to see more about this bike. I have a hardtail felt 29er and am wanting a full suspension 29er. However, seeing that i have changed literally every part on my felt, i dont want to spend alot of money on a full suspension bike, and then spend a ton more on upgrades. If the frame on this hyper turns out to be decent i would highly consider getting one. Also, the color looks stunning so thats a plus!
Normally my girlfriend wants me to just go to bed and get off youtube.. I really enjoy your videos and get excited about new videos. Lol but the best thing of all is when the other day. My girlfriend said " will you watch some kevcentral".. why.. "his voice is soothing and helps me fall asleep".. lmao. Well I know now were both happy with your videos!! Keep it up buddy!!
Kevin, all of your reviews, videography, and editing are spot on and very well done! This bike looks like a lot of fun for 200 bux. Can't wait to see what you do with project HYDRO!
Makes for a good mid-drive e-bike conversion. Frame creaks. Rear shock works. Electric blue color is cool. Can pass as an expensive MTB to those not familiar with high quality MTBs. My Hyrdo Hyper DIY E-bike has 1700 miles on it and hasn’t fell apart.
Its a bit like my wife, looks good at night and goes fast down hills. Not bad for the price , pitty about the 7 speed , makes a good 1x hard to do with a 10 speed cassette prob not fitting on that hub , It would be a homeless mans 1x7 , which is worse than a poormans 1x8. Look forward to the project makeover because it has potential.
For some unexplainable reason I'm drawn to this channel. Between my 3 bikes I have about $12K worth of mountain bikes (not counting a fat bike I'm selling) but yet I'm intrigued by these "cheap" bikes. For poops and giggles I might be tempted to buy one of these "department store" or "Walmart" bikes and take it on one of my regular trails and see how it does.
Yeah, I have a 3 thousand dollar folding bike and a 7 thousand dollar minivelo road bike (6.5kg). Not really interested in mountain bikes and really not in the low end of the market. But I subbed this channel anyway. I like Kevs honest and ego free style, plus its a view into a world of bikes I know nothing about.
I have four bikes that cost over $1k each. My latest expensive bike bike was $3k. My new hardtail is a $250 Walmart Schwinn, LOL. I did upgrade a bunch of things though, but that's half the fun!
Thanks for video. I just bought a $400 Scott Aspect bike. Surprising that the hyper same many of the components 3x7 drive with the tourney front and rear derailurs and shimano trigger shifters. 29 inch rims and no disc brakes😞
I'd rather layaway a midrange bike with my $200 dollars than buy a Wal-Mart bike. However, if I had nothing to begin with, this may be a better option to upgrade as you go compared to the XR Pro. I can't wait to see how it stacks up! By the way, Kev. I just bought a left over Raleigh Rudux 3 I found at Erik's Bikes in Madison Wisconsin! $650 bucks $75 shipping! It may have been the last one online anywhere!
@@KevCentral Well I didn't get it yet. Just ordered it 2 days ago. I'll let you know on the next video! I found you on here the other day and watched a lot of your vids. I fell in love with the Redux 3 the day I saw it.
@ You don't have to buy a $2000 frame to build a good bike. I get what Kevin is doing. I never said for him to not buy Wal-Mart bikes and weed out the bad ones and find the good ones. I've been there and done that. I'm not sure why you even had to mention what you stated at all. Even Kev didn't say anything. Why did you? It makes no sense. Us? Who is us? Tell me you are not speaking for every single person who watches Kev. You must be offended because I won't build up a Wal-Mart bike or something. I already have. Kev or myself aren't the first people to ever do it, and we won't be the last.
I recently bought a used diamondback trace bike (it's was few months old ) and I'm trying to upgrade the tires and buy brake disc and put them on t It ..this will be little by little but I'm going to do that... especially everytime I see your videos make me go for it... thanks man
I have quite a spare parts laying around I might just buy this and turn this one into a 1x10 or heck even Eagle. 36lbs for a suspensión is not bad at all. Airfork and getting rid of that crankset will drop the weight easily maybe around 30lbs area. Man Im tempted to buy.
Straight headsets with the bearings inside the frame not out side can usually be fitted with a cane Creek EC44 tapered adapter. This means you can run a tapered fork in a straight head tube. I think it would work on this bike and maybe the Carbon X also.
