@@nickypool415 Funny that even Sam L. Jackson himself was surprised on him becoming Nick Fury in the comics years before MCU happened, guess the comic artists were a fan of him 😂🤣
@@alfianfahmi5430 I don't know where you heard that. Sam actually agreed to let them use his likeness in Ultimates in exchange for 'if you make a movie with Fury in it, you cast me'. By 2002 they'd started making Marvel movies (just not the iron man era) so this was a reasonable demand.
My issue with representation nowadays is that they focus so much that they completely ignore the actual story and make this representation the whole center point of the show
@@Amaling haven't seen ms marvel, and don't have any issues with spider verse it did representation right especially without it being the main point of it's film or even in the miles spiderman game , but the issue is they force these things about the character in weird moments that don't need the brought up or can just be shown without the need to say it
Another issue i have noticed is people with the funds to hire lets say morgan freeman create a piece of media and instead of casting the best and most appropriate actors for the roles just hire literally anybody of color and have them do the role. Resulting in extremely inexperienced and poor actors playing our favorite characters. If you want to make captain America black then you should hire a great black actor and not just any old black actor.
@@numbingcactus153 I agree with ur point BUT, it sounds like u have a issue with the falcon becoming captain America which isn't right, cuz that is what happens in the comic, so it's not like the little mermaid thing where they just turned cap black for no reason
My problem with this entire topic is... Do you really need to "relate" to a character? I'm a latino living in my third world country. I've never really seen shows with representation toward "my group" and I've never cared either. I don't need need to relate to a fictional character, just give me a good anime or a show, that's the only thing I need to enjoy a piece of media.
Unless the intention is to make people hate the character, yes it is necessary, the problem is that the meaning of "relating" to a character has been distorted into looking exactly like you, living in the same country and having your exact same orientations in bed
Why did you think that you personally not caring for representation was a good argument? Clearly a shit ton of people do care and it means something to them. Lol
@@za-ir5ni how does it matter? does it improve a story? I swear, this is the problem with this "ME" generation. We simply get the modern shitty writing we deserve
EXACTLY !!! I’m Puerto Rican and I never cared about representation ... just give me a good story and good characters !!! Woke shit ruined everything ! Changing someone’s race, skin color or gender-swap and call it a day it’s an awful way to do it ! Or or .... just create a new fucking character/story that has to do nothing with an existing brand ! MILES MORALES IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHAT TO DO !!! HE IS A REAL CHARACTER !!!
@za-ir5ni Why not make a character who isn't relatable but likable? You can make characters who share nothing with you but are still attractive in some way, same goes for people irl. I gets tiring to surround yourself with clones, and it certainly can't be healthy.
In the paraphrased words of Stan Lee “Any one can be under the mask. Anyone can be Spider-Man. If you wanna make a new SpiderMan who’s a different race or gender make a new one. Just don’t change Peter Parker.” This statement and the meaning behind it, was the reason i was disappointed that they race swapped Jessica in Spiderverse (also she is a terrible mother. That baby gonna have so much brain damage) (and i know this can just be another version of her who is black. Just dont know why they didnt just go for her original look as her first appearance in the movie)
If comics characters aged in real time and there was no reboots or death resurrecting. We would have a more diverse dc and marvel most the original xmen would be dead superman and batman would be dead. We had a balck and Hispanic green lantern till hal Jordan came back from the dead
The thing about xmen is none of these characters need to live for the story. If the xmen and brotherhood of mutants both died. The Story could keep going here is dara a mutant born 30 years after the great mutant purge that killed all the xmen he must hide his powers because he doesn't want to get purged, dara was inspired by the writing of magneto and Xzavor and wants to achieve what they tried and failed to do.
@@majdjinn5042I believe the point is, that it's the mindset and the moral fibre that matters, not the colour of their skin or their genitalia. After all, peel away the skin and take away the genitalia, and we'd all be the same screaming, bleeding abomination of a flesh computer, piloting a bone mech, covered in meat armour.
they all lacked diversity that is what made them bad diversity is not your skin color/ethnicity its your personality and who you are that makes you diverse
Right! The absolute worst way to demand diversity is to force it on content creators who have absolutely no idea how to write for these diverse groups properly! It often resorts to race-swapping or one-dimensional, stereotypical, caricatures of the minority group they’re trying to represent. Instead of forcing it, start supporting new and talented artists who actually want to tell diverse stories that represents their minority groups. Go out and spend your own money to see their movies in theaters, make time to watch their shows on streaming, and put their names out there on social media!
I feel like it’s fine if a character embraced their nationality. culture or sexuality. But I feel like it’s a problem if that becomes their personality instead of being a part of their personality.
But that’s exactly the problem. Either you have corporate ‘creators’ just trying to latch onto what’s hip or cool; or you have current generation creators who make that THEIR personality, so of course that’s how they think they should write characters.
The galbrush paradox, The more you make a character represent something the less they can represent. When a character becomes a representation of a group they become limited in scope, and personality to the point that even the people that they "represent" doesn't resonate with them as a character. instead they become a cardboard cutout. For example Lets say I had a hard drinking, gambling addicted, promiscuous, slightly corrupt, private detective who solves crimes for charity and does the right thing the dirty way in nobel sacrifices to keep other people clean, That's a fun noir character. It resonates with people because the character if flawed with a heart of gold which many people feel they are. Doesn't matter what walk of life or nation you hail from, everyone has struggled with their baser nature and doing the right thing for someone in a way that gets you punished. However when I make him a representative of people say Hispanic or Black then the negitive aspects make the character look bad and thus the people look bad. So out goes the gambling, hard drinking, promiscuous and corrupt, natures that give form and complexity to the character. We are removing entire dimensions of their character to have a boyscout because otherwise *your saying something about a group of people* and thats bad.
