Yes, those twin lead guitar solos by Midori and Miyako are already legendary.

There are two guitars playing the same thing. Those aren't solos. They're harmonies.

Been listening to metal for decades, and I do listen to the other Japanese metal/rock bands that have female guitarists. Miyako and Midori for me are untouchable, love them both equally, the others don't quite capture me like these two who are simply mesmerising.

Bassist Miho "Natural Born Head-Banger" wrote 1/4th of song's lyrics & music to those with friend-of-band Mao.
Guitarist/keyboardist Miyako "The Golden Touch" has written music-only for about half their songs. No lyrics.
Midori "Crazy Shredder" has written music to 2, lyrics to 1 of those, "Dancing With The Devil", music to "Glory to the World" with Mao.
Haruna "little BIG Engine" has written music & lyrics to 1 song, the fantastic "Bravehearted", Asami assisted translation to English.
Asami "The One & Only Voice" has written all lyrics, with the exception of those noted above. Now she is also contributing music to several songs in collaboration with Mao.
Mao has written music-only to several songs. No lyrics.
One song, "Holy War" has lyrics credited to "LOVEBITES" and music to Mao.
All songs are arranged by LOVEBITES which I find significant in that Mao is a keyboardist and the band is primarily a 'guitar band' so it is their guitar arrangements, techniques used and Haruna's drum arrangements that make LOVEBITES "METAL" (imo.)

Midori and Miyako are easily the best PAIR of female guitarists to be in the same band, and honestly should be among the legendary male pairings as well.

Miyako is also a woman who talks very normally when she gets off the stage. She said she was nervous because it was very difficult to Guitar playing , and it must be very hard when you compose 60% of the music, play the piano, and perform on stage. By the way, Haruna, the drummer, is called Harupi by her Japanese fans.

