The song is about a child that was conceived artificially, hence the absence of belly, name and a nipple to feed him. In the video Till plays as a double, the brother, who was conceived naturally, and who is visiting his brother.

This song connects directly to the video of adieu. When the band approaches the vault door the word mutter is written on it. Inside they find their clones.

Probably one of the best power ballads EVER by Rammstein. 😍😍😍😍
    Let's analyze the complex text:
    Die Tränen greiser Kinderschar
Ich zieh sie auf ein weißes Haar
Werf in die Luft die nasse Kette
    -------------------------------------------------------
    The tears of aged children
I pull them onto a white hair
Throw the wet chain into the air
    -------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist speaks of a group of old children. They are old because these children are probably not destined for a long life. As soon as their task is fulfilled, these children are killed. It is also possible that their genetic code has been manipulated so that they age faster. It is conceivable that they have to grow to a certain size so that the organs are developed enough to be used in the cell donors.
The lyrical ego is not an isolated case here; a whole host of children have already fallen victim to such procedures. The tears stand for the bleak, meaningless lives of these children, who all have to die far too early. The protagonist metaphorically pulls them onto a chain, perhaps by commemorating them. This chain is tightened by a white hair. Probably a reference to the fact that the lyrical self is already old or will soon die. However, the white hair could also stand for the final phase of his life. Perhaps our protagonist knows that he doesn't have long to live. He now throws this wet chain of tears and hair into the air, which may represent heaven or freedom through death.
"Und wünsch mir, dass ich eine Mutter hätte"
    ___________________________________________
"And wish I had a mother"
In the face of death, the child wishes for the security of its mother. In these first lines of the song, Till's voice is very tender, but this changes more and more as the song progresses. A first contradiction becomes very clear here. On the one hand, there is talk of a group of old children. Children who are biologically close to death, who are overwhelmed and left alone with this fate. They are not allowed to be children and are confronted with thoughts and decisions that do not correspond to their level of development. Cognitively, however, they are still at the infant stage, as can be seen from their desire for their mother.
    "Keine Sonne die mir scheint
    Keine Brust hat Milch geweint"
    ________________________________
"No sun that shines for me
    No breast has cried milk"
    ________________________________
This sentence can now be interpreted ambiguously. On the one hand, perhaps there really is no sun where the lyrical I lives. Perhaps he has always lived in a kind of laboratory environment. But perhaps the lack of sun also metaphorically stands for a life without joy, fun, security and happiness. The lyrical ego was not breastfed by its biological mother, as is usually the case. It was born differently and without parents.
"In meiner Kehle steckt ein Schlauch,
Hab keinen Nabel auf dem Bauch"
    _________________________________________
"There's a tube in my throat,
Don't have a navel on my belly"
    _________________________________________
he missing navel gives a clear indication that the child was not carried naturally by the mother. Instead, it was created in the laboratory. It therefore has no navel or umbilical cord. However, it also receives important nutrients via a kind of tube device that is inserted into its neck.
    "Mutter, Mutter"
    ___________________
    "Mother, Mother"
    -----------------------------
This word is not emphasized lovingly and tenderly, but darkly and threateningly. In the context of the song, the mother therefore stands for nothing good. The last thoughts of the lyrical ego therefore only revolve around the mother, which is hardly surprising considering that he is probably still a child. After all, the mother is the most important caregiver for small children. This child was deprived of its parents because it was artificially created. Much worse... the person who comes closest to the mother, i.e. the cell donor, is the reason why the lyrical ego will soon die. It is therefore hardly surprising that the text becomes increasingly aggressive...
    "Ich durfte keine Nippel lecken
    Und keine Falte zum Verstecken"
    ________________________________
"I wasn't allowed to lick nipples
    And no pucker to hide"
Here the reference to suckling is emphasized again, which this child was not allowed to experience. At the same time, the fold probably stands for the female sexual organ from which the child was not born naturally.
    "Niemand gab mir einen Namen"
    __________________________________
    "Nobody gave me a name"
In the eyes of other people, artificially conceived children are more of a kind of spare parts store for human tissue than a real person. This is why they are not given a name. We know something similar about animals. Pets are given a name, but livestock are not. A name gives living beings an identity and emphasizes their uniqueness. If things do not have a name, this makes them dispensable, interchangeable and unapproachable. These children are therefore seen as objects rather than individuals.
"Gezeugt in Hast und ohne Samen"
    ______________________________________
"Conceived in haste and without seed"
Ideally, a human being is conceived through an act of love, a moment full of emotion and happiness in which both parents unite. This does not happen with cloning. The exact opposite is the case here: all that is needed is a cell donor. A living being is created in a sterile laboratory environment. This happens in haste, i.e. casually and routinely. I think the fact that Till pronounces the word Hast at this point in a similar way to Hass is probably intentional. From this point on, Till's voice becomes louder and more threatening. It's great how the song goes from soft and soulful tones at the beginning to such negative emotions. Thematically, the motif of the lyrical ego also changes at this point. Having previously regretted his existence as a clone, he now develops enormous hatred for his own mother...

