Always look forward to your ELO reactions! Never disappointed! 😁 Btw, the violin player is Mik Kaminski. He joined the band in '73, for ELO's third album "On the Third Day", and continued recording, and or touring with Jeff, for over a decade! 💕

I've LOVED the Electric Light Orchesta since the 1970's and was so glad to see a fellow Dimash Dear appreciate what they produced. Like Dimash they were very creative and ahead of their time. And I predict you will also LOVE the Mamas and the Papas when you get around to reacting to them. I would start out with "California Dreamin'" but also highly recommend "Twelve Thirty" and "I Saw Her Again."

Hi HarriBest. Enjoying your Channel. Lifelong ELO/Jeff Fan here from Germany. As for a live version of an ELO song I would recommend the Wembley Concert from 2017 which has probably the best sound quality because it was released on BluRay titled Wembley or Bust. I'm almost a bit envious of you 'cos you're discovering and hearing these tunes for the 1st time. Also, I'd recommend to check out ELO's deep album cuts like Shangri-La, Tightrope, Waterfall, Eldorado etc. as well. Tig
    Cheers!

I was going to suggest the Wembley concert also. You can truly understand why they are the Electric. Light. Orchestra. Jeff Is an amazing performer. After that I would recommend watching the ELO induction to Hall of Fame performance and Jeff’s participation in the George Harrison induction ceremony performing While my Guitar Gently Weeps with all the other greatness on that stage. I’ve been a fan since a peer brought her brothers ELO album to show and tell in fourth grade. I finally saw them live on tour a few years ago. I was brought to tears a few times at finally experiencing this music live after I had decided I never would have the opportunity.

    Have you done Rockaria yet?
I have connections with this band. My daughter had Kelly Grocutt's son as her tutor at music college, and the drummer is a fairly regular visitor to my mate's bar here in Stourport, in the UK midlands. Jeff Lynne is phenomenally talented in just about every aspect of his music. I've worked with a lot of good musicians and a couple of great ones. But the way he writes is next level.
Most mortals write from a starting point... A lyric, or a chord progression, and they build the song from there. I'm told that he writes really fast, because when a song comes to him, he hears the entire arrangement straight off the bat.
    If that's true, it's incredible.

There are a lot of great live videos from the last several years, but maybe a good start would be "Telephone Line" live from Wembley Stadium. He has a great band (pre-covid) and he said that "if it wasn't his band, he'd never be good enough to be in it". But he's humble that way.

Absolutely, they used cellos and violins in their music.... even a french horn on occasion. ELO's third album, Face the Music had more orchestral and instrumental on it. Including Fire on High that was used by Wide World of Sports as the intro for years. Popular hits on this album were Evil Woman and Strange Magic. Anyway, ELO's older stuff does sound different than what you've heard so far.

"Lead me like a lamb to slaughter" in the concept of ELO is more like "Lead me like a lamb to the heavens." At least for me it has been for 45 years.

The ELO, "Out Of The Blue" tour, was simply phenomenal.
Perfect as perfect as a concert can be.
That was the "UFO" tour with the huge alien ship staging.
When rising and opened, the band appeared within it playing directly under the ceiling of the banks upon banks of lighting/ laser rigs. One of coolest stage set ups I have ever seen.
When closed, just sitting there before the show, it looked like a cross between a UFO and a HUGE McDonald's "Big Mac".
As a stoned, 21 year old, I didn't know whether to jump up on the stage and admire it in all its glory, or take a GIGANTIC bite out of it.
I'm still picking out metal from my teeth and gums.

Their previous album A New World Record to me is even stronger than this double album. Livin' Thing came from that one. Please listen to that album.
I just noticed why I got hooked on reactionvideos. It forces me to listen with so much more attention to songs I have known for decades, that I really am hearing things I have overlooked all this time. I just recognised Jeff singing along in a low voice, pretty forward in the mix as well.
Can't get it out of my head was their single from 'Eldorado'. Another album on which each track is as strong as the other! My desert island record...
The first years there was a string section in the band, Roy Wood playing cello, Mik Kaminski playing violin, Hugh McDowell playing cello, Melvyn Gale, playing cello. It was with the album Discovery Jeff decided to get rid of the strings and 'modernise' towards a more electronic sound. 4 members remained: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitars), Kelly Groucutt (bass), Richard Tandy (keyboards) Bev Bevan (drums).

