The bottom line is the guy stepped into a nearly impossible position and handled it pretty damn well! Priest without Halford is like Zeppelin without Plant, but he did fill the void while they ironed out internal termoil and kicked ass while doing so!
Halford is great and I met the dude and chatted for 20 mins - really nice guy. These are Rob's songs but I prefer Tim's voice. Rob is awesome but nasally at times. Tim is strictly clear, in control and powerful. Both singers are great.
Watched Ripper sing in front of around 300 people at a bar in Syracuse,NY like he was playing in front of this many people. Then he did a meet and greet afterwards....one of the nicest guys in metal!! What a voice!! It goes to show if you love what you do, you don't care how many people you play in front of. Ripper rules!!
Ripper could sing for any legit metal band! He's a badass that chose the wrong band. Why be compared to a top 3 Metal singer? Ozzy, Dio, Halford. Last two in any order. NO HEAVY METAL BAND COMPARES TO BLACK SABBATH!!
imagine being in his place; his favorite band asked him to be their new, albeit, temporary, lead singer. If KISS asked me to do that I'd probably have a heart attack.
Same bro. But if KISS would ask me about it I'd reject 'cause it's more satisfying to hear a plate being scratched with fork than listen to me singing lol
Filling Robs boots is a bit harder. Pulling off Robs head voice and falsetto is just not easy to do. Some tenors might struggle with his low range but many if not most baritones could hit cover his full range the hard part is controlling the pitch and transitions. If you can't your just sound awful. Tim does a really good job IMO.
All things must come to an end; eventually Rob will retire, n Ripper will sing for Judas Priest again! Tim n Ritchie will be the main guys taking Metal forward forever! 🤘🏻
I was there, and there is no production wizardry in this recording, it was just brutal sound quality that night. Such a world apart from sound in the 80s in the marquee club which left your ears ringing for a week. None of that at that Priest gig, just sheer power. Only bettered I think by Heaven and Hell at the NEC. I haven’t been to a gig since, maybe they’re all that good now but I can’t imagine how it could get any better than that night in 2007, every part of your body was resonating, including the scalp! Again, no ringing ears though, just sheer power. Nothing will live up to those nights again now these masters are all sadly moving on.
Saw Tim in his solo career a few years ago. I was right at the pit. What impressed me the most was a huge and loud scream he gave out of the mic - one of those singers use to "clean up the throat" in the beginning of the set. I could hear it perfectly and loud even standing some 10/15 meters from him - or even more. Oh and with the whole band playing like hell. To this day I am yet to see something as impressive from a singer. The guy is a legend.
a custom ESP V guitar. Theres a EMG-81 in the bridge position, and im GUESSING a Seymor Duncan at the neck position, adds an EMG-81 later on. A Kahler tremolo bridge. Very nice guitar
One of the best metal songs ever made and Ripper is doing a great job on this! What makes this son so great is how the arrangement follows the lyrics on this song, it actually feels like the song is going 200 miles per hour and it is very innovative with the Glens use of guitar synth and very clever solo along with Robs and on this version, Rippers use of their rnage on vocals.
Man I would dig having Ripper Owns vocal my band. He's got that low key that hovers inbetween the bright punkish brit metal and the deeper American thrash metal growl. Man the flexibility one could have in the song writer with that diversity.
I have to admit that I like this version more than that one, filmed during the ,,Fuel for Life" tour 1986/87. Yes, we don't have the Metal God here or Dave Holland's simple and minimalistic drum skills, but... OMG, Tim Owens makes an awesome job, be in contact with the audience and looking like an outlaw with all the tattoos and the metal jacket, every drum hit from Scott Travis is a punch in your guts, the tuned down key sounds really badass (esp. w/the synths), the band looks like a dungeons and dragons LARP with these Demolition era clothes AND Ian Hill, barely present on the pre-Painkiller footage shows more movement and energy on stage than usual!!!! 💥
Come on people don't compare ripper with halford both are great but halford has something that is unquestionable... He is the original member of JP and also he built so many years with the band. In live performances ripper has that sounds better with him than any other singer. Halford had a blast in live performances in the resurrection years and for me was his last. Try to enjoy them instead on compare and trowing shit all the time... Most of us we're just fans below this guys... And if you don't like them look for something else but show some respect.
I totally agree its just like when Bruce Dickenson left Iron Maiden & Blaze Baily came in & did a great job but you can't compare the two. Bruce built up a huge legacy with Maiden before hand & is back now & just as strong. but blaze did a heck of a job I think, imagine filling those shoes just like ripper did for rob halford. I love sign of the cross by Iron Maiden & blaze baily incredible song just like ripper & priest with burn in hell
They knew replacing Rob would be an incredible task but any singer would have jumped at it. Kiddos to Ripper for flying the flag for Priest. I just wish they would have him at the Rock and roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at least at the table with them.
@@Hammerhead547 I think it was unprofessional not to stop the song and start over or like you said to over dub it in the final mix and put the camera angle elsewhere during the mistake.
Ripper Owens was incredible fronting Priest, but it’s undeniable that the Judas Priest fans wanted was Rob Halford, which is understandable because that’s the Judas Priest they know and grew up with.
Dude needs a teleprompter. Isn't it hilarious that they made this a live album? Tim helped Priest remain relevant, but he also disclosed that he focuses so hard on trying to get the vocals right that he forgets the lyrics.
No, Downing is using a Duncan in the bridge position of one of his black ESP V's, not sure which one, but you can see it clearly on the Machine Man (Soundcheck)Video, at 2:58+ (i just now noticed). But i think its just this tour. And i believe I read somewheres that the use dual 81's.
Oh yeah, you're right. Downing uses 81/85's. I just recently saw that in the KxK Guitars website for his custom guitar. I could of swore I read 81/81 somewhere. Than again, that website said Tipton uses an acoustic Horizon guitar instead of Eclipse.
@3:22 Ripper did the song in a way that Halford has not been able to do since the reunion. And even in 1986, Halford was not consistent with that part of the song.
rippers voice is'nt as knife cutting as rob halford;and he's not brittish. otherwise good replacement. better than when blaze bailey replaced bruce dickenson for iron maiden.
Yea you are so right, the "Blaze experiment" was not a successful one in my and many others opinion. I am glad that when Bruce came back that Blaze didn't stay to sing every other verse like they did with Janick and Adrian Smith. LOL
I had not heard this before with Owen singing... I got surprise his performance it is exceptional. however I think that Halford is Judas Priest and vice-versa