I bought a genesis rct with an aluminum body and this bike is a surprisingly good trail bike. I haven’t had any problems with it. Climbing is easy the bike truly light weight. And just this past Saturday I had a crash hit a tree head on lost control on a jump long story but the bike survived. Handle bars was a little crooked from the impact but nothing was wrong with it. And I nailed the tree left a dent in the tree broke my phone mount my cage and I’m pretty bruised up. But the bike is fine. I highly recommend it for anyone not watnting to pay an arm and leg for a good teail bike
You guys are so lucky that you even get half decent Mountainbikes for that cheap. The cheapest acually usable Fully you can buy in germany is 1000€ on sale. A kids version you can get from 500€ and more.
Good budget full suspension bike upgrade the front suspension fork with a RockShox and a DNM rear shock upgrade you might have a descent full suspension bike for the price considering you do a once over the bike to adjust everything properly.
Part of the fun of buying a cheap bike with a decent frame is to gradually upgrade it to a better bike. I really like working on them myself to learn as much bike mechanics as I can without the worry of botching the job on a really expensive bike.. I leave that to the bike shops.. It is amazing what a difference just adding decent pedals, a new saddle and a wider handlebar can make. Of course I don't usually stop there and end up getting pretty carried away.. But now I have a pretty good stock of parts to work with for my next bike. Now the question of how to pick a good frame and basic components for my next one..
They make those 7 speed free wheels in several different gear ranges. I borrowed a old diamondback that my uncle had swapped a 14-34 on. When I went out to Colorado and rode last November. It climbed surprisingly well. I think most of these Walmart bikes come with a 12-28 or a 12-32.
KevCentral Also this bike is actually amazing! For a kid getting riding is hard when you can’t really get money for better bikes. That’s why Walmart is amazing. They have a lot of trash bikes, but like a junkyard, every once in a while something pops up that’s awesome.
Mike R I do but I don’t need it! The Zander is the exact same as a diamondback overdrive st. And that was the bike Seth recommended as a beginner bike.
I just started in the mountain bike game I'm coming from a flatland bmx back ground and I bought this bike hoping to get some good times and I'm waiting to see the upgrades you do to coping some
I’m excited, I realize this is an older video but, I just received my hyper hydroform in the mail on Friday!! Thanks for the inspiration and information
Excellent review, but this frame is far more than people realize. The chainstay is shorter and pretty unique with modern geometry. This frame alone is worth the money as stated on one of the forums. This very well could be the best deal in all of cycling on the frame alone. This build could very well rival bikes far more expensive for dirt cheap in the mountain bike world. There was also a suggestion on the same forum that this frame weighs less than the xr pro which would put this frame in a category with FAR more expensive bikes. The suspense has started because if this bikes performance when modded is as they say it is then it WILL shock the mountain bike world. Cant wait.
You should make a project out of the redline zander. For under $1000 you could have a Rockshox recon silver+ Deore XT drivetrain+ Shimano hydraulic disc brakes
I am looking at fork choices now. Thanks for the info on the Rock show. I plan on using a complete Deore XT drive train. Deore was/is still the best IMO
Swingarm disassembly? I'm curious what the swingarm bushings look like. IMO, that would be the very first thing to fail on the frame and cause slop/rattling/creaking.
Just bought my hydro for $100 (was missing the saddle and kick stand so Walmart manager offered me a $99 discount). I’ll be following this project closely...
The frame is super nice, looks just like their pro downhill bike frame. I’d put a DNM coil on the back, I have one, super nice. Maybe also try a 1X8 or 1X9 with one of those oversized cassettes Been here since 1.5K, love these vids, keep it up 🔥
The king was the Redline Zander. This is no Zander, even with rear suspension. SR Suntour fork, Tektro Aries brakes, quick release front and rear wheels, xct crank. I don't think wally world will ever top the Zander.
Man I admire your will to keep reviewing these big box store bikes. I get it, not everyone wants to or has the means to spend 7k on a new mountain bike every other year but I can see myself snapping every single one of these bikes in half on the first trail ride. It just kind of bums me out that someone who may be genuinely interested in mountain biking has such lousy choices. Forget about the weight, it's the components that are killing these bikes. Those "Tourney" derailleurs can make a trail ride very unpleasant on rocky or chattery terrain, a 3 by 7 drivetrain gives you no chance to climb a long steep hill, your supposed to ride the up the hill not push the bike up it. I can go on for days but I won't. Your doing an amazing job helping people make an informed decision on a shoestring budget bicycle purchase.