I'd remove the qualifier "female". This was a tribute song to Iron Maiden, modeled after "Aces High". Play the two songs back to back, and the girls are heavier, faster, cleaner, and more melodic than the boys. That's not to put down Maiden--but as in every field, things progress. You want female guitarists? Japan is crawling with them. Try Saki with Mary's Blood, Haruka Noma with Asterism, Hazuki (with Nemophila, opposite Saki), Yuki with D-Drive, Narumi (x-Destrose), Lisa-X, Tomo-Zo with Gacharic Spin, Ayumi and Misaki with Bridear, Sakura with Hagane....Heck---here is a list of around 40 Japanese female-led bands. Knock yourself out!
Japan has had an active all-girl metal scene since at least 1981. This is a starter list of all-female (or in eight cases, mixed gender) metal, punk, hard-rock and post-rock bands, with founding dates where I know them. It's alphabetical, except for the first three, which are at the top of the list for historical reasons. They set the table for the explosion of Japanese female hard-rock, punk and metal bands. Note: I have tried to pick clips that are reactor-friendly because they are high quality and are representative of the band's style.
You are likely to get suggestions mainly for Band-Maid, Babymetal, Lovebites, Nemophila, Unlucky Morpheus and Wagakki Band. You can’t go wrong with any of those, but I hope you will find time to check out more of the bands on this list. They are all worth the time and deserve the love, and many will really surprise you. My personal favorites include Asterism, Bridear, Doll$Boxx, existTtrace, Hanabie, Mary’s Blood, Sokoninaru and Tricot. Ok, the list:
Show-Ya (1981 The original female J-metal band, founded before Metallica-this is from their 24th (!) anniversary concert-and they are still touring) They belong in any rock or music hall of fame: “I am the Storm” th-cam.com/video/oJ_5Gv3vFjQ/w-d-xo.html
Shonen Knife (1981 The world’s first bubblegum punk band. They have done several world tours. They also perform as a Ramones tribute band called Osaka Ramones): th-cam.com/video/w9LUlYzOiWs/w-d-xo.html
Destrose (2005; This band was never stable, but has become almost mythic in Japanese metal history, because so many great bands spun out of Destrose, including Lovebites--you will recognize the drummer and bassist): th-cam.com/video/G1VwEGHPIhs/w-d-xo.html
Aldious (2008 Glamorous and kick-ass rockers-one of the first generation all-girl metal bands, along with Destrose) th-cam.com/video/sfkJT0rra-8/w-d-xo.html
Asterism (2013 Not all female, but will melt your face off- the guitarist Haruka Noma is off the charts talented and still a teen-ager) th-cam.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/w-d-xo.html
Babymetal (2010 The flagship “Kawaii metal” band and the most well-known Japanese metal act outside of Japan. Combining “Kawaii” (cute) Japanese pop tropes over thunderous heavy metal backing) th-cam.com/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/w-d-xo.html
Band-Maid (2013 OK, there are 100+ great songs by them. Here is a live clip): th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html
Bridear (2011 Heavy, technical-and their tiny bassist also growls): th-cam.com/video/LQIDqudG_DQ/w-d-xo.html
Cyntia (2011 Second wave, hard, heavy, but with prog and symphonic touches)
    th-cam.com/video/FnhObh5i_3U/w-d-xo.html
D-Drive (2009 Instrumental progressive metal and fusion; Mixed gender. Extraordinary, technical dual lead guitars featuring Yuki and Seiji) Here is a lockdown version of their 2009 hit “Cassis Orange”: th-cam.com/video/Mi0ykRvZ1LA/w-d-xo.html
Disqualia (2015 Destrose spin-out, featuring Narumi, one of the best guitarists of this generation, and Hazuki, then an up-and-coming talent who is now a member of Nemophila) th-cam.com/video/-M5zBKrTJRg/w-d-xo.html
Doll$Boxx (2012 Insane mix of metal, electropop, and god-knows what else; a collaboration between Fuki and Gacharic Spin) th-cam.com/video/mu2z4Uf9Tgc/w-d-xo.html
existTtrace (2003: Visual Kei, progressive, technical, some death-metal and goth touches) th-cam.com/video/Oz1Lv8XGBF0/w-d-xo.html
Fate Gear (2015 Super-group, one of the Destrose spinouts-continually changing lineup built around Mina (g) and (until very recently) Erica (b); this single video is one of the best in this list): th-cam.com/video/tLQbsoKQN-0/w-d-xo.html
Gacharic Spin (2009 Founded by two high school classmates, Hana (Dr, Vo, multiple instruments) and Koga (B) who had already been in other bands (and was previously a lingerie model). Everything from punk-pop to heavy metal and progressive; highly technical) Here is their first video, with original singer Armmy (d. 2015): th-cam.com/video/vfzIt20_xXg/w-d-xo.html
Gallhammer (2003 Black/Death/Doom/Punk; this is from their 2007 UK/Europe tour; co-founder Vivien Slaughter is now making electronic ambient music!): th-cam.com/video/2fTiyOO1nZE/w-d-xo.html