@@NameIsDoc ... no offense meant, but... lol sounds like an overly winded way of if everyone's super, no one will be. Reminds me a lot of that comment from Incredibles. Very true though, not wrong, and yeah your comment is different, just from 1st paragraph it reminded me of that phrase.
Depends, that can work, like in the case of say Black Panther or Miles Morales Spider Man, but others it might not. Part of why it works with the former 2 is they don't beat you over the head repeatedly with it. Then look at Princess and the Frog, the original story wasn't set in Louisianna, and yet the Disney rendition is, and it molds itself into a good and unique story and movie. Meanwhile lets look at Indiana Jones, it's the 5th movie... and it's just that Indi fighting Nazis like movies 1, 3, and 4, yet people are disliking it, and in spite of the entire reason Indy is old and depressing like he is, is because his actor Harrison Ford wanted the audience to feel that from Indy. Even though fans want to see another bad ass adventure, whipping, shooting, and swinging his way in and out of trouble, we get that... yet they're complaining because it's mid, because well... Indy is embracing his oldness (a culture?... no, is being old a nationality?... no... sexuality?... no at least don't think so, but who knows some people identify as attack helicopters today), is that becoming his personality or is it already a part of it? I'd say the latter personally. I'd still say it's better than Crystal Skull that was... something else, but everyone else is hating on it for being mid, in spite of one being actually called bad. What then? It's an embrace of character, it's playing into his slightly altered personality, yet still getting hate.
My name is Miles Morales and I am a..... xD but you know his points ring true though, a lot of those "diversity" characters, and even the characters not meant for diversity points are just written in such a shit way. I mean I might not ever have published anything yet but for crying out loud these people have no idea what makes a character strong, relatable, or even just enjoyable to watch.
There’s one thing Miles has that sets him apart from all the others: he’s not a raceswap replacement. He came about as the revival of the Ultimate Comics line, several years after it ended with Ultimatum, and the last thing we saw was that Peter Perker was dead. This was Miles pulling a Dick Grayson and taking up a mantle left on the floor, not a character taking from one still actively in play.
Except that ultimate Peter Parker came back, there was a whole storyline of Peter realize how he has healing factor like Norman. Peter even gives Miles his blessing to take on the mantle and Peter retires to be with his family
At first I thought I was going to hate the video because of the cringe and sus thumbnail titile. But after watching it, it was actually not bad. He managed to explain what was wrong with Hollywoods lazy attempts at diversity without resorting to right wing buzzwords and bitching and moaning about "woke". We need more TH-camrs like this guy.
As a minority myself I agree but I draw the line when you change existing heroes for a narrative I grew up on Superman and Batman I ain't white you can make them look like me but the replacement ain't gonna be Superman and Batman I know We also should probably destroy the idea of only relating to the character that looks like us It's just a stupid mindset People relate to characters because their struggles their stories and their personality look a second nature
I'd like to point out that while Miles is good in the games and the movies, he was quite literally created just to be "black Spider-Man" and nothing more, since his inception in the comics.
What’s funny is in one of his comics, he directly says he doesn’t want to JUST be ‘black Spider-Man’ after watching some nutter influencer screaming about how she saw his black skin when his suit got torn in a fight.
The best thing that they did for Miles Moralis when creating him, was putting him in another Umiverse. If people want to relate to him, he is still there, while he was at the same time one of many spider-people Peter Parker met. Only late they pulled him in the main universe. It's a perfect tactic, to introduce a new character, see how people react and change small things about the character if needed before introducing it into the main world. But they didn't do that with amny characters Iron Heart, when I remember correctly was inteoduced directly after Iron Mans "death". A black girl from university who build her own iron man suit from scrap. It's funny how much hate Jason Todd got for being a perfect copy of Dick Grayson, it shows just giving someone a different name doesn't matter when you only change the name in order to be able to say you did so...
He's afro latino! He's a mixed Spider-Man of both Black and Puerto rican decent. It's not the first time we get a mixed character for example Spider-Man 2099 Mexican and Irish back in the 90s no one said anything. But because miles is half black he's viewed only as black and people got a problem with it 🤦🏾 get over yourselves. Say you're racist without saying it.
Nux "Don't you dare call me the rule 34 guy that is not my legacy." Also Nux "I hosted the world's most degen rule 34 tournament ($10,000)" We all know the truth
I agree with all this, especially showing off Static Shock, I grew up with that show... yet I'm a white dude, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's my biggest complaint with all these Disney things especially, they're pushing trying to be nice and diverse because "Oh we're Disney, we "care" about people", like what... why? Why not do something original? Why change something such as the Little Mermaid of which I also grew up with, one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid, yet I'm not out here asking for a little merboy. The actress also took to twitter (of which well... for starters never do that lol), saying oh she wanted to make a black princess for kids like her to look up to... I'm sorry does the Princess Frog not exist? It's a good movie, she's a Disney princess with black skin... like... what? Why ignore that? Why not make another new Disney Princess, why change something and upset people? Yet if I took to the internet with these complaints, I'm sure I'd be canceled, called racist.
Because originality does not sell. Think about the most successful stories now and think about how they are related to existing stories. And while the princess and the frog exist, she is not as popular as Ariel.
