I've heard a different story about the the Ganesh ji and Kartikeya incident. What I've heard was - oneday Narad Muni came to Kailash to visit mata Parvati and Lord Shiva. He offered a fruit to them and told them to give this fruit to their one son who is more intelligent than the other . ( I can't recall the name of the fruit right now ) . So , Lord Shiva and mata Parvati arranged a competition between Ganesh ji and Kartikeya .
