ふためを基本になかに追い込んでく感じなんですね。古葉をとってしまうと間延びしてしまうと思っていましたが
逆に取ってしまって生長点を残すと逆に胴吹きするんですね。

thank you for the video. The final product has much less foliage. Will this fill in over the following years? What type of care is required afterwards?

The foliage fills in again during the next summer and the next two years. The tree will shoot back (further in) on the branches, when cut like shown here, and the branches will not grow long, weak and lankey. It cultivates the tree. Also, a bonsai should show the trunk and branches and not have to thick foliage. With too thick foliage it becomes a bush and not a classic bonsai.

Additional care is to maintain the shape, by pruning and cutting the tree back in the fall. This will not harm the tree. The sap seals the cuts. Remember to always use sharp, clean scissors when cutting back the tree, to keep it healthy. Also, you can wire branches to shape them. Don't forget to use fertilizer in the water and never let the tree dry out. Every two or three years you should repot your tree. I recommend watching a video that show how to maintain the roots of the tree and what soil to use, plus tying the tree into the pot, to secure it. Herons bonsai is a good channel for English speakers.

Normally one prunes the bonsai in the fall. September till October is the best time. Not in the spring, because the sap is rising after the winter and the tree will bleed more sap than at other times of the year, and this is not good for the tree. In spring and summer the tree grows, and after the season you prune the tree and let it rest during winter.