Galmet (2006 Straight-up death metal, but in prom dresses) th-cam.com/video/PnvrOLeRt-I/w-d-xo.html
Ganglion (2010 Metal with a hint of electronica)
    th-cam.com/video/q9j4t3Ms-Sg/w-d-xo.html
Hagane (2018 Started with Sakura posting blistering metal guitar covers on youtube while in high-school, and the rest of the girls finding her; full lineup came together in 2019)
    th-cam.com/video/k8NTRJ_yTxY/w-d-xo.html
Hanabie (2019 Kawaii death metal, deathcore, thrash. Technical. Most frequent comment is “That’s nuts.” One of the bands to watch in 2021) th-cam.com/video/G18yyvPCiTM/w-d-xo.html
    Kakumei (2013--see Trident, below)
Lisa-X Band (Prodigy 16-year-old guitarist Lisa-X and a rotating cast of fellow bandmembers, often including Hazuki (of Disqualia and Nemophila). th-cam.com/video/mN_oLqTka6M/w-d-xo.html
Lovebites (2016 Modern Power, Speed, Thrash and Heavy Metal. Already making a global splash. Here is their most famous official MV-it’s even better than Shadowmaker IMO) th-cam.com/video/hLFelI93VkM/w-d-xo.html
Mardelas (2014 Another spin-off from Destrose; mixed male/female; leader Marina Hebiishi has one of the best voices in the biz) th-cam.com/video/Wd8P7wTnWJs/w-d-xo.html
Mary's Blood (2008 The first major Destrose Spin-out) Jedi-level lineup. Here, Saki murders her guitar without breaking any nails: th-cam.com/video/MLM2unV0kwU/w-d-xo.html
Maximum the Hormone (1998 Crazy, chaotic mashups of deathcore, nu-metal, pop and high-speed rapping. Co-founder Nao (drums) is the female member of the band. She has been a major influence on female drummers throughout Japan.) This clip captures just a bit of the madness: 予襲復讐 (Yoshu Fukushu) th-cam.com/video/beN5ep5MrdY/w-d-xo.html
MergingMoon (2010 Mix of prog and melodic death metal. Vocalist U is Japan’s terrifying answer to Tatiana of Jinjer) th-cam.com/video/sIL-vgHNOu0/w-d-xo.html
Mutant Monster (2008 Punk-pop, really good at it)
    th-cam.com/video/Fd6ymMR40NU/w-d-xo.html
Narumi (solo prog-rock and fusion compositions-a change of pace from a master guitarist) th-cam.com/video/cRyCaHjwIgk/w-d-xo.html
Nemophila: (2019 Supergroup of Mary's Blood guitarist Saki, ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu, ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki, ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam.) th-cam.com/video/lh-dVLKP314/w-d-xo.html
54 Nude Honeys (1992 Early Japanese punk-they toured the UK and Europe, and reports are that their crowds were as crazy as the crowds at Sex Pistols concerts) th-cam.com/video/jHnJSoGN5Mk/w-d-xo.html
Otoboke Beaver (2009 thrash punk, way out there): th-cam.com/video/fkWfFXnLpYg/w-d-xo.html
Rie aka Suzaku (instrumental guitar) th-cam.com/video/m6Z2GD5SqNs/w-d-xo.html
Sokoninaru (2011 Progressive metal, math rock, extremely technical; male/female cofounders)
    th-cam.com/video/MVxl0zXZBR4/w-d-xo.html
Sonic Lover Reckless (2018 Special project of Miyako Watanabe, one of Lovebites’ two incomparable guitarists) th-cam.com/video/DXZ-qhxd1VI/w-d-xo.html
Telecide (2016 Metalcore, aggressive and melodic at the same time) th-cam.com/video/keq-7ZCluFc/w-d-xo.html
Tricot (2010 Post-progressive math-rock, highly technical with crazy time signatures and polyrhythms) th-cam.com/video/P_B_GalsJrE/w-d-xo.html
Trident (formerly Kakumei, renamed in 2020 with some personnel changes. Evolved from pop-punk to thrashier hard rock; several lineup changes but the bassist and lead singer have been constants) th-cam.com/video/9k9txMouU34/w-d-xo.html
Unlucky Morpheus (2008 Female leads Fuki (vo) and Jill (violin). This band is a deep well unto itself, they cross many subgenres of metal; Fuki and Jill also do other projects and Fuki is lead for at least two other bands including Doll$Boxx, above) th-cam.com/video/V8i_QhOgsKw/w-d-xo.html
Wagakki Band (2012 Folk-Metal fusion band, all jedi-level musicians, half of them play traditional Japanese instruments and the other half play standard metal instruments) This song was originally written for a virtual (AI) singer, referred to as a Vocaloid
    th-cam.com/video/Q2meWkWqc-I/w-d-xo.html
Yōsei Teikoku (1997 Rock-Folk-Metal-Electronica fusion ensemble) Set up in a fictional Fairy Empire, led by founder Yui, they have done a lot of anime themes and sound-tracks and also perform original songs live, in character.
    th-cam.com/video/_EeYxtAeaX4/w-d-xo.html
There are many more (others that come to mind are BRATS, Drop’s, Stereopony, Scandal, Princess Princess, which all tend more in the pop direction, and the Bang-Dream projects, which are live groups based on Manga series. And of course, there are other female-fronted Kawaii-metal groups like Ladybaby and Ironbunny, to name the two best-known after Babymetal. If you find others you think belong on this list, please let me know. And if you find a dead link, also please let me know so I can fix the list. Thank you!

