Eight years after beginning The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero softcover series, the ultimate Omnibus Hardcover collection has arrived! Let’s check it out.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover is an unparalleled celebration of the art of A Real American Hero! Already own the softcovers? Give this officially licensed hardcover a look, it is bigger and better in every way.
First, bigger. The original softcover books are 8" x 11” tall, and the slipcase is 8.5" x 11.5” tall. The new Omnibus Hardcover is 13.5” x 14.5” and the clamshell case pushes it to an astounding 14" x 15"!
Next, better. This hardcover isn't just taller and wider, it is packed with new and remastered content!
This comprehensive celebration of the painted art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero features every carded figure, vehicle, playset, poster and peripheral product featuring painted art released from 1982-1994, plus an unprecedented look at some unreleased paintings that never made it through to production.
The softcover set totaled 460 pages. The new Omnibus Hardcover is a mammoth 712 pages! So how did we fill these new pages?
We’ve been on a mission to document the stories of the folks that created this timeless artwork. We’ve traveled to Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Queens, Manhattan, Connecticut, South Carolina, Florida, Chicago and more to interview folks like Kirk Bozigian (former G.I.JOE Brand Manager from 1982-1986 and Vice President of Boys Toys from 1990-1995), Ron Rudat (former Hasbro designer and creator of the first six years of G.I.JOE figures from 1982-1987), Mark Pennington (former Hasbro designer and creator of the next three years of G.I.JOE figures from 1987-1989), Ed Morrill (former Partner of CLS&M, the packaging firm that created G.I.JOE packaging from 1969-1989), Doug Hart (former Hasbro artist responsible for the lion's share of late 80s and early 90s G.I.JOE paintings!), Vincent D'Alleva (former G.I.JOE Brand Manager from 1990-1994), and Bill Merklein (contract sculptor that crafted over 70 G.I.JOE figures from 1983-1989).
We conducted comprehensive interviews and solved some of the unsolved packaging mysteries that have puzzled collectors for decades. Not only do these creators’ stories fill the pages of the Omnibus Hardcover, you can hear their stories first hand with The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero DVD and Blu-ray Digipack!
The Omnibus Hardcover features offset lithograph printing throughout and a beautiful 95# cover wrapped on a 120pt. board with scuff resistant lamination.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover features a wraparound collage of paintings by every major illustrator that contributed to the brand.
The massive two-sided dust jacket measures 38" wide by 14.5" tall, and you'll be able to take it off and frame it. A modified design is printed on the inside of the dust jacket with logos and text removed, so you'll have an unobscured look at the wonderful art!
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero also includes a 14" x 15" clamshell case! This clamshell case was designed as an homage to the 1982 Official Collector Display Case.
Finally, The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero features a Limited Edition Art Portfolio measuring 23" wide by 14.5" tall that is packed with 24 unadorned art prints: twelve selected by the Kickstarter backers and another twelve selected by the editors. These 11” x 14” offset lithograph prints have been meticulously restored and are ready to frame.
The clamshell case, book, folder and prints weigh in at over 19 pounds! You have to hold this set in your hands to believe it.
The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover ships in December of 2023!

My wife ordered me a copy of the book last week and it arrived today. I knew the book was big, but I wasn’t prepared for how massive it is!! I haven’t had a chance to go through it all yet, but what I’ve looked at and read so far is nothing short of amazing. It brought back so many incredible memories from my childhood. This really is a book that no Joe collector should be without. If you loved the toys as a kid and still have a fondness for them today, do yourself a favor and get this book!!! It’s pricey, but worth every single penny. The love and attention the guys at 3D Joes put into making this book should be its own story. It oozes through every page. And it’s presented, as it should be, like a museum piece. I can’t wait to dig into the book more tomorrow. I’m gonna have the G.I. Joe cartoon on in the background as I get completely lost in this monument to the greatest toy line ever created.

EDIT: Aaaand I just came home to find a very large and very heavy box on my front porch! Holy smokes! This thing is an absolute beast! The love and care that was put into the creation of this book is obvious. I mean, it's a bloody masterpiece. The quality of the pages, cover and binding (my God the binding!) is off the charts. The vibrant colors, glossy pages, the case, THE PRINTS. Hats off to all involved in the creation of this mighty tome. I cannot wait to dig into this!

We should all be so thankful of people like you that want to preserve things like this. Great art can be lost forever (or repainted on top of!) if dedicated fans aren't on top of it. Then you take the extra steps make sure the best possible versions are scanned for the book. The fans at Christmas at the front and back bookends is a great touch. I know, every generation says this, but Christmas back then, with toys like G.I Joe, it was truly magical. Nothing like your cousins at the house opening up nearly every new Joe and you go for your biggest box and it's the U.S Flagg! Every kid in the house cheering!!

