I spent 10 nights sleeping inside a Cheetah enclosure with two adults; setting up camp inside a concrete box in their territory. This was an experiment to see how Cheetah behavior differs from daylight activities and it turned out as one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I hope to make people rethink all their preconceptions about Cheetahs with my overall efforts. Things they won't read in a book, or see visiting a zoo, or watching on Nature Programs like Nat Geo Wild. It will take years.
These two females were bred and hand raised at this Cheetah Breeding facility called Cheetah Experience in South Africa. I spent four days getting to know them first and letting them get to know me before spending any nights inside their concrete Cheetah box. They were surprisingly nice; even more so at night than during the day. Cheetahs are diurnal rather than nocturnal which means they hunt during the day rather than night. As a result, their moods were relaxed. Their thoughts were not about food or hunger, but relaxation and rest.
In this episode, I showcase some of their repetitive behaviors these two amazing Cheetahs did every night. I include behavior like Eden's insistent and addictive grooming, love biting, snuggling and cuddling, purring, how they positioned themselves around me every time, nibbling, biting, chewing my ear and sucking my thumb and how they began treating me exactly like I was another Cheetah but with a higher level of trust and respect.
Both Cheetahs behaved the same way (in their own way) every night. Eden would insist on grooming me while Faith just liked to snuggle up close to me. Both spent the first 20 minutes grooming, purring, nibbling, biting, and then Eden would grab something to pacify herself to sleep.
Grooming is a very social thing Cheetahs do and it serves to not only clean up fur, but spread their scent on you so that you become their property. When they groom you, they are saying hey, look at him/her... I'm proud to let the world know that you belong to me.
Grooming definitely gives them pleasure. These two love it and Eden is addicted to it. I let them groom me because they liked it so much and it helped in my relationship with them. Cheetahs and cats prefer grooming hair. But their sharp spined tongues hurt bad enough to make me bleed. Trying to block Eden with my hands had limited effect as she would push my hands out of the way to get to my scalp.
Eden also liked love biting and I show her ear nibbling fetish she has. She stops purring and begins biting my ear, raking it with her teeth! It hurt but not as bad as her tongue grooming. I finally figured out to let her pacify herself to calm her down with my thumb. She also would bite my arm and hand and hold it while purring herself to contentment. They both behaved very much like domesticated cats because they do this as well.
On the final episode of Sleeping Inside A Cheetah Enclosure, I show more interesting behavior to include jealousy, night hunting, more purring, biting, sleeping, and my conclusions about all of it and why I think they behaved the way they did. I was a center of their attention and I reveal why I think that was.

Absolutely love this series of videos. What an incredible relationship you have with these cats and the respect you show for them. Awesome. In regards to the affectionate, but painful, grooming - could you have worn a balaclava to protect your skin at night?
I thought about wearing something to protect my scalp, but nothing would be the same. They would rip it off, might come apart and swallow fibers, and play with it. They lick HARD, putting their neck in it. It would come off I'm sure.Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the videos!

HA, there are exceptional hair transplant operations now, but I am not that vain, even for the cheetahs I love. If I get more involved with cheetahs, perhaps I will design a furred headdress so I can allow them to groom, which they seem to love so much.
Maybe he meant that you could give them your arm to lick, instead of your head. I was thinking I would have to try that, if I were having this problem.
But it would hurt on the arm too. I guess a person would have to have really THICK hair someplace in order to allow them to groom without any need for interference.

I love Eden but Faith conquered my heart with the way she holds her tail.
My mom had a cat that liked to suck on her earlobe once, and it was definitely a kitten behavior (the breeder separated him from his mother before he was fully weaned). So, I'd definitely believe that Eden's ear-nibbling is a cub thing.
Separation of wild animals from their mothers results in the same behavior, thus Eden and many other cheetahs in captivity. There are various reasons for separation but most common is abandonment, lack of milk, or sickness. I like keeping the cubs with the mothers until adulthood and my cheetah project will focus on that.
It's so much like my old cat lady! All the grooming, purring and love bites/nibbles.
But scaled up to a giant size haha!

Cats are wonderful affectionate purring grooming nibbling cuddling laying on you beings... if they love you. It's a nice feeling.

+Michael Snyder It's incomprehensible to me that someone could kill something as wonderful and unique as this cheetah. I hope to change those peoples minds when they watch these videos. Many more are to come to prove it's not some smoke and mirrors scheme. These animals have true feelings and personalities and can set aside their instincts to become social with you.

+max ferreiro Thanks! These animals REALLY enjoy company and attention. The key is letting them decide when and where. I try not to invade their space but rather let them come to me. That is when you know they want company. It is like human enrichment for these captive, tamed, endangered breeding big cats.

Ahhh you love cats... and cheetahs. You don't get this kind of cuddling and loving from the leopards, lions, or tigers. Maybe in some respects from lions that you raised. Bu most have their own way, but the cheetahs are much more like house cats than any other big cat. Very affectionate and lovable. Key is to let them decide... never force them. They are independent most times and want left alone, but when they want attention, it's magic.
I've always had a love for cheetahs and have always wanted to watch and get to know more about them. I've watched your videos over and over again for years now I wish to he like you and get to watch and learn also teach others about how cheetahs are and how they act to those that want to do the same and those that want to know more about them. I think Eden was only love grooming as she she also does to her other friend

I go to www.runningwildconservation.org and they have a nice program for training cheetahs to hunt for themselves and release. You get to help train them! as well as care and enrich their lives.

