  • My definition of "quick" might not fall in line with others. But I've got you know, things to say. I call these a "quickview" because it covers unboxing and initial testing. It does not speak to durability, longevity, etc.
    This is the "quick" review of the new evolution of the Hobbywing Fusion 1800, the SE which has replaced the "legacy" Fusion 1800. How does it compare? Is it worth the 80 bucks? What did they have to compromise to get the price down that far?

    I think it's worth mentioning to your audience that with the foc it maintains rpm regardless of load so you don't have the "transmission saving finger " like a brushed setup tells you when it's loading up and the importance here is making sure the slipper is set right or teeth be flying yo 😂

    Nice quick re-view! The SE looks really smooth. Looks like a great motor/ESC choice for someone on a budget. I may pick one up to try out myself. I still love the smoothness of my PRO and it will be my go to for most of my rigs in the future. Thanks for the review and looking forward to the next!

    Looks good. SE is probably the best motor/ESC for the SE 😂. Had to pause mid video and go drive my Enduro Sendero HD which has a classic Fusion 1800kV. I believe I am still running the stock pinion with the higher over-drive. I can get that truck to creep to the point that you can barely see the tires turn. But pull the trigger, and BAM, it will hop up anything! I run at least 25% exponential on my Spektrum Rugged radio. They say the Fusion SE is just the classic in a cheaper case. But it may be a bit different physically and programmatically 🤷‍♂️ Regardless, I love all my Fusions and Axes. I’m sure an SE will find its way into a truck in the near future.

      It doesn't feel hugely different compared to the old 1800, but it definitely feels different. Something had to change other than just the color of the can, because the thing got 5mm shorter. Whether the rotor got shorter or the the ESC got smaller, there's a change. Also, through whatever wizardry, the SE genuinely feels like it makes more torque.

    Glad to see ya not hating on a throttle curve/expo. Not sure if I wasn’t conveying my point as well i was trying to, but that feeling of bottom end modulation is the wording I guess I should’ve used when we were chatting last week about throttle curve. That particular aspect is something I’ve grown accustomed to regardless of power system, so when I drive something without it, it doesn’t feel right at all. No matter how “smooth” it is.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I run throttle curves on a whole lot of rigs, because like you, there's a certain trigger feel I'm after. The Fusion SE is SO punchy, and with no electronic aids in the ESC, it all goes down to trigger control. It's actually kinda rewarding, because it feels like driving something that's just at that edge of being "too powerful."

    • @drz_rc
      @drz_rc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrawlerCanyon right on. I guess I just hadn’t heard you mention that in the last year or so that I’ve been watching the videos. Since I don’t have any transmitters that are expo adjustable, I lean towards Castle and that ESC70 so I can get that throttle curve. Really wish Hobbywing would add that feature! That SE is one heck of a deal, such a powerhouse from the looks of it.

    Great vid. I'm glad I found it. From you experience how smooth is it just above climbing pace? I am lucky to live close to a great club that has a crawling course setup that we use a a benchmark for setups. I bought a trailrunner fire between Christmas and a fusion 1800 se. 1st ride around the course was with stock electronics then I switched to to fusion. First thoughts I was blown away with the slow speed, foc, and that torque wow. I noticed around the course on the flats the vehicle would roll rough (kinda jerky as if it was hunting). Recalibrated the motor and that didn't change, I also turned off the rpm matching to no avail. I just wondered if you had experienced this? Since then I have switch out the stock transmitter and tyres but I am yet to find the time to test.

      On my test rig theres no issue with smoothness at any speed , even with a vintage Airtronics MX-Sport controller running things. That is strange-- I will have to take a closer look at the SE's behavior across the whole powerband.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My "legacy" 1800s feel smoother, but with less torque. I don't know what they did between the old one and the SE, but the new one feels way more punchy/strong to me.

  • @Andy_Yates
    @Andy_Yates ปีที่แล้ว

    This one looks like a winner for sure. As much as I like the Castle Slate in my Class1 rig (under the old rules), a fusion would really simplify the 1900 + MambaX layout. Or maybe move my puller pro into my 4ws rig and get the fusion in the TRX4. Its wiring would look a lot cleaner 😂. I'm so glad they released shorter versions of these to fit in more applications

    • @CrawlerCanyon

    Interesting review. Sounds like the days of the HW1080 and some variety of HH Sport motor as the bog standard, budget-ish upgrade might be numbered. What are your thoughts of what conditions/rigs the brushed combo might be preferable?

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are more adjustability options with a 1080 (like 15 programmable parameters compared to 7) and a whoooooole range of turn counts, where with the SE you have the choice of 1200kv or 1800kv. SO I don't think the SE is an outright "brushed killer," but it is an elegant, no-nonsense setup-- less wiring for a cleaner install, and more torque than I would reckon ANY brushed setup could provide.
      I would say to 95% of people looking to upgrade RTR electronics, the Fusion SE is pretty much the best you can do for the money. No frills, all torque.