@@mangamandrew I don't disagree especially with Princess and the Frog vs Ariel... I mean despite liking it, I couldn't tell you what her name is. I mean to be fair I grew up with Little Mermaid, Princess and the Frog I was a teen at that point I think. That being said... also ignorant to claim it doesn't exist when it does lol, not hard to do research on that either, looking up all the Disney Princesses she kind of stands out. Don't disagree with 1st statement either, in fact I've said that in most of Nux's videos addressing this. He says movies need to original to sell, that movies are failing because none of them are original... but that's not entirely correct either. Sure Elemental and Teenage Kraken are unoriginal and failing... but no idea is original anymore. Even something like the Spiderverse, a phenomenal movie according to everyone (can't speak from experience haven't seen it... but ye 1st movie was really good, that alone can speak volumes), and it doesn't do anything inherently original. What matters is how you twist it to feel new. Even little mermaid, where does that story come from? Book by Hans Christian Anderson of the same name, very few differences, most notably the mermaid dies and didn't have a name, vs movie she lives and well Ariel is her name lol. Rather than a grim ending, it's happy, with a few other elements. Every super hero movie ever, can be traced to Superman, or even further back to King Arthur, or even further still to the great and almighty Heracles, EVEN FURTHER STILL to the world's 1st known hero Gilgamesh. Nothing is wholey original, arguably never has, what sticks is in how you twist it to be its own identity. This is also why Miles Morales can stand out despite Spider Man being the most famous superhero, sure he's just another Spider Man, but he also does a lot of unique things, unlike She Hulk, female Thor, dark skinned Ariel... huh noticing a lot are female lol. I kid I kid, I don't doubt females can be written well, but... definitely hard to do so. Especially when a lot of newer things, are just trying to measure them up to men, vs say Mulan from the animated movie, she played to her womanly skills. Woman are generally more intelligent, I'm not going to get offended by that, I have my own strengths. That's where all these characters fail, because they're trying to be someone they're not. Even my comment of Static Shock, his powers aren't inherently different from even villains, my 1st thoughts electro or shocker from Spider Man, Zues king of the Greek Gods, and yet... he still stands out. Characters can be "original" and successful... but we need to understand the difference between being inspired and copy pasting, vs shaping and molding something new from that inspiration.
@@mangamandrew Lol another comment I just read, they didn't make Nick Fury black... they made him Samuel L Jackson YES lol. He is his own identity separate from og Nick Fury, or the one I know from Ultimate Alliance, and he's definitely better for it because Sam is such an engaging and fun personality. A good example of this, not original, preexisting character, but works because he's his own identity separate from his comic version. On the other hand... then Disney also probably would twist it to mean they think they need famous people which... ye they kind of already are doing aren't they.
@@IgnatiusBlaze4 And that’s kind of what most of the modern heroes are. They made Iron Man more like RDJ and same goes for Fury. But even so, it’s just significantly harder to sell series based on Original Characters with a Major IP. It’s not an impossibility but the issue would be how to make more money for it and some of the more original ideals are not always long lasting.
Problem with miles is, in the comics, just Peter Darker. In other media, he's not his comic character. In the MCU, I still don't understand how Kamala is a fan of Captain Marvel.
She saw her saving the day a lot in the comics cause she wasn't anti earth and stayed on her freaking planet so when she awakened her mutant powers she named herself her. Not sure why mcu Ms marvel does either. She is never on the planet
No no, there is a difference. If you simply talk to a villain, it may not necessarily sway them from their wicked nature. Talk no Jutsu is talking to a villain while empowered by plot.
That's not true. It's only when talking to the villain actually works that it's Talk no Jutsu. Just look at Goku and Frieza from Dragon Ball. How many times has Goku spared the people he fought who used to be villains? Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta... Then, we have Frieza, who's still trying to kill Goku to this day! Yeah, they may have worked together during that one tournament, but that doesn't mean Talk no Jutsu ever worked on Frieza! Talk no Jutsu makes villains quit being villains, basically.
@@serienzp But that’s the point, talk no jutsu means that you can’t have a heart to heart with a villain without it being seen as a flaw. Even if a villain does not do a complete heel turn, people will still say it’s talk no jutsu because people believe talking to the villain or antagonist is talk no jutsu.
Nux, Master of Rule 34!!! This was a great video to react to. The views expressed were told well and made me think about a few points I hadn't thought of before.
When it comes to characters, i don't care what actor it is or what race they are, what I do care is that they can portray the character correctly and the story is writen well.
The biggest problem is these characters don't have their own stories, they don't have their own villains or arcs they are just poor copies of other people's stories.
I find it hilarious that we have people saying they can't relate to characters because of nationality or skin color while my brothers and I related and looked up to four green turtles who eat boxes of pizza.
It's funny how the diversity argument goes like this "we need xxx because there are people who don't identify as xyz thus we need to x-swap the characters" but then it's followed by "if you don't go watch the movie with xxx you are an xxx-ist" Like the fact people don't see the problem with that is probably 30% of the reason why industry is failing as hard as it is right now. Yes i made the % up.
I've said it once and I will keep saying it again, one of the very first shows i saw as a child and my favorite show to this day is transformers beast wars. They are alien robots with really shoddy cgi rendering but i love that show because the characters are well established and unique. I was not offended that there isn’t a Mexican American in the cast, because "race" didn't factor into the story Spiderman, the flash, jackie chan adventures, power rangers, xiolin showdown........... they all had characters i enjoyed ranging from one that look like me to the complete opposite but they have something i can identify with I dont need a mexican spiderman for me to enjoy spiderman, i wanted insomniacs spiderman and they delivered and then some. I hate "diversity" because they're just a check list from a studio, not a character with their own identity that doesnt care whether i like them or not Stop race swapping white characters, stop changing characters sexual orientation and MAKE GOOD CHARACTERS!!! "Oh but nobody likes gay black characters" Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99 begs to differ
I relate more to a characters motivation and character more than their appearance. They just need to write good characters and people will relate to them, but we all know they can't write full stop let alone write good characters.
8:55 Damn even the actor she would run in the role with had to make a funny face I know that wasn't part of the script but it's just something that was put in there and Disney just roll with it💯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As someone who is neither black nor from the US can somebody tell me if the typically brooklyn big city black culture is really what people think about mainly when thinking "that is black culture"? I mean from an outside perspective it looks that this is just one of many different subcultures. What about more african culture? New Orleans? Basically what I am asking is there really such a thing as black culture that most people mean when they talk about it or is everybody talking about different things?
