      Thanks for the video. I was surprised that you decided not to mention that Capture one is more expensive than the photographer's package from adobe, even if one buys the single brand version. In 4:07 you put pricing as an advantage of Capture one an I believe that is misleading.

    As a former Aperture, PS, and LR user I searched and finally found an application (Capture 1) that allows me to bring to screen multiple images (12 maximum) side by side, zoom in/out on all/each simultaneously, and give each a color/star rating, all on the same screen. Really helpful in the culling process.

Thankfully I was able to purchase Lightroom 6 and Photoshop CS6 when they were available and now I use Lightroom 6.14 for all my photo editing. I refuse to pay for a monthly subscription to anyone. Since my photo editing needs are very basic, and thanks to your incredible Lightroom 6 tutorials on this channel, you have taught me how to use Lightroom 6 to create beautiful photos I can share with others on Facebook; to help them understand the depth of the requirements for successful Macaw aviculture. I have used Lightroom for 5 years but started using Capture One in December 2020. Whilst I agree with much of your analysis, I would say that the tethering is significantly better in Capture One. I am a Nikon user and have the Nikon specific version of C1. I had no problem using tethering in C1 but never got Lightroom to tether with my Nikon Z7ii. I only ever used the Library and Develop modules in Lightroom so certainly don't miss the other modules in Capture One. You commented that LR has "Texture" in the Develop module but as I understand it that functionality is provided in Capture One with "Structure" - different name similar functionality. Capture One have announced that both HDR merge and Panorama merge will be introduced with the next major release coming later this year. For me the Capture One Layer system is the massive differentiator. It is brilliant and gives so much more flexibility. I also think the masking aspect works so much better than the Lightroom equivalent with much greater control. Capture One is the clear winner for me and I have almost stopped using Lightroom.

    Great video, subbed. Photographer of 30 years here. My gut says to stick with LR so I am. I used it for years and stopped once they did the subscription service. I like how there are so many presets available for LR. I want to focus on my photography and just accent or add spice to the images. LR is good enough for me.

    I've been battling with my XT Fuji files in Lightroom for many months, I tried NUMEROUS tricks I found on YT and even bought special software to convert the RAF files to DNG (Like Iridient X Transformer). And then I started using Capture One... Tada!!!! No more worms or strange artifacts, the colors are more intens and deeper. I heard that for Sony files Capture the color treatment is much better as well. Somehow the information contained in the RAW files is treated better in Capture One.
    For me the adjustments are much more precise and tools more customisable. You need some time to get used to them.
    I LOVE the layers and use them all the time. I actually do less in PS now. Although I have the subscription of Adobe Suite, but I never ever use Lightroom anymore.

    Anthony, at about 22:20 you talk about arranging the order of the various right side tools in LR classic. You say that you can't rearrange them in LR. Oh, contrair: when you go into the "customize develop panel" by right clicking on any of the tools on the right side, you can just drag each tool (such as transform) to be in any order you want by selecting it by left clicking on the item and moving it up or down. At least you can in Windows 10.

    I have been using PS from way back and have had both C1 and PS for a while. I really appreciate the colors I get from C1, it is much faster to get the desired result, and the much faster export speed (I very often use batch processing) are the two main reasons that make me drop PS
    The dedicated camera versions of C1 have no problems with DNG files, so if the very moderate compression is not an issue, Adobe DNG Converter can do the job while answering text messages or making coffee. I got my first C1 for free with Sony A7R2 and occasionally used it with DNG files converted from CR2 Files

    I use Capture One for tethering in my studio. It seems to be the only software that is relentlessly reliable for tethering, and I can't afford a breakdown of tethering when shooting in studio. For editing and organization, I use mostly Lightroom and Photoshop. I used to use Capture One exclusively for RAW conversion, because Lightroom was incredibly bad by comparison, but latest color profiles in Lightroom seem to be competitive.

  • @natashacalzatti

    The biggest difference is Color Editor specifically, Skin Tone uniformity. For those of us who shoot people. As far as tethering on location or studio, nothing like it!