    I put an 1800kv in one of my builds and love it. But I have 2 problems with the SE. One, you can't get one now...I want to order 2 more and they've been on backorder for a month now. Two, I worry that the current prices ($70-$80) are temporary. HW lists them as $110 and $120 respectively, with the current price being discounted. Maybe this is just a marketing tactic, but if it's not and the price is to increase, that's going to really make it hard to justify purchasing the SE over the Pro. But, if they're really wanting to push their brushed 1080 and Quicrun brushed combos, I don't see how they wouldn't increase the price of the SE, otherwise there's no reason to buy a brushed combo.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can find them on AliExpress, takes about two weeks or so to get one. That's where I got my 1200. I think te price is going to stay in that 70-80 range, they're aiming hard at the "RTR upgrade" market-- remember, the MSRP on the Pro is a ludicrous $215.

    Hello again what settings do you have for the 1200 se? I’m looking for a baseline to start with before I start tinkering. I’m also starting with a 18 tooth pinion on my enduro kit before I change pinions. Thanks again.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only change I made on the 1200 was to turn the drag brake up one click, because I'm running a 22T pinion with it. My 1800 is in a VFD-Twin, and I run it in "factory settings."

    @jpokorny2268 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, actually a great learning experience for me after a few videos on this motor.Would a 1200 be less punchy because I'm very new at the trigger and don't have a heavy or fast crawler ( Ecto .Thanks for your play by play way of bringing questions to the for front as the motor over and under performs in situations.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that in a Stealth X the 1200 would be a bit easier to control-- and mind you, this is working from the assumption that literally everyone runs 3S. If you're running 2S, I'd recommend the 1800 all the way.

    Hello, I have Rock pirates LCG interceptor, I currently have the previous version 1080 with a ready 16 turn 5 slot 550 crawler motor. So my question to you is this: will there be a noticeable improvement in performance with the fusion se? Additionally do the 1080 program cards work with the fusion se? Thanks, your videos are very informative

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To the first, the answer is absolutely. The 1080 is great, but even if your Reedy is a Radon (and not one of the RTR-grades) you'll still notice a significant increase in torque.
      Yes, the card will work. The SE comes with a sticker that goes on the card with the Fusion parameters, but you can just use it as a "reference card" if you plan on still using the card with the 1080 in the future.
      The Surpass 540+ are the only 5-slots I mess with.

    • @CrawlerCanyon

      The Pro is definitely smoother. I think of the SE as a Pro with all of the electronic aids/limiters removed, so it's almost just raw power. You have to be a lot more conscious on the trigger with the SE. But as far as what the Se is, or what I see it as, which is an inexpensive brushless upgrade for RTR rigs-- I don't think it has any competition.

  • @fejwe
    @fejwe ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess I'm the crazy one, I run both my Fusion Pros at 100% reverse. I just turn down my brake endpoint to around 65% based on the assumption that the endpoint adjustment is a bit easier to change on the fly if I want to, and doesn't limit the power, just the speed.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've gotten comfortable enough with the SE to run it at 75% reverse, but 100% reverse still just feels like an absolute rocket.

  • @twilliamrc4wd
    @twilliamrc4wd ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here's what you do you get a bigger spur gear and then you can run a really run a small pinion gear that's what I do this with my crawlers they all run a 60 tooth or 61 tooth spur gear through the other ones running a 9 tooth with 32-pitch for my crawler

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SE gearbox has an intermediate gear, similar to the idler gear in a Capra gearbox, so the pinion does not make contact with the spur gear. Pinion size is limited by the configuration of the motor mount.

    • @twilliamrc4wd
      @twilliamrc4wd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well plan to if you can find a gear that is the same pitch is a transmission of that truck

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The intermediate gear is 48P (as well as pinion and spur) but that gear is a "hat" gear, with a larger side that meshes to the pinion, and a smaller side that meshes to the spur. So setting pinion mesh is SUPER easy, but available pinion sizes is very limited. The slots in the motor plate are less than 25mm apart, so the motor has to be clocked slightly, which makes much of the length of each mount slot unusable. I'm not 100% sure why they opted to do it this way.

      The motor mount plate is cast aluminum, and there are relieved sections pretty much all around it (it could easily have just been a machined plate) so the amount of room available to grind on the spur side is 2mm. This is definitely a part with room for an aftermarket plate, we'll just have to wait for someone to make it. Until then, the angled slots only allow us to go down to around a 16T. Maybe 15T, depending on the holes on the motor can. A 17T is the absolute minimum on the Fusion.
