    If you are new here, hey! I am Natalie - follower of Jesus, wife to my childhood best friend, and homeschool mama to three.
    I’m also the ORIGINAL creator of “MESSY TO MINIMAL”- a widely-popular extreme decluttering and home organization series that I started in 2020. In the course of about a year, my husband and I worked to simplify our home and lifestyle. With our first pass through our home we got rid of over 80% of our possessions. Nowadays, we’re not keeping track of the number, because decluttering is more of a maintenance task to invest into the health and simplicity of our home and family life moving forward!
    I continue to share this series as a way to completely DEMOLISH the idea that decluttering is a one and done activity (especially in a home with young children!) I am here to give you non-judgmental encouragement and some gentle motivation for your own decluttering and simple-living journey!

      I never liked the bathroom issue of a onesie, but you can do this! I used to fantasize a closet of white linen dresses, kinda like Olive Oil's from Popeye.

    My seasonal stuff gets put away. The winter stuff is just so big and bulky, it doesn't make sense to keep it all out all the time here. But my summer "seasonal" collection is quite small - some shorts and floral dresses. My base wardrobe - like all pants and shirts - stay in the drawers always. We also go from really cold winters to potentially quite moderate summers here in Norway, so most things can be used year around.
    I'm currently doing a challenge from wool& though, where I bought this wool dress and wear "only" that for 100 days. It will probably take me longer as I have many days where what I wear is clothes for working outside or with the chickens, but I wear that dress whenever I go to the store or into the office or meet up with friends. That's a challenge that will really minimize your closet for around three months!

    I also tried the seasonal bins this summer and found it didn’t work for me as more time went on. It helped me filter my clothing a bit more as I realized I had a few duplicate items, but overall, I prefer having immediate access to my entire wardrobe. I have two side by side hanging closet cabinets and I’ve switched the seasonal clothing back and forth so the current seasonal clothing is with my jewelry collection and off season is in my “storage” closet. I’ve found that works really well for me

    I haven’t done a seasonal bin before. I will usually just put my in season clothes to the part of the closet or drawer that’s easiest to reach. It’s always worked really well for me! Love these videos and all the gentle motivation!🍁🧡

    You’ve inspired me to refresh my small closet. I set aside off season clothing (mostly bulky coats during the summer) in two thin storage bags at the top of our reach-in closet. My husband and I each have about 4’ of width to store ALL our clothes and coats and shoes, no dressers/underbed bins/storage closets for more. We have 4 seasons and wide temperature swings are not uncommon (up to 80° last week and down to 15° this week) so keeping things minimal and at the ready works best for us.
    Part of my intentional living journey has led me to looking into what companies we support in a world that seems increasingly in opposition to our faith.

    Love that you were decluttering as a team and that you both recognise old favourites that are no longer needed in your clothing inventory.
    Side note Blundstone boots (or Blun-ies as we call them in Australia) will only get more comfortable the more you wear them. They mold to your unique foot shape and are so durable and easy to slip on. Great boots.

    My solution to the seasonal bin, always keep out just two items (example - two short sleeve shirts for myself and each of my kids) from the last season. Then, whenever I need them in that transitional period - I have them handy. They just hang out at the back of the closet or bottom of the drawer but it work for us!

    I live in the north so it gets real cold and I keep all seasons in my closet year around. I’ve found when I did use a season bin I forgot what I had and ended up spending money on doubles. I still do a capsule wardrobe and just put the “off season” things to one side of the closet. But whatever works for your brain is really what’s best. Some times you just have to adjust a bit.

    • @christiana_mandalynn
      @christiana_mandalynn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am the same way! I have to keep all seasons where I can see them because of weather extremes and I am lucky to have space in my closet to push my off-season clothing there but still have access to it. Otherwise I forget what I have and spend unnecessary money buying the same things!

    • @NatalieBennett
      @NatalieBennett  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yesssss! I've done this too. "Out of sight out of mind" has its merits, sometimes, but I've definitely doubled on things that were TOO "out of mind" up there in the bin!

  • @JVHarberden
    @JVHarberden 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I'm with you on the seasonal bin. I no longer do that either. The only separate clothing bin I have is for maternity clothes and then when I'm using it, I take things out of my closet that definitely will not work during pregnancy. I like being able to see everything I have and it makes taking things out of my collection very easy.

