Swing Your Compass Compass errors often are larger and more misleading than most pilots realize. Learn a simple and easy way to determine and eliminate compass errors.
@Brain Schiff, I have always respected your and your Father's vast knowledge of all things flying! I thought I was pretty savvy when it comes to the magnetic compass and its design and functionality. However, I have to admit that I learned so much more from watching this video from your Father! I am now vastly more informed about how to swing a compass and its design. Thank you very much for posting your Father's video!
Even today - this video is still worth watching. Of course, I have several of Barry's books - my favorites are the "Proficient Pilot" series. My son just started to fly and I've passed them on to him. And I still enjoy the articles and puzzles in AOPA's magazine.
I have been told that in order to use an airport's compass rose it has to be recently certified.....because magnetic deviation changes over time and the USGS issues new deviation data when it does change.
Brian, whats a compass-? -😊 That stuff is old school tech. I bet if you were to ask 787 Dreamliner pilots if they ever had to use the compass, they would laugh at you. But the Feds still require it------go figure-!

Just imagine having him be your primary flight instructor. And you can't help but learn something just hanging around the guy!

Excellent advice . Lot easier! Classic video too.

Never leave your headset near the compass either
Anyone know where it says it can be over 10 degrees?
I recently did one I could only get with in 11 degrees.
