You'd be surprised how often I get that in comments and emails - people who don't even play WT (or are super casual down in rank 2) and watch my stuff just out of general interest. :-)
@@MrNPC the only way I have been able to enjoy this game is to forget the meta and the grind entirely and play whatever I think looks cool.
I find air arcade battles more fun than realistic. I get more action than in realistic. And since i like fast-phased combat, I can get that satisfaction with my planes moving about like playing ace combat. This is how I enjoy the game and how I feel more satisfied.

I quit the game 6 years ago due to frustration
Came back this year and I've been loving it like I would have never expected.
How? Well I just let go of the grind, played with a chill and relaxed mindset and only flew the planes I felt like flying, even if it meant getting into a lower tier or doing non-meta stuff like base bombing or CAS
And what's even crazier is that this whole new attitude turned me from a less than 1 kill per game player to a multiple kills one and even a team carrier sometimes
@@zanzao-1ps318 That's the only way to sustainably play a game like this, or WoW. The grind is unbearable. The game's free...it only costs you your life, and your enjoyment of videogames. Many, many times I just wished War Thunder was standalone; like Birds of Prey and Birds of Steel, two of my favourite '360 games. You bought the game, had all the planes: campaign and PvP. End.
I really enjoy your into and history. I wish more TH-camrs would do that when talk about things in WT. keep it up!

@@Yooski it's when you lock an enemy with the TWS and the target goes off a bit too far to the left or right of the radar. Normally the radar on the F14A can handle it but due to the TISEO (it's hard locked with the TWS) when the TISEO camera angle is reached the TWS gets cancels out too, resulting in a much narrow TWS scope instead of the full coverage one. You will notice it when you try to slide your select target manually from side to side, youll notice that the TISEO is going to force it to stay in the middle where it can see.
this only affects the TWS all the other modes works fine.
I've been watching you since about 3,000 subs, and I knew that this channel would eventually become one of the mainstays with the WT community - thanks for all your hard work
The AIM-54C is supposed to act like an AMRAAM in which it goes pitbull right after the aircraft radar loses lock. The A requires guidance until the phoenix goes pitbull. I heard in game, the C isnt modeled correct so that sucks a lot. Also, IRL the C had smokeless engines
The 54C in DCS has a smoke trail as well, so.. Who knows how they actually worked(I say worked because they aren't in use anymore)
They should re-add naval battles in air RB with a top tier twist to allow the new Naval planes to be used to their full potential.

Also kinda interesting that the AIM54C is "slightly better" track than the A considering the A is such an old tech that it couldnt even lead properly while its been discovered the C actually shares some AIM120 guidence "personalities" including interpolation when losing lock to try and reaquire and pitbull
The bittersweet review. The one I can't have yet. Tip: Using keyboard controls during maneuvers will stop the F-14 from flopping around, and ultimately will turn it into a monster
I can't stress enough how do i love an/awg9's pulse performance. Being able to switch from pd to pulse mid-lock saved a lot of sparrow launches, and its pulse tracking is awesome, it can track low flying targets, almost as good as pd modes can, even in a look down situations

Neither F-14 having drop tanks is such a huge slap in the face to Tomcat lovers. They literally have dedicated pylons just for 2 drop tanks. I think that's why they won't add them, because they'd have to change the entire loadout system for them, and still being able to carry your full loadout for A/A or A/G or both along with two fuel tanks would be a bit OP especially in Sim. Your loiter time would be insane.

Fun facts: One of the biggest issues the GE-110 solved was the compressor stall issue of the TF-30 which could send the plane into a flatspin and actually caused a significant number of F-14s crashing. The F-14A could essentially not turn too tightly, otherwise the turbulent airflow that goes into the intake may actually stall the compressor. The B solved this and also made the plane a much more capable dogfighter, because it could perform at its limits now.
2nd fact: The A+ designation was dropped, because the computers of the logistics system could not handle the designation because of the +. It returned parts for other planes. Therefore they renamed it B, to fix the issue.
3rd fact: The LANTIRN pod is a marvel of a display of capability. The F-14A could not fully integrate the system because its analog systems could not be modified enough to work with the digital pod. But the B, albeit still being a mostly analog plane could be modified enough - thanks to system improvements - to fully utilize the systems of the pod and actually surpass the much more modern F/A-18 in bombing accuracy. Many squadrons took enormous pride in this and there are some badges around that note the F-14 as F/A-14 to honor the bombing missions.
4th fact: Funnily enough all variants of the F-14 were in the fleet when the retirement began. As, Bs and Ds were all present on multiple carriers and all had proven that they were an asset in their own regards, making it perhaps the only plane which had all of its variants in active duty until its retirement.
Outlook: What makes the D so special? The D Tomcat is essentially a truly modern Tomcat. It finally had fly by wire systems, a much better radar and truly cutting edge onboard systems. It essentially abandoned the 60s platform the original cat was based on. Parts of it are still classified to this day. But what the D shows in improvement shows how capable the old Tomcat was. The A and B were still at their core a design of the late 60s. But they were actually capable enough to live on until the dawn of the new millenia, maintaining their capability in an area, where technological advantages mean everything. She truly was the pinnacle of all Grumman cats!
First fact isn’t entirely true. The F-14A couldn’t turn as well as the F-14B due to being underpowered thanks to the TF30 motors producing much less thrust. The compressor stalls were only an issue if the pilot was constantly moving the throttles or pulling high AoA. To counter this, F-14A pilots would just keep the throttles in Zone V afterburner while dogfighting. It was necessary anyways because as mentioned earlier, the F-14A was underpowered.
Just the idea of 2 Sparrows and 2 Winders outboard and 2 Phoenixes and 2 1000 lbs. boms inboard gives me goosebumps. Can't wait to grind this one.