    • @Conval-wi5eh
      @Conval-wi5eh 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same here! I used to have a seasonal bin, but I found the task of pulling it out and switching over so daunting. Also, the big bulky winter clothes didn't really fit in there.
      I, too, live somewhere with a wide range in temperature (15 °F - 100 °F) and my winter and summer wardrobe are completely different (except for bras and pantys, but I even use different socks). I moved several times during the last three years and didn't have furniture to store all my clothes. Now I have a dresser and a closet again. I keep the clothes in season in my dresser, the rest is neatly put away in drawers in my closet. Everything is easily accessible at all times. When seasons are changing, I gradually pull some pieces out. When they get washed, I already put them in my dresser. When the new season has completely arrived I switch over all the seasonal clothing. This task is easy because I use cardboard boxes as dividers in my dresser and my closet drawers - so I just switch out the boxes. No need to fold stuff or pull out bins from the top of my closet. It just takes a few minutes.

  • @pathtowellnesswithmiriam1371
    @pathtowellnesswithmiriam1371 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I keep everything in my closet and just rotate clothes in my drawers. I like to put out of season stuff in the bottom drawer or on a high shelf. I use bins for my kids though because they will wear sweatpants in 100 degrees or shorts in 30 degrees if I don't stash them away.

  • @ChristianAnneSmith

      I just put away the really bulky winter coats and gloves, scarfs etc. in summer to keep the hallway simple. And I change seasons for my kids because I don’t want to argue with a 3yo why they cannot wear shorts in the middle of german winter or their wool sweater for going to the beach in summer.

    Natalie, I love how intentional you are with your videos…including the background music. I found myself in tears while I was decluttering my closet because I’m having a difficult time knowing that my oldest child will be graduating from high school this year. I’m putting away clothes that he has outgrown (size men’s Medium) to save for my younger son. It’s just surreal. I know I have much more to declutter, so I’m grateful for your videos to guide and encourage me. Thank you, Natalie!!❤️

    I love your minimal jewelry collection and it closely resembles the amount of jewelry I actually use and wear. However I have a huge collection of jewelry that I keep because I guess it’s sentimental, but I never reach for it. Do you have any tips for letting go of things and looking more critically at what actually gets used? I’m a minimal jewelry wearer and I’m not sure why I find it such a sticking point.

    I do have a seasonal bin but it’s very small and just lives in my wardrobe. In summer it has my hats, scarfs and gloves in. In winter it has my shorts and handbag (I only use a handbag in the summer as I don’t have coat pockets). All other clothes like jumpers and skirts stay in my wardrobe all year round.

    I have bins in my closet labeled for out of season tops, bottoms, and PJs, respectively and another one for “occasion wear” which has mostly fancy clothes and hiking clothes. I love this system bc it keeps those items separate but easy to access! I also keep “personal” and “work” clothes on separate sides of my closet bc I dress VERY differently for work

    • @ChildofGod318
      @ChildofGod318 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My system is similar! My dresser is for personal clothes and pants. My closet is for work clothes, fancy clothes, and off season shoes. Sometimes I'm a little overwhelmed by seeing all of my clothes at once, but its just the season I'm in right now that I need separate business wear for work.

    I keep everything in my closet all year, but I do micro-organize them. I actually bought some custom dividers on Etsy. For instance, I wear black leggings 95% of the time. So I needed to separate them by: workout, regular, fleece-lined, capri, etc. That way I’m not looking through all of them when I’m looking for something specific. It’s a game-changer.

    Natalie, when you switched from the bin to the drawers I, literally, cheered! 😂🎉 A couple of years ago, the LORD led me to do the same thing (the Holy Spirit is the most BRILLIANT decluttering Coach!! 🙌🙌), and it has been an absolute DREAM! For me, it is the perfect combination of having the unseasonal pieces not cluttering the visual of my closet whole still keeping them accessible...which is important, because I live in Kentucky where we can often go through all 4 seasons in one day. 😂 It's also great because I don't have to deal without the the physical hassle of a giant tub (SO much easier and enjoyable to just transfer from hangar to drawer) and also because the drawer becomes my container so that if it starts to feel crammed I know it's time to declutter. And, for all that, it still is this fun discovery every time I pull out the new season that feels like I'm "shopping my closet". So WIN, WIN, WIN!!! So excited for you to try it out, too! 😃🙌🙌🙌🙌💖

    Weston's "I look like a Stormtrooper" made me burst out laughing lol
    Also, Michigander here with what feels like 6 months of cold/winter lol Honestly? I don't swap out seasonal stuff or like pack it away or whatever. It stays in the drawers and closets and kinda just gets moved around with the seasons. Shorts and tank tops make their way to the front/tops of drawers during the summer, and summer dresses and things front of the closet, and then vice versa during the winter! Cuz some things (like Tshirts and some leggings or the occasional hoodie) do get worn year round :)

Now i keep my off season clothes in a separate closet still hung so it's easily accessible if i need something. It also makes decision making easy as i can see everything I WOULD wear for that specific season.

