  • For a light novel adaptation from a no-name studio, Battery the Animation has a compelling tone and solid artistic choices. You should give it a shot, even if no one else says so.

This review is pretty convincing. I am always in the lookout for diamond in the rough kind of anime/manga. I will sure check this out. Thanks!

Bro thank you so much for making this. I just finished Battery and I can't stop thinking about it, but there's nobody laying out any positive discussion about it online. Along with all the ways that it successfully subverts expectations as you described, the show reminds me so much of my own sweet and sad past experiences. It brings back memories of old friendships, failed relationships and sporting accomplishments. However, most of all, it reminds me of the inevitable moving on from it all.
Takumi and Gou's conversation about whether or not Takumi needed Gou to be his catcher almost made me cry, because it felt it felt like an acknowledgement of the fact that there's always another person out there for you if a relationship falls apart. Despite there existing nothing explicitly romantic between the two, I feel that battery they share is almost symbolic of a relationship that forms, breaks up and finds peace in an enduring friendship. Like when breakup ends with the "I think we should be friends instead" sentiment, but both parties actually mean it. You're right about the feeling of melancholy in the show, but personally, it also gives me some peace of mind when I think about carrying on through the pains life might throw at you. I think the lyrics in the OP reflect this sentiment as well.
The show is honestly so much closer to an introspective sports anime like 'Ping Pong the Animation', instead than any baseball anime I've watched in the past. Thank you for being one of the few that gave it the fair dues it so rightly deserves. Consider me subscribed for any future ventures.
P.S. Lmao the Mets bit at the end got me good. Go Mets (pls don't waste DeGrom again this year I will cry)

Ayy! Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot that I reached someone with this show.
I find it deeply unfair that this show gets no love, so I'm glad that you were able to find a lot of emotional value in it. The OP is legit one of my favorites, and I agree with your sentiment about "Ping Pong," especially in how fatalistic both of those shows end up being.
And the Mets are in first place! They're not playing well now but they have the talent to go far. LFGM

I only watched this anime once, when it first aired, and I'm gonna be honest: the first episode was fine enough to convince me that I should keep watching with each passing week. It wasn't anything bombastic or life changing, but there was a promise of something more to be seen, and I really liked the opening theme.
However, like most people have said about their own experiences while watching it, the anime just sort of took a nosedive in a lot of areas about halfway through. I _might_ rewatch it someday, idk, because as I said above, there were a good number of things that I liked at first. I remember very specifically feeling disappointed with the direction the anime went in though, especially with how it ended.
For now, it's cemented in my mind as the one and only sports anime that left me high and dry for something worthwhile.

yup, I can understand that. it starts off like most sports anime do, with a strong hero facing a challenge to be the best, and I can imagine a lot of people looking for an uplifting conclusion.
And I think what I like about it is that it isn't uplifting. It makes it novel and I like how it stands out with a real examination of disappointment. But that's just a personal preference, I guess

Honestly I was about to drop the anime after seeing the show’s rating, but decided to give it another chance and thanks to you I will.

i’m so glad to see a positive review of the show - it wasn’t a favorite but it was good, and it definitely doesn’t deserve the super low rating it has. but i do understand what you said about the end about finding a specific reason to like the show. i think for me i enjoyed harada as a protag. he was frustrating at times but at other times i felt like everyone else just wasn’t understanding him or making the effort to because he was “different.” his detached, logical, “selfish” personality felt shockingly relatable as an intp. so while that appealed to me…i guess i definitely see why it wouldn’t to everyone. i think the show ended a bit unsatisfyingly but it still remains in my head to this day due to harada and also the hazing scene. as i said earlier, i really appreciate seeing a review of this that gives the characters a deeper look. (also, love the oofuri shoutouts.) great review!

Been holding it off for a while now and never really been a huge fan of sports anime(or real sports) but I'll definitely give this one a watch. Definitely seems a bit different than the more popular sports anime that I've been seeing people talk about a lot.

I really really liked the first 7 episodes, wanted to fall asleep during the rest. The opening kept me through. Not that bad but not the best.

When i watched Battery for the first time i was getting kind of bored with it because Takumi and Go weren't showing much change to their relationship. And then Shun showed up and i was immediately intrigued again.
He just throws Go into disarray with only a few words and has an incredibly sharp mind for those around him, but if anyone dares to make assumptions about him, like how Harada's captain did when they were at a fast-food place, he snaps and even gets violent.
I own physical copies of the Japanese light novels and there there "friendly" match between harada, Seiha and co and Shun and Kadowaki took a very different turn with Shun and Harada straight out punching each other and neither regretting it.
Tbh, what fascinates me about Harada is that he simply returns what he's given. In the whole story he's constantly met with hostility, by the vice captain, by his coach and his senpais, so he's hostile and disobedient in return. Shun is nasty and playful to him, and since he doesn't seem to take anything serious, Harada decides to "not be serious" during their friendly match as well and aims a pitch to just barely miss Shun's face, which enraged him and lead to the fight.
In the novel and the manga, which follows the novel closely and was unfortunately discontinued/put on indefinite hiatus, the relationship between Go and Harada is much more positive and trusting. It does have a very rough start but they grow on each other in a strange way that i still can't quite describe. They're not quite friends but simply comfortable around each other, like being in Go's presence brings Harada piece and vice versa.
I'm really glad to see a review that actually gave the show a chance and analyzed it so well without shying away from the deeper themes! Good work!

I just watched the anime and I confess I didn't like it, as a sports anime fan I'm used to interpreting the characters' feelings in a more surgical way but Battery was really hard to understand I confess, the characters I could understand the most were Harada and Shun, I can't believe it ended in episode 11 and I felt cheated, but I imagined I would have a novel because the entire anime I had this feeling that there was something very big going on but it was being poorly explained, I'll see if I can read the novel online. your comment was very good!! exactly what i was needing thank u.

it's a good question. from what I've read, Japanese youth sports organizations often punish claims of harassment, hazing, and assault by kicking entire teams out of tournaments.
but the punishment is so aggressive that it often leads to individuals, teams, and schools covering up these incidents to stay competitive. victims often say silent out of fear of even worse retribution if their team gets kicked out.
i dont know if this also applies to middle school baseball, or if there's any other cultural nuance im missing, but this is what ive read and imo it makes a lot of sense

@@yukissubmarine I love how the show is divisive, not for poor writing but for realistic writing, which doesn't shy away from unromanticized characters or plot. That kind of storytelling interests me for some reason lol.
