"Corporations aren't happy with streaming" is a sub-sub-sub-basement level dumbo take
There are winners and losers. The rise of streaming certainly put a lot of companies out of business and forced the big industry record companies to pivot. There's just a smaller amount of the money going into the music industry than there used to be, or at least the part where songs are recorded and distributed. So fewer people get a chance to butter their bread off that. Record deals aren't worth as much when their revenue comes from ads and spotify memberships. There's just less money in spotify memberships and ad sales than there was in physical album sales; and there are also more artists than ever trying to get a piece of that smaller pie.
Conversely, live concerts and merchandise are worth more today than ever, but Livenation and Ticketmaster are the real winners there.

The Taylor Swift take was awful. Especially awful. Two years go Taylor had the biggest pop album of the year. Winning album of a year. Creating a tour she’s still on and will gross over a billion dollars
Speaking as a Nirvana fan, they would not be nearly as good now or have anywhere near the same legacy if Kurt was still alive. Never underestimate the 'every picture of the guy is youthful' effect. I can't shake the feeling that Kurt would have problematic vaccine takes during Covid. He just seems like he would have aged into being that kinda guy.

Billie, Dua, Arianna, Chappel, Charli, and many others also had multiple different variants and different versions of their albums (a lot of them for a limited time and/or offering bonus tracks, just like Taylor). The only reason none of them were called out for it was because theirs just wasn't selling as much as Taylor and she was just staying at the no.1 position on the charts.

The thing for me with Sexxy Redd is, sure its kinda low-brow, but so are many other male rappers and noone's giving them shit about it.
Tbh I didn’t really have an issue with sexxy redd’s style of hypersexual rap even though it wasn’t my cup of tea, but I have an issue with her reacting to videos of little kids singing her songs and approving of it. When You Know You're Right was done, that song was completely done by Kurt cuz pretty much everyone in the band stopped playing together. What we have is all of Nirvana whether he lived or not. People are too harsh on Chappell Roan. She only has 1 album and 1 EP under her belt. The artistic growth from the EP to the Album is insane, so I’m sure that she’s only going to get better; often her music does borrow from other artists but the more music she makes I’m sure she’ll develop a more distinct sound and often times the music she’s making is better than it’s influences. A song like kink is karma sounds like a Taylor swift song, but Taylor swift could never write a bridge like that and would never think to write those chronically gen z lyrics, that are actually quite endearing.
That’s because Taylor isn’t Gen Z. Why would she write a Gen Z bridge. But to say Taylor can’t write an awesome bridge is crazy. Bridges and outros/context changing is her specialty

Probably depends on his personal life. I don’t think he would’ve gone the way of Sly where Jimi would’ve completely crashed and burned. But maybe like Clapton, he might’ve had a low point in the mid/late seventies, a period of experimenting with synths and pop in the eighties, and some serious GOAT songs in the nineties and people reassessing and appreciating him during the grunge and alt revolution.
2:26 I don’t think this perspective has much ground. Say what you want about midnights, but that album really captured the zeitgeist in 2022, just a couple years ago. Taylor is likely still capable of being a unique and widely popular voice in the pop scene, and TTPD was *probably* just a fluke.

I would go farther than technically and say they're completely valid. All opinions on anything subjective are valid even if they're incredibly bizarre or insane. Like how Fantano treated Doug Walker's apparent dislike of The Wall as valid even though he expressed confusion and disbelief. I just wish more people understood that, but a lot of people get very angry when a creator they follow has a different opinion.

Musicians striking isn't gonna do shit to stop streaming. We've seen scabs in every industry and the music industry definitely won't be short of any "implants" willing to betray their fellow artists in order take that spot and money for themselves.
The change HAS to come from the consumers. Either people flock to a new format that can be created in the future which better pays artists and record companies or we have to just go back to buying all of our music.
Yeah I think there's just too much music out there for a strike to be effective, unless like the top 100 artists all took their music off streaming and made it a bit movement but no way most of them give a shit.

Taylor was always feeding her "parasocial cult" since 2006. She made music about her personal life in 2006 and she did the same in 2024.
We got Shake It Off in 2014 because that's when she officially went pop, and needed to have the pop hits you can dance to. Now she's well established in the pop world and she no longer needs to make those kind of songs.
Honestly, I kinda respect that she's doing her own thing and killing it without leaning on trends all the time.
Well she did brand her new album as sad poetic alt-pop, with the exact same songwriting and slightly different synthesizers because "sad alt-pop" artists like Lana, Billie and Mitski have been huge in the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised if her next new album (after the remakes) is a brat(taylor's version) or a chappell roan rip off. She has never been creative when it comes to concepts and images.

Dear Mr melon, I love your reviews and think your feedback (even though I sometimes don’t agree with) is greatly appreciated. Sometimes when there’s a record that just came out, I’m too lazy to listen to it. So I wait for you to make a video and say some wise melon words. Also some of your takes can give me insight on records that I’ve listened to that make me grow more fond of it, or dislike it a little more. For example, a while back I listened to the album “King Of the Mischievous South vol. 2” by Denzel curry and I thought it was an odd approach for him to go from an introspective and lyrical approach. To a more mixtapey and crunchy theme. You gave me more insight on it by saying how it was a tribute to southern rap style mixtapes, which further improved my enjoyment. Your videos are great. Keep on listening to albums melon boy.