    As an Oregonian, I do put SOME things away seasonally, but it’s usually only my heavy winter clothes, some long John’s, and a couple holiday themed pieces. I’ve got an ‘auntie claus’ t shirt and two pairs of Christmas leggings that don’t need to be out all year. But for pants/shorts/tshirts/sweaters etc all of that stays out year round 😂 we’ve had snow on the 4th of July, and some winters we miss out on the snow completely. Every day is a gamble on what the weather will be, so I always have to be prepared 😅🤣

    I have never used a seasonal tote. Years ago, I redid my closet with built-in drawers, space for shoes, and a few open shelves. I have no dressers, either. It all fits in my closet, and I love it! If I didn't declutter, I could not have done this. I don't miss anything.

    Awesome video! I've enjoyed your videos for years! I was wondering if you could do a video geared towards children. I honestly think the hardest thing for me is to not accumulate things for my son 😅 not even necessarily because he wants it as he's still really young. I just love getting things for him (I try to stick with Montessori/educational things). How do you keep the same mindset with your kid!? Please help!! Especially this time of year I feel like is the hardest 🤣

    I live in Chicago, and it is snowing today. I have all of my clothes in my closet all year long. We have a standard non-walk in closet that I share half of it with my husband. I have one of every type of clothing, like one wool coat, one rain coat, one windbreaker, etc. And most of my items like pants and coat and shoes are in nuetral colors, so it goes with everything.

    We do the seasonal bin because we live in a small space (my husband and I each have one drawer and about 1 foot of closet space). As we have distinct and extreme seasons we swap out our clothes and store off season clothes under the bed. If I had the space to keep all my clothes out all year I would.

    The extra clothing bins I keep are 1) formal wear 2) ski and extra warm gear. I live in the mountains, so we use our warm clothes year round, but I do find that I can store some of my extra thermal layers away with my ski clothes. I have 3 fleece shirts I go through in the winter, but in Summer one is enough. I keep all my sweaters and casual clothes out 100%. Giant ski coats and gloves go away, sleeker puffy coat stays out 🐲

    I brought my tote up from the basement a few days ago to switch out seasonal clothes. I think I'll still keep the out of season clothes in totes but you encouraged me to declutter and be firm about decluttering. I think the two small shelves you put up for jewelry was a great idea. It looks nice and keeps "stuff" off the top of the dresser.

    I switch mine out, but I have less closet space to store clothing. I only switch out though in spring and fall. So my spring switch is for spring/summer, fall is for fall/winter.

    I’m late to this party, but I have a question! How do you find the motivation to continue on with projects when you’re interrupted or have to pause for the day? Is that a helpful part of content creation, it forces you to finish? I’m so notorious for just stepping away and not getting back to it for weeks. The wonderful world of ADHD 😅

    I have basically 2 seasons. I am now using a drawer to help switching things out and just one bin for all my heavier knitwear. I do however, hang on to dresses that I wore at places were important to me (college grad, wedding, Tanzania trip). I have the closet space. I use half of a double door walk-in closet for my normal wear clothes and if I’m feeling overwhelmed I put a sheet over the others to “hide” or create a calmer solid colored visual space.

I totally need something like your passions to save space and update but for now its not int he budget so have some overlap

    When we moved last year our closet size was cut in half. The best thing we did was to invest in a closet system that we installed ourselves which made it very affordable. Two rows of hanging each (3 1/2 feet long) plus we each have 4-5 drawers with shelves above for sweaters (2 feet wide) and 2 one foot wide sections for long hanging, double hanging or shelves for shoes. Top shelves are luggage and extra blankets. We fit so much into our closet and a few extra things that are not used often go in the long dresser that is in the bedroom. Of course the best thing we have done over the years is to go down to a minimal wardrobe. We wash a load on Monday and a load on Friday (no sorting and we could go longer if needed).

    I started a seasonal bin yesterday for the first time in my life. We moved back to Europe after being in the tropics for a while and there's no way that I'm wearing those summer clothes in a while. Me and my partner are sharing one 5-drawer dresser and a 1 meter clothing rack so we didn't really have the space anyways

    The only "seasonal bin" that I do with clothes is specifically holiday themed clothing. Christmas sweaters, Halloween shirts, etc; these all get stashed inside their respective holiday boxes. It's a pet peeve of mine to see themed things in my space when it's not that time of year, haha😅

    I used to live in Massachusetts and I live in the Florida now. I never really had a seasonal bin. I just had the winter clothes on the left hand side of the closet or in drawers. I wasn’t always grabbing for them and everything I needed was in the center of the closet. I think growing up we used to have outdoor gear in a tote.

    I don’t put away seasonal clothes anymore. Instead I have double short racks and blend all clothes and separate by color. By doing that I discovered new items that go together and I can layer better. It may be 20 degrees outside but inside it might be too hot for a big cozy sweater. ❤️
