It's funny how music can hit different people in different ways. I've been sort of interested in Fiona Apple - I liked her early work, and all the time I've really liked the cover songs she's done better than most of her own stuff. But now I've been going through the playlist of this album on TH-cam (cool that they made it available), and listening to it several times. It caught my attention immediately, and while I can't explain exactly why, I LOVE this album. Enough that it's going to be the first album I'm going to order a physical copy of it, with the booklet that comes along, in probably about a decade. I liked it from the start, and it's only grown on me more as I've relistened. Maybe it's those low-fi ad-hoc percussive elements (I'm a big Tom Waits fan), or that I like SOME avant garde stuff, and this seems to be just experimental enough to be interesting, while still retaining basic listenablility - add to that Fiona's textured and often raspy vocals, and it just WORKS for me.
ummm what????? It's like she skipped through the album and decided that if she used enough big words no one would notice she didn't read the assignment.
I enjoyed your comments 👍👏👏👏 Also, I think that Fiona is a poet, innovative musician and a genius. Most artists today can’t write and produce a new album without an entire team holding their hands and the record company changing everything to sell more “units”
This album is pretty intriguing (to me at least) since many audiences and critics have interpreted this album pretty differently. The way I interpreted the overall message of this album is that you have to find a way out of an abusive relationship. Regardless of how well you know ur lover. Regardless of how much gaslighting ur lover has done upon you. You need to fetch the bolt cutters out of that relationship. Pronto. Here, Fiona really lays into the fact that not every relationship would turn out the way you want it to. And by that, I mean most, if not all, relationships. There are other themes here related to abuse, such as supporting other survivors of bullying and abuse, and the way the effects of bullying and abuse can "spread" if not acknowledged and apologized for, like in the song "Relay". Considering Fiona has been a victim of domestic abuse during her childhood, I kinda see this record as being self-reflective and her most personal and intriguing record to date. The experimental use of found sounds as percussion was pretty interesting. Overall, I think this could be her best record to date, and I gotta say she definitely deserved that 10 from Pitchfork. Edit: I don't even know why I wrote this long-ass comment LMAO 😂.
This project feels like a two dollar steak. It's tough to swallow at times, but there are some bright spots namely the title track. I rewinded to 0:29 for five minutes straight and cackled more than I needed to. I agree with the points you made throughout especially the "beating dead horses" comment. Then again I haven't listened to much of Miss Apple's work besides the more "popular" cuts so my grasp is elementary at best. Great shit homegirl!
Very good analysis of this album! While I personally don’t see why some people think the album is a 10/10, the different aspects of the album you brought up made me appreciate it a little bit more for what it is.
@Mica-Spangled yeah I mean I agree with everything you just said, I didn't mean petty in a bad way, I think when you're mistreated by someone like that it's easy (and ok) for your brain to low-key feel resentful towards the unrelated parts of their life that're going well and/or them not really facing any repercussions for it. but "I resent you for being tall" is definitely a petty thing to say. I think we're on the exact same page
Great review! I love how you can always make an objective review about an album while maintaining the essence of your emotions through the musical experience. Lol from Mexico. Btw what’s your favorite Coil record?
I'm assuming you didn't really wanna listen to it then, bc nah, I actually thought about this album for an incredibly long time before making this review, as I do all my reviews. just used a few cool metaphors and big words too, cuz vocabulary excites me. idrk what the word pretentious means but people do call a lot of my heroes pretentious too so I'm not worried about it
And you actually have to respect someone's opinion for their insults to work.im going to go sit at my piano and make music instead of talking about it.Good day SIR.
If dating is a scam to you, then you're probably doing it wrong. But then again your opinion is merely only subjective. Maybe try a different approach.
ultimately you're gonna make a lot of sacrifices in a relationship but if the person's worth it to you then yes, definitely do it. I was half joking, I said it bc I'm reviewing an album by someone who comes across as sarcastic & cynical in their music too
You just casually compared Fiona Apple to kombucha and it made sense. What even are you?
I was very strongly considering blue cheese but I decided against it
brilliant review, and so adeptly well spoken. badass
"The drums are shuffled around like a bunch of knives at Hibachi grill"
Fantastic simile
i fucking love the way you construct sentences, very eloquent. good review 👍

What rating did she give this?
Gavin Levine she didn’t, she reviewed it
she said a 6/10 in reply to one of the comments on here
The last time I heard a review over an album that was as pretentiously aimless was anything Lester Bangs said about John Lennon records.
I'm assuming you didn't really wanna listen to it then, bc nah, I actually thought about this album for an incredibly long time before making this review, as I do all my reviews. just used a few cool metaphors and big words too, cuz vocabulary excites me. idrk what the word pretentious means but people do call a lot of my heroes pretentious too so I'm not worried about it
People who over think music never understood it to begin with
I agree that thinking makes you dumb
And you actually have to respect someone's opinion for their insults to work.im going to go sit at my piano and make music instead of talking about it.Good day SIR.

Hi
Omg I love you
White woman
Irish man. What's up?
Hotdog
You presumptuous girl, Fiona's albums never likes to a listener at first spin. Especially her previous Idler Wheel
I understand. They're saying that Fiona's albums don't sound awesome at first listen, but the more you listen the more you love them.