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree! The Capture One Advanced Colour Editor is a phenomenal tool in my opinion. Also, the Luma tab in the Curve tool that protect colours from changing when contrast adjustments are done is fantastic. I also think the Brightness and basic Contrast sliders in C1 are much underrated. They both work much more “intelligently” than in any other software I’m using daily. The same goes for the basic Saturation slider that is trying to increase or decrease the levels of saturation in a balanced way rather than blindly applying changes across the board in equal amounts. After a few updates the Dehaze slider have now become a very useful tool, in my opinion as well.
      On a whole, I find that I’m less in the danger of going over board with too aggressive adjustments with Capture One than with any other software I use really. On top of that I just love the fact that I have a true layer structure with Luminosity masking to work with in Capture One. That makes me not needing a round-trip to a pixel editor (such as Photoshop) as often as I would if I was using Lightroom, for example. With the up-coming additions of Panorama stitch and HDR merge I will have even less need for a pixel editor moving forward. When I do need a pixel editor I use Affinity Photo as my go-to application.
      I like to add that for us that have chosen to have a subscription version of Capture One for a specific camera brand (Nikon in my case) still have the option to also use DNG raw files, if we so choose. Also, both TIF and JPG work fine too in these versions as well.

    I pay $9 /month for my Capture One subscription. 5 years ago I paid $39 for Affinity Photo (Photoshop replacement) and it is still being regularly updated without asking for more money. I reckon that’s a pretty sweet deal too! There’s no need to hang on to Adobe just for the sake of saving a few nickels and dimes! That’s not where the differences between these options lies.

I've been using Lightroom on my iPad Pro 12.9. Adobe's most recent changes to their T & S agreement has convinced me it may be time to finally cancel ALL my Adobe subscriptions and go to Capture Ones All-in-one package for desktop, iPad & iOS. In your opinion and experience, which is best for my Leica Q2 Monochrom files...Capture One or LR and why??

    Good comparison, but I think you missed on some of the biggest differences, when it comes to masking, which for me are the biggest point pro Capture One. Not only have you a Magic Brush which works a bit like the Quick Selection in Photoshop and is much more accurate than what you can do in LR. But on top you have options to extend or refine masks to make better transitions. Also the Luma-Range tool gives you a lot more control. This combined with the option to use any tool locally is a big deal. Another thing that is quite different is, that you can customize keyboard shortcuts and many tools are available with easy access shortcuts. This makes editing much more efficient. Also the cloning tool is more robust in Capture One because you can extend/erase part of your cloning area later on, whereas in LR you have to start over.
    LR of course also has its advantages. As of now HDR/Panos/Super Resolution are not in Capture One (HDR/Panos coming this winter, but unkown how good it will be). Dehaze is also working better in LR. Also the Keystone tool is better, especially the auto mode which is not really usefull in C1. Since there are less tools in Lightroom, it is generally a little bit easier to use, but I find C1 more powerful.

    • @berlinerffm
      @berlinerffm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Stephen Littlewood I wouldn't say pro only use Adobe. Capture One is quite capable and depending on your subjects and kind of work It will fit quite well into a raw workflow and might even be better than LR. It depends on personal preferences. If you need editing beyond the capabilities of LR or C1, Photoshop is surely the best option, but you can use it with LR as well as Capture one.

  • @goldfinch2283

    There is a huge advantage in C1, namely the fact that you have access to ALL development tools when using masks. In LR you are limited to basic tools when using the newest masking tool.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I will note about sessions in C1, is that it does force you to copy your files into that session's folder, whereas with a LR catalog, the photos stay where they are on your drive, and it just references them. For most people this probably isn't a huge issue, but it could mean that if you wanted to keep a copy outside of the Catalog (for use in other programs for example) you may end up with duplicate copies of your images because C1 Sessions require you to store them in the Session folder somehow up "ingesting" them, or when you shoot tethered into a session. For this, I would say that using Multiple LR catalogs may be a better route as it won't require you to duplicate your source files basically. Oddly, when working with a regular Catalog in CaptureOne you can choose to have C1 just reference the files (leave them where they are on your drive and not copy them) but I can understand the reasoning behind this I guess since Sessions are really intended for people who are working on separate things (clients) that may need to stay separate.

