I don't know a lot about footbal, but even I could see that the slow play began at the back - Stones, Trippier, Walker - sideways, back, sideways, back. None of them wanted to pass it forward. That has been coached into them at national level - it must have been. I don't think Pep would be happy if they did that every Saturday. Rather than make an incisive pass forward, their instinct is always to go back, and that totally destroys any momentum.
They don't pass it forward because they have limited options showing to pass to. You watch Rice when his defenders have the ball. He follows and hides behind the opposition 9 or 10, closing off his space and ability to receive as an option. Then the defenders just pass it up to the wingers who are too deep when they receive it and never in a position to take the ball forward. Get a 6 in there who will show and demand the ball and things will speed up, and so will opportunities to move the ball forward.

Coming close to beating Germany in the last group game and having an easy time with Italy. They look now the same as they did in their first game. Switzerland is better than those teams by quite a bit. I always try and support him purely because criticising in the middle of a tournament is pointless but tonight was awful. I don't understand why he can't see how problematic that left hand side is. Almost feels like he's being stubborn at this point because the fans want Gordon in. Football fans talk garbage 99% of the time but for once the masses are probably right. Not having a proper left back and experimenting with Trent in the tournament were also absolute clangers. Also, what was the point of Toney coming on for a couple of minutes? Subs in injury time are usually made to wind down the clock, not to make a difference.

That has been coached into them at national level - it must have been. I don't think Pep would be happy if they did that every Saturday. Rather than make an incisive pass forward, their instinct is always to go back, and that totally destroys any momentum.

They don't pass it forward because they have limited options showing to pass to. You watch Rice when his defenders have the ball. He follows and hides behind the opposition 9 or 10, closing off his space and ability to receive as an option. Then the defenders just pass it up to the wingers who are too deep when they receive it and never in a position to take the ball forward. Get a 6 in there who will show and demand the ball and things will speed up, and so will opportunities to move the ball forward.

@David-cm4ok Switzerland hasn't had the fastest start of the tournament, but they imporved and got better during the games. Coming close to beating Germany in the last group game and having an easy time with Italy. Yes they had a draw against Scotland, but England had a draw against Denmark, Slovenia and went into overtime against Slovakia. England hasn't improved during any of those games. They look now the same as they did in their first game. Switzerland is better than those teams by quite a bit. Unless England miraculously play good in the next game I don't see them beating Switzerland.

Foden 0/10.. Why on earth is this guy so overhyped by English fans and media alike?! He's played 300+ mins of football and done absolutely nothing! He isn't responsible for England having good players, the league, the clubs and the club managers are! The simple reason England aren't clicking is because of shape and tactics. If you look and ask why aren't rice, Bellingham, foden etc clicking is simple, it's called a world class 6! None of them are 6's including rice. Foden has rodri, Bellingham has kroos and more, rice has partey. This allows them to go forward with purpose and speed. Factor in how little movement there is ahead of them(Kane looks knackered) no movement whatsoever! This is why we aren't fluid. Rice, Bellingham and Kane, were awful for 90mins yesterday, that's the spine of the attack. Southgate has to be brave and play our only 6 and drop stars or change the shape to 3,5,2. Not my favourite formation but that's how you get balance.