Black Americans don't really have any identity or culture to latch onto from their African background, so whatever they were able to make with literal scraps is heavily treasured. That's why you hear black Americans explicitly bring up "all about the culture" when discussing stuff like Basketball and hip hop, no other group in the USA really does this. But Black Americans had their culture taken away from them and had to build a brand new one and it's all documented in just a few centuries, very unique situation. It's also very different from the lived experiences and cultures of Black people in South America Africa the Caribbeans and most recently Europe. South American and Carribean situation/context is similar in tragedy to North America, but because of different localities you get different specific cultural items. In Africa there is of course a very rich culture despite colonizers best attemptd in the past whether from Europe or Arabia. And the recent big groups in Europe just bring their historical culture and adapt it to a European setting. Black people in other parts of the world are a few islands spread around with significant populations, and elsewhere just very low populations. So yeah its definitely not one broad stroke
The people who often write promote "This is a Black Characters " as their identity come from the coastal big city like New York, LA, and so on. To them, black culture is what they see around them. I saw them claim that Souther Black people act like a racist stereotype because the way they speak and Black people that don't act a certain way are viewed as "Not Black enough", often the people that focus on race and culture have a very limited understanding of the world outside their own place.
My problem with Miles is that he is not just spiderman, he is better. Like laughably better, with power that make even less sense, like he got all the original abilities, but got electric and stealth powers on top of that. Additionally I find this strange as only in recent years they retconned that Peters father was involved with the spiders and him being bitten and surviving as well as gaining powers was only possible, because his father used his own DNA when experimenting with the spiders.
I really hate how they make Miles the "better" spider-man ability wise, but try to prop him up as a good character when he's a dishrag compared to Peter
The fact that the only media of Spider-Man that has Peter’s father be part of the spider experiment was only in the Andrew Garfield movies, not the comics, the shows or even the games, just the 2 movies that were going through a storyline that probably won’t get resolved
Representation really only accomplishes something when grounded in strong character writing and storytelling. Themes come out naturally through storytelling. Forcing in themes you want that don’t quite fit just makes for a worthless story.
This is also proof that I turn my brain off when I'm watching shows now because I remember watching this series and I didn't even think about this moment when she said that just like I was watching shehulk I didn't think about a lot of the stuff she was doing💯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Diverse characters also include diverse backgrounds. Optional if they’re for simple movies like most comedies or action movies (bullet train being a fav example)
I love that we've gotten to the point where people are tired of being represented. As a kid I grew up with not that many representations of me on TV other than hooker or single mother or prostitute. It's super nice that we got to the point where people are like ' I don't want to see people like me on the screen because we're always the villain...' Now it's ' I don't want to be on the screen unless it's perfect and I agree with everything!' Progress!!! Now all we need is a bevy of choice to the point where people can actually create characters that aren't as token as PTSD Vietnam vet. But hey it's one step at a time. I think this generation would probably break if they had to watch Captain Planet as much as they don't like inclusive diversity just for it. I kind of want 20 somethings to watch TV shows from the late '80s to early '90s so they see how far we have come as a society that is multicultural.
Ironic how being overly inclusive can end up doing a disservice to the groups they are trying to represent by making them 2 dimensional, not so great characters, or missing the mark completely
As a fan of ms. marvel I thought it was ok not as good as the comics but it felt like a good 70% of the people working on it new the source material and mainly it was the higher ups that messed with it😅
Your videos are great Nux, but can someone please balance the volume? I turn the video up to hear the video you're watching and then... "OOOOHHH NOOOO" blows out my eardrums 😂
In regards to the Blizzard Diversity calculator. It was written and drawn up and put out to public as a mining canary but it was never used and debunked after the backlash.
this is the preoduct of writers and ´producers that would not watch a piece of media because of the identity of the character. they think thats how the world works so they write in a way only someone of their preferred ethnicity can enjoy
Bro nobody is thinking "I'm not gonna watch this movie because there's too many northern Europeans in it", get your head out of your ass. It's simply "hey broader representation could make a broader group of people happy"
@@AmalingLet's be honest, films that have to focus on representation 9 out of 10 are poorly written and have bad storytelling and have to rely on "representation" as a crutch. If they wanted to make a broader group of happy, they would have focused on making good movies with the broader group in mind instead of using them as excuses. TL;DC Representation does not excuse a film for being terrible.
@FireGlitch i think the operative word in the first part is "have" its not an issue or representation being in the movie its an issue of it being mandated or a forceful implant in the story isntead of a natural part of the flow of the story. On top of my head great movies shows with great representation: price of egypt, the breadwinner, saludos amigos, the book of life, klaus, mib the series, extreme ghostbusters and x men
Never once have I watched a show and thought "OMG that main character is white just like me! What a great show!" More like "Wow, this guy is a moron, this show is stupid... but at least the villains are awesome and the chicks are hot."
Miles morales isn’t his own character. Peter Parker in the ultimate universe dies and mile morales just takes his place. He starts dating oh Mary Jane and visiting aunt may…. He’s a pallet swap. Hence why his books never made it past like? 10-20 and always ended up being canceled and re started, hoping THIS TIME people would like the book. And as someone born in nyc that culture is not what nyc culture was.