This song was released after Dolly the sheep was cloned. There was a big ethical discussion in Germany and the song has many references such as "doter children" (Dolly had no childhood because it was cloned from an adult sheep) or the "wet chain", which refers to the DNA helix. The translation is not always accurate. The "mother" he wants to drown in the river is thus in a way more the biologist.

In reality, clones of mammals (including humans) are born as babies and grow up just as regular creatures...only in Hollywood clones are instantly "ready to go" adults.

Musically, Mutter - like many other Rammstein ballads - is a monotonous song. It is written in the key of E. It has a very strong melody, contains majestic power chords, and except for the modulation in the middle, it progresses monotonously and ends.
When criticizing the songs written by Rammstein in this relatively simple musical form (mostly ballads as I mentioned above), the lyrics become important.
When you look at the lyrics and think about them a few times, several different interpretations can be made for this song, as is the case with almost all Rammstein songs.
At first glance, the lyrics seem to be written from the mouth of a child who was never born and never existed (which brings to mind abortion) facing its mother. When viewed this way, it seems that many emotions are intertwined; mother's love, some anger, some hatred and a lot of sadness...
But with a secondary reading, it becomes more evident that the song reflects the feelings of a child who was "born without a mother from the very beginning" (NOT of a child who did not have a mother because he was killed by abortion.)
He is a laboratory-produced (probably cloned) child who does not have an organic mother (and an organic father of course), has something to say for his mother first. From this perspective, the song seems to be about human cloning at a higher level. And it seems to be a reference to the science-fiction novel "Brave New World" written by Aldous Huxley; inevitably bringing to mind the system of creating motherless and fatherless humans. It's like the words of a child born this way and his anger towards his nonexistent mother.. (By the way, this song is quite old, I think it's from 2001, and I read in an article at that time that the idea for the song came from the (actually non-existent) mother-son relationship that the band's guitarist Richard Kruspe, had with his mother during his childhood. The artistic creativity achieved through a fairly common core situation is impressive, isn't it? It's impossible not to tip our hat to Till. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest literary figures of our time.)

Just think of Dolly the sheep who had 3 mothers...
Dolly was born on 5 July 1996 and had three mothers: one provided the egg, another the DNA, and a third carried the cloned embryo to term.
This song was made in that aera... The Dolly story may have been influential to this song.

The inspiration for the song was the poor childhood relationship Rammstein guitarist Richard Kruspe had with his own mother, and some of the issues Till had with his own as well.

Greetings and Love from Germany again 💚. Good german, buddy
    ..getting better, wa...great.
I was waiting for you to say " ..hey, whats wrong, only Till in this video. They do everything together, everyone is equal, right. Oh, i remember, they explained it in a documentary i saw."
But somehow you didn't noticed it. But that's Ok, dude. Here a little reminder: Quote:
"After 3 months of touring in America, no one in the band wanted to make a video, even though the filming was planned 3 or 4 days after their return and everything was ready for it, everyone except Olli and Till went on vacation, so only Till has the video made alone, even if he was against the idea of being the sole actor. "Why me? There’s nothing special about me,” Till said."
But the director let him no choice. For me the video and the studio version is a little low for Rammstein's level. But the live version blows my mind every time...have a peaceful weekend, my friend. Stay safe & UP THE IRONS ✌

This video caused big trouble inside Rammstein, because Till and only he was to see in this video. That was against the band rules, and nearly split the band.