afaik it’s about 50 km/h slower on the deck in terms of top speed but the low speed acceleration more than makes up for it

People often say the tomcat can’t win in a dogfight when the never used it in a dogfight but if you sweep your wings out or use aim controls it is a BEAST

The GE F110-GE-400 also massively improved engine reliability over the PW TF30's. The engines in the F-14B were a variant of the same engine that was being used as an alternate powerplant in the F-16, and therefore designed from the ground up to be used in fighters - something the TF30's were never meant to be strapped to, let's be honest. From my research the use of the Pratt & Whitney engines in the F-14A was basically a holdover from the cancelled F-111B Aardvark that was shoehorned into the VFX project since they were already there (the AIM-54 and AWG-9 were also required for the entries.) So we're putting the engines of a fighter-bomber (modified yes, but still built for a fighter-bomber level of flight characteristics) into a more pure fighter? That definitely went over well.

@@No_Feelings What nerfs to Sparrow tracking? Most of the changes to Sparrows have been buffs. The E2 was nerfed from where it was because it was overperforming. The 7F has received 4 buffs that I can remember that turned to from a glorified AIM-7E2 into a straight upgrade.
@@No_Feelings Also no. The F-4E shit on everything especially with Sparrows. You have 8 missiles at a time when other had 4 and it wasn't mixed match making. F-4E teams clubbed.
There is nothing better than the Aim-7M(unless you count the MH which just has better tracking which doesn’t matter in WT). It’s literally being used today.
Edit: I haven't ready any replies but I'm sure someone has mentioned the Aim-7P. It's no different from the M/MH it just uses datalink instead of the firing aircraft's radar. Again useless in WT unless someone else just so happens to be locking the same target, and has datalink as well. Until we get the F/A-18 in the game(don't count on it) there is no point.
IRL only the AIM-7MH and P should be able to loft, Gaijin simplified it. What Gaijin is still missing is that the AIM-7M had a monopulse not CW seeker.
IIRC 7F and 7M are identical in game, seeker difference isn't modeled. And then 7F can loft when you do it manually, as missile will continue to climb when firing at 15km+ targets in head on.
@@FirstDagger No, they're missing that every other Sparrow should have a CW seeker. All are modelled as monopulse. The lack of LDSD capability in all but the last variant of the Sparrow should be a serious disadvantage to the US, but instead it's simply ignored.

the lofting is also togglable in the f14 by using the acm cover.
also the 7m and all the skyflashes are missing their seeker differences so they are lacking all of their lookdown capability

It's almost a copy-pasta of the Tornado F.3, which I have a review up for.
I actually tend to use the camera to better discern whether or not a target is too close to the deck to hit with a sparrow, and as an alternative to getting a radar lock for gun computer use (since the radar gun computer can also operate off of the camera)
i didnt really like either of the camos for the F-14B so i got me a nice jolly rogers skin my friend made for me and honestly looks amazing on the plane. im just waiting to try grinding it once the bomb grinding spam slows down abit.
I like the f-14b its a very fast plane with good manouverability many countermeasures and really good weapons. On the dev server i once got up to mach 1.85.
It still bothers me that you don't get pitbull notification for the Phoenix's
I don't own any F-14's yet. But my friend has for awhile. He said that if you are taking the Aim-54's and aren't spending them all before you reach the main battlefield. Then you're not playing right. There's usually not too many cases where it's worth the weight of the 54's where the F-14's speed can't make up for it.

