Of all the videos I've watched, this one has given me absolute clarity on what a sucker is, sun leaves, leaders, and how to perfectly prune a single leader tomato plant. Thanks for taking the time to make this very informative video. Very grateful.
Until this video I never heard of a sun leaf😮. I'm new at this and my few plants are still juveniles. So I only pruned one time so no harm no foul. Just goes to show not to go with 1 source of info. Thanks for this video
I love this pruning video. It's quite possibly the clearest instruction video on the topic. Sometimes I rewatch it when I'm craving to be in the garden. Happy gardening, all!
Best educational video on tomato pruning I've ever seen. Not many people know, or understand this principle. You're a terrific instructor. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & talent.
As a first time gardener, I have been watching a lot of how to videos on grooming my tomato plants! this video by far is the best i've seen. I will definitely be using your method for now on!
Been getting more interested in backyard gardening and this is the first time I’ve seen diagonal trellis lines. That’s smart as it gives a longer distance versus straight up and down. Might have to try that once my tomatoes are at that stage
I love it that you mentioned Fibonacci. I was not aware of that relationship in tomato plants. You can see the same spiral in nature in the same proportions in these examples; look at a pine cone from the narrow tip, sunflowers, photo of a hurricane, water flowing down the drain in a sink, a nautilus sea shell, and many more!
Vihart has a really great trio of videos (Doodling in Math: Spirals, Fibonacci, and Being a Plant) about this phenomenon and why/how it happens, particularly in plants!
Of all the tomato pruning videos I've watched...way too many... this is the absolute most informative. I learned so much because you made it very clear. Thank you!
Best breakdown I’ve ever seen! You care about the information of the plant and wisdom it has to offer...not just yield or dominating a plant. Def gonna back up my gardening with this page 🙏🏽
I want to thank you for the wonderful and informative information. My wife and I did our tomatoes in the garden as you have shown and it was wonderful. My friends and family never seen tomato plants that looked like these or as large. We have plants as large as 16 feet long and BIG tomatoes very healthy. I cannot thank you enough.
Five years after filming and its still awesome. Ive always pruned every single stem in the crotch thinking I was doung the right thing. Triple thank you for teaching me how very wrong I've been.
I've always kept some of my larger suckers..placed them in water, removed the flower and in a week or so I'll have a new plant. This video was amazing! Very helpful.
This video is WONDERFUL. Of all such videos on tomato pruning I've seen this is BY FAR THE BEST. Total clarity on how the plant grows. I can now look at my tomato plants, look along the main leader saying, "sunleaf, sunleaf, fruit cluster" and so on. I love that I now know that fruit clusters only grow on a leader! (which might be also on a sucker). Who knew! I love the close filming, and the knowledge that I now have. Absolutely brilliant. Thankyou!
Thank you so much for being so informative and showing exactly what to look for! As a new gardener I was super nervous about pruning and identifying suckers. I not only feel like I understand fully, but can also explain it to my kids.
this is single handedly the most comprehensive video I've been able to find covering indeterminate tomato care. maybe it just makes sense to the way my mind works, but it did just that. . .made sense. I wish there were more TH-camrs out there making gardening videos like this with content for beginners that need more detailed information than the average beginner. Pretty annoyed it took so many repetitive searches, rephrasing similar search terms countless times in order to find this. Big "preesh" from all of the Me's out there iso videos like these!
This is quite helpful. I am low income and want to get into sustainable organic farming. I have been building a garden for 3 years now and am more successful every year. This video was extremely helpful. Thank you so much.
This is the video I have been searching for a long time. I started planting tomatoes since one month ago and most of other videos talked a lot about pruning suckers but never explained, at least not as explicitly as you did, what suckers are. Thanks so much for making such a informative video and even giving out quizzes after explaining.