I will also take this opportunity to talk about how great cartoons are at this. Shows like the owl houses, Craig of the Creek, moon girl, amphibia, and a lot more cartoons nowadays are really good with showing the representation of a culture, Race, and even sexuality in a really well done way. My favorite being Craig of the Creek, for the amount of diverse cultures, practices, and backgrounds their able to give a lot of episodes. Especially black culture. Which I’m here for.
13:55 So funny story. This entire comic was just stealth-cancelled. None of them ever existed, outside the vampire showing up as a minor character in a AU Blade comic.
The quality of the product should come first, not the labels. My green lantern is John Stewart, my favourite star trek captain is cisco they are brilliant characters, not because their black but because their well made.
They ruined Kamala lol. Her origin story in the comics was that she became a mutant and disguised herself as a blonde white girl because she was ashamed of her heritage. She learned to love herself and became so strong that she was able to lift Thor's hammer while hulk was holding it.
Blizzard be like "Straight white cis-men are OP, you need to balance things out." As for Miles though... it might be an unpopular opinion, but I just cannot warm up to him. Yeah, he is "his own character", but he is not his own hero. Him being "Spiderman" is a huge part of who he is as a character in a more meta-sense, he is benefiting off the legacy of an established and massively popular character. And he is clearly meant to replace Peter, who is slowly being phased out and pushed to the side. A big point of Spiderverse seems to be to minimize Peter's importance as being "the" Spiderman, because there are now so many others who are not Peter Parker. Though I have to admit that I don't care much about Peter Parker or Spiderman in general, I really respect the first Spiderverse movie for kicking of what seems like a new renaissance of animated movies and Peni is really cute while Noir was funny, but at the end of the day I have not much investment with that particular character. Superior Spiderman was fairly neat though.
Honestly, Peter getting replaced would be a good thing for him. Marvel writers have been going all-out in their vendetta against him lately, in recent issues they NTR'd him. Just end his misery and replace him with Miles/Ben/literally anyone else, nobody wants to see Peter get trashed again and again by Marvel writers.
Growing up Mexican in the 80s/90s the only superhero cartoon out at the time was Zorro(who is actually Spanish) and I know there are other Latino characters in both marvel and dc, but none of them are even close to the level of the big names of each franchise and as much as I wanted to see something like that I didn't want something lazy like a character taking on the mantle of another established hero or joining a corp of powerful individuals and definitely not something like race swapping, I wanted someone to take the time to create a character people would care about and look up to who just happened to be Latino whose culture influenced and not defined them.
Just to clarify, I am Mexican, Latino (never latinx, white labels) my dad asked me “if Black panther is so great and sees his fellow people suffering in the oppressive American landscape why doesn’t he spirit away his people to Wakanda?”
What are you talking about? Kyle is still a ginger. You put some doubt in my head and I had to double check, there isn't even a single picture on fandom or on google with him having black hair, he was still ginger the last time his hair were shown. Correction, after googling some more before posting, he did have black hair as an anime character in season 8 episode "good times with weapons", but that's non-canon appearance since the boys are imagining those appearances. Kyle was ginger before (season 5) and after (I believe the last time his hair were seen was covid special?)
@@Valaghlyn i was referencing the episode where mr garrison transitions and kyle becomes a tall black kid in order to play basketball. Kyle’s dad also becomes a dolphin.
Funny enough a lot of people don't know if Nick fury was originally White. But that's because Samuel Jackson does a really good job as Nick fury, and he's a good character. From the moment we saw him as Nick fury every interpretation of Nick fury from that point on I have seen has been black in comics and cartoons since he did such a good job with the role
@@toontastic6408 holy shit, that's even better. So you're telling me MCU Nick fury is a completely original character that is a good character all on his own and he just happens to be black? That is great, they focused on making a good character and then just had him cast by whoever played the role best, and that's exactly what they need to do more often. While yes some characters always have to be a specific race for example Miles Morales is always going to be Puerto Rican and black, they focused on making the character first and foremost and have the cultural stuff just be something that was there without making it the center point of the movies
She did not punch a whole to Pakistan. She punched a hole into the underground of the city and followed it to the ocean. They said earlier in the episode that a boat was waiting for him.
6:13 😂 & I will say this I could be wrong but I'm 90% sure they pick Jason Momoa not because he's not white fully but because he's cool also I do agree having a black character you're going to have my notice but making that character great you're going to have my love also shout out to the Milestone Universe for being goated
Don't think so. When a character is "done right," they're usually used as examples that other people should strive for. See Arcane and Spiderverse being brought up in basically every conversation around this as a positive example. Obviously it's a big world, so there's always going to be ones who hold unpopular opinions but this is usually what happens.
Not really. Back then everyone accepted diversity. Everyone loved Static Shock, nobody had an issue with them changing Nick Fury to being black, and everyone loved John Stuart in JL and JLU even tho Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan are considered more of a protagonist than John. The problem with "wokeness" nowadays is that they're are doing it for the sake of pushing an agenda and they act like nobody liked "minorities" in the main role when that's 100% not true, same with the stupid notion that people never liked "strong female characters" before when Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley exist
Well I’ve always thought people were hypocritical about race swapping because both Kang and the High Evaluationary were white in the comics, but when they race swapped them for the movies nobody cared The reason I feel people might still be negative towards even a diverse character done right is because I feel that people these days on all sides are overly senitive, because there are so many things that were made before all this chaos started occurring that some people still like, the main example I can think off the top of my head is The Boondocks. Also the term “Woke” is used in such a negative when talking about diversity done wrong as if being it is bad, when all it means is just being awake and aware of injustices,
It's a shame marvel thought miles morales had to ride on petter parkers coat tales to be a successful Spiderman. It's honestly a disservice to miles, not giving him his own identity as a super hero.

