Asian Boss I appreciate you taken the time to interview N.Korea women and I thank them both for their story. When women are living in an isolation such as N.Korea the cruel treatments goes beyond human treatment.They live in a silent state of mind and have block their mind in order to survive.This is happening world wide not just in N.Korea where women have no voices. As a nation of people we must speak up about this, to protect future generations of miss treatment of women as well as men and children. Are We Not Human? It seem that the animal kindom have a better understanding of treating their kind. Human beings is said to be the higher form of intelligent. I wonder if so.
before women go into the military, the parents put them on the IUD because "they don't know when their daughters might get raped"

They're tough. They been in the military 10 years and been dealing with a lot of shit in their life. Hell, I only served like 6 years and a half and there no way I would be able to do the shit they went through. Probably just shoot myself. That how tough these North Korean women are.

I think I could relate to this so maybe I could help answering. When you've experienced so much painful things in your life and already suceed escaping from them, crying is the least thing to do bc it just makes you feel ungrateful for yourself. Like, I'm happy now, I'm alive and I don't need any sadness to ruin the feeling. At least it's what I felt years ago when my family were freed from debts and
My parents divorced after 23 years of painful marriage. It's like "Finally, it's over". I don't say they aren't supposed to cry, but, imagine.. maybe they're just so tired of crying over and over again when it happened and now they only wanted to tell the stories without having to remember the actual feeling.

I understand, from our perspective it is hard to understand women are treated as less than animals, just like objects. How do these women survive with no mental illnesses?
In Germany or the US some can get already bulimia, depressions or suicidal if somebody says bad words at them in a text message. Any way, Asia is still widely a patriarch area in the world, even though I personally consider the Asian women being tougher than men here.
Peter Kroll it definitely is a very difficult subject, it’s seems like in that society it’s very much normalised, at least judging from these women’s stories and that’s heartbreaking. I’m also curious if they would do a follow up with these women about their experiences in South Korea
Of course there are mental repercussions, didn't you watch the video? One of the rape victims jumped out of a train, another killed her superiors before killing herself, and a woman jumped off a 4-story balcony. Any concept of modern mental illness simply doesn't get diagnosed, and the person will die without saying anything, and no one will know anything.

Yeah, I probably would have started crying and given her a hug and not let her go.. So glad these two heroes managed to make it to safety, but it's so sad thinking of the millions who can't.

Why are they strong? While in South Korea (an assumption), they are being showered with praise. Where is the risk? When women suffer, most people (men and women) will pay attention and may even act to stop or at least mitigate the situation. When men suffer, no one cares. We are predisposed to protect women. Men are disposable. Eh.

There's pretty much no live in America either with all the women being indoctrinated to hate men and to think everything is rape. Women of America should pay closer attention to women of North Korea or United Arab Emirates and learn what is real abuse.

I love how educational this is. But as woman (no I'm not trying to do a feminist rant) I'm almost horrified to see how many men make such rude comments about women being raped... It makes me scared to be a woman in this world sometimes. I just want to say to all the good guys out there. When you see a man saying stuff like this please speak up... This is what's giving women bad impressions of men.
There are a lot more bad man than good man to be honest, but in a country full of bad man? I will commit suicide myself if I was born in NK.
In my estimation, it's about 50/50. But definitely agreed on the suicide, and I'd make sure to take some of them out with me like that woman in the military.

Sometimes it makes me scared to be a woman in my country.I'm south korean.Although it's better than north Korean society treated women as objects very often.And there are so many sexual crimes.Everytime i use subway or washroom i'm always worrying about camera.Few days ago my sister told me one of the female students in her school found out 3 hidden cameras at washroom.

I almost cried. Women around the world whether developed or non developed are being harrassed my crazy and uneducated misogynst. It is so sad to hear in such an era and generation there are still countries like north korea. Hope for a better future.

I hope that one day, men will be able to listen to women talk about these issues and not try to dominate the conversation and diminish the struggles women go through. I also hope that North Korea can one day have a culture that values its women the way they deserve to be valued.

Well said. I'm getting the attitude from some of these men that of you talk about your sexual assault and rape you are a man hater and a feminist which is further from the truth. Women should not have to be silenced anymore. Rape and Sexual Assault of any kind is a criminal offence. It's against the law. The fact that women get blamed all the time for thier take and sexual assault. What was she wearing? Did she entice you? Did she lead you on? No. It should not matter what you wear or how you act. A woman can be walking naked and it's not her fault. Why isn't about the perp? Shouldn't they be taught to keep it in thier pants? To listen when no means no.

I really love that we could hear the voices of older North Korean women. I can't believe how strong they both must be and how much they've been forced to adapt to survive.

