- The Lincoln Street Ventilation Stack can be found in the suburb of Highgate, close to the Perth CBD. Constructed in 1941 under the guidance of Russell Dumas, the stack was a failed experiment to exert acidic gas from the sewer network. All the equipment quickly corroded and it was known to stink out the local neighbourhood. It was sealed off after only four weeks of operation but gained a second life by concealing a secret antenna used by the police department and the Commonwealth Department of Defence during World War 2.

I’m glad to find this channel Brendan.
Years ago, working in the railways and refurbishing an old government building in Wellington Street (which is still there and I believe, heritage listed, being 605 Wellington) we found, beneath the floorboards in a “basement” a plugged artesian bore, believed to be a part of Perths early water supply. The redevelopment left this alone, and as memory serves, there was no visible or obvious way into this location.
As a young teen I had the opportunity to occupy a spare rear seat in the 6PR morning show traffic report chopper. In the front seat was obviously the pilot and to his left was radio personality, Des Austin. The station would regularly cut to Des for the morning traffic updates.The seat next to me was always occupied by a police officer who was always holding and talking on a VHF hand held police radio. I remember on one particular flight, we flew over this so called ventalation shaft/tower realy low and the copper in the chopper told me that the police had all there latest hi tech gear stashed in that tower and if it was ever destroyed the entire police comunications whould be whiped out and how vuneable it was to attack and hence the reason for regular fly overs. I remember it being not very far from Mount Lawley TAFE collage.
I went and checked this out for myself last week! You’re inspiring me to go and check out more places around perth for myself :)

I never thought I’d be a sewer enthusiast but here we are, also there’s another pole like the one in Hyde Park on the corner of Thomas St and Cook St in West Perth. I always wondered what it was for.

I'm very glad to have found a channel of this sort which is specific to Perth and W.A. (and even Boyup Brook, where I was born...)
The 'hill' it was constructed on is barely a rise, but yeah, it's a prominent landmark you could see from the old footy ground, Walcott Street and parts of Northbridge.
I work part of the year at Tallison's so the abandoned rail line at BB is on my list.
BB's museums are pretty good. The Freemason's Hall more great architecture.
I grew up in Mount Lawley, so am really appreciating your insights into the mysteries of the surrounding areas. I rode everywhere as a youth, and those curtained windows at the foot of the tower were just another place i desperately wanted to see behind. I do hope you can film a tour - and even climb inside the tower.

For my first 20 years in Perth I wondered what it was. Some locals called it a Cenotaph. Pre-internet days I researched in the library, finding out far less than you.
A friend of a friend testified in a trial over an episode of graphic 90's violence in Northbridge and was then on a gang's hit list. He could never get a lease in his name and had a silent number. Then one day the police came a-knocking at his Smith Street apartment, telling him to move, sharpish.
Apparently Ferret, street hustling, drug-addled ne'er-do-well, saw him and sped to the baddie's hangout in Leederville. Sold the info to the wanna-be ganstas, and playing both sides of the fence, also told the cops. Ferret reported "_______ is livin' in Highgate, near that war memorial thingee". Cops arrived and warned ______ to vacate, quickly.
That war memorial thingee is a prominent and useful landmark. And a nice example of between war architecture.
I drive past so many of the things in your videos every day without noticing them. It's been really cool having those little pieces of old infrastructure pointed out so i can admire them in person.
Thanks for sharing some of the history. I knew it was constructed as a sewer vent but didn't realise that its service life was so short!