9:06 This is one of the reasons why I'm glad Disney didn't really make Miles Morales they kind of out Branch or got a new generation team to make the spider verse movie ain't no way this is the Disney Original producers in stuff because it was too in-depth into open-world yet it was easy to digest and taken at once like I've only seen the new Spider-Man spider verse movie once and I still remember most of the moments like the most epic moment was the one at the end I think I like that version better than the main version of MM because he got a much cooler look and he leaned nemurin to his Spanish Heritage with his choice of style💯😎😎😎😎
I would've gladly taken these two (who I wholeheartedly believe we're created to enrage people by a troll in the department) and the big girl, to get teen morbius. That design Was sick.
As a black man idc about diversity it's been around since B&W depending on the show/movies your watching, i don't think I've heard anyone used the term diversity or representation during the early 2000s. IDK, I just dont want hear how diverse something is I'd rather them show me rather than tell me.
diversity in fiction is fine if done right. i really like how theyve went about writing miles morales in the spider verse movies. theyve taken his character from the comics and added quite a bit. hes more than just the new spider man now. hes his own character. i still prefer spider man 2099 as my definitive spider man. miguel is my favorite interpretation of spidey. another good example of diversity done right i think is the mcu version of black panther. i know, his movie was all about him and wakanda, but i mainly meant the character in general, not his specific movie. civil war, infinity war, and endgame all had decent appearances from the black panther. rip chadwick.
At 2:27 this guy NasuPrime won me over. I agree in this statement 100% and feel that it is why big companies do this. I find race changes are typically used more to build visibility through fan backlash than to make any kind of statement or better the world, story, or character. It also doesn't do anything to help those things, only resulting in the character looking different or making a "black joke", minimizing the race to a wearable "skin" in a fighting game. It's pointless. But you know what's not pointless? Using the character from the comics. Give Nubia some screen time in a Wonder Woman movie (Wondy has some of the strongest women supporting characters in comics and barely any of them have seen adaptation. It's so frustrating), how about instead of fighting over John or Hal for a Green Lantern movie we have a buddy team up, the Flash's boss is gay and gets married to one of his former villains. There is a ton of diversity in comics, it's just that those characters are ignored for adaptation. Personally, I want to see a Northstar miniseries about him taking care of his mentally ill sister while struggling with how he feels he shouldn't be happy due to his past as a violent extremest which is slowly being worked through by his supportive boyfriend, based on the 1979 Alpha Flight comics. That could be a companion series to Shaman, a show about an Indigenous Canadian surgeon whose wife died under his care, leading to his relationship with his daughter falling apart and him becoming a recluse in the Canadian mountains. Feeling lost, and being an awkward man who has trouble with relationships, he tries to find peace in his "grandfathers ways" and while looking through his grandfathers stuff he makes contact with the gods of their religion who give him a purpose in life and teach him magic. His purpose would be to raise the Snowbird, a half god and half human child, as she rapidly ages to adulthood and prepares to destroy several giant spirits prophesied to destroy the world. In reconnecting with his culture (ish. It could be more of a focus in a series than it was in the comics) and raising this child, he could find the truth in himself and make the first step in reconnecting with his daughter. Now here's my barely related tangent on cool Superman supporting characters: Superman has a character named Ron Torupe, a young black man who was turned down for a job at the Daily Planet, proved his skills by working for a competitor, got the job he wanted when Perry White regained control of the company and sought him out personally, WROTE CLARK KENTS OBITUARY after the Doomsday fight as one fo his first assignments, broke the Return of Superman story, discovered the new Supermen was a fake, shadowed Clark when he came back and took over Jimmy's role as young partner to Superman (but adding his own spin since he wanted to be a reporter due to his idolization of Clark and desire to make his own path, not a photographer who wanted to prove himself to Perry), married Lois' sister Lucy and had a kid with her all while her military dad fumed about it, went on sabbatical, got 6 degrees, and returned to take the position of the Daily Planet's political analyst by breaking a massive scandal. This character could easily be dropped into ANY Superman adaptation, but no. They'd rather dip Jimmy in some brown paint and call it a day. Also, Steel. An ex-weapons maker turned construction worker after he was forced out. Superman hangs out with construction workers sometimes while flying around and sometimes delivers them food. He saved John Irons life one day and the guy became a fan, and soon a friend. When Superman was killed by Doomsday John was buried under a falling building. He dug himself out with his bare hands, walked to the hospital, and checked himself in. When a car full of thugs using a gun based on one of his old models nearly killed a few kids he was looking after, he chased the car down on foot, vaulted overtop of it, knocked out the shooters, and CAUGHT THE CAR, before being pinned to a brick wall by the car. He spent around a week in the hospital and as soon as he felt up to it he went to confront the gang that stole his work. Since asking the leader (The White Rabbit) to stop and being sent away, he made a Superman Suit in his garage. This thing is basically Thor as an Iron-Man costume. He slaps a Superman logo on the chest to honour his fallen friend and take on his mission. Let's not forget that Black Lightning lives just down the street in Southside (nicknamed the Suicide Slums by its residents), a part of Metropolis comparable to Gotham due top the homelessness, gang violence, and radiating magic that makes it more difficult for Superman to work there. Guy's a medal wearing former Olympic athlete who came back to the slums as a teacher to inspire the next generation and help them achieve their dreams, only to find out the first kid he was making progress with was run over and stuffed into a basketball hoop by the local 100 Gang in retribution. Not wanting to put his kids in danger, but unable to make any progress with the 100 pushing them into drug dealing, prostitution, and any other racket they could, he asks a childhood friend (who is a tailor, but secretly was a spy who also had some crazy tech skills) to suit him up with a costume that had tasers in the fists so he could pretend to be a metahuman and take down the 100 without risking his students. Turns out he's actually a meta and has been slowly absorbing the electricity from the tasers over a few months. Soon he realizes eh has electrokinesis and gets an upgrade from the tailor. He wrecks the 100 and settles down for a bit, raising 2 kids who also gain powers (just not before joining Batman's Outsiders, the Justice League and being a badass hero who took on Superman before realizing he had powers).

