I think voiceover is definitely the way to go. So many people turn videos on in the background while they're doing things, plus doing a video like this makes it completely inaccessible to the blind/vision impaired community. :( I like the idea of adding captions to what you're doing (again, helpful to the deaf & hard of hearing communities), though!
Brittany Ann you are right Brittany. Hadn’t thought of it like that. I certainly like voiceovers but with caption is even better! Go do that for my own video’s too !!
I feel like both captions and voice over would be best to accommodate for the vision and hearing impaired viewers. I also turn on sewing videos in the background when I'm working on a project so I'd prefer voice overs😂
I think captions would be helpful together with voiceover even for hearing people who are non-native English speakers and may have difficulty understanding some sewing terms and how they are spelt, etc.
My favorite part was actually the "wings". I would get a blue or iridescent fabric for it next time instead but since I already purchased the green glitter tulle I had to use it lol. Hope everyone had a great time. Let me know if you dressed up as anything and if you made your costume :D
I don't think it's the paint that's the problem. I think because the shoe was shiny to start with the paint had nothing to grip onto. Maybe if you tried roughing up the surface of the shoe first the paint would have stuck better to it. Alternatively, a canvas shoe or maybe gluing fabric on the shoe would have been better.
I definitely prefer the voice overs myself because a lot of times when I pull up your tutorials I'm re-watching them while I'm making whatever the tutorial is for and it's troublesome to keep looking back from the screen and then back to my project, instead I like to listen and follow the steps
For the shoes you should try floral spray paint. Its thinner but much more flexible and won’t crack as easily. Also the shoes were shiny when you started, if you rough them up a bit with a medium grit sandpaper the paint will hold much better! There are lots of tips and trick for shoes in the cosplay community so if you want to redo them I suggest searching cosplay stuff! Other than that your costume looked impeccable! Great work.
A good material for flats to paint over with spray paint are flats made out of canvas. That way your beautiful flats would've kept the color and wouldn't have cracked on that patent leather. The puff would've have also held on better. Amazing creations once again!
Or you could possibly have glued fabric over them instead of paint. I think the paint is why the pompous fell off as well, but it's a minor gripe on such a cute costume. You're so talented!
@@coolirpa Because the flats were vinyl you need a special paint that sticks to it. You'll find it at places like auto zone for vinyl for car interiors. I think it was Dupli-Color. I've used this type before and it doesn't crack at all but it behaves as if that's what it was originally. Hope that helps if you fix them later.
I’m not a ‘maker’ so not sure if my opinion matters but I much prefer your videos with voiceover. sometimes I have your videos on in the background or i’m more ‘passively’ watching. I don’t have a lot of focus and you talking helps keep me interested. I also liked hearing your comments ‘I didn’t like how this looked so then I tried’ etc type comments.
So cute! I wish you sewed a lil pocked in the back to fit that battery pack to the fairie lights and wore them draped around! Otherwise seriously so cute!
@@coolirpa heh never too late! People who cosplay may find it useful tip too :P I have to say your wing interpenetration is seriously everything though!
I really like the voice overs because I usually watch when doing something with my hands and needs part of my attention, however, this form of video is really nice for sitting down and watching how it's made instead of just listening.
I have always struggled with zippers and watching how you did this zipper is totally going to help me. Definitely going to use this technique when I make a tinkerbell outfit
Hey April, this is also a fun style of making a tutorial but I personally love when you explain things as you go and share your personal experiences or knowledge or behind stories of making of the clothes and everything. You are amazingly talented! Good luck!
I prefer the voiceover because I love having the videos on while I'm working on things, and having to carefully watch every second to catch what's going on makes that not an option. And, for disability youtube, having the multiple modes (text transcript, video, voiceover) helps cover the bases of accessibility for your whole audience (not speaking for myself, but Annika Victoria has been making some really good points about it with image descriptions on instagram for the vision impaired who use screen-readers. So, aesthetically, I agree that the sped-up style with music instead of voiceover can make for a neat watching experience, but it narrows the audience's options for receiving and appreciating. (Maybe a side series of favorites-in-a-nutshell instead of formal tutorials?)
