At Middle Ear we had 2 full TX racks. I created thousands of DX/TX patches using Galaxy Editors. We used them on the four Bee Gees albums that I worked on.
@scotteglasel6077 have you made any of those patches available for use by others? How do you make them sound good or mix them in a modern song project?the beegees had great music and I still love their string samples and Orchestra compositions in their songs. How can you not love it? It would be cool to have legendary masters like yourself do hands on videos to teach us how to get our productions up to that level. I subscribed to your channel. I hope to eventually see you make some good to videos. Thank you sir.
@@jefgibbons I'm a harcore FM sound designer and DX/SY programmer, so I know the sound very well... I have DX7, SY77/99, TG77, TX81Z, and TX802 here in my studio. The Arturia DX is much too CPU heavy, DEXED was ok. But this FM synthesis in H7 is really top league! my FM-heart is beating! ❤

I was hoping halion 7 would have audio preview of presets..after using that in Komplete kontrol for many years it’s a headache too not have it in other similar programs.
1:13, The Zoolook album by JMJ was better known for the use of the Fairlight (you can even ear some fairlight's factory sounds in it) and even the Melotron than the DXs (however of there're some FM sounds in it, obvioulsy)
I got Halion 7 as an upgrade from Halion 6. Part of the reason I upgraded was because of the FM Lab. If you already own Halion 6 then £85 for this upgrade is s steal. Until now I was using a free DX7 emulator called Dexed which also comes with thousands of Sysex files with thousands of sounds so I'm sure those should also work with FM Lab.
I knew there was a good reason I purchased a cut price Absolute 5 in the Black friday sales - I get a free grace period upgrade to Absolute 6 which includes Halion 7 :-)
@jefgibbons indeed! I've spent the last few months wondering whether it had been a wise decision to purchase a VST collection that still required a dongle, lol
Thanks for another great video, Jef! Huge fan of Ray Lynch too…his music had such an influence on me! Had to upgrade to Halton Sonic 7 to get the two new synths. They sound so good!
Jeff..., I wouldn't use JMJ and Zoolok as an example for FM synthesys. It is an album famous for use of samplers (voices of mankind in different languages). JMJ mentioned more times that DX7 was a step back because machine was impossible to program and all the owners were sticked to presets. There are many albums of the 80ies that are made totally with DX7, much more representative of that technology
Yep zoolook is a masterclass in sampling not fm..it was done with colboration with Laurie Anderson who at the time was massively into sample manipulation not really fm.

Great video, back to my old DX7 days, and since I sold it, I think this will be a purchase for me! Moving forward in time, tho, do you know of any mpe implementation in Halion 7 either now or as a future update?
It sounds beautiful. But how do you mix it to make it sound so good?and why is Halion 7 a good buy if you have uvi falcon or kontakt?is it just another $300 spent on a vst instrument?
Jef your amazing, I never miss a video. But I just got the preview for the TETRIS movie in the middle of the your vid and... holy cow 😆. I gotta see it lol.
would've been cool if they carried on from the SY99/77 and made is a 2023 AFM/RCM synth/sampler. an 8op FMX with modern polyphony, sample memory, LFO routing, and effects, it would be the monster AFM/RCM synth/sampler all yamaha fans have been begging for
You know what:? When I think of a Virtual Workstation this product comes to mind first and foremost: HALion! Yes, Vengeance VPS Avenger is also a workstation, nost just a synth, but it's more limited and harder to see. That's why when people ask what the difference is between Nexus and Avenger, I point them to HALion to explain why Avenger is a workstation and Nexus is a rompler. Although the latter is the best example of Virtual Rompler: Nexus. Well, it was. Nexus has got synthesis in it now. But simply said Nexus is still a rompler.
I had thought Halion 6 had FM but it doesn't, it did have "FM like presets" for its sample and wavetable zones. DEXED is a free SysEx compatible DX7 clone vst for folks who wanna get their FM on for free. I own a physical DX7-2D synth and it has a higher quality DAC than the old DX7 mk1 units, and has less (but not zero) noise. Some of the character of the physical synth is its flaws and its lofi nature. You can dial the lofi into these digital recreations and get a very credible 90s lofi FM sound.
thanks for a very informative video. Looks like a very worth while update as GUI has been the worst for many years. Guess I will be quite a ways off on getting it as I have Halion thru Absolute 5 collection
Absolute 6 was launched at the same time as HALion 7. It's Absolute 5 plus HALion 7. The upgrade price for Absolute 5 to Absolute 6 is the same as upgrading a standalone license for HALion 6 to HALion 7. Absolute 6 uses Steinberg Licensing.

@@jefgibbons Thanks so much for the response. I love the new features in Halion but if it gives me a headache looking at tiny little buttons I won't end up using it very much.
