Thank you Scott, I've been doing your continuous arpeggio exercise nearly 4 years now as a member of Scott's bass lessons, it's changed my life! WOW what it's done for my bass playing is above and beyond and it's still a monster, but I've got it, thank the maker! Everytime I pick up my bass it's my go to exercise.

Only been playing for about 10 months. So I feel like this is exactly what I need to deepen my understanding of arpeggios and exactly what I'm supposed to be doing as a bassist.
I just did the first exercise for the past two weeks and am now moving on to the next one, giving it 15 minutes every day has had enormous improvements on my improv confidence and my songwriting! Great brain twisting exercises!

Easily one of the most important lessons on here. Great as always. So many bass players don't see the music as being chord changes, they just conceptualize things as being a "bass line". I did too, and then it just dawned on me one day: Oh, my bass lines consist of 90% chord tones.. I'm just playing chords one note at a time!
The key is to write bass lines "across" the chords - I don't write music in chord changes, I write basslines that hit the right chord tones as the chords are played. The difference is you have a coherent, catchy melody that is independent of the chord progression, but does correspond with it.
I like to think about it like this: Drums set the scene and draw an outline. Guitar and keyboard color the image. Bass is like the "inker" in comics, the guy that adds the weight to the lines and the shades and shadows, the parts that add depth to an image.

You could really extend this exercise into every kind of permutation including rhythms for your knowledge of chord tones. Especially if you wanted to move into odd meters (5 notes per chord, 4 + 3 notes per chord). This is so fantastic! Even further, you could move this into musical/melodic ideas and moving through chords melodically. Glad I stumbled upon this today! :D
Around 42:50: online question "How do we know which is the lowest note?". Scott answers that there's no "fast track" to it and that you have to write down the notes of the arpeggios and then find them below the root note. That's not consistent with what he says earlier in the video: "I'm not thinking notes but intervals" (or sth along those lines). Actually, if you can visualise your 7th, 5th, 3rd BELOW the root note as well as above, you can do it without knowing the notes. For example: you want to play a a C minor arpeggio from the lowest note (C on the A string / 3rd fret), after a time, you'll know that your lowest note possible is the 5th below (E string / 3rd fret), then your minor 7th either on the E string / 6th fret or A string / 1st fret, etc. and you'll remember the "shapes". Not really a "fast track" either but easier IMHO. Good vid otherwise.
When learning all your scales and arpeggios you want to learn the note names because it is helpful for reading music and learning the fretboard. You want to think of the arpeggios in intervals as well because it's easier to think of the notes as numbers while you are actually playing a tune.

My left hand is limited after carpal tunnel and ulnar cubital release. Left arm . My use of it is limited 2 months after, it is returning but slowly. I'm 54 and been playing bass 29 years by ear and inprov, now teaching myself theory. I am frustrated but all in. Any advice about short cuts still being able to play fretless in tune???
8 months late. Play your fretted bass. Practice fretting on top of frets. That will put your fingers in the correct spot to play fretless. Then transfer over to your fretless bass
"We are preprogrammed to work roots up, arpeggios up and down".... Dude, I'm only playing ever doing this. I'm mentally a bass baby after playing for so many years 🤯🤯🤯
First part of this lesson was very helpful for me. It gave me a good understanding of the major arpeggios and the circle of fifths. From that, I feel like I can develop some good exercises, and use the arpeggios together to create basslines. However after the first part, he lost me. Scott himself looked confused as he was trying to explain the 'continuous arpeggio'. I had to just stop the lesson around the 46' mark. Scott is by far my favorite online bass teacher and I will have to come back to this lesson.
The way i try and remember is that C is the do-a-deer tune and wedding bells tune descending. Then i try and think of ... C, F(for fifths) then i think of the BEEGEE's (Bead Gee's) B flats first, E flat, A flat, D flat, G flat ....then repeated as non flats BEADG finishing in C again. So we get .... C,F BbEbAbDbGb then BEADG then C again. Just another way of sharing how i try and understand some of the terminology... lol
Very useful exercise! Gonna try this over a few months. Visualizing patterns - as you mentioned, as oppose to thinking chord notes - seem like a good tool to make it easier to find the nearest note in the next chord. It should be a matter of layering patterns over each other and see which note is the nearest. One advantage of thinking the notes, however, should be that this exercise also becomes an exercise to find the notes on the fretboard. Do you have any thoughts about the downside of thinking patterns versus to thinking in notes?
hy folks, great exercise .what I don't get 🙈 is if the choice of running the 4 notes arpeggios starting from the nearest notes from next cycle of 5th arpeggios has a specific order or not IE 5/3/1/7 [like when you move from the C major 7th 4 notes arp to the F major 7th arp] or 3/1/5/7 [when you move from the F major arp to the B flat major ] can anyone help? we don't need to realize that, because we know it. :) skills require years of practice. What matters is where to start or how do we spend those "couple of years" practicing. that's why this video is so good. Thanks to Scott.
If you wanna be good , you can't take the easy way out. I practice daily and have for many years, and I'm confident iny ability. And it came from these types of exercises. It's not easy, but it does get.easy with hard practice. People ask me all the time how I got so good..they never wanna hear the truth, and the 1000s of hours of practice. More like tens of thousands..they always want some secret, fast approach. This is the type of.exercise I point them too...I used to sit out back at the venue my band played at. And this bass player came up to me, and asked how I got so good.. I said "practice lol . If you wanna be good you gotta practice, it's that easy" . He said " how much do you practice" I said "3-4 hours average. But as much possible". He said " yea I practice 3-4 hours usually on a Saturday". I said " no , a day*...he said "what ? 3-4 hours a day?" I said. " If you wanna be good you gotta practice... guaranteed to make you a beast

Simply GREAT lesson!!! It might have helped a bit if you used a backing track for Autumn Leaves, so that we can hear the impact the different patterns you show us (continuous arpeggios, 3rd to 3rd, etc.). Anyway, we can still do that by ourselves as homework :-) Thanks again for these very helpful lessons.
