Here is a brief translation of the video. I have only started learning Japanese and still make lots of mistakes, so please let me know if you find any error or emission :)
[0:00] Hello everyone, this is Matsusue from Bonsai Suishoen. Today we will talk about Hinoki cypress("seka hinoki"石化檜). Exactly where do I make the cut? Which branch should I work on? We will try to answer questions such as these. And as always thank you very much for your support.
[0:16] Now we start our discussion. Hinoki cypress has foliage that looks like this. [Lift and reveals the belly of a small branch.] Like this extend branch ("tochoume"徒長芽) here, which has elongated a bit too much. At the first look, there are green leaves everywhere, and it is a bit hard to tell what's going on. But there are actually buds deep down here. Can you see them? Hope you can see the new buds there. [Points with metal tool.] Like these here.
[1:04] Basically, beside the yellow-green growing tip a the end, there are actively growing tips in the middle as well. If we trim at these places, new buds will form at the cut in the future. So we take a pair of scissors, and ... hope this is not too confusing... just cut here. [cut!] Like this. After a cut like this, new bud will form and extend from here, from this green part where we have left behind. Please be careful not to take off the tips here. Things should be fine if we just trim like this.
[2:02] We don't mean it is absolutely necessarily to leave behind the very young growing tips, as long as there is some green left behind, a bud will be there. It should be fine just to cut back at that point.
[2:30] It has been getting warmer recently. And when it is warm out there, new growths form "dong-dong-dong-" in a swarm. If we place the tree under direct sunlight now, the leaves will open up completely and become [...?...]. Therefore it is better to not drastically prune or trim back. If we notice something that is really extending too far and started to bother us, then we push them back a little bit. A thorough and systematic trimming needs to wait till autumn, when the weather start cooling down.
[3:21] This time we briefly showed where to make on a Hinoki cypress. Hinoki cypresses might get injured if not placed in the shade after trimming in hot days like this. Please be careful with them. Timing such as late July, when the raining season (in Japan) is drawing to an end, and especially in the August when the sun is really strong. That is all for today's video. Thank you very much for your attention.
