Umbria is a region of central Italy, bordering Tuscany, Lazio and Le Marche. “The country's green heart” is crossed by the River Tiber and it has lush landscapes of olive groves, dense forests, mountains, hills and valleys which make it so beautiful. Assisi is a medieval town in Umbria Region, central Italy. The historic town is the famous birthplace of St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order. Assisi is 19 km east of Perugia, located on the slopes of the hill of Asio at the foot of the Subasio mountain at an elevation of 400 metres, overlooking the valleys of the Topino and Chiascio rivers. The beautiful town surrounded by medieval walls has narrow streets and a plethora of historically significant buildings. Its medieval art masterpieces, such as the Basilica of San Francesco and paintings by Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, Cimabue, Simone Martini and the spiritual message of peace and tolerance of the Franciscan Order made Assisi a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO in 2000. Assisi is a city-sanctuary surrounded by the beautiful natural setting of the Umbria Region with well-preserved medieval communication systems and old stone constructions.
