Inside AFRICA's Largest SLAVE Market in Senegal (House of Slaves)

  • Welcome back to Ivaintures!
    This is part 2 of my adventure in Goree Island. It was quite a sobering experience. I tried to bring to light the stories and the memories of those who perished in this beautiful but haunted island of Goree.
    Gorée Island is hauntingly beautiful. ‘Setting sail’ from downtown Dakar, it only takes a 30-minute ferry ride to escape the bustling city and to reach the calm safe haven that is Gorée. Nestled between scenic lanes (without cars in sight), colorful buildings and mesmerizing cliff ocean views, lies the Maison des Esclaves.
    Gorée is a tiny, car-free island off the coast of Dakar, in Senegal. It’s known for its role in the 15th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. On the narrow streets, colonial buildings include the House of Slaves, now a museum. The 19th-century Fort d’Estrées houses the IFAN Historical Museum, with exhibits on Senegal’s past. The Henriette Bathily Women’s Museum considers the role of women in West African society.

    Seasons Greetings. Well done Ivan, very emotional it resurfaced the memories I felt when I went to Elmina and CapeCoast Dungeons in Ghana and took a fishing boat trip on the rough Atlantic waters from the “Door of No Return “ at Cape Coast dungeon to what is now referred to as “The Door Of Return“ at Elmina in a simulation trip to get a feel what it would briefly feel like to be on the water of the Atlantic Ocean. My self and my then 88 year old mother had a true Spiritual experience at Elmina, something that my other siblings that were on the trip did not experience (feel) years later only to find out through African Ancestry DNA through my Uncle that my maternal Grandfather’s line is Akan from Ghana. We had indeed done a full circle ⭕️ right back to our origination. Thank You.🙏🏾

    There is a book that was written by a Dutch historian Marjoleine Kars. The name of the book is ''Blood on the River'' and it details the horrors of the Berbice Slave Rebellion of 1763-1764 in current day Guyana. Guyana was first a Dutch and then a British colony. ''Blood on the River'' can be downloaded on line and it should be read by all those who have a deep interest in world history. This is not just history of Africa, Europe, Guyana, the Caribbean and the Netherlands. It's the history of the world.

    Ivaintures! I love this vlog 1&2. But puck that shit that my brothers didn't have a choice. They had a choice. Ask yourself this question! Why did our brothers and sisters jump into the sea 🌊 rather than go into slavery. Come-on! We got to take some responsibility, bro. You and I know that most Africans whenever they come to the diaspora, they refused to mix with us. This is a time for us to teach eachother. We can start that by marriage with eachother. That is our way forward. As a child growing up in the Caribbean, we always know of our roots and where we came from. Try listen to Bob Marley songs to be enlightened. Start with the song WAR. You may learn a thing or 2. As a matter of fact WAR will be a good song for this vlog
    1 love ❤️ my bro.

I cannot help but visualise the life of the enslaved people, the violence inflicted on them , their anxiety …. The memory of their life brings unbearable pain….

    Beautiful reporting about l'île de Gorée. Merci beaucoup ! But all the Signara in Sénégal weren't daughter's of young virgin slave women and not children of white slave traders men. There were in Saint-Louis some white men who were working there as administrative officials or product traders or military officers who were married to young black free women : indeed they chose the young women and demanded to their families the right to marry them. Because there weren't enough white women and they were already married. The young white boys who were born there and grew up among other local children , also married young black women when they grew up.

      @IvainTures  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Slaves were purchased using a variety of currencies and goods, depending on the time period, location, and trade network. Some of the most common forms of currency included:
      1. Cowrie Shells: Widely used in West Africa as a medium of exchange, cowrie shells were a significant currency in the transatlantic slave trade.
      2. Gold: In parts of Africa, especially along the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana), gold was used in trade, including the purchase of slaves.
      3. European Coins: Various European currencies, such as Spanish dollars, British pounds, and Portuguese reais, were used to buy slaves in exchange for goods or services.
      4. Barter Goods: Instead of money, traders often exchanged goods like firearms, textiles, tobacco, alcohol, and beads for slaves.
      5. Commodities: Sugar, rum, and other products from the Americas were also used in triangular trade transactions involving slaves.
      Each region had its own preferences based on its local economy and the influence of European traders.