    LOVEBITES - The Crusade lyrics:
Walking in shadows, immersed in deception
While hiding our agony, faking a smile
Pulling the trigger to lose my religion
All of the truth ends up murdered by lies
Dancing with demons, they seem to be fond of me
Let’s start the ritual for the revenge
Pulling the trigger to burn non-believers
Being the odd one out drives me insane
    I’m a fool in disguise
    You’d never realize
    Found myself in its song
    Where else would I belong?
    Break free
Fight to live on, forever strong
    Break free
Heart made of steel, show me what’s real
    Deep down
My heartbeat and blood burning with love
    Deep down
It’s time to begin the crusade
Wanting an answer, but losing myself
While I’m hiding my anger behind empty smiles
Pulling the trigger to punish the traitors
All of your words were just nothing but lies
Crawling in chaos, I’m losing my breath, tell me
What do you see through your sinister eyes?
Pulling the trigger to kill the oppressors
I had no choice but to hide when I cried

    Found myself in its song
    Where else would I belong?
    Break free
Always believe, hope is the key
    Break free
Heart made of steel, knight of ordeal
    Deep down
    Destroy the restraints, never again
    Deep down
It’s time to begin the crusade
    Break free
Fight to live on, forever strong
    Break free
Heart made of steel, show me what’s real
    Deep down
My heartbeat and blood burning with love
    Deep down
Be true to yourself and your beliefs
It’s time to get up and breath

Just dive into Japanese female rock and metal and you'll be staggered by the talent you'll come across. Having said that, it must be noted that Miyako is a once in a generation genius. She's not only a staggeringly good guitarist but also an extraordinary pianist as well as being the main song writer for the band. Don't be fooled by her "ice queen" persona onstage. Offstage she's actually a complete sweetheart... very humble, a bit shy and a total geek. She was perhaps a little more restrained than usual on this occasion since she was four months pregnant when they played this show. That'll be something for her kid to tell people when he or she grows up.... "I was onstage for my first metal concert five months before I was even born!" She's had her baby now although I have no idea whether it was a boy or a girl. Maybe someone in the Wolf Pack knows.

Not knocking them but most are fixated on M&M but if it were not for Miho and Haruna being rock solid holding it down like they do there is no way M&M would shine as bright. Signs Of Deliverance has one of the greatest dual guitar sections ever and it works because H&M are holding it all together. For me Haruna's drive is the key thing in all LB songs. Glad to see you recognize that.

I'd say that Lovebites have surpassed by far what I - more than 30 years ago - had hoped Phantom Blue could become, if they wrote heavier, longer and more complex songs with longer guitar solos. Still the guitar solos on their debut showed that Michelle Meldrum (RIP) and Nicole Couch knew how to shred very well (which way back then was - as regards female metal guitarists - something unheard-of), just check out the guitar solo part around the 2-minutes-mark in their song "Frantic Zone": th-cam.com/video/iVpolsfQX_M/w-d-xo.html

Miyako's only rivals are Kanami from Band Maid and Saki from Nemophila and Mary's Blood. Oh and of course Midori is awesome too. She can play faster than Miyako, but Miyako has a little bit more "soul" and "emotion" in her playing.

    • @gatograto
      @gatograto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree, but Midori's solos in Epilogue and A Frozen Serenade are quite touching. She doesn't show it much but she's got a big soul.

Rivals? You do realise they simply choose to play fast and intricate.professional guitarist for the most part, can all play like this, its just that people choose different genres. Most don't play progressive, because the market is small
Love bites is great music, but They are not very popular, because our tastes are not shared by many

Miyako's taps and sweeps on this song were what turned me on to Lovebites in the first place. Bloodstock 2018.

Nothing is wrong with the bands performance at Bloodstock the sound on the recording is utter garbage. 100% not the bands fault. Compare the sound of Haruna's drums on BS vs any other recording. I think her sound suffered the most. Was a piviotal moment for them but the recording is horrid.

I agree with you that Miyako's one of the best guitarists around. There are only a couple who I think are "better" (I realize this is subjective), and one of them is Midori. Traditionally, I'm more a fan of guitarists who have a bluesier, more emotional type of playing style, who are more about "feeling", and that's Miyako, but Midori is just so precise, creative, and technical, she's way more than just a "speed demon" or "shred goddess" as people often call her (even though she's those too). She constantly blows me away. Well, they both do, but Midori I think is underrated by some Lovebites fans who seem to think Miyako's a genius and Midori's just there for when they need fast fingers. And then of course there's Saki, my guitar hero. She does things I can't even wrap my head around sometimes, and half the time she seems to be just making it up as she goes, like it's nothing at all.

  • @katafalkk
    @katafalkk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4