Turn this bike into a nice full suspension mountain bike make it a xc trail bike with 120mm of travel front and 100 rear or something like that and get some dubble walled rims from Alex rims or shimano like there 100$ rims no more ya see ya soon
I wish i had seen this video before i bought a $360 turbo hardtail bike as my first bike, and this taking account that i ride black line trails with it 🤣🤣
I have a question that you may be able to answer do you have issues with the gears/ chain sometimes when I shift the start peddling I hear a lot of clicking I downshift then it fixes it or I’ll be riding and it’ll just click and seem like the chain/ gears are slipping any help?
Hi I have built 2 Hyper Hydro's 27.5 and a 29 and still upgrading past your last video . I'm adding a taper fork and a 2 degree offset slacker headset . Do you happen to have the shop geometry, schematic, dimension, frame drawing . My concern is if the straight steering tube machining is deep enough to press the new EC44 external cups. They need upwards of 12mm of insertion. Just picked up 2 mid drive 29's for a fun next project. I really like your channel and Hyper for budget builds.
I can’t and never will be a big box bike person but apparently there are a good number of them. You provide a nice service for them and I enjoy your videos. Perhaps you could do some videos for guys that are willing to spend a few more bucks and get a proper beginner bike.
Mike R whats a proper beginner bike. I see you comment and reply on a few postings on this video. And most are negative. If you want a proper bike, light, with a proper group set, your looking starting over $2k easily for something like that. I have a range of bikes that come start from $50 used in a garage sale to a $4k Santa Cruz. You get what you pay for sure but I also purchased the Zander for kicks and that bike has outperformed my Marlin 7. A few upgrades made and smart choices on components makes my Marlin inferior for a far lesser price way better components on my Zander. Will I ever take it to whistler, hell no but I also would take a XC bike to park enduro or hard downhills. Also many can’t afford high end bikes. I’m fortunate to be able to. I’m no bike snob, and can respect people wanting to ride and get out. People looking into this bike are looking to either maybe upgrade a few components. And be satisfied with it. People that enjoy riding that much know how to wrench and properly setup a bike will take this bike and purchase just for the frame. One has to keep that in mind. It how you look at it. You enjoy creating your own bike, or follow the path of well know LBS shops that will sell you a quality bike with solid frame with crappy components or great components with crappy frame. Just my opinion.
Rafael Leyva thanks for that thoughtful response and since you asked I would say anything you buy at Walmart should not be chosen as a serious mountain bike. There is no reason why someone could not get a job or a second job and do what is necessary to buy a decent starter bike. That is my opinion. Maybe I am a little harsh sometimes but my opinion is valid.
your opinion is valid, but you are not the only one with one here. I too have all kinds of bikes both past and present - Jamis, Schwinn (Pre-1986 along with 2016 and now a 2018) Specialized, Giant - Fuji - again pre-1986 and a recently retired 2016, Nashiki - I believe it was a 1986 model - fastest bike I have ever owned - my first adult bike was a Ross 10 speed gloss black and let me tell you that was a Bike that took notice and people respected in Upstate NY. Here is MY opinion - Kev does an amazing job of doing bicycles at all levels of affordability, performance and style. Being too cool for a Walmart bike is understandable but coming here and simply telling the world how terrible big box bikes are and that you would never own one - doesn't really matter to anyone but you. I am happy that you feel that you can tell all about the circumstances of other people and how if they were not lazy slobs and went out and donated blood and semen and maybe mowed the lawn for the little old lady down the street they could afford something proper - You know what - screw putting my kids through college and that arm surgery my girl needs and forget well visits for the animals and hey everyone loves Ramen... proper bike i will be there to finally have you so soon... Sarcasm aside I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from a man so much more intelligent than I will ever be... "Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truths than lies." - Nietzsche - And so my point does not get misinterpreted, what I am saying is if you stick to your beliefs only and don't accept that things can and do change, you will be the one no longer having an opinion that has any validity. Hope I didn't come off sounding like too much of a dick - been a long day and I am not trying to knuckle up on you.
