  • Bela Lugosi features as the villainous Roxor in this film adaptation of the wildly popular radio serial. A precursor to Marvel's Doctor Strange, Chandu The Magician is the story of Frank Chandler, an American with mystic powers who helps his relatives out of nuclear-power themed scrapes. Enjoy!

This is a first class film of it's era. I agree with Anna, Cat, and Irene. It deserves to be watched. Considering it was made in 1932 I was completely surprised at how good the special effects, visuals and art work are. Excellent editing by Mr. Shuster to tie them seamlessly together. Cinematography by Mr. JW Howe is flawless. William Cameron Menzies studied at Yale and the University of Edinburgh and went on to create some great work. Mr. Menzie directed the burning of Atlanta sequence in "Gone with the Wind" as well as the Salvador Dalí dream sequence of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945). (As a side note, you should see Dali's masterpiece painting "Santiago El Grande" at the Beaverbrooke Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. I've seen it on three separate visits to that Province. It's amazing.) Oddly enough, in my view, one of Mr. Menzie's best pictures is the little-known sci-fi flick, "Invaders from Mars" 1953, which has an haunting nightmarish atmosphere all of it's own.

I lived unscaled from Mars growing up watched it everything it came in and was so excited about it. I'm watching this now wondering if a certain old "satanist" if the time, as THEY call him, didn't have a bit of something to do with this anda few other flicks back then.

Incredible camera work and lighting by James Wong Howe. Amazing art direction by James Cameron Menzies. The opening sequence of this he went on to duplicate in his direction of 1939's Thief of Baghdad for Korda. The Bela Lugosi character being similar to Conrad Veidt. You can see the beginnings here of his later more scientific/futuristic " Things to Come' 1936.

The plot maybe silly but the special effects were all done years BEFORE CGI, it was incredible work years ahead of its time. And the great Bela Lugosi as the villain can not be topped..

So, this is wild: I read on IMDB that the crystal ball at 5:26 is the same prop that appears as the Wicked Witch of The West's crystal ball in the Wizard of Oz. When the two actors here are speaking, it's obviously a smaller ball, but the close-up looks just like W of Oz. And the actor says, "Dorothy, my sister!"

I decided to withdraw my The Black Cat conclusion of my music video I shared a year ago, which I had planned on posting at my blog since YT doesn't allow it here, but I don't know. Maybe I'll upload it at my blog: grateful people like you make it all worthwhile.