Love your videos, you should check out the abandoned dunreath drive road below the main perth airport runway. It has a section of road abandoned in 1981 before tonkin highway was built, and another abandoned in 2015.

you should find white horse trail, 16y ago there was still bits of ww2 stuff there, also yanship inn, that has conflicting stories and i cannot dig up the truth on the lake or the inn. lakes dry sad to say water rats are endangered again, that lake was there and not swamp as the ranger will tell you, yes it was dredged to make it deeper but was never like it is now as clammed also the bs the last it was full was 2003 as i have photos 2006 and it was full, little bird told me that new train line they had to pump out and lower the water table 4 years ago, between development there and that now there is no lake, yet last 2022 wa government said to Sydney press it was going to fix and put 60% of water back in in 2023, but it will never be as it was. government did not do that its dry for 90% some mud and small puddle. was there recently to see dead roo's in the mud. its a disaster and environmental catastrophe via UWA

I bought a old 80's Honda & spent afew school holidays driving it & tge kids around Perth exploring. We spotted this tower & drove over & checked it out, was interesting seeing the armoured car at the nearby Police museum building. Also not far away is a big old steamtrain at the Mt Lawley station.
And I thought it was a Anzac monument 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s eventually also used as a 5G tower before of it’s hight and hilltop location which would be extremely ideal geography conditions for a phone tower! :)

Growing up in my Lawley, I always knew that it was a police radio tower, and also passed you on my way to Perth Oval. My family also had a property in Mundaring and on our journey back down Greenmount Hill it would be clearly visible, this I add was the mid too late 60s.
I know this area very well. I’d love for you to do a deep dive on Perth Oval. I still find the streets nearby lined with the Morton Bay Fig Trees incredibly seedy (so to speak lol). A definite dodgy vibe around there still.
Remember that thing from when I was a kid living in Mt Lawley - never wondered what it was, actually.
There's also another similar vent to the one in Hyde Park in East Perth on Royal St on the West side of the Education Dept building.

Interesting. I always heard it was for police training. So cool that rumor was confirmed. The other rumor was that it had access to secret tunnels. I’d be curious if there was any truth to that. Obviously it’s connected to the sewer system but if it was part of a secret military operation not outside the realm of possibility. Enjoying the videos m8

On the way to the footy in about 1959 I asked Dad what it was. He told me it was "a monument to poo" 😅
Interesting and it would be great for a video of the tower inside. I also managed to get permission to climb the Perth Town Hall up to the top. It opens up to a small platform for the flag mast. Thats another fascinating location to video if you have the time.

A great video (more so a few years ago) would've been on the Red Castle Hotel in Lathlain (Vic Park).

About a year ago I was driving in the area to run some errands. While trying to find my way back home (very far away), I saw this tower and immediately stopped to try to find out what it was. An hour of photo taking, online searching and rabbitholes about ventilation stacks followed. 😂
I’ve just found your videos and wow! They’re incredibly interesting, and I’m so impressed by the lengths you go to in your research. As a future video suggestion- about 15 minutes south of Geraldton there is a large bright blue abandoned hotel(?) in the middle of the bush that I stumbled upon while hiking near the greenough river. I’m so curious to know the history of this building and why it was abandoned! Whether you explore it one day or not, keep up the great work!
I always loved the look of this structure (and other similar classic tall things like the Ascot kilns). Never knew that it hasn't had sewerage connection for decades!
They should really do something with this space; put up a plaque, make a small green space with benches etc. It’s such a point of visual interest and it seems odd for the city to kinda of ignore it.

Also if you're looking for ideas, there are rumoured to be tunnels under King's Park.
Tunnels under Rottnest Island. Went through them In the late 70s on a school trip . Came out through the big gun in the middle of the island ..wouldn't fit through now tho 😅
I doubt I could find the tunnels myself since the rumours have been floating around for decades, but I'm sure the rumour itself could make an interesting video

I've been trying to locate the upper swan airfield (just using google earth) and an approximate (hand drawn) map from around ww2, i haven't been able to find a location as of yet
The Caversham airfield was also a part of the racetrack for the Australian GP in 1956 and 1962. Part of it was earmarked for residential development in 2018. Mabe contact the WA Vintage Sports Car Club, from the article i read they seem to know of its location. I think it would be a good one for @brendansodyssey to make a video on.

That's an easy one -31.837868, 115.971731 . To the east is the N/S strip which was used as the main straight for the racetrack.
In there is/was also a radio club.