These women are amazing. To be able to understand and accept that the whole system is responsible and not just the men themselves. That really touched me. Of course those men are responsible for their actions, and nothing could ever excuse their behaviour.
Violence always leads to more violence. In a society where people are constantly mistreated and live in constant fear, such behaviours become the norm. A man is humiliated, harassed, maybe beaten by his boss, by soldiers or by the cops, he comes home, drinks far too much and ends up beating his own wife.
People used to beat kids in our countries not so long ago, because life was harder and domestic violence was the norm. This was seen as education. We should not forget it.
Bob Bobson yes they did beat their kids, but it was nowhere near as cruel as it is living in North Korea.
The difference is a wife isn't a child. But she's beaten as if she should be inferior. This is why women want to be seen and treated as equals.

Such a sad video but very eye opening. I have researched into quite a bit about North Korea through my university degree, but I had never heard about a North Korean women's day to day life before. Very sad but unfortunately unsurprising. I'm glad at least these women got out and hope that one day the North Korean regime will be no more. People deserve to live without such cruelties in their lives. Props to the women speaking up.

For the North Koreans, this was their "normal" life, so it's understandable that they can speak about it in such a normal tone, but as an outsider who hasn't experienced these kinds of things I tear up just from hearing these stories and I would never even dare ask them to elaborate further on anything they say.

But I have a question, I heard that north korean can't leave their country (actually I'm not really sure, sorry if I'm wrong), so I was curious on how those women got out of this country ?

A decent amount of people from DPRK defect to China then ultimately to South Korea.
They illegally escape North Korea to china. But that's one of the most dangerous times when they arrive in china because they cannot be caught by the Chinese government, or else they are forced back to North Korea. So the North Koreans can only let their guards down once they get into South Korea, where they are fully protected by the South Korean government.
i know i shouldn't be shocked since NK is known for mistreating their people, but goddamn it's still hard to hear them recount all those horrifying events. this isn't some post-apocalypse, dystopian film, it's real life for those ppl.
I didn't think it was this bad. It's almost shocking. But one thing I want to say to these women who survived the ordeal is that you are true champions and look you lived to tell. Your testimonies will help change the lives of those women still trapped in North Korea.

Thanks for doing these interviews with North Korean escapees. Seeing news about North Korea on TV is one thing, but hearing about the lives of North Koreans in their own words is completely another. It's really been shaping the way I think about NK.

After watching his incredible story of survival and escape through a box of tissues. I salute his courage. I had no idea the oppression North Koreans endure. We as Canadians and Americans do not hate North Koreans. Rather would do anything to avoid war, for it involves everyone on this planet. I wish I could help in anyway I could. Honestly. Systematic abuse can make women tough/hard for generations. I think my ancestors can attest to that. We're (African American women) considered masculine or hard without regards to why. This was more than necessary. Sometimes we can't even imagine there's a reason behind the behavior and just write it off. By sharing their stories, and us by actually listening and learning of the occurrences, we work towards lowering the percentage in ignorance. People can't take action unless they listen and they can't listen unless its being told. My outmost respect goes to all of the defectors that have made an appearance to give their testimony of some of the darkest times of their life. And as a woman myself, I furthermore respect these brave and strong woman who were willing to remember horrifying and nauseating memories to help inform the world. You're doing it right, Asian Boss

Listening reminds me of the American Slave Trade. You can't fight back , you can't run, you just have to suffer. You get beat for no reason other than "to keep you in line." I once read about a slave who said his master came and got him one day and beat him so that he would know not to do anything wrong, even though he wasn't doing anything in the first place. I don't know what's worse, slavery or this.

There is no excuse for abuse not even systemic sexism. I have to disagree everyone needs to be judged by their character, even men. When a man treat a woman horribly to the point of sexual harassment or beating them to death that is no longer a collective decision, it is an individual choice. He should bear the consequences of being a perpetrator; not dismissed for his actions because the government/culture/society allows it. On another note, people are saying it's a bad idea to make a video about being a woman in South Korea. No, the bad move here is not to do so. South Korea is still known to violate women's rights despite supposedly having foundations or laws that "protect" human rights and treaties that uphold anti-discrimination. Only those who are idiots would start an online gender war that yields no real progress, well-educated people will begin a revolution to fight for equality not division.

You should ask yourself what actually leads to the individual choice. There is nothing like collective vs individual decision. There is always a middle ground. Society not only allows this behaviour (according to this video which is NOT a source that should be looked as the only thuth) but the society can also bring up individuals to this behaviour.
Yeah these views that North Koreans have aren't due to communism but traditional Korean beliefs which also apply to South Korea. Although not as severe as North Korea, it is definitely still a problem in South Korea that needs to be addressed

Excellent and important video. This is the first I have heard of these issues. In fact, of all the horrible things I have heard that go on in North Korea [the camps, the executions, the indoctrination etc], this issue, the rights of women, is the worst, as all women are subject to this abuse. It is extremely sad to hear of this.

Thank you so much for making this series talking to North Koreans and giving us such a unique perspective on the country instead of the same stuff we hear about all the time in the news. Those women are so strong and it makes me feel ashamed to think about what western feminism has become now, while there are women truly suffering as a result of a horrible system.
