Love the format, and I can tell you spent a ridiculous amount of time editing. You're article references, video links, and references are top notch: total respect. If you can keep it up like this, I'll be blown away. Your obsession is obvious, but this was my favorite of your videos so far
Ha. Thank you. Yes, a ridiculous amount of time is right. I do the same thing with the podcasts and articles. I've always enjoyed a good creative process. Cheers. I appreciate your support.
This might be my favorite single piece of content you’ve put out. So cool seeing how the concepts and tactics you’ve been sharing for years in articles and podcast episodes come together in a single day on the water. Seeing them integrated was so helpful. And I hope you can give yourself a pat on the back for the video quality. P.S. - I hope one day I get a dog as calm and well-behaved as River to take on the water with me. He stole the show.
Ha. Yeah, I think River will probably make it into most of these. He's a good dog. Glad this format worked for you. This first one was a little longer than I wanted, but I learned a lot in the process. Thanks again.
Love this format. It’s so helpful to learn how you shift your approach in realtime and why. Also, thanks for linking to relevant articles too. Such quality work, I really hope you keep making more of these. Thanks Troutbitten team!

My boy says to me, "We should go to that guy's river and catch some trout." We're in MD, so he'll have to settle for, "Yea maybe someday, man." Thanks for the content, Dom
I love all of the videos, but this is my favorite. Being able to watch how you approach different sections of water and hear you explain the process provides a lot of insight.
Hey Dom! I’ve been trying my hand at creating angler perspective content for the past two years. So I have an appreciation for the amount of time and planning that went into this. Fishing is hard enough. Adding the filming aspect makes it even more of a challenge. This was beautifully done.
Always a pleasure to watch a pro in action. Bonus points for originality: using the word centigram, and fishing a streamer straight upstream. Very cool.

Terrific video! If I've learned one thing from you Dom (though I've learned many), it's the importance of the right weight to get down deep, fast - and I wasn't. Thanks!
For SURE! The current trend of thin to win, lighter and longer is fine when it works. But if trout aren't eating on the drop and/or up and out of the strike zone, then the majority of your drift is just wasted time, as you wait for the fly to finally get to a depth where fish can eat it. Everything works sometimes.
Wow I got chills watching this- the favorite stretch of my favorite river where I learned how to nymph using the mono rig thanks to reading your articles. @@Troutbitten the funny thing is, I think the nature of the video highlights what might be the most important lesson - learn to love rigging. I took my son out this morning and we both get too focused on trying to “make it work” with whatever we have rigged up. Whereas if we rigged up for what the water is giving us we undoubtedly would have caught 4x more fish and been 1/4 as frustrated 😆
Well done, Dom. Really like getting to see how you work. This helps me visualize the concepts (e.g., tight line nymphing) you write and speak about on the podcasts. Keep it up!