Jeff Brown holy crap that was a lot of whining! You have no idea who I am and how I got to be where I am. And if a little hard work prevents you from getting a good bike then that’s on you! Keep telling yourself that cheap Walmart bikes are great, it’s just a sign of the times unfortunately 😞
I'd like to see a review on the hyper explorer if possible. Seems like a nice 27.5 full suspension very similar to the hydroform almost a smaller version
Walmart needs to pay you a little advertising because I bought the XR pro and the carbon x and now I’m buying this one right after I comment this 🤷🏽♂️
Mtb Boi yes I love the way it looks I change the rims and tires I put 27.5 rims and continental tires but it’s not good on trials cause you feel every bump since it’s a hard tail..I ride it around the neighborhood and lite tail only
Slick looking bike. I'm curious to see more about it in future videos. Imagine if WalMart really amped up their bike department and staffed it with somebody competent......
The only thing what comes to my mind when i think projecting that bike is that it would be fun to make it balls to the wall. It would have highend parts. It would be interesting to see how good you can make it :)
Once upgraded what category would you put this bike in with its geometry and longer rear travel. Can’t wait to see this build and comparison with the XR Pro
Bikes in Walmart stores are getting better and better
those clutchless derailleurs will always be terrible though
Still doesn’t make them good.
"And other jokes you can tell yourself"
so are the ones in the bike shops
That Carbon X One looks dope af

I really enjoy your videos! Of all the stuff I watch I never fast forward thru any of your videos! Keep up the awesome videos
I’m excited, I realize this is an older video but, I just received my hyper hydroform in the mail on Friday!! Thanks for the inspiration and information
Where did you order from? Walmart is out of stock
Jck Dnls
Just keep checking the site every few days, when I went to order at first they were out of stock.
Yes! Another project bike! Looking forward to it!
This bike has a lot of upgrade Potential. Please Upgrade it!
Keep Up the good work Kev!
Cant wait.
Thiosemicarbizide Benzoyl Alcohol not going to hold my breath.
I'm going to get one and paint it a purple haze color . . .
This bike is shockingly attractive. Geometry looks more slack than the XR-Pro or any Wal-Mart bike for that matter. Very impressive for $200
Would love to see some Redline Zander upgrades. Love mine, added RockBro pedals and grips.
Those lock ons can be had for as little as $3 on Wish. I just ordered 15 pairs.
Upgrades coming
Thanks for the great video. I bought a hydroform thanks to this, now I can build as I go.
I like the frame it seems very upgradeable. I will definitely look into purchasing one.
Thank you I was really hoping that you'd do this cause I bought one myself and before spending 300$ I wanted to see if you'd do it. Thank you so much
You should make a project out of the redline zander. For under $1000 you could have a Rockshox recon silver+ Deore XT drivetrain+ Shimano hydraulic disc brakes
What about the rear shock?
I am looking at fork choices now. Thanks for the info on the Rock show. I plan on using a complete Deore XT drive train. Deore was/is still the best IMO
@@MichaelRei99 it's a hardtail
Guns and mopeds oh thought this vid was about full sus
Your channel is growing so fast, that’s crazy
Swingarm disassembly? I'm curious what the swingarm bushings look like. IMO, that would be the very first thing to fail on the frame and cause slop/rattling/creaking.
Just bought my hydro for $100 (was missing the saddle and kick stand so Walmart manager offered me a $99 discount). I’ll be following this project closely...
The frame is super nice, looks just like their pro downhill bike frame. I’d put a DNM coil on the back, I have one, super nice. Maybe also try a 1X8 or 1X9 with one of those oversized cassettes
Been here since 1.5K, love these vids, keep it up 🔥
For anyone, road or mtn bike, First look what you can find used, if nothing, these cheaper bikes are an amazing deal to get going
The king was the Redline Zander. This is no Zander, even with rear suspension. SR Suntour fork, Tektro Aries brakes, quick release front and rear wheels, xct crank. I don't think wally world will ever top the Zander.
Hopefully they will, but yes. That bike was a great deal.
I wish i had seen this video before i bought a $360 turbo hardtail bike as my first bike, and this taking account that i ride black line trails with it 🤣🤣
Cant wait wat you make of this bike man.
