Hi and a great an informative video. I’m in south eastern PA and like you said temps don’t typically go below 0. Typically high teens - upper 20’s often times with wind chill. I watched your video actually a couple times. What do you recommend as the bare minimum to take me into early to late season temps from base layer on up to maybe a soft shell to protect from the wind. Thanks!
I’m making a video on this topic, actually. Personally, I think there are several pieces First Lite makes that are head and shoulders above competitors (which I would buy) and others that you can find cheaper than first lite without compromising too much quality. IMO their base layers the best out there. I’d go with the wick (hoody or long sleeve crew). Furnace long Johns are awesome, The Source Jacket is a heck of a piece, and the Solitude Kit is also great. That would be the foundation of my bare bones kit. The Wick/Source/Solitude combo is incredibly warm and will cover you into the 20’s. Things like Grid Fleece mid layers and field pants are found cheaper elsewhere. The Base II fleece from Condor is like $30 and does the job. I would go cheap on Fleece, personally. I still prefer PrAna Zion/Brion over any hunting pants on the market even though first lite makes some good ones too. You’ll pay less than half the price for PrAna Zion that you would for First Lite Corrugates and they go on sale for $50-$60 regularly. Hopefully that’s helpful
I also hunt Central NY and FL has been a game changer. The Woodbury jacket is 🔥late season for sure. I mix FL and Sitka but FL is the mainstay and easily market the best base layers
Great review. How do you like the Specter pattern? Do you think it works well in PA hardwoods? How much money do you have invested in your FL gear and do you think it will last? Thanks from Venango County.
Appreciate the feedback! I love the pattern personally, I think it’s similar to Fusion but slightly improved for hardwood environments. It’s incredible for Turkey hunting, too. Very versatile. I have accumulated my First Lite gear slowly over the course of 5+ years of buying and selling other stuff as well as some gifts, so I haven’t calculated how much I’ve spent. It’s certainly a decent amount. They do sales frequently enough that you can get good value if you’re patient. I fully expect the outerwear to last decades, and the wool 5+ years at least. I tend to baby my gear as much as possible, but we all know things happen when you’re hunting.
Fellow Pennsylvanian here.....Just ordered the catalyst system to go with my already owned Klamath Hoody, Wick hoody and Obsidian Foundry pants. I also ordered the kiln base layers. Im hoping ill be able to get down to the mid 30s with this set up. I may have to order the furnace base layers later.
NIce! I think you'll be happy with it. That setup might be a touch cool for freezing and below, but mid thirties and up should be perfect. I throw a down vest under my jacket for some wind protection and extra warmth below mid thirties and that seems to make a big difference.
Anyone looking to purchase some new gear for hunting watch this clip. Galin does a great job of breaking down a simple yet effective hunting system. I have been running the Sitka fanatic line for PA hunting but have been adding some FL gear as their clothes seems to be lighter and I personally like the camo pattern better for hunting in PA and MD. Great job Galin on your review and sharing your thoughts.~ Darrin
Nice breakdown man... I have just started building my FL system for S. MN.. right now I have the Sanctuary Bibs, Talus Gloves, and the Tundra Balaclava... my next few pieces are going to be the corrugate guide pant as the go to hunting pant spring turky - Late deer (ends Dec. 31st) as well as some base layers. Currently use Under Armor 4.0 as my base layer but going to go up to the merino stuff.... build from there.. thanks again.. super helpful breakdown
Planning on doing an updated video shortly. It’s changed a bit just because they’ve release some new items. I’m using the whitetail catalyst kit with the solitude vest for the October to early November time period this season.
Hey, for your winter set you are using the cold weather socks? What do you use for boots? My mucks paired with those socks haven’t been doing it. Appreciate the feedback 🤘
I use First Lites cold weather socks or alpaca wool socks, and Military Surplus “Mickey Mouse Boots” ...the black ones. They’re the only boots that keep my feet warm. They’re killer and only 60-100 bucks depending where you buy them. I’ll be doing a video on that shortly. Thanks for watching!