Thanks Tim to saving JP. And it's a really great voice.
0:44 "Then we race together", Ripper the correct lyrics is "Then within your senses"
K.K Downing + Glenn Tipton + Tim "Ripper" Owens = Extraordinary
Is great that Judas Priest made a Live CD and Live DVD because Ripper is a damn good singer too.
Everyone needs a turbo lover
these 5 guys have the stage presence of a wingless fly. Saw them in the 80's and they KILLED it. This...wow!

Give it up for Ohio's own Ripper not easy to fill in for a rock god.
You are most likely better then Kiss.
Face it. Ripper is excellent. He saved JP, too. Much thanks.

The heaviest version of this timeless classic. It's really impressing not to see the whole stage falling down from such a shitload of power.

Love the whole show. Every song sounds so heavy. The spirit of Jugulator and Demolition.

I' know i'll never meet Ripper in my life, But I have to say: what a Great person he is! Thanks for keeping' JP alive. You're a great guy!
Turbo Lover is no glam metal song anymore if Tim sings it.
I like Jugulator.. It was Judas Priests heaviest album.
Nice cover from JP
Sé que tienen sus propios gustos, para mi el mejor vocalista de Judas Priest.
Los dos son buenos
I Love the way he sings this song. Ripper lives
The colour and tone of Halford's voice is unique. No one can immitate him.

Holy crap. This sounds so damn near like 80s Rob Halford it's uncanny!
Are you deaf or trolling? This couldn't be more unlike 80's Rob. Don't get me wrong, I like Tim's voice but what you said made no sense at all.
i have seen priest last year with halford and it was the best thingi have ever seen live...but owen also has a strong performance.