I like both methods, voice over and subtitles. There's something very soothing about just the music with the rythm of the editing. However you personally are very well spoken and concise with your voiceover descriptions (which is not true of every vlogger) so that way is great too.
April, your Tinker Bell costume turned out so cute! I never would have thought to use flannel for a fairy costume myself, but it works! Now I imagine flannel would be great fabric for like a woodland fairy or nymph costume. I think you’ve inspired something! Also, I love the sparkly green tulle - it gives the amazing effect of looking like you have fairy wings but without having to go to the hassle of messing with wire, straps, etc. To be honest, at first glance I didn’t even realize you weren’t wearing wings at all! Oh, and I adore the giant, white fluffy pom-poms you found for your shoes! Perfect! Keep up the great videos! I like your usual voice overs because I can watch what you’re doing while listening to your explanation, instead of trying to read and watch at the same time. But I still liked this video, it was a nice change. Darla
For the shoes, if you use acetone to take off the shiney/clear coat on the shoes, you can then paint them. Then re-seal your paint with another clear coat. I did this for my wedding shoes :) I wanted shoes that actually had support in them (everything labeled as "wedding" or "bridal" looked like it had no grip on the sole and no cushion in the bottom of the shoe). So I purchased some nude shoes and painted on cherry blossoms
Hey April. The video was really good. I will say though, for me, I am usually working on a project while I watch your videos (crochet, embroidery, knitting) so I really appreciate the voiceovers. With them, I don't miss anything as I am looking from my work to the screen and back. I understand the hours of extra work this involves though, so do with that information what you will. Great content overall.Thank you for making videos.
Your voice is so nice tho! I think you do such an amazing job explaining all the details with a voice over! I learn so much from your voice over that it's a great resource compared other sewing videos and have recommended your videos to teach some sewing techniques to students. And cool pumpkin!
Love the costume!! I love that you always share the mishaps, that's so helpful if people want to recreate! I love that you decided to try a video without the voiceover but I definitely think that I prefer it because I read a little slow so it's easier for me to listen instead. I agree also with Brittany Ann who mentioned that the voiceover is better for the blind and vision-impaired community. That's a really good point she made!
I definitely prefer the voice over! Your voice is nice and soothing. But it also makes it easier to follow what you are doing when I can just watch and listen instead of stopping to read. But it's definitely nice to have captions available!
I prefer with voiceover much more; what makes your videos so valuable and high quality to me is that you include those explanations of why you chose a specific technique or process, or how it works, etc. I don't feel that the captions convey that info as effectively. Love the costume!
Hey April! Thank you for sharing your methods! definitely prefer having voice over! But this type of videos is a nice change for once. As for painting the flats, did you remove the gloss seal and sand them down before spray painting them? Having the rough surface makes the paint adhere better. Oh and use paint that is meant for leather! It definitely helps from cracking since other paints dry rigid.
I like the voiceovers. Great Tinkerbell costume! Since I'm a short plump older woman I made a Cinderella's godmother costume but not done nearly as well as yours! I used floral wire in the hood to make it into a peak, but watching this video I am thinking I should have used boning. I always learn something from you!
Thank you so much for this diy! I plan on trying to create a long slitted dress from scratch, but had no idea where to start with pattern making and fitting. This helps so much!
I love all your work, you've taught me loads your amazing. I wish one day to be as good as you. Well done so far on your fashion journey 🤩 Oh I prefer the voice overs on the tutorials/videos Much lov and luck for you future
No plz, I missed ur lovely voice during the whole process, u always make things easier to understand, plz do a voice over for every video. And u r awesome April, lots of love 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Very nice costume!! :) I like voiceover, also nice while doing own crafts at the same time to hear the process and not only see and needing to read all the lines. :)
OMGGGGG!! That pumpkin!!!! It's so awesome 😍 And I love the idea for the wings on this costume. Looks super nice and is easier to deal with than actual wings. As for captions vs voice overs, I personally prefer voice overs because it allows me to hear what you're doing while watching you work. But that's just me.
