all sounded great, fireball for me with low tunings and what suits me for what I do,, brutal, balance and clarity, I'm so glad I got a FB 😏 great video🤘

I'm fascinated by that massive chord in the middle where you've got like seven fingers covering eleven strings or something.
The amps all had strengths, and some that sounded great in some parts had major weaknesses in others. All-around, I liked the Engl best. It didn't have the best great sounds, but it had the fewest weaknesses (IMO) overall.

the ENGL's ridiculously-tight/compressed sound usually isn't my first choice but for the 9 string its perfect

why dont u like it for 6 and 7 strings?

  • @johnsilver4990

The BluGuitar definitely has the most string character and pick sound which is crucial to tuning this low. The winner for me!

I feel like with your videos I usually find it hard to pick but despite all of them sounding good in their own ways, the Engl is the clear choice for me here. It just hit that sound perfectly. Deep, thick, crunchy but still extremely clear. Amazing!

Man, it never ceases to amaze me just how much of the tone is in the cab/ IR! Back in 2013 when I got my first proper amp (JCM 800 Kerry King 👌) I matched it with a bog-standard Line 6 Spider cab and it took me about a year to figure out why I just couldn't get the sound I wanted 🙄😂 Really appreciate the comparison at the end!
For my money, the Victory and JVM (although I may be slightly biased 😉) take the cake. I just adore that full-fat "British" midrange and sizzly highs with the nice chunky bass response. The ENGL sounds fucking incredible isolated though! Top-notch work as always 😁

As always, incredibly amazed by the Iridium. I have a soft spot for the EL34 EVH but the iridium my be the best sounding here... Actually pleasantly surprised but the performance of the JVM as well.

My favorites in order were the Engl, BluGuitar, and EVH. I thought was Engl was by far the best, due its clarity, tight sound, and overall balance. It sounded good across the sonic spectrum, and didn't hype any frequencies. The clear winner for me. 😎

Fireball is a beast, 5153 is hard to beat. The rest is good except Kraken. It's sounds like a cheap plugin for me.

    18:23 ENGL Fireball
    18:30 Victory VX100 Super Kraken
    18:37 Bluguitar Amp-1
    18:44 EVH 5150
    18:51 Mesa Boogie Mark V
    18:58 Marshall JVM 410h
Here we can see the huge difference in clarity on ENGL Fireball. There is no "shhhh" (hiss noise) on background, while you can hear a lot of hiss and clustered noise on other amps.
The Mesa Bogie Mark V is the second on clarity, but wayyy less agressive compared to Fireball
Dam god, there is a tone inside a mix, and a tone isolated. Its incredible how things change bewteen "in a mix" vs "isolated".
    Best: Fireball for the clarity.
    High notes riff:
    19:05 Fireball
19:19 Kraken (sounded like having small headroom, but equilibrated, maybe "weak")
    19:33 Blu
19:47 EVH (the most "rough", "sharp", almost a pain to my ears)
20:01 Mark V (the second most "rough", "sharp")
20:15 JVM (the most equilibrated, sounds like Fireball)
Funny that if I was going to a blind test on this part, I would say that JVM is Fireball because is the most equilibrated. You can cleary hear the separated notes and the chord. The best for me is therefore the JVM.
    Low notes rff:
    19:11 Fireball (consistent)
    19:26 Kraken (strange background noises)
19:39 Blu (also with strange background noises)
19:55 EVH (almost with background noises, but good)
20:07 Mark V (consistent like fireball, but less "agressive")
20:21 JVM (consistent like fireball and mark v, with the a little bit of that marshall characteristic cranked marshall tone. Mid-term in aggressiveness between Fireball and Mark)
Here Fireball, Mark V and JVM won bucz the lack of background noise. The best is up to you, Fireball more agressive, Mark more equilibrated, JVM more characteristic if you like Marshall tone)
    The MONSTRUOS ninth-string chord: GHOOUL
20:29 Fireball (sounded a little shaky)
20:34 Kraken (sounded more conssitent than Fireball. The most equilibrated)
20:39 Blu (woahh a desperate or/and enraged demon screaming. Amazng!)
20:44 EVH (sounded old, too much "grrrrr" sound)
    20:50 Mark V (sounded "restrained")
20:56 JVM (sounded "restrained" and a bit vintage)
Best: Kraken for the equilibrium and Blu for the agressivines and for "frightfulness"

I think for this shootout the Engl wins. JVM second. EVH third. That said, looking at the settings on the JVM for example, I would have boosted the Res and Pres and dialed in a bit more gain but overall it's a Marshall which always has that heavy mid thing. Surprise was the Blu although fairly bright. The Kraken is last place for me in this particular exercise.

