Why to Buy the OLD GS over the R 1300 GS
Wow Stay tuned for my BMW R 1300 GS review and ride test.
Is it better than the R 1250 GS? 2024 BMW R1300 GS Specs
Powering the BMW R1300 GS is a larger 1300cc boxer-twin engine. It will have 10 more horses than the outgoing model. The peak power and torque output are 146 Bhp and 150 Nm respectively. Underpinning, the R1300 GS is a new chassis with an aluminium subframe and 10KG Lighter. Cant wait to hear the start up sound. The 2024 R 1300 will be a beast.

I'm 58 y.o. and appreciate the lighter weight of the 1300. I like the fresh, cleaner look. The power bump is not much but I think my 1250 has enough power. I would need to ride it but if its as comfortable as my 1250, I will upgrade.

Thanks for sharing but beware of the BS weight savings of 13Kg
The weight is misleading. It’s the base model weight with nothing on it. 3Kg is the battery weight savings 1.5kg lighter wheels but most people will get spoked wheels and not save that weight and it has a smaller tank. No proper passenger seat, grab handle or luggage rack either on that base model. So in reality if you got a lithium battery in a standard GS 1250 and went like for like spec it’s only ~6kg heavier

A 45 years old from The Netherlands here and I totally agree. I have been on an 850 GS for a while and 2024 was planned to be my 1250/1300 year. After seeing the 1300 I felt like I lost a loved one! Zero soul. Zero character. In a few months I'm going for a 1250 GSA and I can imagine myself by the dealer avoiding even to look at the 1300 toy thing.

Don’t agree. I think the R1 300 GS is way more appealing. Based on what you said, the R 1250 GS is like the new Discovery compared to my ‘95 R 80 GS PD. Last weekend I did a 1500km ride mostly on gravel roads, and the old school GS is still excellent for the job. I have ridden the water cooled models extensively and while they have more power, I prefer my lighter GS PD on gravel roads. The new 1300 is the first model since the 1100 that really appeals to me. But honestly, I’m waiting for the lighter R 12 R nineT GS with a 21” wheel, like the HP2. Now that will be game changer.

I had a 1250GS for the last three years and I have to say I don't like the 1300GS, it reminds me of the Honda NX750. You can't even swap over your Vario panniers to save money as the new ones are totally different. There are some great discount prices for the 1250 & 1200 GS.

Lol. It lools miles better, is lighter and likely better. This reminds me of when Ducati tried to drop their dry clutch, replace the 916 etc. People will always whine. The 1300 GS is the first big GS that I actually would consider buying.

We'll have to disagree about the looks. The 1250 looks better to me. The X light on the 1300 gives it a Honda-esque kinda look. I love the asymmetric look of the 1250. The same way some people will always complain some will jump on the new thinking that automatically newer means better. It's not always the case. I'm not sure what's the case with the BMW GS, but at least in the looks department, for me, it's a step backwards.

I automatically upgrade to the new models previously. This time I certainly don't have the same excitement about the new GS. Smaller tank? Cheap weight saving solution? Less fuel, larger cc = smaller range. One liter may not sound like much but with larger capacity engine it will make a difference. 190mm Front suspension travel? That's asphalt suspension in Africa were I live.

You're talking Cr- ap! The new bike has so many improvements from finish to comfort and with a slick gearbox with new peachy gear shift!
The 1300 also has better low down chug along ability, your talking out of your posterior!
It also looks very "imposing tough" with the new look, the way the seating and boxes work your also wrong about riding loaded!
More wind tunnel time spent on the GS1300 and all development, 1300 over the 1250 straight off for free!

I would have to try the new 1300 but coming from a 1200, one thing I felt was it was too big and heavy. I bought a 701 husqvarna to handle the off road and realize why I think smaller and lighter works. If the price isn't a problem go ahead and buy. If you have a problem with money, don't buy it. I am going to test ride one and if it feels right, I am going to buy. You can't take your money with you. Enjoy yourself...

I test rode the 1300 on Friday and I’m sorry to say it’s so much better than the 1250 . In every way, quick shift is a bit jerky. But so was my Ducati 950s when I got it. Now it’s smooth. After 6000 miles. I have been testing bikes for ages to see if something could replace my Ducati. I tried triumph, bmw gsa 1250 and a 950, Ducati 1260 and 950s. All the ktm’s inc 1290 super adventure, 790s 890s etc. Yamaha world raid, and Tracer 900 gt that I must say was nice, but way to small for me I’m 6’2’ The BMW gs1300 was awesome in the 22k configuration. But it’s the ride that sold me. Easy to control and corner and very smooth. Go try it.

