  • Michael Keaton is returning as Batman for the upcoming Flash movie. His character also returned to the world of comics awhile back. I sat down and read the Batman 89 comic series and analyzed The Flash trailer and tried to decide if the comic will be canon or not.

I'm definitely excited to see Michael Keaton's Batman again. As for the 89 comic, I pretty much have mixed feelings about it too. Wish it had a better ending at least, cuz it honestly felt like another bleak cliffhanger like Batman Returns had rather than the first movie's more satisfying conclusion (that's always been one of the reasons why I prefer the 89 movie over Returns). And yeah they probably should've done a better job acknowledging his past history of killing his enemies. On a side note, I just noticed the photo of Batman in the newspaper from the CW crossover is the last image of him from the 89 movie's comic adaptation. I guess that was their way of featuring Keaton's Batman without using his actual likeness.

I read that it was impossible at the time to secure a trademark on that bat emblem because the trademark office just saw it as the shape of a bat, not a stylised logo.

I'm guessing the recent comics miniseries will NOT be canon, given how often canon is discarded these days.
At first I was excited about BATMAN '89, because I had enjoyed BATMAN '66. But the more I read, the more disappointed I became. It bothered me, of course, that so many of the most beloved characters from the Burton films (Joker, Bob, Penguin, Max Shreck) are dead, but they couldn't have brought back Vicki Vale and/or Alexander Knox? It's almost as if they actually wanted to do a "regular" Batman comic, but hook Burtonverse fans for a bait-and-switch.
The real problem, though, is - yes - with Harvey Dent's backstory. I don't think people are upset because the Burton version now has more Black characters in it. I think the uproar is more because being Black is all they are as characters. They're just there for a story about racial justice, and that's a story that doesn't belong in a continuation of the Burton films. The big social problems in those films were organized crime and political corruption. Why couldn't we have seen more of that?

This to me feels more like the Batman 1989 movie compared to Returns. Written by Sam Hamm and directed by Tim Burton. I personally feel like this is the true third-story / sequel to Batman Returns. So it is absolutely canon. I'm glad it doesn't foreshadow anything regarding The Flash, but I do hope Keaton in The Flash talks about this and what happened afterwards. I'm glad this book and The Flash ignore Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

  • @Merit2397

I found Batman '89, or as it should be called "Sam Ham's Batman" to be okay. Just... okay.
Things I liked. I enjoyed the art style in how Bruce and Two Face are drawn and I liked the little winks and nods to the Burton Films. Also, Cat Woman was cool, and I liked how they expanded on her and Bruce's relationship. Plus, this series did keep me interested in finding out what was going to happen and how it was going to end.
Things I disliked. While I liked the idea of a black Robin, I found Drake Witson to be annoying. Yes, I know where he's coming form, but I found his sarcastic know-it-all, street punk attitude to just be obnoxious. Not helped by the way he treats Alfred.
Also, for a comic that's trying to tie into the Burton films, it really doesn't have that Tim Burton edge. Gotham and the Burmside district could fit into the Nolan-verse or animated series, and it would fit right in. In fact, some of the character designs such as Commissioner Gordon and Two-Face resemble their BTAS counterparts which stood out to me.
I also found it perplexing that it was trying to have a social edge when by all accounts, Tim Burton's films where more or less focused on the isolation Burce felt in his life as Batman. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that characters like the Miles Moreles Spider-Man, Black Panther, or more directly DC's Static Shock due a better job at addressing racial issues because they've actually lived them in one way or another. Batman to me, just doesn't fit because his problems are more internal and is a character mostly known for being cut off from very one, even when working with sidekicks.
Also, I just didn't like the Billy Dee Willaims version of Two-Face.
Again, I'm not opposed to a black Two-Face, I'm against having him be unsympathetic, which he's mostly depicted as in this comic. Vilifying Bruce Wayne, dating Barbra Gordon (not against them being a couple, it's odd but at least there the same age and I can see Williams as charismatic enough to win her over) to get her father off the force and even after his transformation, it's implied that he was always been aloof in his morals.