Greets From Holland
I want to see this thing with upgraded parts
I have a question that you may be able to answer do you have issues with the gears/ chain sometimes when I shift the start peddling I hear a lot of clicking I downshift then it fixes it or I’ll be riding and it’ll just click and seem like the chain/ gears are slipping any help?
Sounds like you need to have the derailleur adjusted
Hi I have built 2 Hyper Hydro's 27.5 and a 29 and still upgrading past your last video . I'm adding a taper fork and a 2 degree offset slacker headset . Do you happen to have the shop geometry, schematic, dimension, frame drawing . My concern is if the straight steering tube machining is deep enough to press the new EC44 external cups. They need upwards of 12mm of insertion. Just picked up 2 mid drive 29's for a fun next project. I really like your channel and Hyper for budget builds.
I might go pick one of these up. Looks verrrry good for that price.
Not bad at all for $199 jewels of Wal-Mart Thanks Kevc.
Thank you so much for the insightful videos this is more knowledge for my toolbox 👍
I bought a appollo grandiant mountain bike I put shimano mechanical disc on it mudguards motorcycle lock had it two years never broken down
I can’t and never will be a big box bike person but apparently there are a good number of them.
Sarcasm aside I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from a man so much more intelligent
than I will ever be...
As long as the frame is good and the components are upgradeable. I know everyone says doing that is a money pit, but I like projects.
Please review the cross fxt 700 from argos I want to get one and I can't see many reviews on them thanks 👊
Walmart needs to pay you a little advertising because I bought the XR pro and the carbon x and now I’m buying this one right after I comment this 🤷🏽♂️
😂 thanks for being part of the channel
Do you like the carbon x
Mtb Boi yes I love the way it looks I change the rims and tires I put 27.5 rims and continental tires but it’s not good on trials cause you feel every bump since it’s a hard tail..I ride it around the neighborhood and lite tail only
My upgraded Carbon X - love it!
KevCentral do you know if the DNM rear shox on your XR pro would fit this hyper bike rear spring???
You should try upgrading the Schwinn Protocol 2.7! I did, and I love it!
Slick looking bike. I'm curious to see more about it in future videos. Imagine if WalMart really amped up their bike department and staffed it with somebody competent......
Warren Linke if they did that they wouldn’t be selling $199 bikes.
That’s absolutely worth the price $200 is insane Awesome price For the bicycle it being aluminum
That's a nice looking bike. Can't wait to see the upgraded version.
Just bought this bike because of your videos
Frontier Justice for shocks decent set of paddles in double-walled rims maybe 27 and a half inch truck rims
Should i buy the schwinn aluminum comp or the hyper hydroform except with 27.5 inch wheels
I was waiting for you to do a vid in this and I bought one and put carbon rims and new front suspension and tires and bars it’s like a pro MTB
Jacob James do you know how to use a comma?
@@swedishdagger8410 commas??? Try periods!!! Lol
Could you do a upgrade series on this please
Coming in the near future
@@KevCentral Thanks you
"Discreet reflector." lol Thanks for showing us that we don't have to spend upward of a grand to enjoy some singletrack.
The only thing what comes to my mind when i think projecting that bike is that it would be fun to make it balls to the wall. It would have highend parts. It would be interesting to see how good you can make it :)
Last time I was this early he was still reviewing the hyper shocker
Hey kev, what do think about schwinn aluminium comp compared to hyper hydrofoam. Is one better then other?
I have a hyper aluminum explorer,it has some components that are the same on yours
Sometimes I can't keep up with the rate of videos! Keep it coming!
Once upgraded what category would you put this bike in with its geometry and longer rear travel. Can’t wait to see this build and comparison with the XR Pro
You should upgrade it
Can you review the Northwood Pomona that is the most sold Amazon bike? And it’s sold on Walmart making it one of the most sold.
good bike, interesting how long susspensions not brake... and weight is little to hight.
This was just priced at $154 today!! Clearance! I ended up returning and getting another one.
Hey Kev! Another great video. By any chance do you know the seat post size on this bike? I can’t seem to find this info anywhere. Thanks!
Jeez, I did not expect a snafu seat. I didn't even know that they made railed seats.
