Well done Mr Treadway, I look forward to your weekly blogs , it feels like a nice visit from a friend. I have the Tiegra gears I was struggling with the hills near me , but I just changed the cassette from 11 to 32 to 11 to 34 and it made a big difference. See you next weekend
Thanks so much, Richard. I always look forward to your comments too, so the feeling is very much mutual. 👌🏻 And yes, it’s crazy how much difference two small teeth can make, isn’t it? Imagine how I felt when I went from 11-28 to 11-34 just before I climbed Great Dun Fell…. I still think it’s the only reason I was able to get up there! 😂
Oh! Oh! Oh! This is my frame! This is what I refer to Stig (as in, of the dump, because I picked her up from there! Who takes a perfectly undamaged carbon frame to the dump?!) - The Tiagra 4700 RD has the same cable pull as the 11/12 speed 105 and up systems. I stuck an 11 11-34 speed cassette and a pair of RS505 shifters as mine was a 2017 with the last of the god awful Giant Conduct cable/hydraulic systems that were frankly dangerous. SO MUCH BETETR! Anyway, I'm rebuilding my coffee truck for an event, so going to leave this playing in the background and rewatch again tonight :)
It’s a beautiful frame, so I agree it’s a crime to dump it! Well done for resurrecting it from certain death! Good luck with the coffee truck build too. 👌🏻
I'm all new to cycling, just bought my first gravel bike from Decathlon 2 months ago (GRVL120). I love watching youtube videos like this, hoping to do one of these upgrades some day! :) I'd love to swap the 1x10 MicroShift groupset to something nice like the 105, slap on some slicker tyres and maybe convert it to a road bike :) Also I can't think of a reason why your channel is only at 4,5K subs with the professionalism and quality of the videos that you make, I'm sure it'll grow fast. Greetings from Poland!
I love Decathlon bikes. My first ‘proper’ road bike was a Tribann500SE, which still sits proudly in my turbo trainer. They were so underrated for years but I am now so happy they sponsor the AG2R world tour team and people are starting to see that expensive bikes aren’t the only option for great quality. With regards your bike, if you could find a cheap set of wheels to stick road tyres on, then it makes it so much easier to swap them over to cover you for both road and gravel. Then you’ll have a proper go anywhere machine. 💪🏻 Thanks so much for the kind words too. The channel is growing nicely, so hopefully that continues and we can get more people out on two wheels. So happy to have you on board. 👌🏻🌟
I can’t tell you how happy this makes me! The sole purposes of this channel is to convince people of how awesome cycling is and to show how it doesn’t have to be stupid expensive to take up. I’m so glad I gave you the motivation to get an AliExpress bike. Wishing many thousands of miles of happiness on it and thanks so much for the kind words. 💪🏻

Thanks so much, Rui. Really appreciate the kind words. Regards your wheels though, do you know how old they are? Done if the older hubs were 10 speed only, so they weren’t quite wide enough Durban 11 speed cassette. Hopefully not, but you might have an 8/9/10 speed cassette! There is a hack, where you can file down the rear splines on the hub, so a cassette sits further back and therefore allows for 11 cogs. I’ve never done that myself but have heard of others doing it. As for Cliff’s reaction, when I posted the finished picture in my cycling WhatsApp group, he didn’t initially recognise it as his bike. I think because it was so clean! 😂
@petertreadway hi again Peter, I am not worry about the wheels since I will upgrade my wheels to carbon..the ones you used on your gravel bike build...using your affiliate link👍
In my case, cost me 360 quid to upgrade the sora to the 105 R7000 rim brake last march, all brand new with a Ultegra rear mech. nice upgrade on my 2016 Giant Defy Allux. 11 speed though. Think it was on sale on Merlin Cycles back then.. the groupset costed almost the same as the power meter😁 But now its a bit of a waste since it got relegated to trainer/winter bike after i got a posh Domane SL7 😅😅 Thanks for the content!
That’s a great price for a 105 upgrade. You sound like me though, spending money on a bike only to mothball it for something newer and shinier! 😂 N+1 is real! 😬😉
@@petertreadway it’s not mothballed (yet!) 😂😂 is being used on the turbo.. Yeah paid £70 for the bike on the charity shop with a “gearing issue” - someone put a 8 speed cassete on a 9 speed sora…. You could but then you’d just have to re-lubricate it all before you took it out anyway. An even bigger upgrade! Love it. It's crazy how much difference a move up a couple of grades can make. Happy riding and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Nice one! Although I always wash before working on a bike, not perfect but certainly cuts down on dirt in the process, then another clean before installing. So, a potentially perfectly good Tiagra groupset, to the parts bin or ebay? That could be an interesting video....cleaning, assessing then maybe selling or even installing onto another bike??
