The plot concerns a big game hunter on an island who chooses to hunt humans for sport. The film stars Joel McCrea, Leslie Banks, and King Kong leads Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong, and was made by a team including Ernest B. Schoedsack and Merian C. Cooper, the co-directors of King Kong (1933).
Famous big game hunter and author Bob Rainsford (Joel McCrea) is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. He swims to a small, lush island. He becomes the guest of the expatriate Russian Count Zaroff (Leslie Banks), a fellow hunting enthusiast. Zaroff remarks that Bob's misfortune is not uncommon; in fact, four people from the previous sinking are still staying with him: Eve Trowbridge (Fay Wray), her brother Martin (Robert Armstrong), and two sailors.
That night, Zaroff introduces Bob to the Trowbridges and reveals his obsession with hunting. During one of his hunts, a Cape buffalo inflicted a head wound on him. He eventually became bored of the sport, to his great consternation, until he discovered "the most dangerous game" on his island. Bob asks if he means tigers, but Zaroff denies it. Later, Eve shares her suspicions of Zaroff's intentions with the newcomer. The count took each sailor to see his trophy room, on different days, and both have mysteriously disappeared. She believes their host is responsible, but Bob is unconvinced.
Then Martin vanishes as well. In their search for him, Bob and Eve end up in Zaroff's trophy room, where they find a man's head mounted on the wall. Then, Zaroff and his men appear, carrying Martin's body. Zaroff expects Bob to view the matter like him and is gravely disappointed when Bob calls him a madman.
He decides that, as Bob refuses to be a fellow hunter, he must be the next prey. If Bob can stay alive until sunrise, Zaroff promises him and Eve their freedom. However, he has never lost the game of what he calls "outdoor chess". Eve decides to go with Bob. Eventually, they are trapped by a waterfall. When Bob is attacked by a hunting dog, Zaroff shoots and the young man falls into the water. Zaroff takes Eve back to his fortress to enjoy his prize. However, the dog was shot, not Bob. Bob fights first Zaroff, then his henchmen, killing the henchmen. As Bob and Eve speed away in a motor boat, the dying Zaroff tries to shoot them. Unsuccessful, he succumbs to his wounds. He falls out of a window into the pack of his frenzied hunting dogs.

I show this movie every year to my students after we have read the short story and they love it. We compare the movie to the text and the kids love seeing the similarities and differences. A classic piece of cinema!

There was no book that had anything at all to do with this film. This film is based on a short story written in 1924 by Richard Connell. The movie was made in 1932. A book with the same title was written in 1964, and simply was not very good, which is why every movie since was also base don the short story. Of them all, this movie is far and away the best.
This film was shot on the same sets as the original King Kong, and at the same time.
When Willis O'Brien and the King Kong production team got behind schedule with their special effects, that freed up the sets for this film to be shot. Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Noble Johnson and James Flavin appear in both pictures.
You may not like the acting here, but you've got to admit the look of the place is great.
They Used The Set again for The son of King Kong and for for The für Szene of Gone with The Wind.

Wonderful! Who else remembers the episode of Gilligans Island which seemed to play a homage to this film/book. Rory Calhoun played a hunter who lands on the island and decides to hunt a human...and he chooses Gilligan!
This was the Zodiac killer's favorite movie. I have to say. He's right that the film is good.
Maybe it was, and maybe it wasn't. We don't even know who the Zodiac killer even was. He was never caught, and there wasn't even any proof that any of the notes and other things the police received were from him or her.

I just finished reading the short story and it was quite the read. Unlike the film, there is no attempt to portray Rainsford as morally superior to Zaroff. They both have much in common with Zaroff not being a counter to Rainsford but more like an image of a counterpart from the near future. The film does look a little one dimensional by comparison but I still get a huge kick out if it.

Impressive. This story has captured my imagination since the 5th grade when my teacher read Connell's short story to our class. I had always dreamed of a modern film adaption, though after seeing this, I don't need one. Thank you for uploading.

They aRE THE SAME SETS...I am not disputing that...just the order. The Most Dangerous Game was made in 1932, thus the sets would have been from The Most Dangerous Game, not from King Kong...fine point, but words still mean things, and you had the order wrong...so they used the sets from TMDG on King Kong, but they did not use the sets from King Kong on TMDG, as King Kong did not yet exist when this film was made...my only point...yes, they are the same sets. You just had the order of production wrong...why is that important? Did the Vikings rape, pillage, and plunder, then burn the village, or did they burn the village first, then...
Hangassan every source I've seen says otherwise. Game was shot in a month. they just used the sets while the Kong crew were still animating King Kong's animation.

In one of his Lucas Davenport books John Sandford says that this theme has been used and adapted for books and movies more than any other story since it was written in the 1920's. I've seen and read several of them, and, of the films, I think this is the best.