I’m with you know matter what socks I wear in my Mucks my feet get cold. I bought a pair of Baffin Boots “IMPACT” model and they are incredibly warm. I wear a 10 1/2 and needed a size 12. Galin great video I own a few First Lite pieces and love them. I’ll be buying some more soon enough
Nice review! I hunt in California and Minnesota and I am able to use 1 system like this for 90 degrees in California Spring and Summer all the way down to below zero for whitetail rifle season in Nothern Minnesota. I'm set up the same way with a small tote that holds the whole set up in my laundry room until I need it.
Hey Galin! Just a follow up question.. do you think that you could sit in the furnace long Johns/Furnace Henley with Solitude Bibs/Jacket only and stay comfortable in 30-40 degree temps with those 4 pieces only? Just wanted to see how you liked the solitude set and furnace layers. Thanks!
Galin, I currently live and hunt in Central Wisconsin where the temps can fluctuate drastically. I currently use the Whick, Furnace, Klamath, and Catalyst for my top in which I am comfortable down to 30 degrees. For the bottom I run the Whick boxers, furnace, catalyst, and sanctuary bib. Do you feel I would be able to get away with running the solitude for the duration of the season, or should I purchase the sanctuary jacket? Thanks
I think you could probably get by with the Solitude, and that kit will provide much more versatility than the Sanctuary. Obviously, you'd have to layer under it more than the Sanctuary, but if you can take the Catalyst down to 30 with layers, the Solitude would be great for lower temps for sure. Hopefully that's helpful!
Thank you for the great video. I think you have me sold on the wick and furnace pieces, along with the corrugate guide pants. Do you think there is a place for the fuse and kiln pieces? I mainly whitetail, tree stand hunt at the moment. I’m going firstlite for my baselayer setup
Shaun Stein the fuse and kiln pieces could be swapped out to replace the wick/Klamath pieces. Just some variability in weights and materials for different situations. For me, the wick and furnace get the job done really well! Thanks for watching!
So I have the fuse and furnace tops and bottoms, solitude bib and jacket is on the way. Looking to add a lighter jacket as a early/mid season jacket and also a mid layer if need be. Between the klamath, catalyst and sawtooth jacket what do you think?
melvin sacromentoe melvin sacromentoe It really depends what you want it to do with it. If you want it to be an outerwear piece that offers great weather protection for mid season whitetail and even turkey hunts, the Catalyst is probably your best bet. If you want it to fit into a system more effectively and be a layer that can be a mid layer or an outer piece that’s in your system for almost the whole season, the sawtooth is a tough piece to ignore. The Sawtooth is more of a hoody than a jacket in my mind, but it definitely offers more versatility because it blocks some wind but also works really well as a mid-layer for whitetail systems, but obviously it’s partially wool so it’s not going to offer the same weather protection as the Catalyst Jacket. I personally wouldn’t use the Catalyst jacket as a mid layer, but that’s just how I use it. The Klamath May be a little bit redundant if you have the Furnace already, so I might go for one of the two I mentioned above. Hopefully that helps!
Im looking to get a piece of first lite trying to decide between the Klamath hoody and the kiln hoody which im not sure if you have any experience with. I hunt with a sweatshirt and a vest in early season here in Michigan wondering if you could possibly give me a recommendation on which one to get.
Personally, I think you should always build a system from the inside out- So I'd start with base layers- some version of the Wick or fuse weight top (hoodie, crew, or QZ version will all do), the Corrugate Guide Pants on the bottom, and the Tag Cuff Beanie as an accessory. I basically use all three of those Every single time I'm in the field. Super versatile. After that, the Klamath Hoodie and Sawtooth vest would come next. All super versatile and not too expensive. Build it slowly, it's a lot more financially manageable that way.
Galin that was a awesome breakdown of your gear. I am building a complete kit myself. I’m interested if you have had a chance to test the solitude kit and what temp ranges you think that is suited for. Do you still think you can take it to 0 degrees?
Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words. With the right layers I don’t have a doubt you could push 0 degrees with the Solitude Kit. I had it out a few times this fall with wind chills close to zero and had no issues. Definitely key to have good layers on your head for those temps obviously but I don’t notice a huge decrease in temp rating from the previous Woodbury jacket.
Great system. I have been using a Sitka system for several years, but am slowly incorporating more FL in my kit. So, you consider the furnace QZ to be warmer than the Klamath? I almost bought one during the sale earlier this week, but I thought it would be redundant. Thanks for pulling this together.
TNFishingFanatic The same basic system is definitely transferable to other brands- lots of good stuff out there these days! As for the Furnace/Klamath, I’ve definitely found the Furnace to be warmer. It’s not as breathable as the Klamath but last season I tried both under very similar conditions to see which I preferred and I definitely think the Furnace is a step up in warmth. It also layers better for me just because the hood on the Klamath tends to bunch a little bit with layers over top of it when I’m not actually wearing the hood. Thanks for watching man!
Chris 09 I like them a lot. They’re breathable and have great full length zippers for venting which is critical. Obviously if you’re hiking a long way too quickly you’ll overheat in them but I like them a lot. Perfect weight for most of the fall
Woody Ousley I like fusion but they’re both awesome! I’ve considered buying a late season kit in cipher. Honestly, I think they’re both extremely versatile and would work for a lot of situations!
Just found your channel. Thanks for the info! I’m going on my first white tail hunt in WV this December. Any suggestions for affordable kits? Can’t quite afford to spend thousands on First Lite or Kuiu.
Thanks for watching! I’d say just follow the basic principles of layering. You need a quality material next to your skin- Merino wool or a quality synthetic like poly pro. On top of that you need insulation- fleece, down, or synthetic insulation will all do, and on top of that you need some sort of weather barrier like a soft shell or wind blocking layer to keep wind and moisture out. Many companies offer all three of these layers, I’d suggest searching for used apparel on eBay if you can’t afford new, or slowly build a kit over time. Hopefully that helps!
what was wrong with the woodbury that made you go to the solitude? I dont think the side zipper access to the bibs is a good idea to keep you warm? plus no kidney pocket in the back where you can put your handwarmers.
Nothing wrong with the Woodbury at all! There is still a kidney warmer pocket in the back of the solitude. It’s far more water and wind resistant and the Kit Link side zippers have been awesome. I haven’t had issues with that preventing me from staying warm, my hands are in it 90% of the time unless I’m getting ready to shoot or glassing. When I’m glassing I just zip them back up to keep the heat in. The Woodbury is still a killer piece though, I wouldn’t upgrade unless the bibs and weather resistance fabric are important to you.
I'm 6'3 and around 180 or so (pretty skinny) and I wear a medium, their stuff tends to be intentionally cut a little bit longer which is nice. I'd think you could get by in an XL, but they do offer free returns on online purchases, so don't be afraid to try one and send it back if it doesn't fit. Thanks for watching!
How did the solitude work out for you this season? I’m also in Pa and bought the sanctuary set but now I’m thinking it might be to much and with the right layering I can use the solitude. Did you test it in any temps below 20?
Michael Ward yes! I used it the whole season from 40’s down through the teens. It’s sweetspot is probably in the mid 30’s, but with layers you can definitely get down into colder temps. If you could only pick one id personally go with the solitude kit.
Great video! Where would you use the Uncompahgre Puffy Jacket? I didn't know what it would replace in the setup you walked through and where you saw it fit.
Eric Lancaster Personally I only use the the Uncompahgre in my western hunting kit, it’s a very lightweight piece but with that comes a noisier face fabric which I don’t prefer for whitetail hunting. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your system
Sure thing! Thanks for watching. Updated video coming soon hopefully.

I appreciate the positive feedback! I'm glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. It’s helped me learn about proper layering. Making a swing from Arkansas to Montana is gonna be easier to do now.