Yeh, I probably should wash it twice, but I'm a bit lazy! 🤣 I'll offer the Tiagra group back to Cliff for now, but if he doesn't need it, I could do a separate build with it. 👌
You're right, how strange! Having just looked for the correct product, I don't seem to now be able to find it complete with the crank, so perhaps it's 'out of stock' and they swapped the product out on that page! AliExpress can be strange like that at times. Thanks for letting me know though, I'll keep digging and hope to get a link direct to the full group ASAP.
Mtb rider here but really enjoyed the video. Am i correct in thinking that for mountain bikes, you would need to upgrade the freehub to microspline to upgrade thw cassette from a 10speed to a 12speed?
Hey Phil, thanks so much. Really glad you enjoyed the video. In answering your question though, I'll preface my response by saying I'm no MTB expert and so MTB standards regards Microspline and/or XD hubs (basically, anything that isn't HG! 🤣) are a little alien to me. That said, I wouldn't necessarily say you'd have to upgrade to Microspline, as there are plenty of older MTB wheels with HG hubs out there that will accept 12 speed cassettes. For instance, I have a set of 27.5" wheels in the garage that I've recently fitted a huge 13 speed (yes, 13 speed!) 10-52T cassette (which I'm looking to fit to an MTB build soon... watch this space!). As such, although Microspline is now becoming the standard for MTB free hubs, you should still be able to find plenty of wheel sets with an HG body that can be expanded. Hope that helps
Great watching an expert at work. But the benefits of that new 12 speed will soon be lost if your mate doesn't up their maintenance game. I can't help but think he'd have been better off simply upgrading a couple of parts from eBay, like a DuraAce chainset and a higher capacity rear mech. And then keep the bike clean.
I was thinking of switching from Tiagra 4700 to 105 R7000 (mechanical) or perhaps full hydraulic brakes. It seems the 4700 and R7000 shifters these days cost almost the same in AE, pretty sure both lines are legit, unlike chains, brifters would be very difficult to fake. Originally I was just looking for replacements to have in case the brifters break due a crash or something, when I saw the good price on the 105s. On the other hand, I have some stock of chains and cassettes at home, and would have to change them to 11 speed, so more costs. And even more costs if switching to hydraulic. Haha, I don't know, I guess I'm too happy with my proletarian Tiagras, only thing I don't like is the silly plastic name plates that tend to get loose and break off, I've already had to replace those a couple of times. 12 speeed? I will never need that many cogs at the back. New freehub body and even more maintenance and less durability for a marginal cadence benefit? I don't see it.
You sound just like me. If I have something running on my bike, then I need at least a couple of spares of each part in case something goes wrong! 😂. That can get expensive! I definitely think you’d feel the benefit of going from Tiagra to 105, if only 11speed, which you could probably pick up even cheaper on AE. 👌🏻
@@petertreadway Yes. I didn't mention it because it's not strictly like-to-like, but Shimano-compatible shifters like Sensah/Ltwoo are a thing, which is another solution if you just want spares. Hi Peter, I have a Giant Conduct brake system too, can I dump the conduct system and use the existing shifters and calipers or do I need to buy a new shifters and calipers? Thanks
Hey, if you're looking to go full hydraulic then you can use the same calipers, but sadly you'd need to replace the shifters, as they're only set up for cables. You'd also need to run new hoses from the calipers too, as the existing ones would be too short to reach the backs of the shifters. As a nuclear option you could remove the hydro brake calipers and swap them for cable actuated ones and continue using the shifters, although I personally feel like that would be a backwards step.

Ended up changing the whole stem and had to lose 10mm from the reach as I couldn't find a 110mm stem locally or online that wasn't 40 quid (did I mention I am one cheap SOB?)
Oh, how weird that the width was off.
I had to do a bit of googling with this one, to figure out if it was OD, OD2 or some other Giant system. I still never got to the bottom of it, so guess I was lucky to find exactly the stem I needed on ebay! 😂
P.S. there’s nothing wrong with being cheap. I basically built this entire channel on that premise! 😂
@@petertreadway this is why I'm drawn to your channel and stick around to give you so much (kind natured...) abuse :D I think the issue is, as you say, I bought an OD not an OD2 stem. Hey ho... Keep making the cracking videos mate!