Just don’t change Peter Parker.”
This statement and the meaning behind it, was the reason i was disappointed that they race swapped Jessica in Spiderverse (also she is a terrible mother. That baby gonna have so much brain damage) (and i know this can just be another version of her who is black. Just dont know why they didnt just go for her original look as her first appearance in the movie)
Now the issue is, should they.
Should they do that? If everyone is spiderman then what's so special about spiderman.

Remember, if you're gonna write a character, what matters is how compelling they are. If you're gonna do diversity, do it right.

I'd like to point out that while Miles is good in the games and the movies, he was quite literally created just to be "black Spider-Man" and nothing more, since his inception in the comics.
I mentioned this too in my comment, animated/film adaptations sometimes improve the original work.
What’s funny is in one of his comics, he directly says he doesn’t want to JUST be ‘black Spider-Man’ after watching some nutter influencer screaming about how she saw his black skin when his suit got torn in a fight.
But unlike these characters that are simply "black X," they actually wrote Miles to be believable.

@@mangamandrew
I don't disagree especially with Princess and the Frog vs Ariel...
@@mangamandrew
Lol another comment I just read, they didn't make Nick Fury black... they made him Samuel L Jackson YES lol.

Talk no Jutsu is talking to a villain while empowered by plot.
@@serienzp But that is never how people use it, if the hero talks to the villain no matter what, it’s seen as talk no jutsu.