That's what I thought this was! REPRINT THE STORIES!
In the early teens I followed blogs about British comics and they'd always have some excited article about how some long cancelled comic was "BACK!!!", and it would turn out to be a book with a few random episodes from the middle of serialised stories, often with fake wear and tear to the pages so it looked like it was an old relic. Clueless, savage vermin.

Finally got to the end of the video... First off, fantastic stuff, clearly a real labour of love. Secondly, my ears pricked up when you mentioned what your next project COULD be... I'm from Scotland, I grew up with Action Force (the old one), Action Force: International Heroes (rebranded G.I. Joe) and I still recall all of the hoops Hasbro UK had to jump through in order to change Action Force into G.I. Joe for the UK market. tl;dr I would very much like to read a book covering G.I. Joe outside of the USA.

1:37:22 Hey man, not every kid’s parents could buy them GI Joe toys for Christmas. When I was growing up in the late 80s we were lucky if anyone in my family could get one present for Christmas. I used to make my own toys out of colored craft papers and glue because my parents couldn’t buy us toys. In the early 90s, all my parents could get me and my brothers were cheap Lanard figures sold at discount stores. We loved our Lanard figures just as much as you loved your fancy expensive GI Joes. I had toys, I was grateful and that was enough for me as a kid. Lanard offered cheap toys so kids in my situation could play with toys. When you throw shades at Lanard, you throw shades at my childhood and kids like me as if you were better than us. You’re not better than me.

    • @3djoes
      @3djoes  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Damn bro, you unpacked a lot of baggage there 😂
All I said was The Corps was a knock off of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero, and that’s 100% accurate.
This isn’t about the wealth divide or elitism, as you’d like to make it out to be. It’s about one company suing another and winning, and the losing company turning the tables years later. That’s a good story!
Point of fact, Lanard launched their line as “Gung-Ho” in 1987 and was sued by Hasbro in 1988, hence the name change to The Corps.
Lanard copied a lot more than just the Gung-Ho name though - they copied the formula Hasbro set up for figure articulation, packaging, cross-sell catalogs and more. And of course they made some “knock off” figures too. All facts. Sorry if these facts hurt your feelings.
Read more on the case here: m.openjurist.org/858/f2d/70
For Lanard to sue Hasbro over the Battle Corps name, to protect their The Corps (non trademarked) name 6 years later was indeed a humorous turn of events.

Amazing! Great job on putting this together. The book looks fantastic! It was such a great time to be a kid back then. Between my friend and I, we tried to collect almost everything in the toy series up until around the 1989 line and would have massive battles. The character designs still look great today! What a cool time the 80s was to be an artist. 😎

When every time I see these kind of G.I. Joe designs in the book. I've been thinking about if they need a proper live action G.I. Joe series with characters and vehicles in their classic designs and I wouldn't even mind a story line set in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s with the classic characters and in the 2000s to 2020s they have to create new characters specially for the live action series. I wasn't really a fan of the other gi joe designs from all the live action GI Joe films include Snake Eyes anyway that wasn't the G.I. Joe I grew up with and loved. that GI Joe in your book is the ones I grew up and love the most.

Wow... incredible! I bought all the softcover "Art of G.I.Joe" books and posters from 3D Joes back in 2018 and was so impressed with the quality of the products that I backed the Kickstarter for this omnibus sight unseen when the campaign first launched in early 2022. Since then, I haven't been paying much attention to the book's progress other than responding to surveys from the team (Carson is great at keeping backers up to date and soliciting input). Today was the first time I've actually taken a look at what I paid for... and I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY! The pictures are great but what impressed me the most was the content. I had no idea that there would be so much to read and consume! I thought it was just going to be a big picture book! Very happy that I backed this project and am looking forward to receiving it!

Yes, over the years as I’ve formed friendships with the creators and endeavored to build their Creator Profiles on 3DJoes, I’ve amassed so many amazing stories that needed to be told. This book was a great opportunity to share some of those!
I’m working on editing / polishing their video interviews for the Digipack now and it’s such an honor to be tasked with sharing their stories and preserving their legacy.
Thank you again for the support, and the kind words!

Everything from 1982-1985 has been redone: all MOC figure photographs, all vehicle and playset box scans, and all restoration work. This has brought the first two volumes worth of figures and vehicles (1982-1985) up to the standards we started achieving with Volume 3.