  • @ShatteredTrousers

I read 'Batman '89' and I would say I enjoyed more of it than not.
Some of what Sam Hamm was trying to do doesn't come across as clearly as I think it was intended, and I agree Catwoman is barely regarded by Hamm, which is a pity because she was one of 'Batman Returns' best elements.
This telling of Harvey's transformation into Two-Face is very interesting and in reading it you can see how much thought Hamm put into this very different interpretation.
Joe Quinones on art duties does a lot of heavy lifting here, possibly working from a script that was written in screenplay format, rather than proper comic book format. He illustrated a very handsome Batman book and I appreciate that he did it all without any guest fill-in artists. Having one consistent artistic vision throughout makes reading 'Batman '89' in one sitting a more satisfying experience.
As for whether the comic is in canon with the movies... well, the movie people have no regard for comics as a storytelling medium, so I doubt they even know this particular comic exists.
I think any connection is going to be based more on what the movies neglect to address, more than overt references to the comic. For example, Sam Hamm's vision of Robin *might* exist in the continuity visited in 'The Flash,' but only because I don't think there will be anything that directly contradicts 'Batman '89.'
One last thing, ask Kevin from Pegwarmers about the 'Batman Returns' Robin figure with the hi-top fade. The Boy Wonder looks like he saw a g-g-ghost!

TBH I doubt the movie will have time to get into that level of detail. I agree with other comments that say the movie probably won't actively de-canonize the comic, but also won't go out of its way to make it canon either.

    Batman '89: Echoes
A second series was announced by DC Comics on August 17, 2023. The first issue of the new series will be released November 28, 2023. It will be penned, once again, by Sam Hamm, with art by Joe Quinones. In the series, Batman has mysteriously disappeared after Dent's death, leading Gotham citizens to take to the streets to fight in his place. Scarecrow will be featured as one of the antagonists.

I dont think its the same Batman from the 89 movie and the comic most certainly isnt canon to anything but itself. The world in the Flash looks too much like the real world and not a gothic nightmare. The Flash isnt really dimension hopping so much as he is butterfly effect time traveling, so this is going to be a world where Bruce(Affleck) died and Keaton is playing a version of the Thomas Wayne Batman, who just so happens to look like the 89 Batman

Flash isn’t canon anyway. The Batman we see in Flash isn’t the Burtonverse Batman. It’s a Burtonverse adjacent universe somewhere between the Burtonverse and the DCEUniverse.

  • @grkpektis

I don't think Flash is going to be cannon to Burton at all, this is the DCEU flashpointed which has nothing to do with the 89 movie. Keaton is just dumb fan service that makes no sense

  • @elglasscock

I bought the first 4 issues then several months later after they went out of print, I bought the graphic novel.
I think it’s an interesting story, I like seeing the Billy Dee Williams version of Two-Face & the Marlon Wayans Robin & seeing the “89 universe” or “Burton-verse” continued. They at least deserved to have their stories told.
But I do agree that the DC comic’s & Sam Hamm were just trying to tell his story & version of the character that Hollywood scrapped out & not figuring a way to balance & merge the style & theme from the films with elements from the comic’s source material. It’s not a terrible comic, not a great comic, but it’s fine. I’d give it 7 & a half stars rating, on a scale from 1 to 10.
As for the Flash movie, I think they may not dive to deep into this comic storyline, but it would be nice to just see a simple nod to it. Like somewhere in the batcave the Marlon Wayans Robin suit in a display case or newspaper/magazine clippings of them together or just of Robin, as well as the Billy Dee Williams Two-Face, along with Joker, Catwoman, the Penguin & maybe other characters & villains we never got to see movie-wise. It would be fun, would only take 10 to 15 seconds.
Anywho we’ll just have to wait & see until the movie is released.

I don't think is canon. And sadly, Burton had nothing to do with that. I don't know if he ever had a story treatment for the third film or any ideas before they replaced him with Schumacher. But I wish they would've brought him to work on that. Is supposed to be his continuity. From what I've heard, they separated those 2 films from Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Burton happened on one Earth and Schumacher happened on another Earth. Supposedly the same with Superman. The first 2 happened but the others didn't. Superman Returns happened on another Earth. So that is just like in the comics. But other than that, I don't think the comics are canon with The Flash movie.

Are you actually going to see this, Tony? Some people aren't seeing the movie at all, because Ezra Miller is still in it. Other people will see it, but only because Keaton is in it. Btw, do we actually know that all those people were "murdered" by Batman? Maybe they just went to sleep. Getting back to the topic, I'm going to see this movie. Shia LeBeouf was also a nightmare, but he seems to be doing well. He even had a baby with Mia Goth. I hear that Ezra is getting treatment. So, maybe it will work on.
