What My Cockatiel Eats

  • Taki is our 7 month old Lutino cockatiel. We're in the middle of converting him to a healthier diet, and we are convinced he is the world's pickiest bird. He came home eating NOTHING but millet (even though he had access to fresh fruits and veggies, pellets, and a seed mix). We've been trying for four months to get him on a pelleted diet. This is what we're doing right now to help him transition and to keep him healthy during the whole process.
If you'd like to learn to make your own sprouts, please check out this great tutorial by FlockTalk (and subscribe while you're at it!): • Fresh Sprouts | DIY
This is the sprout mix I based my custom blend off of- sproutpeople.org/lil-bird-spr...
His "regular seed" that he came home eating consists of millet, sunflower seed, safflower seed in that order. I'm getting him used to sprouts by sprouting those for him. I purchase that from a local aviary, but most seed mixes contain the same seeds. These are EXTREMELY fatty and high in carbs for your bird. Millet, for instance, has over 78g of carbs per 100g serving. Sprouting them greatly cuts down on the amount of carbs per gram and increases vitamin content.
My "grains, beans, and legumes" sprout mix contains (from Whole Foods) equal parts of the following: Black lentils, French blue lentils, Red lentils, Adzuki beans, Mung beans, Brown flax, Gold flax, White quinoa, Amaranth, and Wheat. I currently keep the sprouted millet separate from the mix so that I can control the amount in the mix depending on how many of the other sprouts Taki is eating. If he won't eat most of them yet, I use more millet. If he's eating most of the sprouts, I use less. I purchase 2 pounds (around 4 dry cups) of this mix for $6 and it would last me around 6 weeks if I were to serve him 3T/day.

i cook up quinoa, drain the water then mix in crumbled pellets and a bit of bird seed. then store it in a air tight container in the fridge. He really loves the stuff. A bit of chopped up rocket and spinach on the top for some healthy greens.

My bird eats his harrison fine with a sprinkle of seeds for now, but eventually he will be eating just pellet and hopefully veggies. Your bird is such a sweetie and it's so good to see a channel giving the best tips on handling our feather babies 💓

Over the years, I've probably rescued a dozen cockatiels plus having my own birds. Most of the rescues had been on unhealthy, seed-only diets and all were converted to pellets and tamed before rehoming them. Some of these birds had never been out of their cages, so the first order of business was a trip to an avian vet, followed by a one month quarantine. On the advice of two avian vets, I started mixing their seeds with Harrison's High Potency SUPER FINE pellets. Since the super fine size pellets were about the size and color of seeds ,the 'tiels started eating them instead of the seeds. After converting to nutrient rich pellets, the birds would usually have a molt after a few months and it was great to see new healthy feathers coming in rapidly. Cockatiels are very fussy eaters and one time I accidentally bought the Fine sized pellets instead of the Super Fine size and the birds wouldn't touch them. Good luck getting most 'tiels to eat fruit (it's not in their natural diet) and many don't like veggies unless they were offered when the birds were young. Quite by accident, I discovered that my birds love cucumbers, scrambled eggs( just barely warm for safety) and carrot sticks, since they usually check out my plate for unsalted nuts. One time there were some thick sliced cucumbers on my dinner plate and two of my birds started eating them hungrily. Now when I want them to try something new, I just put it on my plate. My cockatiels are fully flighted, going on fourteen years old and are extremely healthy The doors to their cages have never been closed and they fly to me when I call their names or when they want head scratches. One of them, Angel, a whitefaced male is sound asleep on my arm while I'm typing this.

@@Lae-zel_enthusiast usually I would mix seeds with the pellets and slowly transition the tiel’s diet to pellets, I started put buy mixing pellets with seed, veggies, and some fruit, maybe try some fruity pellets first.

My 7-month old cockatiel named Soy doesn't really like pellets. All he eat is the baby food "Cerelac" like the Gerber in the US; he loves eggs and ripe banana though.
I wish I could make him eat pellets and sprouts too.

You should try to add some nuts into it. If they just eat the nuts, try giving them a treat after they finish a bowl

Any temperature you’d be comfortable giving to a human baby should be fine :) My birds prefer and drink room temperature water, and that’s what I find easiest to give them. There are birds who enjoy drinking warm (not scalding hot) bird safe herbal teas (like chamomile), cold bird safe fruit juices, cold water, etc. It’s up to their preference!

Alex Guillen I’m no bird expert, but I have done a lot of research. (Like everyone should) and birds need a balanced diet of bird pellets fruits and veggies, and I’d say 10% seeds. NEVER FEED A BIRD AVOCADO! It’s dangerous and can kill a bird. Some safe foods are, carrots, cucumbers, bananas, quinoa, scrambled eggs, and other things. You MUST research everything before getting a bird, such as what to do with a blood feather and such! Search online for safe fruits and veggies, but make sure that it says that it’s safe on more than one website, to be safe. Always supply a cuttle bone! It’s provides calcium!