God I wished I had bought one of those older Defenders just when they did their final offer! Since then the (old) Defender has climbed in value and price. I wouldn’t be surprised something similar might happen with the 1250 GS. I waited for the 1300 and even though taken on its own it is a great bike, I don’t feel the GS vibe when I look at it, so this time I am getting the last 1250 Rallye unit on the showroom floor. To my eyes, even the Tramuntana doesn’t look this sexy. Finally the one reason to pick up the last 1250 that I haven’t heard mentioned anywhere is that this is the last time you can pick up a brand new one whereas the 1300 will always be available if some day you change your mind.

Same with the old Ducati square headlight SuperSport. The 1998 FE was the last Ducati SS worth owning. (They should have painted it yellow and gave it the same decals as the 95 Superlight but that’s another video)

Its Lighter for a start and its better in the low revs and looks the best using your Land Rover analogy its much more Defender than the 1200/1250 fancy painted bungalows . It also sounds much nicer especially with the cat and flap eliminated and an Akro fitted .

I'd take the no maintenance boon of hydraulic valve adjusters over any boost in power or tech upgrades, and for many bikes, not just this model. The only ones that spring to mind are Harleys, including the new water cooled ones and the big Indian cruisers. Even Royal Enfield have dropped them from the Bullet now. Dealer servicing is a cash cow they won't let go of.

On one hand this sounds like dealership desperation; our local shop has four new unsold GS’s on the floor. On the other hand, as an Africa Twin rider, I see a similar argument for older models. In my opinion, the ‘24 offerings just aren’t worth the coin. As well, it’s not only the cost of purchasing that’s becoming an issue, it’s the cost of ownership over five to seven years that’s . . . yike$!

Not going to lie, when I first saw the R1300GS released I was underwhelmed and it really felt like a lesser motorcycle somehow than R1250GS or even R1200GS. But the more i look at it the more sense it's starting to make to me. It's a bigger change than what we got used to, but in the right direction. It's more of a "bike" now and less of a "car" that it was really becoming. I agree it doesn't look like "The king of ADV bikes" like the older models do, but ultimately i feel it will be the objectively better bike in all the ways that truly matter, including fun.

KTM will definitely have a next-gen 1300ish Adventure, and in order to compete on sales, they should 1) Overhaul the horrible looks, or allow Husky to Norden it 2) Fix their severe quality control issues 3) embrace the lower tank design of the 790/890, so it's even better off-road 4) further move toward their 950 roots with a more compact bike, like the new BMW.

I’ll take the 1200 water boxer 2016-2018 GS or GSA any day over the 1250 or new 1300 models. Shift cam is good till it frags a cam. I still like analog speedo and tach. I like the rugged looks. Would some lighter materials be nice yes, but not at the expense of durability. Anything over 125 horsepower is excessive for this type of motorcycle.

All the hyperbole about the 1300 is hilarious. Remember a lot of it is coming from YT “influencers” being wined and dined by BMW, or with a vested interest in making positive noises. “Better” is a subjective term. More power, a smoother transmission, less weight or feeling of weight, a potentially better quality of finish, new looks etc. can be countered with a big price tag, divisive looks, thinner, narrower seat, nowhere near the weight saving being claimed, no proper tail light, reduced weather protection without miles of clear plastic, over-complicated button setup, indicators in the hand guards, more electrics to go wrong, the cost of buying all new luggage and inevitably new model issues (and there will be - every new GS for the last 30 years has had issues). The more important point is that just because a new bike comes out, it doesn’t mean the existing bike suddenly becomes rubbish. There will be a dip in used prices for 1250 as the sheep, sorry, early adopters sell up to get the latest and greatest, but it’ll stabilise and there will be a healthy longer term market for used bikes, just like there was for the 1200LC, TU, original 1200, 1150 and so on.

I’ll take the 1250 all day long I wouldn’t even stop to consider. been in terrible traffic. Crossing international borders hit by trash trucks rear ended in border crossing lines hit on the side not even a dent on the bike never pushed me over had complete protection. I’m not talking about fast accident. I’m just talking about when you’re surrounded by vehicles and some of these countries that have fun traffic I would definitely take the 1250.

GS was something different. All others tried to copy him for years. Now the GS has drowned in the gray of other similar models. No more soul, no more style. It became one of the motorcycles on the market, and it is not anymore "the one". I will stay with old model and then, when time for change comes, I see no reason to stay with BMW anymore. I was paying premium price for BMW for being something special. I see no reason to pay extra money for something average, what BMW now is. But I am sure that marketing will do the job and explain well that 12,5 kg matters and that GS will again be the top seller. And yes, blinkers in hand protectors?!?! You must be kidding :) Good plan to make extra profit and and idiotic option for tourer