Evh and jvm sounded almost exactly the same to me, evh ever slightly more so compressed with a little more top end. I think it comes down to features which are pretty similar. The el34 has a much better true clean channel too. Truly a toss up

Impressive. Never seen a 9 string guitar before, and it is so beautiful.
Anyway I love bas (I study them), my dream guitar is a PRS SE Paul Allender, I would love to have this 9 with bats inlays, although I admite the visual without inlays are way better, minimalist, perfect. Although too I would not have money to afford the buy of strings sets xD

The Engl with an active pickup is where its at. I was surprised with the Mark V. I think on a 7 string with passive pickups and a boost pedal it may win. But here it didnt perform well. Interesting video as always. Would love there to be a revv generator and Diamond in the bunch as well. But very good!

    @xiwiwix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The ENGL and the JVM killed it! for me! Both sounded perfect. Both had clarity but still sounded dark and thicc! Both wins IMO
The Mesa and the Victory weren't doing it for me. Hearing the Kraken reminded me why I got rid of the 50watter in the first place. Flat, lifeless with nice grunt. LOL I own a Mesa mini Recto, and it's one of my favorite amps ever, and the Mark was on my radar for my next amp... was on my radar.
While the Blu sounded solidstate-y I preferred it the most (when by itself) and seems like it would feel good to jam out with bedroom style. But I wouldn't use it for live or recording, more like a cool toy. But would more than likely use it more than other setups I have because of ease of use and its good tone! This is now my next amp to get. I loved it's solid state top end, sounded perfect! I love tube and SS tone, idk why other trash talk SS type tone so much.
The EVH and Mesa had this high end thing going on that I don't like, and why after owning six different 50watters, I'll never own an EVH again. HOT TAKE, I hated the Stealth the most of all 3 different types of EVH's. I'm yet to try a 100watter. IDK what it is, but once I get good clear tone out of the EVH, it has that high end annoying sound that never goes away, just like in/on Krank amps. More than likely it's user error on why I've come to almost hate the EVH 50watters. But what ever. I've moved away from dark congested tone.

Awesome video!! Such a hard thing to choose. They all sound so great!!
I guess if I had to pick one it'd either be the EVH or the Victory. 🔥
You should check out a Revv Generator or a Revv G20 one day. I recently got the Revv G20 after owning Peaveys mainly and man.... Probably the best amp I've ever owned. Such a clean distortion if that makes any sense at all.. hahaha
From the tones I hear on your videos it seems like you and I favor similar tones in a lot of ways. I play mainly 7 string guitars more than I do 6 strings and those Revv amps pair wonderful with 7 strings.. I think you'd dig it. 🤷‍♂️
Again, awesome videos. I really like your amp review videos. Cheers! 🤟😁

  • @smeemusic
    @smeemusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hwy John, you have tons of experience with amps and tones. I have a question that I am just stuck with. It comes with a bit of backstory.
I have an EVH 100 watt el34. This is a beast of an amp and I'm in love with the tone... sort of. Some days the amp sounds amazing. I'm getting everything I want. Great highs perfect mids perfect lows. Great saturation. And then some days it seems just dark and lacking. Uninspiring tone. Muffled. I just don't understand.
Is there something that tube amps do that would cause tone to change from day to day without changing any settings? Or do I need to get my ears checked? Both? Lol. I have just put new preamp tubes in it and the power tubes have many miles left on them. This amp hasn't been pushed very hard. I've cranked it real good one time ever. And I'm using an early 2000's engl 4x12 loaded with the original v30's. So I can't imagine its the cab.
Thank you for your amazing content! Also I found the blue guitar and the fireball the best for the 9 string. Wouldn't have expected that pedal amp to sound so good. But ir's are really important. I think I liked the top end of those the most. I still did like the evh tho. I didn't care for the Mesa that much. And the Marshall kinda just had a strange voicing for this tuning for my ears but I could also hear that all of them could have a place even with the low tuning. You never know what the next project might call for. Maybe you would need the Mesa for such a low tuning for a specific reason.

with the iridium have you experienced any unwanted noise? i bought one 2 years ago but i've sent it back as it was noisy on higher master settings even on the clean channel with guitar volume down. i liked the sounds that i got out of it but couldn't use my delay in the loop as the delay picked up the noise and the repeats were too much. i've read another review on thomann about this issue but haven't seen it discussed anywhere else. i get that it's a compact package with high wattage but this seemed like a big problem. it sounded really good in your videos and you would have probably pointed it out if it caused any issues with recording.

    • @SonicDriveStudio

ENGL won this by a long margin IMO. The others didn’t come close. That ENGL is NASTY. This isn’t the first time I’ve been more than impressed with that amp. Do you have a 9 string video on your Dual Rectifier yet?! …Boosted of course.