I definitely do think a reason for Nirvana's legendary status was how short their time in the limelight was. They simply had no chance to fall off. I think a good simile for this would be Dave Ghrol and The Foo Fighters, legend in his own right, now has tweens on social media telling him to "shut up, old man". And they didn't even fall off sonically.
I think we just like putting your reviews on while we snack or eat cuz we like music... and not many people really talk about music or rate records online.. its rare. we dont always agree, most of the time its background noise.

Why is sexyy red considered bad? I have yet to hear a coherent argument about what exactly is bad about her music. I only hear extremely subjective shit like "it's bad/mid" which is essentially "I personally don't like it."
Annoying voice, agonizingly bad singing, she's not as funny as she thinks she is, her cadences are pretty boring to the point her music is kinda monotonous. It can be covered up as a gimmick she's running with, but it doesn't make her music sound more satisfying. I'd say comparing her to someone like NBA Youngboy wouldn't be far off the mark

regarding the assertion that your reviews are bad: i do think that you tend to miss the mark in your analysis of lyrics of female artists, specifically. your reviews fiona apple's "fetch the bolt cutters", fka twigs' "magdalene", even olivia rodrigo's "guts" all have examples of this. i don't know how much time you allow yourself to sit with a work before reviewing or what your process is, but it might be worth exploring this blindspot as there's something about songwriting/lyricism from a female perspective which you seem to consistently not pick up on.
i say this who's generally neutral on your critical work (sometimes agree, sometimes i think you miss the mark). just something i noticed and wanted to share.
You're still wrong about Sexy Red. A lot of people are angry at her for the reason you mentioned but a lot of black women are angry because they view her persona as "minstrelsy" especially in the context of the Drake cosign. Supposedly she is playing out a negative racist stereotype idk I'm not American I'm just saying you are too sure of yourself without looking into nuances of the backlash. Isn't the biggest issue with earing from streaming services is that the Labels end up taking all the money.
I read somewhere, that the artist only end up getting 15-25% of their streaming revenue and from that they also have to pay their collaborators lile producers and writers.

The Nirvana one was kinda stupid, if they knew anything about kurt before posting theyd know that kurt and dave were going in different sonic directions, if kurt never died Nirvana would probably make one more album that stuggles not having a cohesive vision, then they break up amicably, dave forms foo fighters and kurt probably does more solo work or forms a new group, one way or another i don't think Nirvana as it was was meant to make it all the way through the 90s, and you know what? Theyre still one of the best bands of all time

Yeah, music snobs suck, but I really don't get how Sexyy Red is clever, creative, fun, interesting, or funny. The occasional decent bar and mildly catchy flow isn't really enough to justify making music that sounds like every rockist's interperetation of modern hip-hop.
I don’t really care what you rate the albums, sometimes I agree, sometimes I don’t. I learn about music I would not have heard otherwise from your channels, you know a lot and cover a lot of genres, so I stick around whether I agree or not. 🙂↔️💕✨

i think even if Kurt was alive today, Nirvana wouldve been broken up since the early 2000s. like i dont think theyd still be around as a band nowadays, that just doesnt track with who they were. both in terms of aversion to commercialization and in terms of like... volatility. if Kurt was alive, he'd still be a very troubled man. idk if he'd even be in the public spotlight in the same way he was

lol, I definitely looked down on Sexyy and felt she was embarassing to black women, until I listened to her. then I watched her videos. Still not sure what happened, but I'm a fan now. She's having such a good time. How can I be mad.
Nirvana brought rock back to the forefront but as soon as he died all the plastic boy bands and girl bands took the forefront while rock once again retreated to a “large cult following” of a music genre. Pop and hip hop were here to stay and take over the next three decades which they have (unfortunately). So the idea of rock falling off and nirvana would’ve suffered from that isn’t all true because nirvana disbanding kindve caused that fall off. The truth is if Kurt Cobain had been in a better mental place and lived, Nirvana would’ve been huger than they are now PLUS very well acclaimed. Just look at the progression of 5 years between Bleach to In Utero. I personally like Bleach better than In Utero but just due to style. In Utero is one of the most artistic albums ever and it pales in comparison to what he had in store. First of all Dave Grohl would’ve started writing full fledged songs like Alone and Easy Target or Big Me or Everlong. Those amazing Foo songs would’ve been frickin deep cuts on the next Nirvana album. Listen to You Know You’re Right and listen to Do Re Mi. People have quoted both to be two of his greatest songs and they’re just the first ones that got finished. He had plans to switch up and finally make the full transition away from grunge that he had sort of worked on for Incesticide Nevermind and In Utero. Nirvana was going to be the next Beatles where they started out a big commercial act that people liked and then eventually expanding into the most beautifully artistic albums we ever heard. But we’ll never get any of that because we focus too little on the well being of those around us. Rip Kurt Cobain
