    City of God
    Dan Schutte
    Awake from your slumber, arise from your sleep
    A new day is dawning for all those who weep
    The people in darkness have seen a great light
    The Lord of our longing has conquered the night
    Let us build the city of God
    May our tears be turned into dancing
    For the Lord, our light and our love
    Has turned the night into day
    We're sons of the morning, we are daughters of day
    The one who has loved us has brightened our way
    Let us build the city of God
    May our tears be turned into dancing!
    For the Lord, our light and our love
    Has turned the night into day
    God is light, In him there is no darkness
    Let us walk in his light, his children one and all
    Oh comfort my people, make gentle your words
    Proclaim to my city, the day of her birth
    Let us build the city of God
    May our tears be turned into dancing
    For the Lord, our light and our love
    Has turned the night into day

    An epic favorite from the Glory and Praise parts One and Two. So many things happened at my parish during the time they rolled this out.
    For me, although Mass was always in English, 1976 changed everything from the old to the new. Our little adobe parish church was closed and a new, disco 70s church was built. No more old fashioned confessional stalls, instead we had the modern closet type with the lighted crosses over the door and a sitting area for face to face confession. That was the very confusing year for every child making their first communion. The new church had no communion rail. That was the first year children were instructed to receive communion in the hand and to receive the wine. And our old hymnals were gone and the new hymnals were the Glory and Praise books.
    My poor parents, their heads almost exploded during my sacramental prep that year. Oh! And the Act of Contrition was revised for the first time. It’s been revised again since then.
    Of all the things that changed, although I love my parish church where I made my first communion and confession, was confirmed and was married, the only part of all those changes I truly loved and still do was the Glory and Praise hymnal.
    76 was the change over year for so many things. I saw an interview with Jack White with Stephen Colbert and you can tell who is older by the fact that they didn’t recognize each other’s favorite hymns. I recognized both. lol

    Also to add, in a non-Mass setting, I've always wondered how these '80s and '90s tunes would sound with pop production. For instance, imagine City of God with horns, a la Chicago, Huey Lewis, or Earth, Wind & Fire. Christ Be Our Light, featuring Amy Grant and Twila Paris (or even Smitty and S.C. Chapman). You Are Mine's power, but with a Elton/Taupin arrangement; tons of triplets and sus chords. We Are Called, with the George Michael gospel feel of One More Try. And a rocking version of Dana Scallon's We Are One Body, featuring Foreigner/Lou Gramm (along the lines/feel of I Want To Know What Love Is).

    I am a traditionalist mostly, but at the same time, this particular song is uplifting. It and others (All Are Welcome, etc.) might not be Mass-appropriate but I listen to them while training for my marathons. All things in their proper place.

    I believe this selection has four verses... I could only discern three verses that were sung... It would be nice if the folk choir could make a video of them singing all four verses, either during a mass or not during a mass...
    This youtube video is the best rendition of this selection that I've been able to find...

    • @disneydanny2
      @disneydanny2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      they actually sang 6 verses (2 verses,chorus,2 verses, chorus, 2 verses, chorus) that's extremely rare in most churches as most don't even get to the 5th verse before they end it

    • @mortonbelcher
      @mortonbelcher 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope someone can find a way to show the choir singing *all* the verses...This selection is a very popular one, and I'm sure there will be another occasion when they sing it either before or at the end of the Mass.. Best wishes to you!

      your welcome. Steve stepped down as Director and the end of the past school year and when school resumes in August Karen will serve as both Accompanist and interim Director (although she has always been billed as Assistant Director even when she was accompanist)

    • @mortonbelcher
      @mortonbelcher 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the update! I'm sure Karen will do a good job...
      One other matter! Would you please ask the webmaster not to cut off this particular selection before the end? I think there may have been more to the video that the choir sang.
      Although I'm not Roman Catholic, (I'm Episcopalian) I really like this selection... my home church's former organist/choirmaster was Roman Catholic (unfortunately he has passed on to his reward) and the whol church was very fond of him.. He taught us this particular selection "City of God," which was well received.
      I would love to be able to watch/listen to a video of your choir from the beginning, as with this video, to the very end singing City of God...
      I have heard that a new organ is going to be installed in the chapel... That certainly is good news...
      Best,
      Morton Belcher
