Roland XV-88 synthesizer demo

  • Most of the Roland XV-88 demo videos on TH-cam are either eye-wateringly badly videoed, or useless for getting to know the instrument; usually both. So I decided to make a demo video of me noodling on an XV-88 that I recently serviced back to full playability.
    I selected the patches pretty randomly, though I began with the PremierGrand piano from the SRX-02 Concert Piano expansion card. Gotta begin a synth workstation demo with the grand piano, right?
    The XV-88 was Roland's flagship keyboard synthesizer before the release of the first Fantom series. It's essentially the keyboard version of the XV-3080 module. The 88-key weighted keyboard features channel (not poly) aftertouch, which you'll hear in this demo. It also has the Roland D-Beam controller, which modifies the sound when you wave your hand over the detector.
    I hope you enjoy the video - thanks for watching!

    SRX-02 is a great add on for XV-88. Cheers

    I love my XV88, bought it in 2000 and it needs servicing. Some hammers need to be fixed, which I do. It isn’t hard. I would like to replace the keyboard with a Fatar keyboard, but that might be too costly. Thank you for your video.

    How many of your own sounds can you register in to it's memory, ??!!.

    These sounds hold up pretty well. V-piano is still their best offering but still pretty inaccessible price wise. Ive been using Supernatural Integra7 piano for years, still happy with those even though v-piano is still better.
    Roland just announced a new "Earth piano" so it will be interesting to hear that. Maybe a more affordable v-piano?

    Beautiful instrument. I had mine serviced, too. Had to glue back in a lot of the key weights. For some reason, the plastic weight holders became brittle. Now, I just need to figure out what to do with the whine of the LCD screen. Other than that, the instrument is as close to perfect as they can get.

      Yes, these Roland key weights do eventually snap off due to the plastic going brittle. I've seen that with the RD series too. A lot of plastics do that - it's due to the gradual evaporation of the esters, which are a class of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible. Glad you like your XV-88! Mine's still here, though I've had it listed for sale for a while. I don't need it - I have a Korg M3-73 as my main synth. :)

      @@danbennett4192 I have two XV-88's. One from new since 2001, which had developed LCD screen whine. The other I got recently from Ebay, which sounds absolutely perfect; however, as I said before, a lot of key weights had fallen off, and I had to glue them back in. Consequently I end up paying the A-80, which hasn't had any issues yet. I like the new Fantom 8, but I haven't bought it yet, for the obvious reason, the price. :) Korg Nautilus 88-key version is also very nice.

    So, half of the times the FX do nothing.. I'll just stick to my Fantom, even though, I suspect, this has a better keybed..

    With an Ultimate cloud membership I certainly have access to all these sounds, however it did not come with a talented pair of hands as we see here.😁🎶🎹🎶Play On

    Does it not have brass, trombone, trumpet, sax, tenor and alto sax?

    • @danbennett4192
      @danbennett4192  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it does. However, I usually don't use those sounds (on *any* synth!) so I didn't bother playing them in this demo.

    • @recordstreetband6187
      @recordstreetband6187 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @danbennett4192 it's unfortunate that you don't demonstrate those sounds because most cover bands, including artists that write, arrange, and produce music use, strings, horn sections, and organ in their sessions. The piano is a given. I have an acoustic piano for recording sessions. Besides, most keyboards have a decent piano. In my band we play a lot of old school R&B, classic rock, disco...etc...so the main sounds we use are string, horns, organ and piano. Since you're demonstrating a keyboard, you shouldn't be prejudice against sounds you don't use. That's like if a band went out to play and got a request for a song, and the leader says, "we don't play that cause I don't like it." "Well sir, do you have anything in that genre of music?" No, cause I don't like that style of music." You're demonstrating that keyboard to the world when you post on TH-cam. And your video may be the only one posted demonstrating that keyboard.

      for the strings and orchestral sound you can have expansion boards like srx6 and srx4 that you might appreciate. in general orchestral sounds are ok. I really liked the soprano sax on mine

    ITS JUST A WEIGHTED XP30 RIGHT ?

    • @danbennett4192
      @danbennett4192  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not quite. The XP-30 is based on the JV synth engine, whereas the XV-88 is basically a keyboarded version of the later XV-3080. So I guess it's one generation newer than the XP series keyboards. But having said that... you're not far wrong with that assessment. :) This web page goes into a lot of detail: www.donsolaris.com/?p=404

    • @danbennett4192
      @danbennett4192  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and one more thing: The XV-88 has aftertouch, which I don't think the XP-30 has. And the XV-88 has the D-Beam too, which is also not present on the XP-30.

      @@danbennett4192the xp30 has an aftertouch but it's so insensitive that it's useless.