I let them groom me because they love it. You make friends with a cheetah who you allow to groom you.

I'm so jealous of you! I know Eden and faith could still hurt you badly at any point without meaning too, but still. It seems like it was a wonderful experience to learn more about these beautiful cats!
Also, what did you study in university/college? Just wondering because even if I never sleep in a cheetah enclosure, your job seems pretty amazing! Spending time with so many animals!
They are adorable but they can and do hurt me occassionaly and truly not mean to. They are weapons and when you play with them, you get hurt. I'be been run over at 35mph by Eden while I was sleeping outside with them in their enclosure. I felt four paws slap my @ss at high velocity and it woke me up in a terror. Eden had darted overtop of me and used me like a rock. I got a bad bruise.
I only volunteer about 6 weeks in a year but enjoy evey minute. One day, once I've learned what it takes to manage and raise cheetahs, I'll be doing the same. I'm learning all the mistakes and successes and collecting them to make a better plan.

+Trevor S Super glad you discovered my Channel and my passion for Cheetahs. I have lost all fear of Cheetahs after working with them. I respect them but still learning their behaviors. I don't do this full time as I am a volunteer but am PASSIOANTE about animals and will try things most would not so I can learn from them.
They're tongues have 100s of large backward pointing barbs that are like fingernails and cut into you every time they lick you.... and they LOVE to lick you. Grooming is their favorite thing to do, most of the tamed ones.

i laughed until losing my breath as I had two cats who showed the same behavior....some nights were hard while being hit by a love attack at 3 AM...Happily for you they do not knead also. Amazing videos many thanks to share it with us.
I'd be scared that the liking making your skin blead would make them get carried away and agressive. But wow they are beautiful and a huge similarity to the behaviour of my house cat😊.💖
Yeah, they do make me bleed sometimes, but it has zero affect on their behavior. That is because these animals have a sense of famliy, friendship and love. They love me.

+minibus1351 YUP... they were the same every night and day and very cute. I think I spent about 13 nights with them in total and they became super relaxed with me. I could wrap my arms around both of them like I was not there. They really trusted me and I learned to trust them. It was a fantastic experience I'll never forget. Thanks for watching.

watching you with the cheetahs is relaxing, how did you come to know cheetah's so well?
hello! Glad you enjoy the videos. The main reason I come to know and these cheetahs so well is that I lost ALL fear of them. That was thanks to Gabriel the cheetah when he was 10 months old who kept coming to me for attention, play, grooming and purring.
I learned that most of these cheetahs are non aggressive and don't see people as prey or the enemy and actually enjoy interaction. Even the wild ones will run away from you rather than combat. The tamed ones love attention and very friendly. Some more than others and I learned who the most friendly were and can relax just about totally around them.
I'm convinced that cheetahs are the most affectionate feline species
Most all the wild lesser cats are this way. I think it is because they cannot be aggressive to larger predators and die. Be afraid like they are but nice and good tempered and survive. But I've seen male on male cheetah aggression and they would kill each other and not worry about pain or injury. Even some male on female aggression.
I would be too terrified to do this.

While they are to some extent "wild" they are accustomed to people around them a lot and they're not nearly as aggressive as larger cats. I had 2 cats until a few years ago, when they got cancer and eventually I had both put to sleep, as I couldn't take them being in so pain. They were also prone to do a lot of grooming. Their tongues wern't painful, so it didn't bother me much. I have always loved the big cats. Primarily the tigers, leopards, and the cheetahs. They are similar to house cats in many ways, on a much larger scale.They are some of the most beautiful animals in the world, as far as I'm concerned.
Me too... I've fallen love with cheetahs because of their 'house cat' temperament and non aggressiveness. You can become close with tamed ones even when they barley know you. I was pleasantly surprised. Tamed leopards are similar but you have to watch their ambush style play ALL THE TIME. But not all. Some tamed leopards are completely trusted like Aurora at this breeding center. I have video of her on my channel. I think the cheetah hurts worse in the groom dept. I've bled from cheetah grooming but just hurt when leopards do.
I've only owned one cat in my life.. a very wild stray I tamed to keep rodents down (that worked). Took 4 months to be able to touch it and 6 to pick it up.
My take away: never forget the hoodie

something i wondered after a few videos of yours: do those cheetahs have the same hunting instinct as some other bigcats even if they are domesticated? i mean those instincts that kick in when you turn your back on them or if you run away from them, that sort of things
raver377 instincts yes, but much controlled bAsed on their relationship with you. Their temperament, and size of the person. There are many more factors in seeing instinctive actions against you but I find if you respect them, they are mostly harmless.
The purring is the best indicator of mood and when they pure. They won't become aggressive in my experience. But you MUST respect them!
