    This is exactly what I wish I had every time I hear these stories.

      For some reason males really appreciate spatial awareness, I certainly do, hence my visiting the areas.

    Thank you for your work what really gets my Wairua tinglings is the ariel footages captured by the grone those fly overs where you get a true understanding of how my Tuupuna travel on foot and all the landscapes and its environment to accomplish their task or their daily lives,thank you

      Glad you are enjoying the videos. Maori of the musket period were fit for the tough life they led. One writer has a taua traveling 40 miles (64km) in 5 hours, in this case 2/3 was along west coast beaches.... now that , if true, is truly impressive!

    Thank you. Please don't speed the footage up, it is so fascinating seeing the landscape & imagining the past upon the land & waters.

      Hi Mary, interesting comment. I sped things up as was conerned at how much time people had for viewing.
      Let's hope I get a bunch of comments below as to what people think about this and I will go with the majority.
      Thanks for bringing this up.

    Great footage and commentary. The quality of the photography continues its upward spiral. I was particularly interested in the defendable nature of Te Arawi Pa due to the "one lane" access across the ridge. However, it occurs to me that would also create a huge vulnerability in that warriors would be cut off in the pa and denied access to a supply of fresh water. Have you come across any records on how this may have been managed?

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will cover many of your queries in the next episode 36 ........and maybe 37. Water supply for a Pā under seige was always the weak point for the defenders...... till then....

      Through human error, mine of course, my drone now sleeps with the fishes in the mouth of the Kawhia Harbour. ..I have since quietly replaced it....

    you should ask the land owners for permission before doing this, most of what youve shown is private land and its owned by tangata whenua and allways has.

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I try to get permission but it can be very difficult to find contact details of owners, especially private owners.
      If I think its on tribal land I will get the closest Marae details and if they have an email, send them one. Sometimes there is a Maori Trust associated with an area that I will also email. I have never got a reply to any of my emails, its very dissappointing. If you have any avenues that could assist that would be very appreciated.

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi again, wow someone from that area :)
      The Archelogical Society's website has data on Te Arawi. It states (back in the 1920's) that Kaumata from the Maketu Marae said that Te Rauparaha lived/hid in a 'Totara-pillard'cave on Te Arawi in the 1820's.
      Whilst droning Te Arawi the second time there were goats on it and a couple of them seemed to vanish as the drone approached as if they went into a cave.
      It is known that Te Rauparaha had a refuge cave at Tirua, but oral history from Kawhia also suggests a cave on TeArawi. Do you have any contacts for Kaumatua for the Kawhia or Taharoa area?
      If so is it possible to send something to my email address at kiwicodger@gmail.com. Would love to have a kōrero with them. Cheers

      Kia ora. Great project and footage. However, you need the permission of the land owners. See below.
      All of the land in your footage of the south side of Kawhia harbour INCLUDING the Tahaaroa lakes is private. You can't take footage until you get permission.
      nzlaw.co.nz/
      Where can you fly a drone?
      The drone pilot must gain the consent of any person over whom the drone flies. Likewise, the pilot must gain the consent of the owner of any private land over which the drone flies.