  • @Mousyfox

    I think one big advantage of the Photographer subscription with Adobe is that you get Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge. The subscription is only half as much as that of the Pro version of Capture One and you still need Photoshop or an equivalent app to do the things that Capture One can't achieve, such as content aware move or fill. The capture one spot removal tools is only good for light spots, so you need Photoshop or equivalent for removing any unwanted items. Admittedly you left of some of the things that you can do better in Capture One than in Lightroom but you don't have Photoshop to fall back on without the subscription. I still think Adobe is better value for money if you want to keep up with the latest technology.

    the big flaw I noticed when switching to capture one from lightroom is that c1 generates very low quality previews and this thing really annoying me, has anyone else noticed it?

    The biggest and most powerfull difference is the layer capability of c1. You can use almost all tools on layers, which gives you limitless combinations. There are lots of YT videos, that show, how layers can be used.

    C1 and LR have different raw processors. As such there are subtle differences between the raw files just during the initial image load on straight out of the camera raws. For instance - I shoot with a Pentax K1 which has the same sensor as the Nikon D810 and the Sony A7r. I shoot night landscapes with the Milky Way. The foregrounds are usually 4-minute exposures (in absolute darkness). The K1 and the D810 suffer from what is referred to as "white dots" - images that look like they have salt sprinkled over them. Now Nikon updated the firmware on the D810 to eliminate the problem - however that changed the white balance and the overall color image quality of the images (check out the Cameraville videos comparisons). This approach was apparently also used on the D850. Pentax has not modified anything - you either live with dots or you do Long Exposure Noise Reduction / Dark Frame Subtraction. However, the C1 raw processor removes the dots just by loading the image into C1. Raw Tharepee also removes the dots with their noise reduction - impulse noise tool slider.
    On the downside - try as I might, LR does a better job in terms of bringing out the colors within the Milky Way's core. Also, I do need PS in order to composite the foreground landscape frames with the sky Milky Way frames.
    One thing I do wish C1 would do is to extend their excellent layers workflow so as to enable the application of the same layer across two separate images and then let extract the layered portion from image 1 into the same layer in image 2 - essentially a layered composite operation

    In my workflow, Capture One is a clear winner when it comes just to retouching photos. You don't have to fire up Photoshop for basic edits like I find myself often doing when using Lightroom. But. Big but is that if you actually need to do actual image manipulation for example edging out backgrounds and putting another in etc. Then you just NEED photoshop and Adobe's offering is better value. Just for photo retouching Capture One is more enjoyable and intuitive to use though. I use both because I feel I need both. Well, I wouldn't need Capture One but I really want to use it over Lightroom.

    I do like C1 for color adjustments, especially when using the Advanced setting in Color Editor, all I have to do is click on a color and change it without having to use HSL sliders. I also like the ease of fixing blown Highlights by using Luma in Curves. What I have had trouble with C1 is with editing older DNG files from my LR catalog. The only White Balance Modes available for DNG other than Shot are Tungsten, Daylight, Cloudy and Shade. When I use PS, I have at least 8 White Balance Mode choices for DNG. C1 RAW files display at least 9 White Balance Mode choices. I converted a RAW file using C1 to DNG to see if I would have more White Balance choices, but their was no change.This is why when I started to use C1, I stopped converting RAW files to DNG.

    Pretty fair run-through and comparison - thank you! For me (a Fuji user) C1 demosaicing and processing x-trans raw files is much, much better, which makes LR a non-starter for me. I've also started to use tethering more - and C1 tethering really is fantastic. But C1's DAM is not great, especially in terms of filters for analytics.

    Maybe it's just me, but I think the colors are richer in Capture One. I don't mean more saturated, just better color. Lightroom is too complicated in cataloging. And, I don't like the subscription with Lightroom. And, i always resize and save in Photoshop. Brightness & contrast is available in Photoshop. I I don't tether even though I'd like to, because the images aren't written to the camera card. That safety backup is lost. I like C1 layers. If C1 could do compositing I'd get rid of Adobe.

And, Ps is too complicated and time consuming, and "refine hair" is actually a "Make subject bald" brush. If ON1 worked the way it's supposed to I'd use it and C1 and get rid of all Adobe. Maybe ON1 2022 will be better.
