Hi Mags, It has been a very challenging year for all....but even so, that is still an impressive harvest considering you had blight! Pretty good haul even so! Our earlies (Casablanca) went bonkers and we had huge spuds! Apart from a bit of scab it wasn't too bad and very tasty they are too. We did get blight on the Charlottes, but this is the second poor year with those - the slugs love them. We cut the stems off to prevent any damage, so that helped. Just unearthed the maincrop Java (I think there were 16 or 18 seeds) and ended up with a reasonable crop, considering. Plenty of slug damage - no voles because we have 2 grass snakes now! Very little damage from wire worm on the Casablancas - saw probably 2 in the bed, more in the Charlottes. None in the Javas. Still have Sarpo Mira to do. But all the left over spuds went in tubs in the polytunnel and still green. Not tested one yet! I do spy a Java near the surface (mulched to protect) - the only red variety I grew this year. HRH was bemoaning not many spuds - I said there's more than 18 so it's good enough!
Fingers crossed big time! I think I've got the measure of our weather now, so I'm coming out fighting! I have some mustard seed, so I'll be using that to reduce the wire worm - that's if the slugs don't eat it first! LOL!
Hey Mags, our potatoes in buckets haven’t done great this year, or last year to be honest. Definitely in the ground works for us. Haven’t really touched our main crop at all yet. Still using up first earlies 😂 good job the main crop store well x Allie
Hi Allie. I usually do well with growing in pots. It hasn’t been a dead loss, just worst than usual. I don’t have the bed space to grow them in a bed. Take care. Mags
I would say you had a really good harvest compared to mine. I was harvesting 30ltr buckets and my entire harvest would fit into a coffee mug … now THAT is a bad harvest! In my potatoes defence, I never watered them so that I got anything was a miracle lol. My learning from that was to move my buckets closer to house, and get a longer hose. Then I should have no excuse to not water my tubs, even in the rain. I forgot that heavy foliage can shade out the soil in the pots, so the buckets still need watering. Ah well, maybe next year.
Grew potatoes for the first time this year. I think I got blight or something fungal. However, I did harvest an abundance of nice smaller potatoes and ohhhh my goodness the taste has been unbelievable.

Hi Mags pink fir apple are one of vals favourites so have to make sure i grow them , i think if you hadnt got blght you would of got bigger but they will still taste delicious.
My Pink Fir Apple have always been smaller than that Mags, so well done. No Blight here touch wood.

These are normally about the size you got. Just harvest our late ones for Christmas and they are very poor.