Wow, this is amazing! All I watch on TH-cam is fly fishing and motorcycles. This is probably the best fishing video on here. River is an amazing dog! Can't believe how he's trained. You've got to do an article on how you trained him. I have 4 dogs, but I couldn't fish with any of them. All I would get to do is chase dogs! Lol Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I learned alot too.. Reading only gets me so far I have to see it to truly learn it..
Alright! Thanks very much. Yeah, River is easy. He's the second good fishing dog I've had. Here's an article about my fishing dogs. troutbitten.com/2021/08/11/my-fishing-dogs/ I don't go over a lot of training because I'm no expert. But there's nothing like a good fishing dog.
@Troutbitten awesome! I have registered treeing Feist ( squirrel dogs). Their balance Is unreal, but they are high strung. If a bird flies over, they will chase it! A couple of years ago, I took my mom trout fishing. On the other side of the river was a young black lab that kept pacing back and forth. About that time my Mom hooked a nice Brown, and sure enough, here came that lab! It was trying to steal her fish! She was hollering at the dog and trying to land the fish goingback and forth , I couldn't help for laughing! We finally got in in the net and here came that big wet dog ,shaking and jumping on her! It was so funny... Memories like that are never forgotten. Take good care of River, my friend, and give him a big hug from me. He's so beautiful!
I would love to hear a pod on "fishing with your dog." I am going to try taking Ellie. She's pretty obedient and would never run off but she does think that a trip to the river means plunge right in.
I've had a lot of requests for that. My hesitation is that I wouldn't encourage most people to take most dogs. A good river dog is pretty rare. Honestly, it starts with the breed.
Hello and thank you. I use split shot sometimes, and other times I use shot. There are many factors that lead me to the decision. I dropped the title of a relevant article in the video, and I'll try to keep doing that in future Fish and Film videos as well. Here's the best article on Troutbitten about this. There are more . . . troutbitten.com/2017/01/26/split-shot-vs-weighted-flies/ That'll give you a pretty in-depth answer. Cheers.
Great video Dominic, thanks. I am starting to video some of my trips with a GP !0 and was wondering if you have thought about putting a tutorial on that talks about making a vid and particularly how to use two cameras. My friends all use cameras of some sort for and none of us really know how to use them effectively ! Thanks for any help you can offer
I think that's just the action cam giving that perspective. I was within the Golden Ratio of nymphing, only one rod length over and a couple up, the whole time I was nymphing. Only exception is the one spot up against the rocks, but I mentioned that I didn't expect them to eat because it wasn't a dead drift. Remember, the rest of the footage is dry flies and streamers, and I most definitely fish up and across and at all kinds of angles with those flies. Make sense?
Great video Dom! I cant believe how chilled river is! He goin to be an awesome addition to your family! I hope to run into you on the stream one day so I can pet him? Do you still use the sage trout reel?
Thoughly enjoyable. Well done. I'm intrigued by a rod that can do everything from casting dry flies to heavy streamers and nymph rigs. What length and weight Ultralite LL is that? It looks primarily like a dry fly rod that can also fish nymphs and streamers. Or is it primarily a nymphing rod that can also cast a regular fly line? It's very versatile and you only need to carry one rod. I could use a rod like that. BTW, River is a great fishing dog!
Thanks. So there's a lot to this topic of rod selection. I've covered it well in a few other resources, and I'll leave links to those below my short answer. A good four or five weight candle do a lot. The Hardy Ultralite or the Hardy Marksman are great tools, and I wouldn't say they are a dry fly rod or a nymphing rod. They are just good fly rods. Same with the Winston Super 10 or the Orvis H3F. All of those are favorites in a ten foot four weight. Ten feet gives me the reach for tight lining, although it's not necessary. Anything longer becomes a handicap when fishing streamers the way I like to. And the truth is that most any good fly rod will cast a dry fly really well, if you have the right leader (Harvey, for example). So I choose a versatile fly rod, then I build my system around it. Most times, when fishing under the water, I choose a Standard Mono Rig. Not a Micro Mono Rig (specialized), but a tool that casts like a fly line and performs very much that way if my casting is good. That's how I get so much versatility out of one rod. You saw me change at about the halfway point of the video to a dry fly leader. It takes a couple minutes. And that Hardy casts everything beautifully, streamers included, but realize that I'm not also casting the weight of a sinking line or something. Resources: troutbitten.com/2021/09/22/the-best-fly-rods-for-the-mono-rig-and-euro-nymphing-my-favorite-rods/ troutbitten.com/recommended-gear/recommended-gear-fly-rods-and-reels/ troutbitten.com/2022/07/03/podcast-the-versatile-angler-s3-ep15/ troutbitten.com/2017/10/15/fifty-fly-fishing-tips-12-use-a-versatile-and-general-fly-rod/ That should help you out. Follow those links and then go down the rabbit hole of all the links contained therein. Have fun out there! Cheers.
Sure thing. It's a Fishpond Thunderhead Small Submersible Lumbar pack. I don't like the belt apparatus, so I just put the pack on my own belt system. Good credit to Fishpond for providing that option, as it's easily removable and can be solidly mounted to a 2" belt. Note, I use the pack for my camera and nothing else. Here's the belt system I use -- very important to me, as I carry all the heavier thing on my hips. th-cam.com/video/Y-zW_mZESUQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Troutbitten Cheers.

troutbitten.com/2021/08/11/my-fishing-dogs/
I don't go over a lot of training because I'm no expert.

Hey now!
Hey now
I would love to hear a pod on "fishing with your dog." I am going to try taking Ellie. She's pretty obedient and would never run off but she does think that a trip to the river means plunge right in.
I've had a lot of requests for that. My hesitation is that I wouldn't encourage most people to take most dogs. A good river dog is pretty rare. Honestly, it starts with the breed.
@@Troutbitten That makes total sense.
So if you had to pick you would throw split shot versus weighted flies? What distance between the nymph and the split shot? Awesome context!
Hello and thank you. I use split shot sometimes, and other times I use shot. There are many factors that lead me to the decision. I dropped the title of a relevant article in the video, and I'll try to keep doing that in future Fish and Film videos as well. Here's the best article on Troutbitten about this. There are more . . .

That'll give you a pretty in-depth answer.

Thank you for a gorgeous film Dom. You’ve trained River well. He’s a calm, sensible, worthy companion. How old is he?
Greetings from Oz.
River is three years old. He's been fishing with me since we got him as a puppy, so he knows the routine.
@@Troutbitten Thanks Dom.
Thank you. Oh boy, I'm in no position to offer much advice. I haven't been filming and editing for long!
Thanks, any hints on where I can find info on using 2 cameras. It really makes the vid a lot more interesting?
I thought you normally don't look across fish across but that's what it looked like what you did can you explain why and when we should do that
I think that's just the action cam giving that perspective. Make sense?
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that I really enjoy watching your videos and podcasts keep'em coming and tight lines
Great video Dom! I cant believe how chilled river is! He goin to be an awesome addition to your family! I hope to run into you on the stream one day so I can pet him? Do you still use the sage trout reel?
Right on. Yes, I use the Sage TROUT as well. That and the ESN are my main reels. Cheers.
I would love to know where to buy a Beautiful Pup from the breeder of your Dog. I've owned Red Merles but he is stunning. Great video Sir

@@Troutbitten 🍻 Which pool goggles do you use?

@@Troutbitten Thanks. I appreciate your reply. And I love going down rabbit holes.
Hi Dom. Can u tell me what hip pack you’re using. It looks like it is on a normal wading belt?

Thanks Dom. I really appreciate all the work you put into your articles and videos. You are an amazing speaker and I am a better fly fisherman because of it.
