Atlantis Marine Park - What Remains?
Opening in Two Rocks on Boxing Day 1981, the Atlantis Marine Park was a unique theme park for Perth including all sorts of performing sea life, primarily dolphins. This story goes deeper, however, involving Alan Bond's Yanchep Sun City and the prime times of the 80s, followed by the downturn of the 90s. Even though it was mostly demolished in the early 90s, there are still remains 30 years later. Let's hope in the Kia and find out what remains!

Burswood was once an island?
มุมมอง 21K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Before Burswood was a peninsula, it was an island. And before it was an island... it was a peninsula. I always wondered why Burswood was labelled as an island on old maps. After some research, it turns out it's because of Perth's first-ever infrastructure project: a canal. The Burswood Canal (or "Old Burswood Canal" as it's usually referred to) was constructed in the 1830s to cut off a difficul...

I was lucky enough to be offered a tour of the headquarters and workshops for the Perth Electric Tramway Society in Whiteman Park. The Lincoln Street Ventilation Stack can be found in the suburb of Highgate, close to the Perth CBD. What remains of Perth's tram network?

The Perth tram network ran from 1899 until 1958 and included an expansive system that reached all corners of the metropolitan area. What Remains of the Belmont Railway Spur?

From 1885 to 1956, the Belmont Spur Line, also known as the Belmont Branch and the Perth Racecourse Railway, ran from the Eastern Line in Bayswater, across the Swan River and terminated at the Ascot Racecourse. Today, I follow the abandoned railway line from the town of Mundijong to the bushland behind Jarrahdale. Today we’re near the town of Boyup Brook, hiking out to experience a massive wooden trestle railway bridge that crosses the Blackwood River. Constructed in 1912, the Skeleton Bridge was in service until 1982. The line spurred from the Bunbury-Manjimup line from Donnybrook and ran to Kojonup. The bridge itself has survived bushfires and multiple floods over the years, so it's well worth the shor...

I remember Yanchep Sun CIty being a long way from home (Balga) and cold and mostly deserted (so we likely went in winter). We went to Atlantis in it's hey-day and it was fun - but not surprising that it fell into decline. There was speculation that Bond had named the development "Sun City" after Sun City in South Africa - possibly to attract South African investors or potential home oweners.

Hi Brendan. Thanks so much for making this. I had hoped you might get to Alantis at some point. There is some good 1989 footage here from the 8:10 mark: th-cam.com/video/uDhY48p4BFk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=D8W7ueGelEqnckjQ&t=490 There was a tonne of weird and whacky theme parks north of Perth in the 1980's. The Wanneroo Lion Park (opened in the '70s) was the oddest of all. You drove your car into a fenced off 'park' area filled with lions and threw a slab of meat out the car window that you purchased from the front entrance. My memory of the meat was that it is was a giant slab of rump steak. You could then watch the big cats eat it. I first went there around 1980-81, not long after my family migrated to Western Australia from NZ. There were various rumours and sightings of an escaped lion where I lived at the time in Bullsbrook and there was also a story about someone who killed themselves there by getting out of their car. The lions attacked and ate them.

Hi Brendan. Really enjoy your videos. Can I suggest a vid about Canning Bridge? I don't know much about it (I'm probably not alone in that :)), even though I grew up near it and used to go fishing underneath it (it had/has a kind of jetty thing underneath it, projecting from the Como side of the river). Two things are clear: It's pretty old, and made of wood. So it has to have a cool history, right :) Another potentially interesting historical site is the nearby Heathcote Hospital (now a kind of public park/space), but all the old buildings are still there.

Like all Poms. Bond talked the talk but never walked the walk.

I've driven past this so many times and had no idea about any of this. Pretty dope to learn.