Tomcat has outrated the Fulcrum in a flat two-circle on the deck since the F-14A. The B does it even better- its just that you among 99% of other tomcat pilots never bother to use manual wing sweep, which is basically like neutering your aircraft in the dogfight. the F-14B can sit at 700-800kph in a 2-circle rate and absolutely rip around the circle to anything short of an F-16. Sadly even the people reviewing this jet on youtube dont seem to be aware of its capabilities in the 1on1 knife fight engagements. The F-14A was already extremely capable with a bit of manual wing sweep and actual attention paid to managing its energy. The B is much more dangerous in that regard

I have just now ground my way up to the F8U-2… I really like it but I wish it had the AIM 7’s as well.
The f8e has aim nine cs which performed pretty well at high altitude
9C found on F-8E are actually better than early Sparrows, though Pulse seeker is very easy to spoof with chaff.
F-4J is awful stock, but once you get Sparrows she becomes good missile truck with good, by 11.3 standards, radar. Now only if I wouldn't have to grind strike aircraft line to even start working on F-14...
Is there any way to find more detailed information about weapon systems ingame? For example: I launch an AIM-54A after locking a target with the radar and want to change the target to fire an other one. Sometimes the missle destroy themselves and sometimes they use the integrated radar to move on. But there is no info about distance or time that is required that stuff like this works out. Sometimes you can lock a jet with ease and then same situation it doesnt work cause its 500m further away. Are there any spread sheets or anything like this to learn these kind of things? Cause for me (i am a causal player) it feels more like random RNG than know how. Any tips?
Hey Tim! Have you noticed any funkiness with the relationship between the TISEO and TWS system? They seem to argue and it makes it difficult to utilize the Phoenixes as well as the F14a does. Any way to disable that camera system?
TWS is bugged so it will constantly try to acquire targets while scanning at the edge of the plane's radar FOV, so you have to point more directly at the targets than you should have to

I don't think what you said was wrong, but the difference, in game, aside from the C being slightly slower to accelerate and having a lower ∆V due to its slightly increased mass but the same rocket motor, between the two Phoenixes is how fast the Inertial Guidance drifts from the target if you stop giving it updates via the data link (and before it locks with its own radar), A is 10, C is 2.
From data mining we know it's called the "Inertial Guidance Drift Rate", and I don't know the unit. Possibly degrees per second?
I didn't want to go into a 20 minute thing about how WT does missile guidance, but yes, that was the stat behind "tracks slightly better".
The difference in delta V really won't ever matter in WT, we never get to make 100km shots.

what radar settings are you using?
@@shadowsicksix usually i'd use the normal search for rear aspect but most people just chaff it. but recently i've been catching people off guard with rear aspect pd locks, for some reason it seems to track rear aspect way better than it used to (might just be trippin)
While not really relevant to the B model, but more in General, The cancellation of D and later advanced options remains right up there with the UK dumping its Harrier joint force.
And all models of the Tomcat have a look of if it looks right, it flies right.

Tim have you had any issues with the F14b's TWS? I seem to be having a problem with the automatic target designation for the camera interfering with the lock, meaning trying to soft lock a target on the left or right most quarter of my radar scope just causes my radar cursor to bounce around and fail to acquire the target, or losing the soft lock after I acquire the target centrally and then turn. Very annoying for trying to hold phoenix locks.
Yes, I think its having some problems at the moment, there are some open bug reports.
Its probably not anything you're doing wrong - give it a little time to see if it gets patched.
@@TimsVariety hopefully soon, the TWS on the F14A still works fine. I think it's something to do with the automatic target stabilization that kicks on with a lock, you can kind of replicate the behaviour by hitting the cancel target stabilization but with a stable lock.

I think I am spoiled by the F-16's RADAR, but the extra missiles, flares, colder engines and better missiles is a welcome addition.

The GTM is actually a ground-unit targeting mode!!! BUT it can only detect moving targets.
I'll be going over it in more detail when I post a full review of the Su-39, probably next week.

The airframe and maintenance cost of a 5th gen in a 4th gen package. Sexy, and among the kings of the skies in her heyday, but a hell of a pretty penny and a pig for maintenance
We have the Tomcat. We have the Bombcat. We just need the Super Tomcat and my life is complete. I love this jet, its my absolute favorite of all time, looks wise, technology wise, everything wise.
Sad i will never hear one in an airshow ever again :(
Super Tomcat probably will come within the next few years. We still have a fair amount of other planes yet to be added, like the Eagle (both F-15A and C), later Vipers, Hornets, A-6E SWIP, Aardvarks, etc.

Heh... funny how many people disgust or arcade battles, when realistic battles are not even realistic at all. as many planes doesnt perform as they should like in real life. I find many to underperform.
The problem isn't the aircraft performance, it's the game mode.
Air arcade above BR 9.0 or so just devolves into a spawncamped-by-missiles fest, and there seems to be pretty widespread use of bots/cheating at the top tiers more than other game modes. Its just pointless, and not fun. Thats why arcade battles get a bad rap, not the plane's specs/performance etc, and personally I still fly arcade in the prop tiers a lot of the time.

Sadly when i mention under performance is because I had been noticing certain prop planes not performing as it should.
Take P-51 mustang and the F4U Corsair as sample.
In real life the F4U was one of the best fighters in WW2, with how nimble and fast is was. With decent maneuver ability.
But in real battles... the maneuver ability was ripped off it and just left the energy retention and speed.
I played both in real battle and arcade battle; and in arcade battle the F4U performance feels as it should, than in real battle.
Too bad the GBU’s will be useless in ground since the Pantsir still dominates the sky and no nation has an equivalent
