Banjo lesson #3 - "Take 'em Away" (OCMS) play-along (Beginners tutorial - frailing/clawhammer banjo)

Hey everyone :) Welcome to the banjo ranks! I'm Banjo Jen - a singer-songwriter from Sheffield in the UK. I don't really play loads of old tunes (even though they're cool) and I don't focus overly on too much theory or technical aspects. But I use the wonderful frailing banjo style to play and create songs, and - most importantly - to play for fun. So I hope that I can help you to do the same thing and get enjoyment out of this fab instrument if you're just starting out (just be aware you will always be the butt of jokes in folk music circles if you play the banjo!). Hi Jen, I play with a group of folkies, normally in the background strumming along with a mandolin. This weekend I sang and played Take em Away solo (first time ever) clawhammer style on my banjo. All thanks to you! Please keep up your great videos.

if I'm not mistaken, I'm hearing some of the same chords/ notes found in billy faier's "green corn" ! So the humble" skip to my lou" can lead to better things! Thanks jen.

Hi Jen, just found you. What a refreshing change to find someone to teach me beginners clawhammer in a language that i can under stand. That being Yorkshire . I like your style of teaching. not to fast or slow. I can follow that without my finger getting in a knot

Thankyou so much for these videos, Iv self tought on the ukulel, and my son bought me a banjo for christmas, So ive been searching all of yutube and came accross you and Patrick, and took my time on clawhammer practice which has taken a few weeks of practice to get it to a decent level. but ime getting there

Patrick Costello's videos have vanished. I hope he's all right. I really appreciate your videos, they are excellent. You're very personable and offer detailed and feasible instructions.
Glad you're finding the videos helpful. I just looked and you're right, Patrick Costello has taken his content off his channel. It looks like he's moving it all to Patreon / Vimeo where it'll be a subscription service. It's a real shame as they were an amazing resource but I also totally understand him changing it to that now as it looks like his health is stopping him from teaching and obviously free TH-cam videos don't pay the bills - so subscriptions make more sense when teaching is a person's livelihood.

Never thought I would get the claw thing down, having played mostly finger picking on guitar my brain did not like fingers moving backward to strike a note. I thought it would take weeks to get here. Your teaching techniques are making this a lot easier for me. Thank you for these lessons.

Thanks for going slow. Your lessons interested me because of no tabs. Maybe I will be able to memorize more if I’m not depended on the tabs. Question, when you’re playing chords how do you know which string to hit with right hand. You didn’t say and I can’t see on video. Happy New Year.
Thanks, Happy New Year! The idea of this video was that we're not focusing on hitting particular strings, just playing in time and making the chord shapes. I'm just hitting whichever string feels natural, not trying to make a melody. If you're in the right chord, any string will be fine! Though if you do want to make it sound more like the melody then try to work out by ear which would be the best string to hit (by trial and error) - this will help you get less dependent on tabs.

My "strike" just sort of brushes over the string, instead of giving it that distinct strike sound. I need to increase the angle of my strike somehow without clocking my whole hand/wrist. Any suggestions?