He's basically the crazy jungle hunter chasing Robin Williams around from Jumanji LOL
I wish they had remade this in the mid to late 60s with Christopher Lee as Zaroff, Sean Connery as Rainsford, and Richard Kiel (though he was maybe too young at the time) as Ivan. A "Bond" perfect casting. A giant Russian Olympic basketball player, Jan Kruminsh (apologize if I misspelled), 7" 2" and 320 lbs, would have been a perfect Ivan.
I actually feel like Ian Fleming probably really liked this story and modeled his villains after Zaroff.
I always imagined a Hammer Horror remake with either Lee or Peter Cushing as Zaroff.
Little slow at the start, but love the way that, once the action got going, it was a non-stop thrill ride until the end.
I absolutely loved the short story. Never expected the ending.

We read this from a textbook in English and i thought why not check out the movie that came from it. My teacher said it was pretty old but i didn't realize it was from 32. Still probably one of the most controversial stories i read when it comes to the topic of animals having feelings and such

This is a damned great movie! I was so surprised to find it uploaded.... a great movie for a late Saturday night. Robert Johnson' acting is superb and if not mistaken, the drunkard brother of Fay Wray is the same guy who found her starving in the street and recruited her to go to Skull Island in the original KING KONG. Also Robert Johnson, actor par excellence, was a favorite of Alfred Hitchcock and starred in many of his 'early' movies -
JAMAICA INN being most notable, with a stellar cast including Charles Laughton, Robert Newton and introducing Maureen O'Hara.
This is non comparable to the book. 99% of all books are better than their movie counterparts, that goez without saying and virtually across the board. However, this movie deserves its' due as Robert Johnson is superb.

The remake was recorded in 1993 by John Woo with Yancy Butler and Jean Claude Van Damme.
the story changes a lot, but the skeleton is the same. Human hunting preys.
There is also a (somewhat changed) 1994 remake called "Surviving the Game" featuring Rutger Hauer, Tracy Marrow, Gary Busey. Actually quite a good one!
The concept of this film has to been redone numerous times.
The radio version is just as great.

Films like this from the Golden Age of Hollywood make me wonder if someone like James Cameron could make his epic Blockbuster without all the CGI and the modern technological help to make those epic films. I feel a true cinematic artist is the one that would use old school stuff and not modern technology to make a beautiful picture that's the mark of a true artist

I doubt they could be made this great today! Actors actually could act, without their faces frozen from tons of Botox! The producers seem to think these days we want sex, sweating abs blood and guts! No such thing as a great script! Half of the script is the F word, not much conversation! It would be awesome if someone had the guts to produce like they used to. They would be surprised how many tickets they could sell

In nineth grade my class read the book and watch the movie and I still think about this book years later. The writing was phenomenal and the idea was so crazy, I never even imagined that someone could hunt a human like an animal yet the book did an amazing job at portraying the hunter and hunted❤❤

The story didn't have a random stupid chick in it and we weren't told who won the hand to hand fight to the death at the end. The short story in-fact only had 4 characters, one of which was only present in the immediate opening. The other 3 were Rainsford, Zaroff, and Ivan. The story was better imo.

There are some advantages the book has over the movie, but vice versa can be said for the film. I do like how even the protagonist of the book can be morally questionable as it really gives him depth that can stand on his own without the inclusion of the damsel in distress this movie uses. Oh well, at least she brings along her brother who is a delight. That said, the film has great atmosphere atmosphere building. Jungles are common settings for horror media for good reason, being inherently wild and dangerous. Even in monochrome, it really gives me such a feeling, partially because the music is very memorable and intense, befitting the tone itself. We don't see many wild animals in this besides the shark, but aside from budget reasons, I imagine that's because Zaroff killed most of them. Speaking of which, the darkened lighting in Zaroff's trophy room highlights how inherently scary it is. Holy crap, a detailed fake severed head in the 30s?? This was made during the Great Depression, by the way! Anyway, I get the feeling this would be given a high end PG these days, maybe even R just from that. And it also helps that this has stronger acting than a lot of today's films. Like I said, I really enjoyed the drunken acting of Robert Armstrong. Leslie Banks is a charismatic bad guy as ever as well, I don't know what it is about early 20th century films that have such enjoyable performances. You do owe it to yourself to read the story as well, but the on screen interpretation of it is impressive for its time.

You are paying attention to the wrong thing. Just watch for all the cheesy, yet great camera shots like at 27:00 and have a good laugh.

it is the opposite here in this case, it's the quarry that has the advantage here.
After all these years later I still remember a word in the story's very last sentence - maybe it was the last word ! 'Repast'.