I've 'buried' my tomato seedlings for the first time this year and it's worked better than I expected! I put them into a hole taller than the seedling and kept piling the dirt in as they grew taller. I didn't take off any of the leaves before doing it and even though I planted during a nearly 40c heatwave only one out of 30 odd plants died, I think it let the plants reabsorb the moisture and energy. Thanks for pointing out the suckers so well, I have heard they can be struck for another plant but I've never tried it.
Thanks! I like your straw underneath. I don't see that much used in other videos. Works great to avoid splash ups from soil and keep plants cool as well as retain and save water.
Stumbled on your site by accident. Really learned a lot. Your visuals for identifying and pruning tomatoes were super helpful. I knew about planting tomatoes deeper in the soil but not the cucumbers. I also like the idea of planting herbs and onions in between since you prune lower leaves off thus giving them more room to grow up . I especially like how you pointed outthe differences between the look of the leaves and where they were found on the plant. I'll made sure to subscribe to your site as I REALLY need help identifying plants. When he was alive my husband NEVER let me into the garden until the seedlings were at least 6 inches tall and he had removed all the weeds. I tended to keep the weeds and pull the seedlings much to his dismay.
After watching about 17 videos trying to completely understand how to correctly prune my tomatoes, I found you and now am confident I do in fact truly understand....thank you!
Wow, you're a great teacher, all the vital information without over-explaining the simple stuff - which is such a common mistake. Great reiteration too. Looking forward to our upcoming tomato season (southern hemisphere). Thanks!
The best and most informative video on tomato pruning I have seen so far!! Thanks so much for your expertise! I will definitely add this to my library and keep for future reference!!

I never once fast forwarded through your video because i felt every thing you said was supporting the point. a 29min video where all of it was beneficial?!! on youtube!! BRAVO!! love you :)
Great stuff here. I actually root the suckers for more tomato plants as long as the donor plant is healthy. I usually give them away as it is more than I need, but love the growing process.
Thank you very much for this video. This is the best & very very clear guidelines for pruning & identifying suckers. Cleared lots of my confusion Thank you. Gud bless you
Thanks for this detailed and thoughtful video. Especially finding the leader. I often have to remind myself to take a moment before I start hacking at a plant. I'm constantly researching and observing my plants as they grow.
I've been looking for this info for weeks. I thought I should leave some of the suckers. I did not know they all could be pruned off. Awesome lesson! Thanks
Thank you so much Steven you really taught me how to prune those cherry tomatoes and I've been wondering how to do that I know how to do the big heirloom tomatoes and I thought I didn't want to prune the cherry tomatoes that's what I heard from another person now I know better thank you for telling me and teaching me all the great stuff
So needed this. Trying out single stemming this year and have topped off a few precious tomato plants. Sigh. Identifying the leader has been more difficult than I anticipated. The fail safe of fruiting cluster above off the main stem was what I needed.
Ah jeez, I wish I had seen this video before I attempted to prune my plants!! I watched a couple others and got a little too ambitious with my snipping. Great explanations, great video!
Never knew it was so complicated. I grow them mainly for fun and have had great luck but figured i needed to prune didn't realize there is so much to it. Thanks hopefully i will get it done right.
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for - you showed how to identify the main leaders and which stems to prune. I will be looking at you channel for more information on how to make my garden the best.
As I recall, my Grandmother would pull off suckers and stick them in the ground to start more plants. I don't remember if she put them between the original plants or on a separate row. They would root and grow to fruit, though obviously behind the growth curve of the original plants.
@@Brenda0312F congratulations! It's a fun hobby for sure. I just discovered this channel this evening, but this guy seems pretty legit. Another one i like is "MIgardener." Tips from me - don't overwater. The general rule seems to be approx 1 inch per week. Also don't let your garden go to hell either - if you let the weeds get ahead of you, you won't be motivated to get out there and tend to them. Do you have chickens? Now might be the time. Chickens and gardening go hand in hand. They're crazy easy to tend to and give you eggs and fertilizer. Live in town? Most places, even the peoples republic of Los Angeles will allow hens.