I had the same problem when I painted some boots gold for a Dark Phoenix costume! The paint seemed to make the leather "shrink", or at least less flexible, so as soon as I started to put them on? BOOM, cracks everywhere. I barely got them zipped up, and I do not have large feet! (Size 5.5 for flat shoes, any kind of heel and I have to go down to a 5. That's a whole different kind of pain to deal with.) The only think I can think of would have been finding some way to stuff the boots to the point of a firm, gentle stretch before spray painting them. It might have reduced the cracking when I put them on...or just made a worse mess when unstuffed before putting them on.
You could try sanding the shoes with sandpaper first try this with an old pair and see how it works. Another way is to cover them with fabric there are instructions for this in one of the back issues of Threads Magazine you can look it up through Threads on line. Really cute pom poms on shoes so authentic!
Such a good tutorial... I was tinker bell this Halloween as well and I couldn’t find any good tutorials of how to make a tinker bell dress. Anyways awesome video... you rocked this look!!!
For the puff balls on the shoes, there are these things called shoe clips which (you guessed it) are little clips you can attach on your shoes. They look like they would be easily diyable with some sort of alligator clip, and you would be able to move your pompoms to different shoes (or to different parts of the shoes exp. the back so they'd be like little bunny tails)
I’m in love 😍 the tulle cape definitely gives it that extra oomph 🌟✨ I do miss the voice over though because it helps me focus on what your doing instead of trying to read and watch at the same time
April please make a video about how to make the bodice form n how to work with it... I was in a very hard place in life..I watched your videos n got so inspired to do fashion , I have found my new passion now.. thank you
If you don't want the paint on the shoes to crack try using sealant. (I also made a studio Ghibli pumpkin. It's turnip head from howles moving castle!)
I prefer the voice over, but I absolutely love the music you chose! A couple of alternatives for the shoes: For the coloring on the outside, using Mod Podge to glue scrap fabric on would probably be a lot better than spray paint and you can glue/sew the pom poms onto shoe clips (cheap on Amazon).
I liked the cape idea. To repaint shoes though, you have to strip the shoes first so that the paint will stick better, then put a shoe sealant on them. It takes longer, but the paint job lasts longer too.
I like the way you used to do the videos before, talking about how you did things and why, explaining mistakes and how to avoid them, and having the video play at a normal speed.
I loooooved that tinkerbell dress on you! Your craftsmanship is always amazing! I do agree with many others, I missed hearing your voice. ^_^ But I totally understand how you feel. I hate watching my own videos back because of hearing my voice. XD
I prefer your voiceover because I listen to it when I make what you're making. It is SO much easier to have your voice going while I'm following the instructions so I can focus on what I'm cutting or sewing instead of having to intently focus on the video
Hey I'm sure this will get buried but there's fabric spray paint that I used for painting shoes for a costume I did earlier this year. I wore them most of the day at a convention and it doesn't seem like they've started to crack. I'm pretty sure it's Tulip brand Hot Shots or something like that.
If you paint shoes again, even if they're leather or faux-leather, paint with acrylic paint mixed with a fabric medium. Really helps with the cracking issue.
I loved your voice overs. I dont know why you do not like the sound of your voice it descirbes more than what we can see on screen. Your videos have been my favorite to watch and it helps by teaching people who do not sew often to find their own ways for there costumes and clothes. Since I have watched your videos I have made a pirate costume and soon to be Emily from the corpse Bride cosplay.