8:55 Damn even the actor she would run in the role with had to make a funny face I know that wasn't part of the script but it's just something that was put in there and Disney just roll with it💯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

In Ms Marvels defense, still a better show than She Hulk
That’s not much of an achievement. That’s like saying stepping in shit with your shoe on is better than stepping in shit barefoot.
@The-X-Territory which it is not gonna lie.

Static shock was a cool hero.
I find it amusing how Overwatch is all about "representashun", while TF2 fans just enjoy the funny mercenaries killing each other over gravel.
As a fan of ms. marvel I thought it was ok not as good as the comics but it felt like a good 70% of the people working on it new the source material and mainly it was the higher ups that messed with it😅

this is the preoduct of writers and ´producers that would not watch a piece of media because of the identity of the character. they think thats how the world works so they write in a way only someone of their preferred ethnicity can enjoy
Bro nobody is thinking "I'm not gonna watch this movie because there's too many northern Europeans in it", get your head out of your ass. It's simply "hey broader representation could make a broader group of people happy"
I honestly agree... except I would use "target ethnicity" rather than "preferred ethnicity." It plays into marketing a lot.
@ericc5464 to be honest, i was struggling to find the right words. That would be a better phrasing
@FireGlitch i think the operative word in the first part is "have" its not an issue or representation being in the movie its an issue of it being mandated or a forceful implant in the story isntead of a natural part of the flow of the story. On top of my head great movies shows with great representation: price of egypt, the breadwinner, saludos amigos, the book of life, klaus, mib the series, extreme ghostbusters and x men
The did MJ race swap right tho. Like Miles. Not Mary Jane Zendaya is Michel Jones. A diffrent person Spiderman in spide verse
Never once have I watched a show and thought "OMG that main character is white just like me! What a great show!"
More like "Wow, this guy is a moron, this show is stupid... but at least the villains are awesome and the chicks are hot."
Miles morales isn’t his own character. Peter Parker in the ultimate universe dies and mile morales just takes his place.
He starts dating oh Mary Jane and visiting aunt may….

It can be done right
13:55 So funny story.

Blizzard be like "Straight white cis-men are OP, you need to balance things out."
As for Miles though... it might be an unpopular opinion, but I just cannot warm up to him.
Stan Lee said it best about the Spider-Man suit
He could be anyone under there, so it's very easy to picture yourself as Spider-Man
Growing up Mexican in the 80s/90s the only superhero cartoon out at the time was Zorro(who is actually Spanish) and I know there are other Latino characters in both marvel and dc, but none of them are even close to the level of the big names of each franchise and as much as I wanted to see something like that I didn't want something lazy like a character taking on the mantle of another established hero or joining a corp of powerful individuals and definitely not something like race swapping, I wanted someone to take the time to create a character people would care about and look up to who just happened to be Latino whose culture influenced and not defined them.
Just to clarify, I am Mexican, Latino (never latinx, white labels) my dad asked me “if Black panther is so great and sees his fellow people suffering in the oppressive American landscape why doesn’t he spirit away his people to Wakanda?”
Black Panther is a mediocre movie in general in my opinion.
That’s what the villain tried to do lol
I miss ginger characters. They even made kyle from south park black.

The black Nick Fury is a Jr. That's what is says in the Marvel Handbooks. He is not the same character as the white Nick Fury.
I only knew about White Nick Fury from the X-Men cartoons. It confused me a bit because I only knew the Black version of Fury.
That's why the best spiderman till this day is The Emissary From Hell, Supaidaman
I have a sneaky feeling that even when a character is done right there will still be people that bashed them with “This character’s woke!”
Well I’ve always thought people were hypocritical about race swapping because both Kang and the High Evaluationary were white in the comics, but when they race swapped them for the movies nobody cared
The reason I feel people might still be negative towards even a diverse character done right is because I feel that people these days on all sides are overly senitive, because there are so many things that were made before all this chaos started occurring that some people still like, the main example I can think off the top of my head is The Boondocks.
Also the term “Woke” is used in such a negative when talking about diversity done wrong as if being it is bad, when all it means is just being awake and aware of injustices,
Bruh the comments below got it

The way I see it. If People make a character and the focus on that character is race, sex, and or sexual preference then your already on a bad start.

11:30 Stop doing bad things
I have lost track of how many shows use that trope
(Bleep) your phony-baloney representation! DX
You don't represent me! I represent me! DX
Now here's my barely related tangent on cool Superman supporting characters:
Superman has a character named Ron Torupe, a young black man who was turned down for a job at the Daily Planet, proved his skills by working for a competitor, got the job he wanted when Perry White regained control of the company and sought him out personally, WROTE CLARK KENTS OBITUARY after the Doomsday fight as one fo his first assignments, broke the Return of Superman story, discovered the new Supermen was a fake, shadowed Clark when he came back and took over Jimmy's role as young partner to Superman (but adding his own spin since he wanted to be a reporter due to his idolization of Clark and desire to make his own path, not a photographer who wanted to prove himself to Perry), married Lois' sister Lucy and had a kid with her all while her military dad fumed about it, went on sabbatical, got 6 degrees, and returned to take the position of the Daily Planet's political analyst by breaking a massive scandal.
This was a lot of writing , considering I was only 3 minutes into the video...