Your comment seems to imply a direct influence, from working with the Beatles, on ELO music. However, as most ELO music obviously predates that work (he did Cloud 9 with Harrison in 87, and Travelling Wilburys were formed just after that, his work with Paul was after the then surviving Beatles had asked him to help finish Free As A Bird and Real Love in 94, this is well after Jeff suspended ELO after Balance of Power in 1986), that is clearly not possible, the idea just doesn't make sense. Jeff _was_ (and is) a big fan however, and I think he did meet them when visiting the Abbey Road studios in 1968, when they were recording the White Album. At the time, Jeff was in his band The Idle Race, which was being praised by critics, but did not get any large commercial successes.

    • @curtgray3486

I grew up on the ELO album named Time from 81. That is an unique album and rather different from their other albums. It is packed with great songs. If I should recommend just a few I could mention "Ticket to the moon", "That's the way life's meant to be", "Another heart breaks". But it's difficult just to pick a few from that album because it's just so good all the way through. But I will say that my ultimate favorite ELO track is Sweet talking woman. I love the whole Out of the blue album, but it took a bit longer for me to discover that album. Telephone line is also just so beautiful. They could just as well have named most of their albums Greatest hits because they really were not very good at creating weak songs.

With few exceptions I think a 1st time experience should be the studio recording, as that is likely to be how most of us heard the song for the 1st time. Also, Bluebird is an ELO song from Secret Messages album.... good tune!

Sweet Talkin’ Woman is from the same album as Mr. Blue Sky, Out Of The Blue. Two other songs you reacted to, Livin’ Thing and Telephone Line are from the previous album, New World Record.
Looks like you might review another big hit Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. His voice is very much like John Lennon’s in it. Please review the live version of Eldorado Overture/Can’t Get It Out Of My Head combo available on TH-cam.
The band started with a few string players that were overdubbed to create a raw “orchestra sound”. That was dropped for a true full orchestra in 1974 which developed the “classic ELO sound”. For the most part, the string player band members were then used for live performances.

Watch them live - violins & cellos xx
I used to love watching them on TOTP. The guy used to play a blue violin, which as a young child, I thought was really cool!

Harri - Okay, my friend. Time's up!! :) Now you've got to react to "Turn To Stone," by ELO. MY personal favorite should also be YOURS. Have a great day, new friend.

Loads of great stuff to listen to by ELO. John Lennon once said he thought the Beatles might have sounded like that if they stayed together. Good compliment. Geoff Lynn the lead of ELO played with George Harrison in the Travelling Wilburys. He was certainly influenced by the Beatles.

If you want to listen to Mama's & Papa's, I suggest Creeque Alley. It's autobiographical and talks about other southern California performers like John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful.

Good old memories. Disco beat in the chorus, which was common at the time. Speaking of McCartney, Billy Joel has a similar style.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: you should check out Münchener Freiheit (or just ‘Freiheit’ for international purposes), especially “Keeping The Dream Alive”, but also “Play It Cool”. Very ELO-like.

Mamas & Papas, California Dreamin (although you probably know it!)
All the strings were done in the studio with multitracking, so when Jeff Lynne got to take the band out properly live, it was the first time even he was hearing it properly live with orchestra.

The next 3 must hear ELO songs to add to your playlist should be: (1) Tightrope; (2) Can't Get It Out Of My Head; & (3) Eldorado. You won't be disappointed :)

Lennon called them "sons of Beatles" so he definitely heard it in them. I think I mentioned before when I saw them in very late December 1980, which was just weeks after John was shot. They did a Beatles tribute which was perfect and made me cry. My 19th birthday was 4th December 1980 so, you know, I spent most of December weeping. My birthday is just interlinked in my soul with the events of the 8th. ELO live are superb; better than the albums.
Ticket to the Moon is great as is Wild West Hero, Showdown, Can't Get it out of My head is cool also.
Harri you can't go wrong no matter which song you choose.
Happy Sunday greetings to The Best Fam.

Good job, Harri. You have done yourself a great service by going down the ELO "rabbit hole"..... and I am so glad you have. The Live at Wembley concert is outstanding. I've mentioned other ELO songs to you but I've changed my mind after recently re-listening to Tightrope. Check it out on the 2001 live ELO comeback tour. Outstanding song.

If you want to truly appreciate ELO, go beyond the songs that are frequently played on the radio. Checkout Tightrope, Standing in the Rain, Big Wheels, Across the Border, Shangri-La, or Prologue/Twilight. For a live performance, anything from their recent Live at Wembley show is great.

In ELO and The Beatles you've regularly covered two members of The Travelling Wilburys, you need to check out that band and the solo works of its three other members who are all absolute legends in their own rights.