I generally don't like tinker bell, but I clicked anyways because i love your tutorials and make awesome costume transformations. And i was right!!! I really prefer the voiceover though, but overall i like tne tutorial and nice idea about the tulle as the alternative of the wings. I did celebrate Halloween i was gir from invader Zim i also made the costume :)
For next time to paint the shoes try Angelus Leather Paint. Even if the shoes are not leather it will hold up and won't crack or at least not as bad. The hubby and I have used it for Cosplay and it's wonderful to work with. 😉
One thing that could work for putting pom poms on shoes is to make them into shoe clips. That way, they're removable for when you feel like not having them and they still stay on when you want them on
I have limited sewing knowledge (my best friend is the seamstress between us) but I do understand some things, and I've definitely always liked the way you explained how you make things. Even for someone like me, with limited sewing knowledge, you explain things in a way that's very easy to understand and follow along with, and part of the reason I love your tutorials. Also, as others have said, with just the music, I tend to zone out and it's much less enjoyable. The captions are fine, but keep the voice over! :) Also, for future reference, if you want to paint PU leather flats/shoes like that again, it's best to rub them down with some acetone/nail polish remover to get rid of the coating and seal them with something like mod podge so that the paint you use has something to stick to. And for leather or suede, I would recommend Angelus Leather Paints to paint with. They come in tons of colors and are not too expensive.
I love the dress! and i think a combination of both would be perfekt, voice over to explain more but also a caption if you want to recreate the dress and need to pause at some time just to remeber what to do next :) i also would like a video about draping the bodice and making a pattern....
Next time you want to spray paint shoes, use flower paint, there's a spray version too :) It doesn't chip! If the shoes are actual soft fabric you can also use fabric paint!
I'm wondering if a sealant or mod podge would have helped with the shoes... If you wanted to go the sparkly route next time you could just layer the glitter on with mod podge too!

Maybe if you tried roughing up the surface of the shoe first the paint would have stuck better to it. Alternatively, a canvas shoe or maybe gluing fabric on the shoe would have been better.
This sounds super tacky but instead of the paint use duct tape, I did that for my shoes

Me too! Also adds more coverage for those that feel a little naked lol :P
coolirpa yess! Love it 💕

Another option:
After roughing up the smooth shoes, or using suede/faux suede shoes, mix Mod Podge with an acrylic paint or dye to paint the shoes.

I think I like the voiceovers better, too. This wasn't a bad video by any stretch, I just like hearing you explain things. 😊
Super cute! I prefer the voice over. I also wish you had shown the back of the dress a little better while you were wearing it. That wig is perfect!
Just watching this video for the first time. Definitely prefer the voiceovers. Thanks!
If you paint shoes again, even if they're leather or faux-leather, paint with acrylic paint mixed with a fabric medium. Really helps with the cracking issue.
I get distracted with the caption and tend to rewind the video again and again. I think voice over is the way to go. Love the costume! 👍🏻💕
Personally, i prefer the voice overs, but I would definitly enjoy watching these from time to time :) I did enjoy it and i liked the visuals :)
It was a nice switch. Can't wait for the next video.
Wow you look amazing in the photos. I might do this but I’m worried about the bodice part, though you make it look so easy!
I live in Japan and they are *wild* about Halloween. I didn't personally do anything but I loved all the fanfare.
This turned out so well!
this is such a cute costume! you look amazing in it tbh, I wish I had your body!
I loooovee tinkerbell!! Ill definitely try to make this outfit for next year 😍
I generally don't like tinker bell, but I clicked anyways because i love your tutorials and make awesome costume transformations.
Also, for future reference, if you want to paint PU leather flats/shoes like that again, it's best to rub them down with some acetone/nail polish remover to get rid of the coating and seal them with something like mod podge so that the paint you use has something to stick to. And for leather or suede, I would recommend Angelus Leather Paints to paint with. They come in tons of colors and are not too expensive.
ooh, you could try fabric and modpodge for shoes next time of you want to do that kind of thing!
There’s spray paint that is made to use on shoes. Ask in a shoe repair shop or online. It won’t crack so easily.
If you wanted to go the sparkly route next time you could just layer the glitter on with mod podge too!
there are so many really good youtube channels i don't watch because they don't have a voiceover. keep it please
Voice over is the way. :-) Love your talent!
I have to say I like it better when you do voice overs 🙂 but your costume turned out amazing!
